Just out of curiosity do you have problems correcting dictated messages?

character is found in how you treat people who cannot do anything for you!

Subject: Using Google's GBoard with the iPhone

Hi to the list.
I am so close to get this to working, but I cannot figure out a few steps.
You may have experienced less than stellar results with IOS dictation, even so
far as to experience dictating text, having it show up correctly when
reviewing, and then when you look at the results, you get back something quite
different than what you had originally dictated, and sometimes, dramatically
different.
I decided to download and install Google’s GBoard, and make it a third party
keyboard, but only with partial success.
Apparently, there is a button that you must activate called Hide Keyboard.
I have only been able to find this button only one time.
When you do this, you double tap and hold on the spacebar, and Google’s
dictation will begin.
Google’s dictation, at least for right now, is incredibly more accurate than
the dictation in IOS, at least, this is what I have found, especially in the
messages app.
I was able to get perfect dictation results, but now that darn Hide Keyboard
button has disappeared!
I fully understand and appreciate that some may be experiencing no problems
with dictation at all.
So, I am wondering if anyone has tried installing and using GBoard, available
for free in the app store,  and what your experiences may have been.
Thanks.

Re: Was wondering about the freestyle libre and accessibility with the iPhone

2018-11-04 Thread Brett

Hi,

there is a librelink app for the freestyle Libre you would need to check if
it's released in your country. If it is the librelink app can be used to
start and read the sensor. I'm currently using mine with Android and I'm
due to start a new sensor in about 5 days, so I can test the iPhone
accessibility if you can wait till then.

Cheers,
Brett.

Re: Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-04 Thread Arlene
Sieghard, as it turns out I don't think we got into the screen recording last
night as I was thinking, but we would like to test it and learn about it since
we weren't aware of it. Anyway we find screen recording in the control center,
but how do you begin the recording? After you let me know how to start the
recording, then we could send the recording to you. We know how to activate it,
remove it and move it around, but Wayne can't find the controls for it, so if
you could tell us how to find the controls and how to use it, to start the
recording and stop the recording, that would be very ehlpful, we really want to
learn this. If it's on the ipad too, we'll try it on there as well. We're
coming along with the phone, but we're still learning as it's just been from
earlier this year that we got these se phones, so your knowledge, and others on
here is so helpful. there's always something else to learn. Thank you.

Voice Memos is a completely different app, in a way, screen recording is

while I was recording. I will send the attachment in a separate message.

There are lots. Just Press Record is good, Audio memos Pro is very good and
you can turn off the filtering that Apple puts in place to get a better
recording. Some people swear Ferrite Recording Studio. I find that one a bit
confusing with VoiceOver.

I hope that helps,

Screen Recorder is in Control Centre, touch the time or other item in the
status bar at the top of the phone and swipe up with 3 fingers, it is one of
the items in the bottom 3 rows of apps in Control Centre.

You can customize what is displayed in Control Centre in Settings > Control

on a home screen, it is only available from Control Centre.

Not Sieghard, but with Screen Recording you get a video of what is happening
on the screen along with your narration. Rather than double tapping on Screen
Recording, touch it once to get it focused and flick down to open controls and
double tap.

Then, the microphone button is one flick right I believe, which you want to
turn on before going back to the start recording.

Also, you want your screen curtain off and brightness at a level a sighted
person can see.

Voice Memos only records your voice, and probably VoiceOver, but that doesn’t
help if you want someone to see what is happening on the screen.

  Richard

for the operating system are identical. Thanks for asking your question,
getting us interested in this because recording some things may be useful from

Hello,

I was trying to do a screen recording today to show somebody how to do
something with Voiceover. Unfortunately I realized that now in iOS 12 there is
no way I could think of to make such a screen recording which includes what
Voiceover is speaking. This used to be not easy in iOS 11, either, but it could
be accomplished by using a Bluetooth or wired external speaker. Now Voiceover
is switched to the Earpiece of the phone where even at full volume it can be
barely heard and even though with a Bluetooth speaker Voiceover was speaking
loud and clear via the Bluetooth speaker, nothing was picked up by the
microphone. My own voice could be heard as I was explaining my gestures, but
nothing else.

I would really appreciate it if others who have newer phones than me could
test this to see if they get the same result. I have a 6S Plus so if people

What frame? They are stil thin and work with any thin case you have on your
phone.
I would definitely recommend to ask at the Apple Store to have it installed
though, putting on a screen protector is a precise operation and while I am not
saying a blind person can't do it, it is one of these things a sighted person
can do better especially one at a store who has done it maybe dozens or
hundreds of times. I had mine put on I think 2 years ago or even longer and
it's still absolutely perfect.

If you get a good glass screen protector you'll never know the difference

Oh, Bill, I had that kind with my 4S, used it as a selling point for the phone,
but I don't ever want another one like that. I think you'll get it, just easy
does it, don't work too hard at it like most everything with the phone itself.

I never really learned to use the 4S, like I have the SE, but I did manage that
case. Then my husband had the phone for a while, and he didn't like the case,
said it was too bulky for such a little phone, and I agreed with him.

When I got my SE, Consumer Cellular had a silicone case kind of like we have
with the Victor Reader stream, only fitted for the phone. I put it right on and
am especially careful with the screen, since it did not have a screen
protector. I kind of like the feel of the real screen though.

Best regards,

Subject: Otter Box Defender case for 8 Plus

Good evening, list.

I finally bought my Otter Box Defender case for my 8 Plus today. I was shown
how to work with it in the store but don’t remember everything apparently. I
should note I had a lot of stress because I had an incident where I was using
my bank’s ATM as the branch was closed, and had to go to another branch across
town to get cash and get my check card replaced with a temporary because I
couldn’t get it back from the machine.

I went to my A. T. & T. store and bought the case and had a couple technical
issues checked, namely the visual voice mail issue I mentioned a few days ago,
which turned out to be fine; apparently it hadn’t fully updated along with the
iOS update, but it’s fine now.

The problem I am having is finding and manipulating the latch consistently and
intentionally that allows for both removal from the holster and placement back
into it. I was fine working with it in the store, but when I got home I had
trouble. I remembered how to manipulate the belt clip, but couldn’t find the
latch for the phone that is inside the case. Then when I took it all off my
belt, mysteriously it popped open. I got it put together but I’m not sure I
did it right.

I don’t want to on the one hand break it trying to find that latch, or have it
pop open unintentionally because it isn’t secure.

I tried to call the store but the number I had might be for one salesperson and
not the store itself.

2018-11-04 Thread Arlene
Sieghard, we followed your instructions, and I think we tested recording in
both screen recorder and voice memo and with both our voices and voice over can
be heard very clearly. I know the concern you have isn't about voice memo, but
we did want to try both. As I said I'm quite sure we did test screen recording
even though at first we weren't sure what you meant, but I think we did find
it. I'll have to go over with Wayne what we did, in case I'm missing something.
I hope someone has the answer to remedy this situation with screen recorder for
you and others. I possibly might have questions a bit later and if I do I'll
write back and ask whatever questions I have about the screen recording. Thanks
again for the mentioning of your situation about recording, since it can be so
useful in differing situations, that we weren't thinking about.

  Hello Arlene,

Voice Memos is a completely different app, in a way, screen recording is not
an app but a function of iOS. I know Voice memos and other recording apps work
fine and I see that some people can make a screen recording where Voiceover can
be heard although not very loud. I did include instructions on how to enable
the microphone for screen recordings in my original message, you do it by
flicking up or down on Screen Recorder to "Open Controls" and double tap, then
locate the Microphone toggle.

Using Google's GBoard with the iPhone

2018-11-04 Thread Jim Fettgather
Thanks.

Re: big regressions in accessibility facebook messenger

2018-11-04 Thread Donna
Davie, I have been following this conversation for the past two days. I have
opened Facebook Messenger, swiped to a conversation that I wanted to delete,
without opening the conversation I turned the rotor to Actions, flicked to
delete & was able to delete the entire conversation. With Messenger open, I
swiped to a group conversation, following the above steps, I was able to delete
the group conversation. With the messenger app open, I opened a conversation &
was able to delete my part in the conversation by turning the rotor to Actions
& flicking to delete. Facebook releases different versions of Facebook &
Facebook Messenger to different regions of the world at different times. I live
in the US. My thought is that your country has a different version of Messenger
than those of us who can’t recreate the problem that you are having. This is
the only thing that makes sense

Donnathat the rotor to action

Carolyn

RE: Rebooting a xr phone question please.

2018-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Janet,

Hopefully you figure it out by now, I was amazed by how many messages and at
times conflicting instructions this simple question generated. A simple google
search for "How to power off an iPhone XR" provided the steps and many links
where same steps were explained, here an example from Tom's Guide:

How to Turn Off the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max
On the iPhone XS, iPhone XR and iPhone X, the old way of turning off your
iPhone has gone the way of the headphone jack. No longer do you press and hold
the side/power button to power down; that action is now reserved for summoning
Siri.
Here’s what you do instead when you want to turn off your iPhone:
1. Press and hold the side button and either volume button. Make sure you press
down long enough; pressing too short could result in a screen shot if you’re
using the Volume Up Button.
2. Swipe the power icon from the left to the right on your screen to turn off
your iPhone.

The only thing here to keep in mind is that a sighted person immediately sees
the power icon, a blind person may have to swipe to it and then double tap,
this is the same as on the Apple Watch.
Also, you may simply want to get used to using the volume down button and that
way you'll never run the risk of accidently taking a screenshot.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi,
Ok I once again tried to do a typical restart, by pressing the power button and
wait for the option to shut down, but that only just brought up Siri, not a
restart though.
Any other suggestions?
Janet
Thank you.

Yes, press volume up and release quickly. then press volume down and
release quickly. Then press and hold power button and count to 12. Your
phone will reboot and come up like you're wanting. This is something you
would want to do if the phone is stuck or other things like that. If
you're just wanting to do a typical restart, power down by holding power
button until voice over says power down. Then choose the on screen
button to shut it down. then just turn your phone back on.

RE: big regressions in accessibility facebook messenger

2018-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
OK, then I guess I don't understand because for me in Messenger all messages
with one person are in a single chat not in multiple chats.
Not sure how they would be in multiple chats, if I message somebody and they
message me back and say we exchange 10 or 20 messages then that comprises a
conversation.
If I don't delete this conversation and two month later I message them again
and we exchange another 10 messages then for me they will be part of that
original conversation so if I delete that conversation it's gone and I see
nothing else from that person.

Thanx for your answer.

You do not fully understand what I am saying. All you said before is really
true you are right on one hand.
But, in formertimes, just flicking up when selecting the name of that person,
you could hit the delete button and all conversations you ever made with that
person were gone immediately. This can nolonger be done. You can do this with a
computer but no longer with an iphone or ipad. You can erase chat by chat but
not all conversations at once.

Everything you argue is right, yes you can still delete conversations one by
one. Go through your list of chats without opening them, you only see the last
chat you made with that particular person which is totally normal. Just flick
up and push the delete button, nothing happens and the thing that should happen
is that all chats of that person should have been deleted. this does nolonger
work many Belgian and Dutch blind people have tested that and it is not user

Hi folks

It is no longer possible to delete messages in messenger using the rotor tasks.
However, you can click on delete message but nothing happens. If you hold and
release after the 3 progress beeps you can access the menu for that person but
there seems to be no option to delete the conversation.

For the users of itunes 12.6.3 it makes no sense to roll back to a previous

Please report this bug to facebook accessibility.

Hello,
When you see the emergency SOS flick left to go to the top of the screen. You
should see slide to power off. For some reason power off and emergency SOS are
on the same screen.

RE: Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Fazil,

Screen Recorder is in Control Centre, touch the time or other item in the
status bar at the top of the phone and swipe up with 3 fingers, it is one of
the items in the bottom 3 rows of apps in Control Centre.
You can customize what is displayed in Control Centre in Settings > Control
Centre, but Screen Recording is not an app, i.e. it is not available somewhere
on a home screen, it is only available from Control Centre.

Not Sieghard, but with Screen Recording you get a video of what is happening on
the screen along with your narration.

There’s not a way to do this. Once you confirm that you’d like to delete the

RE: Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Arlene,

Voice Memos is a completely different app, in a way, screen recording is not an
app but a function of iOS.

Funny you mention this as just yesterday I was in this app and noted that it
doesn’t read in coming messages automatically at least not by me. The only way
I could get alerted to new messages was to lock the phone but then the sighted

Hi folks

It is no longer possible to delete messages in messenger using the rotor tasks.
However, you can click on delete message but nothing happens. If you hold and
release after the 3 progress beeps you can access the menu for that person but
there seems to be no option to delete the conversation.

For the users of itunes 12.6.3 it makes no sense to roll back to a previous
version of the app because when reinstalling the app on your phone you are
prompted to update the app otherwise it won’t work anymore.
Please report this bug to facebook accessibility.

RE: Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Sieghard,

Try as I may, I cannot get VoiceOver to be heard during a screen recording
either with or without Apple Ear Pods. The best I could do is to hear just a
whisper of VoiceOver during screen recording..

I tried disabling the noise cancellation option, located in the accessibility
area but it made no difference.

I will file a bug report on this.

Subject: Screen recording with Voiceover

I would really appreciate it if others who have newer phones than me could test
this to see if they get the same result. I have a 6S Plus so if people with an
iPhone 7, 8, XS or XR could do some testing that would be great. Please make
sure you flick down on the Screen Recording icon in Control Centre to Adjust
controls and make sure the microphone is turned on before starting. Then try it
with just the phone and see if Voiceover remains on the external speaker or
switches to the Earpiece and also try it with a Bluetooth speaker or wired
external speaker.

Below is a message I just wrote to Apple Accessibility regarding this. If your
findings match mine please also send a message and feel free to use all or part
of my message. Screen recordings which include Voiceover speech can be really
useful and they used to work. This way if you encounter an app with unlabeled
buttons or other elements which are not spoken correctly by Voiceover you can
easily make a demo and send it to the developer to show them. OK, here now is
my message:

Hello,

I'd like to point out what I consider a substantial bug with the Screen
Recording feature. If this is not considered a bug then I think it's a big
feature omission which should be addressed especially since it used to be
different. Here is the problem:

If I, as a Voiceover user, start a screen recording with the microphone enabled
Voiceover disappears or, to be more exact, it is banished to the earpiece where
it can be barely heard.
Not only does this make it difficult for a blind user to navigate and perform
gestures on the phone, but it also means that only what I say is recorded,
whatever Voiceover speaks or does not speak is not captured on the screen
recording video.

As I said, this used to be different. When screen recording was first
introduced as a feature Voiceover continued to speak on the external speaker
and what was spoken was captured on the video. This allowed a blind person to
demonstrate accessibility issues in apps or iOS itself. If, for example,
certain buttons were only spoken as "button" without a description as to their
purpose I could have made a screen recording to demonstrate this and then sent
the recording to the developer asking if the problem could be fixed in a future
update.
In iOS 11 or at least the last time I used screen recording for this purpose
which I am pretty sure was in iOS 11, I could still accomplish this by
connecting to a Bluetooth speaker, the audio would remain on the Bluetooth
speaker and would be captured on the video. Today I wanted to make a screen
recording to show somebody how to do something in an app and while Voiceover
continued to speak via the Bluetooth speaker, after I finished and played back
the video I heard my own voice as I was explaining the gestures I performed,
but there was no trace of Voiceover which really baffles me because all along
Voiceover could be heard loud and clear via the Bluetooth speaker.
How is it possible that my voice which is an external sound is recorded, but
Voiceover coming from the Bluetooth speaker, also an external sound, was not
picked up by the microphone?
I use an iPhone 6S Plus so after this didn't work with a Bluetooth speaker I
used a wired speaker and plugged it into the 3.5mm audio jack of my iPhone.
Once again Voiceover came from the speaker loud and clear. I started the screen
recording and made sure that microphone was turned on. After I finished I
played back the video only to find that again I could be heard clearly but
Voiceover could not be heard at all.

I don't have access to other phones such as an iPhone 7, 8 or higher to see if
screen

Hi Sieghard

What I want to stress is that it is nolonger possible to delete the whole
conversations of one contact at once, while the rotor function delete is
pronounced correctly but can nolonger be executed. And for sure this was the
case in formertimes.
Please would you all be so kind to report this bug to facebook?

Hi,
Funny you mention this as just yesterday I was in this app and noted that it
doesn’t read in coming messages automatically at least not by me. The only way
I could get alerted to new messages was to lock the phone but then the sighted
person with whom I was speaking kept saying I was disappearing in terms of
their view. I thought the app used to read in coming messages as they arrived
but perhaps my memory is faulty on this one. Are there any work-arounds for
this?

Subject: big regressions in accessibility facebook messenger

Voice Dream Reader works with Pub files too, and now Kindle has a “Send to

The phone connects to the AirPods with Bluetooth however; the watch connects to
the AirPods with airplay.
So what you need to do and you want to just listen to voice over from your
iPhone through the AirPods is to go in to the control center of your Apple

RE: Rebooting a xr phone question please.

2018-11-04 Thread janet gross
Maria,
When I press the volume up, and the power button, that is bringing up the S.O.S
emergency call. The samething when I press the volume down and the power
button.

HI,
Yes, I agree with you this shouldn't cause VO to change, but it does.

This shouldn't cause VO to change at all since you're turning the volume
up one and back to where it was when you hit the volume down. So here's
how to do it, press volume up and quickly release, then press volume
down and quickly release. Then hold down the side button and count to
12. This should give you your reboot.

RE: Rebooting a xr phone question please.

2018-11-04 Thread janet gross
Hi,
Ok I once again tried to do a typical restart, by pressing the power button and
wait for the option to shut down, but that only just brought up Siri, not a
restart though.

If you just want to shut it down, go into Settings and tap at bottom of screen
to go to bottom of list, the last setting is Shut Down. Double tap and you get
the usual screen with double tap to shut down. If you want h hard reset, do the

Re: Rebooting a xr phone question please.

2018-11-04 Thread Gordon
Yes, press volume up and release quickly. then press volume down and
release quickly. Then press and hold power button and count to 12. Your
phone will reboot and come up like you're wanting. This is something you
would want to do if the phone is stuck or other things like that. If
you're just wanting to do a typical restart, power down by holding power
button until voice over says power down. Then choose the on screen
button to shut it down. then just turn your phone back on.

You can also hold the power button with one of the volume buttons but don't
hold them in too long or you will call 911.

Holding volume and power at the same time together will always call 911.
I did this when I got my 8 and was putting the case on. So I always turn

This shouldn't cause VO to change at all since you're turning the volume
up one and back to where it was when you hit the volume down. So here's
how to do it, press volume up and quickly release, then press volume
down and quickly release. Then hold down the side button and count to
12. This should give you your reboot.

I would really appreciate it if others who have newer phones than me

so if people with an iPhone 7, 8, XS or XR could do  some testing that
would be great. Please make sure you flick down on the Screen

microphone is turned on before starting. Then try it with just the
phone and see if Voiceover remains on the external speaker or switches
to the Earpiece and also try it with a Bluetooth speaker or wired
external speaker.

Below is a message I just wrote to Apple Accessibility regarding this.
If your findings match mine please also send a message and feel free
to use all or part of my message. Screen recordings which include
Voiceover speech can be really useful and they used to work. This way
if you encounter an app with unlabeled buttons or other elements which
are not spoken correctly by Voiceover you can easily make a demo and
send it to the developer to show them. OK, here now is my message:

Hello,

I'd like to point out what I consider a substantial bug with the
Screen Recording feature. If this is not considered a bug then I
think  it's a big feature omission which should be addressed
especially since it used to be different. Here is the problem:

If I, as a Voiceover user, start a screen recording with the
microphone enabled Voiceover disappears or, to be more exact, it is
banished to the earpiece where it can be barely heard.

Not only does this make it difficult for a blind user to navigate and
perform gestures on the phone, but it also means that only what I say
is recorded, whatever Voiceover speaks or does not speak is not
captured on the screen recording video.

As I said, this used to be different. When screen recording was first
introduced as a feature Voiceover continued to speak on the external
speaker and what was spoken was captured on the video. This allowed a
blind person to demonstrate accessibility issues in apps or iOS
itself. If, for example, certain buttons were only spoken as "button"
without a description as to their purpose I could have made a screen
recording to demonstrate this and then sent the recording to the
developer asking if the problem could be fixed in a future update.

In iOS 11 or at least the last time I used screen recording for this
purpose which I am pretty sure was in iOS 11, I could still accomplish
this by connecting to a Bluetooth speaker, the audio would remain on
the Bluetooth speaker and would be captured on the video. Today I
wanted to make a screen recording to show somebody how to do something
in an app and while Voiceover continued to speak via the Bluetooth
speaker, after I finished and played back the video I heard my own
voice as I was explaining the gestures I performed, but there was no
trace of Voiceover which really baffles me because all along Voiceover
could be heard loud and clear via the Bluetooth speaker.

How is it possible that my voice which is an external sound is
recorded, but Voiceover coming from the Bluetooth speaker, also an
external sound, was not picked up by the microphone?

I use an iPhone 6S Plus so after this didn't work with a Bluetooth
speaker I used a wired speaker and plugged it into the 3.5mm audio
jack of my iPhone. Once again Voiceover came from the speaker loud and
clear. I started the screen recording and made sure that microphone
was turned on. After I finished I played back the video only to find
that again I could be heard clearly but Voiceover could not be heard
at all.

RE: Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-04 Thread Richard Turner
Not Sieghard, but with Screen Recording you get a video of what is happening on
the screen along with your narration.

Voice Memos only records your voice, and probably VoiceOver, but that doesn’t
help if you want someone to see what is happening on the screen.

no way I could think of to make such a screen recording which includes what
Voiceover is speaking.

I have a 6S Plus so if people
with an iPhone 7, 8, XS or XR could do some testing that would be great.
Please make sure you flick down on the Screen Recording icon in Control Centre
to Adjust controls and make sure the microphone is turned on before starting.
Then try it with just the phone and see if Voiceover remains on the external
speaker or switches to the Earpiece and also try it with a Bluetooth speaker or
wired external speaker.

Below is a message I just wrote to Apple Accessibility regarding this. If
your findings match mine please also send a message and feel free to use all or
part of my message. Screen recordings which include Voiceover speech can be
really useful and they used to work. This way if you encounter an app with
unlabeled buttons or other elements which are not spoken correctly by Voiceover
you can easily make a demo and send it to the developer to show them. OK, here
now is my message:

  Hello,

I'd like to point out what I consider a substantial bug with the Screen
Recording feature. If this is not considered a bug then I think it's a big
feature omission which should be addressed especially since it used to be
different. Here is the problem:

If I, as a Voiceover user, start a screen recording with the microphone
enabled Voiceover disappears or, to be more exact, it is banished to the
earpiece where it can be barely heard.

If, for example,
certain buttons were only spoken as "button" without a description as to their
purpose I could have made a screen recording to demonstrate this and then sent
the recording to the developer asking if the problem could be fixed in a future
update.

In iOS 11 or at least the last time I used screen recording for this purpose
which I am pretty sure

2018-11-04 Thread Holly Anderson
The problem that I have, and judging by this list I know I”m in the minority,
is that I really really do not want my watch to connect to my AirPods. Ever. I
don’t listen to music on it, and I never want to hear voiceover in my ears from
it. So the behavior as it stands now really works for me. But I can understand
why others would find it annoying.

Screen recording with Voiceover

2018-11-04 Thread Apple Gourmet-
Hi! I just sent you an email with the screen recording showing voiceover. You
can hear voice over but it’s not very loud. Please let me know if you got it.
Best wishes and many blessings!

You could try Dolphin Easy Reader, which is free unless you want different
voices.
Voice Dream Reader will also read ePub. In both cases though, they cannot be
DRM files, which are files tied to a specific company like Nook, iBooks, etc.

Hi Martin,

You would have to change your region to Australia. This is done in the watch
app on your phone, in General/Language & Region.

Best,
Anna

Re: big regressions in accessibility facebook messenger

2018-11-04 Thread SoonerAnnie
Robin, I know what you are saying. If the phone is locked, you get a
notification that a message has come in, and it is even read by VoiceOver;
however, if you are in a chat...sending messages back and forth...there is no
indication that the other person has sent a message unless you swipe and see if
you can locate one. Kind of a pain, but doable. Perhaps in the near future they
can get VoiceOver to read as it does in Messages.
