Re: Question about removing AirPods from one's Apple ID

2019-08-30 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Anna,
Thanks as always for being so kind as to respond. Yes in my experience I was
told to tell all devices to which they were connected to forget them then press
the button on the back of the case for approximately 8 seconds to get them back
into pairing mode and then remember to rename them once paired with the new
device under their more info button in bluetooth devices.
Take good care.

Hi robin,

I think you just have to tell one of your devices to forget them, and they are
removed from your account.

Best,
Anna

Re: Question about removing AirPods from one's Apple ID

2019-08-30 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
Oh dear I must respectfully disagree with the assessment. While yes the
explanation is clear the execution thereof when VoiceOver is in play is not so
as you can’t swipe left on them as confirmed by the Apple Accessibility team.
But as others have said the alternative is to go into bluetooth under settings
tell a device or all devices to which they’re connected to forget them. But
then you have to press the button on the back of the case for approximately 8
seconds to get the airpods into setup mode again and pair them to the new
device. However, once that’s done there’s one more step. You must locate the
airpods under bluetooth devices on the newly paired device double tap on more
info and rename them other wise they’ll retain the name they originally bore
when paired with their first device.
I hope that helps.

name of being generous and giving mine to a friend)

https://support.apple.com/kb/ph19302?locale=en_US . seems to make the process
clear in the Apple supported fashion. Summary: put the airpods in their case:

1.. Sign in to Find My iPhone on this device with your Apple ID (the one you
use with iCloud).

2.. In the Devices list, swipe left on the device, then tap Remove.

If your Apple Watch or AirPods come online again, they reappear in Find My
iPhone. If the device reappears, unpair it in Bluetooth Settings on all of your
devices.

I suspect that pairing the airpods with some other account would be helpful ...
so if you are doing the transfer to someone else, while your phone is off (or
you've bluetooth unpaired it with your phone) having them press the "re-pair"
button the case and take over the airpods that might obviate the need for
unpairing with all devices. Those of us who have paired to a bevy of our apple
family products ... can't easily test the "deactivate from findmyiphone")
because any powerup finds *some* bluetooth device of ours ;>

Well there are a few things to try for sure.

The first thing I’d do is see whether it really turned itself off or just
stopped talking.

First, make sure it’s plugged in even if you think the battery is fine.
Plugging it in will actually start it if it’s powered off in most cases. While
you’re at it, and if it is plugged in, unplug it and replug it in. Note whether
the little power noise happens.

Yes, now, when she says this is what I found on the net, I read it with Voice
Over.

When I had my first iPhone and never got proficient with it, and she said it, I
said, well scr**w you, and she said, I wouldn't talk to you like that.

My daughter-in-law asked me that even though it was a machine, did I apologize,
and I said I did.

I have a friend who said one of her friends got really provoked with Siri, and
talked to her worse than I did, and for several weeks, Siri wouldn't respond -
I guess you could say like a lovers' quarrel.

Siri doesn't always talk. Sometimes, what is asked, Siri says something like,
this is what I found, check it out.
That is usually a web site or three.
If the Siri feedback is set to always, and you ask a question that Siri finds
on the web, that is what you get and you have to use VoiceOver or Speak Screen,
to read the answer.

Too often siri writes her answers, but she doesn’t talk. I have an iPhone 6S.
What can I do to fix that?

but it didn’t work much better. Since I wanted to have a reliable phone when I

and Apple had to replace it. Even that was a challenge, I had to use Rick’s

not do. But we’re not to that yet.

Let me know if none of this gets it, I’m home all day if you need to call.

Hi Bonnie,

Unfortunately, the symptoms you describe may mean that your battery is
beginning to fail. I have known them to be 30 or 40 percent charged, the phone
just quits, and when plugged in, say some low digit percent. When I replaced
the battery in this IPhone 6 in the spring, it went from about 40 percent at
lunch to about 2 percent at 4 o'clock, having been used maybe half an hour's
worth in the interveening time. I got the battery replaced at Batteries Plus
for about 50 dollars. Being that your phone will update probably twice more, it
would be worth replacing the battery since you like your phone. If it does
this sudden quitting again, that definitely is not a good sign. If I were you,
I would take that other battery and cable along if I were going to be away from
home for very long, in case it quits somewhere very inconvenient for it to do
so.

This doesn’t guarantee anything I found with my last major problem, but try
muting and unmuting it. If the phone has power, and if you can make it mute and
unmute, you’ll get that little haptic on muting, this is another good indicator
that you have power to it.

If you don’t have power to it, leave it plugged in for about 20 minutes and try
all this again.

So we’ve got power and it mutes and unmutes, but still not talking. Plug in
some headphones. Or if you have it paired to a Bluetooth speaker or headset,
activate that. If that gets sound, but the speaker does not, we can go from
there.

If you know you have power, you can try turninging voiceover on and off if
you’ve set that up on triple click home.

If you still can’t get its attention, we’ll probably have to talk in prep for
you to call Apple.

I’ve always been able ultimately to recover my phone, there are a few things
that typically happen. But the very most recent time it was a total system fail
and Apple had to replace it. Even that was a challenge, I had to use Rick’s
phone to get into mine to turn off Find My Iphone for them. If we get to that
miserable place, I can do that for you as well because it’s something they will
not do. But we’re not to that yet.

Let me know if none of this gets it, I’m home all day if you need to call.

Re: Problem Solved, Guess I like This Phone More Than I Thought

2019-08-30 Thread Arnold Schmidt

If I were you,
I would take that other battery and cable along if I were going to be away from
home for very long, in case it quits somewhere very inconvenient for it to do
so.

Re: BSI, what happened?

2019-08-30 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I hope you have solved your problem by now, but if not, resetting all settings
will fix it. When my BSI got completely messed up a couple years ago with
symptoms similar to what you describe, that was the only way I found to fix it.
Be forewarned that you may need sighted assistance to turn VoiceOver back on.
Some have written to this list that VoiceOver eventually came back on after
resetting all settings, mine did not. Siri also is disconected from the net, so
it can't turn it back on, and when I hooked my phone to iTunes, it wanted me to
respond on my phone that I trusted this computer, which I could not do with no
VoiceOver. So, have sighted assistance backup if you need it.

Siri or dictation malfunction

2019-08-30 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
Is this happening to anyone else?

since updating, when I am asked by Siri if I would like to replay or call back
the person whose voice mail message I have just listened to, what happens is
that the last person I have called is dialed back, not the person whose message
i have just listened to., Along the same lines, sometimes the wrong person is
called back and this can happen when the names are not even remotely alike.
Come to think of it, it may b doing the same thing, simply calling back the
last person I called or texted.

Today it took three tries before Siri was able to call the
person I asked for that was in my Contacts.

It's too bad we can't just tell Siri to look in Contacts, since
if this is programmed in already, it isn't working all that well.

And I'm totally baffled why the more current IOS now takes me
to the message field rather than let me dictate and send a text message without
having to open the app. This was never the case when I was using 10.3. I think
it has to do with the persons who are not iPhone users but those who use
different types of phones, so their messages are not i messages. I went ahead
and created shortcuts for the most commonly called or texted friends, but that
hasn't helped either.

Any one or more steps I can avoid in performing any one
function, like calling or texting someone using my phone, the better. That is
why I have a smart phone to start with.

Is it possible all of this is because I use an
i Phone 6 and not a higher model phone?

You can make certain that the phone is not muted by moving the mute button in

restart it for it to come back up. Make certain also to tell Siri to turn

Re: Question about removing AirPods from one's Apple ID

2019-08-30 Thread Keith Bierman
https://support.apple.com/kb/ph19302?locale=en_US . seems to make the
process clear in the Apple supported fashion. Summary: put the airpods in
their case:

   1.

Sign in to Find My iPhone on this device with your Apple ID (the one you
   use with iCloud).
   2.

In the Devices list, swipe left on the device, then tap Remove.

If your Apple Watch or AirPods come online

again,
they reappear in Find My iPhone. If the device reappears, *unpair

it
in Bluetooth Settings on all of your devices.*

I suspect that pairing the airpods with some other account would be helpful
... so if you are doing the transfer to someone else, while your phone is
off (or you've bluetooth unpaired it with your phone) having them press the
"re-pair" button the case and take over the airpods that might obviate the
need for unpairing with all devices. Those of us who have paired to a bevy
of our apple family products ... can't easily test the "deactivate from
findmyiphone") because any powerup finds *some* bluetooth device of ours ;>

RE: Trouble With IPhone

2019-08-30 Thread Deb Cook Lewis
Well there are a few things to try for sure.

The first thing I’d do is see whether it really turned itself off or just
stopped talking.

First, make sure it’s plugged in even if you think the battery is fine.
Plugging it in will actually start it if it’s powered off in most cases. While
you’re at it, and if it is plugged in, unplug it and replug it in. Note whether
the little power noise happens.

I believe he said he got to the button for play and when he tapped it nothing
happened. Could there be a mute button and that page that needs to be tapped.

And, it does. It{s just that no sound comes through. I did that with another

Re: Apple's 'By Innovation Only' new iPhone event is on Sept. 10

2019-08-30 Thread Kelly Pierce
In past years, I downloaded the video from the new iPhone event as
soon as it was available and converted it to an MP3 and made it
available for list members to download. I have been finding the Leo
Laporte specials on his T Y T network useful. A panel covers the
entire event live and describes the action on stage and offers ongoing
commentary. It can be listened to live or downloaded as a podcast.

https://twit.tv/shows/twit-live-specials

I personally do not plan to convert the event for my personal
listening any more. Does anyone still want it or could folks just
listen to Leo and the crew with me.

Apple's 'By Innovation Only' new iPhone event is on Sept. 10

2019-08-30 Thread Richard Turner
Apple's 'By Innovation Only' new iPhone event is on Sept. 10 By Malcolm Owen
Thursday, August 29, 2019, 09:05 am PT (12:05 pm ET) Apple has revealed the
date of its annual September event, the venue of the company's refresh of the
iPhone product line, with invitations to the media confirming this year's event
will take place on Tuesday, September 10. Apple's "By Innovation Only"
September 10 event invitation Members of the media have been informed of an
event that will take place at 10 a.m. Pacific time in the Steve Jobs Theater, a
building within the Apple Park campus in Cupertino. AppleInsider will be
covering the event live, providing full analysis during and after the event,
with particular attention made towards the iPhone launches. Confirming earlier
rumors , this years' event takes place two days earlier than the one held in
2018, which was for the launch of the iPhone XS , iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.
The event has been a staple of September for the last eight years, starting
with the iPhone 5 in 2012, with the launch and release of the new models a
regular occurrence that capitalizes on the following holiday shopping period.
Loosely known as the "iPhone 11" collection, this year's models are rumored to
consist of three variants, with two premium OLED models accompanied by a third
value-oriented LCD version, similar to 2018. Aside from the expected
specifications bump, the new models will have one significant change over other
versions. The dominating rumor is that Apple will move to add an extra camera
on the rear of each model across the board, bringing the OLED models up to
three cameras and the LCD variant up to two. The extra camera is considered to
have a wide-angle lens to accompany regular and telephoto versions. There has
been some speculation Apple will add the "Pro" tag to at least one of the
models, expanding the branding suffix to its premier product line for the first
time. There is also the belief that Apple will include the ability to recharge
other devices , possibly wirelessly, remove 3D Touch from all models, and will
have a modified mute switch . Other products like a new iPad Pro family, a
budget iPad, and so forth are expected soon . It isn't clear if Apple will just
be talking about the iPhone at the event, or hold an event in October like it
has done in the past. .

RE: Siri doesn't talk; help

2019-08-30 Thread Richard Turner
Siri doesn't always talk. Sometimes, what is asked, Siri says something like,
this is what I found, check it out.
That is usually a web site or three.
If the Siri feedback is set to always, and you ask a question that Siri finds
on the web, that is what you get and you have to use VoiceOver or Speak Screen,
to read the answer.

Re: Siri claims I have no voicemail messages and refuses to dial!

Again, Siri says she cannot dial that number. It is curious that on my other
iPhone where I created a contact with a number 443, Siri will ring that contact
and that number takes me tgrough to the voicemail for that different carrier.
So, it cannot be because the number is too short. Hey, ho!

It could be it does not like short numbers. But have you tried saying dial
instead of call?

Im in the uk and it may be different here. I have an iphone XS with a BT SIM
and an iphone 7 with Giffgaff. I can access voicemails on both iphones eitger
from the Voicemail tab in the Phone app or by manually dialing the carrier’s
voicemail number. But siri says she cannot dial the numbrrs and if asked to
call voicemail, she claims i have no voivemail messages. The workaround on my
iogone 7 is to create a new Contact called Giffgaff with the phone number as
443 (Giffgaff’s voicemail) - and now i can ask siri to call Giffgaff and she
puts me tgrough to Giffgaff voicemail. This does not work woth the BT number as
siri tells me she cannot dial that number (1571). This seems to be a siri
problem - after all, my voicemail itself works fine.

Possible help with streaming via Safari

2019-08-30 Thread Jim Portillo
Greetings,

This list has always been of great help, so I hope you can help me problem
solve something.
I’m trying to stream a station that is not available through the popular apps,
such as TuneIn or OoTunes. It’s a particular kind of station that is online or
on the air in its original city.
When I go to it in Safari, I’m able to get all the way to where I can
double-tab on the icon to stream the station. It takes me there, but no sound
comes out. I know the station works because I can stream it via the computer.
If I remember right, something similar happened with something else I was
trying to stream via Safari. Is there some sort of setting I should be using?
I did go to the Safari settings but couldn’t find anything to help me with this
issue.
Oh, I also did try using the actual google app to find the particular station,
but it went through safari anyway and still wouldn’t actually produce sound
from the station. I do know it loads the station itself because the play list
comes up.
If anyone has any suggestions, please send them my way. I’d appreciate it.
Thanks.
Jim Portillo
