To get the most functionality from your Google Home, you should install the
following apps to your iPhone. Google Home, Google Assistant, Google Maps,
Google Calendar, and Google Play Music. Make sure you are signed in to these
apps before setting up your Google Home. You will use the Google Home app to
set up your device. Also, if you want to play music from Spotify, Pandora,
and Apple Music, you will need to have these apps and have accounts set up,
as you will have to link these acounts with your Google Home.

Subject: Questions regarding Google Home

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, can the Google Home Mini work with my iPhone SE?

If so, how does this work?

Could I get Google to make calls and look up stuff for me, instead of
having to use Siri?

Also, what else could be done with it?

Could I get it to play Apple music?

Any thoughts or advice would be grately appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Making Siri work better for me

2018-01-17 Thread Richard Turner
I've not had too much trouble with Siri for calling people in my contacts. I
use the first and last name fields. For businesses, I just put the business
name in the last name field since using the company field gets very mixed
results.
For directions, I either say "give me directions to Fred Meyer on Hawthorne" or
I will say give me directions to a specific address, like "give me directions
to 537 southeast 15th street, Portland, Oregon."

Asking more general questions gets much more mixed results.

As for SIRI finding certain businesses by category, profession etc. that is
just as it is, I assume SIRI does not use Google for this information and since
Google is definitely the best source for that results that come from other
sources may just not be as good or it may just not find them.
I did, for example, just ask SIRI to look for hardware stores. It gave me 2 or
3 options including a rental place, but it missed Canadian Tire which has a big
tool and hardware section (it came up under department stores) and it also
missed two building supply stores which both sell lots of tools and hardware.
When I asked for building supply stores it gave me the smithers Lumber Yard
first which is definitely a good thing, but Castle Home Centre which is in a
small town about 10 Km away was not listed at all, instead a business which
does roof and other insulation was listed and also a cleaning business and a
couple of construction businesses came up.
Obviously somewhere online the cleaning business must be listed under building
supplies, but it's definitely a bit strange what sometimes is included.
When I Googled "Look for building supply stores nearby" on my computer (exact
phrase I used to ask SIRI), the first 3 results are Smithers Lumber Yard,
Smithers Home Hardware and Bulkley Valley Home Centre which is the franchise of
that Castle building supply store I mentioned earlier and those 3 are
definitely what a local would say are the top choices.
SIRI has its limitations, but it rarely has problems dialing my contacts, doing
all the various phone functions and many other things. With your contacts you
might want to look at how you have them entered. Do you set them up correctly
with first name under first name, last name under last name and all that? Do
you correctly format the phone number, the best option I sto use the
international dialing format, for example, +1 (202) 555-. You can just use
the 10-digit phone number with area code, but if you are calling a long
distance number or if you are away and call a number at home which then is long
distance, at best it will first tell you that this is a long distance call
before the call goes through. Here in Canada the call will go through after you
get that message, not sure if that works the same way in the US. If I put the
+1 then it's never an issue.

Hi,
Speaking strictly for myself yes I can verify the not reading content back
in native apps and this is running the latest operating system on an AT
iPhone 8Plus just to be as detailed as possible. I've just gotten used to
working around it so haven't fussed too much over it myself.
This goes for the dictating itself bug as well.

Hello Robin,

I, too, have a new iPhone 8 Plus running the latest version of the OS.
However, I am not experiencing the problems discussed in this thread.

I do know, however, that some third-party apps do not play well with
VoiceOver via dictation. For example, when I dictate a title into the
OverDrive public library app, sometimes the dictated text is read back to me
and other times, it is not. Likewise, getting the edit option to appear in
the VoiceOver Rotor can be a bit of a challenge in some third-party apps,
such as OverDrive.

This is why I always use a native iOS app as my baseline when determining if
something is a system bug or an app-specific bug.

There is a well-known/documented/Apple acknowledged iPhone 8 series system
bug that is probably responsible for the sometimes experienced overlap/delay
dictation feedback anomaly where VoiceOver appears to dictate itself.

Finally, please keep the following in mind. Despite public opinion to the
contrary, iOS versions can and do vary across carriers. I assure you that
the iOS version that is running on Verizon Wireless devices is not the exact
same version that is running on a T & T Wireless devices. Furthermore, yet
a slightly different version of the OS is installed on SIM-free devices.

Most of the time, these differences are all but impossible to notice but,
sometimes, as was the case about 3 years ago with regard to a video display
driver, these differences/bugs do show themselves.

Just some things to keep in mind as you troubleshoot and assess.

Mark

Hi,
I've observed this on an iPhone 8Plus running the latest version of the
operating system. I find that if I insert a space after it makes the I'm out
of dictation ding it'll then read it to me. I can then either leave the
space or delete it as I wish. I don't like this problem but hate even more
when you enter dictation and VoiceOver feels the necessity to recite
sometimes a lengthy hint or the like and it ends up trying to dictate
itself, oy (smile).

RE: Door locks with fingerprint technology with Bluetooth and accessible app?

2018-01-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Most of these locks are available at Home Depot, Best Buy also has some, but at
least Best Buy Canada does not seem to sell the Schlage Sense.
Definitely if you want just a basic electronic lock with keypad Home Depot or
another large building supply store is a good place to start.
Amazon of course sells most of them as well.

Thanks a million folks for this valuable information.
I do not have a security company, and I have no intention to hire one. It is
simply not needed in my area.
I asked my question because I have a tendency to lock myself out often. That
is why I thought of fingerprint or digital lock.
Now, I wonder how hard is it to install these locks. Do I need to hire a
specialist to assemble and install these kinds of locks, or I would be able to
do it myself? When it comes to the regular mechanical locks with keys, I
always change them myself without hiring a Locksmith. I am not sure how hard it
would be to install a digital lock by myself!
Cheers,
Cris

Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features, specs and
most likely a user manual in PDF.
I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows you
have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my
Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone with Touch Id
or my passcode.

Not any more, quite a few electronic lock companies made fingerprint doorlocks
years ago, I had one and so did a friend of mine, and they were the biggest
pain in the neck.
Depending on how much you want to spend, you are much better off with an
electronic lock with a keypad or a smartlock which you can unlock with your
phone.
I have a Weiser electronic lock at my retail store which was actually installed
by my alarm company and which has a keypad, but it also connects via the
Zigbbee protocol to my alarm panel so I can unlock it via the alarm app
remotely.
At home we just recently purchased a Schlage Sense smartlock which has home kit
support. This means you can unlock it by telling SIRI “Unlock my front door” or
from the home app. It has also a keypad, but it’s a touchscreen so you’d have
to put at least a dot on the 5 or maybe put a tactile dot on the 1, 3, 5, 7 and
9 to be able to use it

Hi,
Speaking strictly for myself yes I can verify the not reading content back
in native apps and this is running the latest operating system on an AT
iPhone 8Plus just to be as detailed as possible.

Hi,
I've observed this on an iPhone 8Plus running the latest version of the
operating system. I find that if I insert a space after it makes the I'm out
of dictation ding it'll then read it to me. I can then either leave the
space or delete it as I wish. I don't like this problem but hate even more
when you enter dictation and VoiceOver feels the necessity to recite

as far as I can tell, Siri was worse in Ios eleven with hey siri on. She does a

Hello everyone,

As you all likely remember, I wrote last week and said that Siri was dumb.
well, I still feel the same way, for the most part.

I know how to speak to Siri. I know to wait for the tone. I understand
how I need to speak to it.

But 1 reason I get so upset with it is, because I can ask it to call a
certain contact, and it can't do it. I say the contact just like it is,
within my contacts.

but other strange issues are when I tell it to look up polmonology
specialests in Saint Louis, and it tells me it can't find any.

Google never did this stuff to me, ever! But for more than 1 reason, I
like the iPhone better.

I did put the Google assistant on my phone. But I don't like that I just
can't say, Ok Google, and it won't come up.

So are there things I can do, to possibly make Siri work better for me?

My location is set, and the Apps I want it to work with, are set. So I
am honestly not quite sure what else to do.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Questions regarding Google Home

2018-01-17 Thread Andy Baracco
To get the most functionality from your Google Home, you should install the
following apps to your iPhone. Google Home, Google Assistant, Google Maps,
Google Calendar, and Google Play Music. Make sure you are signed in to these
apps before setting up your Google Home. You will use the Google Home app to
set up your device. Also, if you want to play music from Spotify, Pandora,
and Apple Music, you will need to have these apps and have accounts set up,
as you will have to link these acounts with your Google Home.

Thank you,

Does this problem occur when you are dictating text in the native iOS Message,

Also, do you reboot your device at least once a day?

it makes the ding and i'll say what i have to, then double tap again. My phone
isn't repeating it back as it should. It seems to come and go. Any ideas?

RE: Making Siri work better for me

2018-01-17 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Terri,

You know, since your first post on this matter, I have given a lot of thought
to your problem.

Can you tell us by what means you are accessing Siri? This is to say, are you
speaking directly into the phone? Or are you using a headset. Is the phone in
a case? Or not.

If you are using a thirdparty headset or the included Apple EarPods, it's quite
possible that you have a faulty microphone. This has happened to me at least
twice in the past 4 years. In both instances, I went to my local Apple Store
and they swapped out the included Apple headset. It's also possible that a
case could be blocking part or all of the microphone.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to take the phone to your local Apple Store and
have them attempt to use Siri.

If this is not an option, then consider allowing someone else to use Siri on
your phone to see how significant the difference in speech pattern may prove.

Though not commonly known, certain apps can sometimes impede Siri
functionality. So, be certain to clear all apps from the App Switcher when
testing Siri.

I cannot recall if you have performed a completely clean OS install on your
phone to see if doing so will make a difference.

Finally, it's possible, though rare, that your device may simply be a lemon.
The only way to determine this is to take it to an Apple Store and have it
examined.

Since 2008, I have personally known one person whose device turned out to be a
lemon. Apple simply swapped it out after they could not quite narrow down the
problem said problem having something to do with the internal microphone, if
memory serves.

Good Luck,

Mark

Subject: Making Siri work better for me

Thank you,

Terri

Re: a frustrating dictation problem

2018-01-17 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
I've observed this on an iPhone 8Plus running the latest version of the
operating system.

RE: Questions regarding Google Home

2018-01-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Google Home speakers including the Mini are similar to the Amazon Echo
speakers.
They are stand-alone devices and you can ask them for various information, set
timers and so on.
There are companion apps for both, but more used for Settings and so on. You
can give the Amazon Echo access to your contacts and ask it to make a call and
also ask it to call such and such number by speaking the number. For the Echo
this works for ccalls in North America. I assume you can make calls using the
Google speakers as well, but for the most part they have not too much to do
with your iPhone and won't change in any way how SIRI works.

Sieghard

RE: Making Siri work better for me

2018-01-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Have you set up Hey SIRI in SIRI Settings? If SIRI does not understand your
speech this may help just a bit since setting this up involves you saying a few
specific sentences to SIRI in order to train SIRI to respond to your voice.

Sieghardever somewhere

Subject: Making Siri work better for me

Thank you,

Terri

You can go to Hulu's web site or you can call HuLu customer service and cancel
that way.

Unsubscribing from Hulu?

2018-01-17 Thread dacia . luck
Hi, how would I go about unsubscribing from Hulu? Can I do it on my phone? If
so, where do I go? I’ve tried to look in settings, but don’t see anything that
looks relevant.
Thanks,
Dacia

Mac audio?

2018-01-17 Thread Harry Bell
For my new Mac mini, what combination of microphone and speaker works well? I
can’t use in-ear earphones. Can anyone recommend either a headset with
microphone or separate speaker and a microphone?
Thanks
Harry
