RE: Facebook Messenger app voice messages

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
For now a work-around would be to use a headset since I assume if you plug in a
headset or use a Bluetooth headset that they would play there? Sorry, don't
have any voice messages in Facebook to test it with.

Hi group,
I don’t know if this is only a glitch for iPhone users so thought I’d try
asking here. It’s been nearly 3 weeks now since Facebook messenger app has been
causing me problems when listening to voice messages; either they are voice
messages I receive or voice messages I send out, it seems to be staying on
speaker phone even when I put my phone to my ear to try to get them playing on
ear piece mode. I know it has nothing to do with my device because I can listen
to WhatsApp voice messages fine when putting the phone to my ear. I’ve even
tried rebooting my phone, uninstalling and reinstalling the Facebook messenger
app, it still didn’t fix the glitch. It’s been a few updates since then and the
glitch is still there. I’ve even wrote a review in the App Store and tried
reporting the bug to them on Twitter. No response what soever. I also know at
least one or two blind users who are dealing with the same issue when listening
to voice messages on Messenger.

RE: Unacceptable Behavior in Group MSM Messaging

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I just tried it without using the Add Contacts button and it worked for me just
the same picking people from the results which showed up.
I first typed part of a name and then when I located the person I double tapped
the name and it was inserted as the first recipient.
I then typed the next name, in this case "Alex" and since I have 3 or 4 people
in my contacts once again I touched the screen on the upper half of the phone
and then simply moved my finger (you can also flick right or left) until I
found the person and again double tapped, now I had two recipients.
I repeated with a third in the same way, then I was able to flick right to the
edit field where I could type my message.
Sorry, but I'm not sure what other way there would be to start a group message
except maybe for asking SIRI to send a message and to then name all the people
you want to send it to.

I appreciate your reply, but your procedure is not the one I typically use. I
should have noted that if I literally add additional recipients in the “To”
field via the keyboard the previously noted issue arises. The point of my
complaint is that I’d prefer not to open my Contacts at all. It used to work
this way just fine, but no more.

RE: Message found under spotlight but now?

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You first have to locate Messages on one of your home screens and then move it
back to where you want. I just the other day posted very precise instructions
on how to move apps, maybe you can check the archives or somebody can do it for
you; it's been too long of a day for me to do it tonight. Moving apps really is
super easy.

Thanks for the help. But how did Messages disappear from my home screen in the
first place? Earlier today, they were right where they had been, and then this
evening, they were gone, and appeared in the spotlight screen. How would this

RE: Having Proof of COVID Vaccination on Your Phone

2021-08-02 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah I’m just looking at this with a couple of medical staff,

I’ve been given a bit of cardboard,
The size of a business card that has the vaccination information on it,

That is seemingly our documentation for having been vaccinated

How long a bit of card lasts is going to be interesting,
Not even sure where to keep it.

And once again since the list is international, this of course only works if
you have a card. Here in British Columbia you got a few papers both for the
first and second shot which state that you had the shot, which vaccine you got
and whether you had it in your right or left arm. Apart from that there is the
digital certificate available via the Health Gateway, but no actual card has
been issued and while there is a Federal component of the Canadian health
system, it's primarily a provincial thing so I assume maybe some provinces have
given out a card and others have not.

Since this list has international subscribers, it should be noted that the NHS
app referenced is only applicable in parts of the UK. If those in the US or
other places without a government-based app for tracking their vaccination want
to do so on their iDevices, I suggest googling the subject and reading one of
the several articles that have been posted on the topic.

As others have mentioned, taking a photo of your vaccination card (both sides)
is one option. I chose to scan both sides of my card on my flatbed scanner and
saved the resulting file as a PDF image file. Since these cards usually have
handwriting on them, running OCR on them doesn’t work great and a saved image
file will be more easily read by a sighted individual wanting to check your
vaccination status.

RE: Suddenly can't find my text messages

2021-08-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
One thing you could do is go into the Apps Library and copy it from their on to
your home page. To get to the Apps Library, flick left with three fingers until
you get to your last home page and then flick left with three fingers one more
time to get into the Apps Library. What I would do next is touch the screen in
the middle to put focus on an item in your Apps Library and then flick up with
three fingers to alphabetize all of your apps. Now you can easily find the
Messages app and use the normal gestures to move the Messages app anywhere you
want on your home pages.

Re: Suddenly can't find my text messages

2021-08-02 Thread Duane Steele
Thank you, Jennie. I found it as you said I would. But how do I return the
Messages folder to the home screen where it was, and how in the world did I
lose it in the first place. LOL Thanks also for remembering that I sometimes
use my Braille display.

I know you use a Braille display, so what I would try is to open the spotlight
with dots 3456-chord. Now, type in messages. Now, go down to apps and it should

Re: Unacceptable Behavior in Group MSM Messaging

2021-08-02 Thread Bill Gallik
I appreciate your reply, but your procedure is not the one I typically use. I
should have noted that if I literally add additional recipients in the “To”
field via the keyboard the previously noted issue arises. The point of my
complaint is that I’d prefer not to open my Contacts at all. It used to work
this way just fine, but no more.

RE: an inaccessible app

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Why did you give them an earful? First of all, I just did a quick Google search
and it is indeed available on the Apple TV, second, if I were a company or
developer and I got an email with nothing but a complaint without even a bit of
constructive criticism or a question I would probably delete it.

Here is information straight from the Frndly website:

How do I add the Frndly TV App on my Apple TV?
Modified on: Thu, 15 Oct, 2020 at 9:14 AM
-
The Frndly TV App is available for download in the Apple TV App Store (Apple TV
Gen 4 and newer).
To download and install:
1. Press the “Home” button to access your Apple TV home page
2. Open the App Store on your Apple TV
3. In the menu bar, select the Search button
4. Enter "Frndly TV"
5. Swipe down to select the Frndly TV app
6. Follow on-screen prompts
7. Sign in with your email address and password

Best regards,
Sieghard

Has anybody tried FRNDLY TV or know if it's on apple tv?  It is on Fire tv and
very inaccessible, so I wrote to them and gave them an earful.

If anyone is using it ok on Apple tv, let me know and I'll try there.

RE: Editing Home Screen

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, basically similar to the Voiceover practice area in Voiceover settings
except that as Malcolm said, it will close help again the first time you get it
right, in the Voiceover practice area you can try it in different way to figure
out which one suits you the best. And you can continue to practice until you
are satisfied and then exit manually.

One thing that may prove useful to add to Sieghard‘s most helpful description
is to use Voiceover Help to familiarise yourself with the jesters.

Do a double four-finger tap to start Voiceover PHelp. Now try the two-finger
Scrub, when you’ve got it right you will exit Voiceover Help.

And once you practice it you really don't have to start near the top left or
even go left to right and down.
As long as you do 3 distinct movements with 2 fingers it will be recognized as
a scrub, this can be left to right, right to left and down and back to the
right or it can be straight across left to right and back to the left, right to
left and back to the right or even start near the top or in the middle and go
straight down, then back up and down again or start a bit lower and go up, then
down and back  up again.
I would recommend to go to Voiceover Settings > Voiceover Practice and try it
there because Voiceover will then tell you if you are doing it right.

To perform the scrub gesture, pretend like you’re wiping off a smudge on your
iPhone screen. Place two fingers in the upper left hand corner of the screen,
swipe them to the right, then the left and down and finally back to the right.

Let's assume you have the following apps in your top row:

Let's further assume you want to put the Camera app in third place, where

So, you put focus on Settings, then flick down until you hear "Drop Camera

If you selected to "Drop Camera after Settings" the Camera app would go to the

right of row 1 and the Clock app still would end up in row 2 on the very left.
Think of "Drop before" that the app goes to the left of the app you are on
which means in place of the app and drop after means it goes to the right of
the app you are on and the next app gets pushed over.
There will also be an option to create a folder with the app you are on, for
example, if you are dragging the Camera app and you go to the Photos app you
could create a folder with these two apps which iOS would give a default name,
this name can be changed later and if you are dragging an app and put focus on
an existing folder then in addition to drop before and drop after you will have
an option to drop the app into the folder.
Lastly, after you go to your first app and select to drag the app you can go to
a second and third app or even more and on each of them you can flick down to
where Voiceover says "Add to drag session" and double tap. Voiceover will say
that you are now dragging 2 apps or 3 apps or however many you select. This is
very useful if you already have a folder and want to add a number of apps to
the same folder.

RE: Editing Home Screen

Here is what a Z-shape looks like:

Put your iPhone in front of you in the normal way, i.e. the charging port on
the bottom, the volume buttons on the top left and the side/power button on the
top right.
Now run your finger along the short top edge of your phone Starting on the left
near the volume buttons and going all the way to the right near the power/side
button
Now move your finger diagonally from the top right corner to the bottom left
corner
Lastly follow the bottom edge from the bottom left corner to the bottom right
corner
You have just made the shape of an upper case letter Z

Another way:
Take 3 pens, pencils or tooth picks
Put 2 of them horizontally on a table one on top and one further down so they
are parallel, maybe tape them down with a piece of scotch tape
Take the third, feel where the right edge is of the top pencil or tooth pick
and place the third one so it goes diagonally from the top right to the bottom
left

There are many ways to explain it, but just as most blind people probably know
what a triangle or ectangle looks like they can learn what a letter Z looks
like.

RE: Document scanning question

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would dispute this, especially if you use an app like OneDrive where there is
a document scan mode you get extremely good scans, but of course it depends on
your ability as a blind person to take a good picture. I don't want to sound
condescending, but it really takes "ability" and of course practice and best is
practice with a sighted person watching until you have the feel for how high to
hold the camera and so on.
The same applies to depositing cheques via the bank app, it took me a few tries
with sighted help, but now I can typically do it perfectly all the time and
with just one try for taking a picture of the front and back of the cheque.
Maybe it's 20 years of woodworking, but I have an extremely good sense of
distance, a very steady hand and a good sense of orientation as well which
comes in handy with respect to holding the iPhone level. Last week I was
joining two 10-foot cedar boards together for making a raised garden/flower
box. I have a tool called a Domino Joiner which cuts a square hole into the
boards and once set up it references off the top of the board so they line up
perfectly. You then stick a hardwood domino into the hole and it goes half way
into the one board and half way into the other once again this is to line them
up and give lateral stability for when you glue to the boards together. The
tool does have some tabs where you can reference against the edge of the board
when you start, but over the 10-foot length I wanted to put a domino every 2
feet so we layed the boards out the way the would be glued and touching each
other, then my wife made a pencil mark on each board in exactly the same spot.
This mark then needs to get lined up with a line on the tool because if you
don't cut the hole exactly in the same place on each board it will or course
not fit and by exact I mean it has to be less than a sixteenth of an inch.
After we marked the boards I joking told my wife that I would put the tool in
the right spot on the line just by feel and while right in the middle of the
10-foot board I was maybe an inch out, I often was less than half an inch away
from the line. Still of course not good enough for the work, but it's just an
example about how closely I can judge distance.

I don't think any of the IOS scanning programs do a satisfactory job of
scanning documents. In my opinion, there is nothing better than a flat-bed
scanner and some program for doing the ocr. Kurzweil 1000 and openbook are
somewhat pricy but do an excellent job. Serotek (or whatever they call
themselves now) sell docuscan for a couple hundred dollars and would, I think
meet your needs. JAWS itself has convenient OCR which renders excellent results
but doesn't export very well.
Handytech--who's name, I think, has changed--sells Iread for much less than
either k1000 or openbook and would also meet your needs.

ON the iPhone, I think KNFB Reader will tell you the orientation but the

I am not sure which other iPhone scanning apps report orientation.

Think of "Drop before" that the app goes to the left of the app you are
on which means in place of the app and drop after means it goes to the right of
the app you are on and the next app gets pushed over.

There will also be an option to create a folder with the app you are
on, for example, if you are dragging the Camera app and you go to the Photos
app you could create a folder with these two apps which iOS would give a
default name, this name can be changed later and if you are dragging an app and
put focus on an existing folder then in addition to drop before and drop after
you will have an option to drop the app into the folder.

Lastly, after you go to your first app and select to drag the app you
can go to a second and third app or even more and on each of them you can flick
down to where Voiceover says "Add to drag session" and double tap. Voiceover
will say that you are now dragging 2 apps or 3 apps or however many you select.
This is very useful if you already have a folder and want to add a number of
apps to the same folder.

To scrub, you put two fingers on the screen like you are going to tap, then
flick a bit to the right, to the left and back to the right. I do it all the
time. It is so convenient, when I want to get out of something right now
instead of having to flick back to the Back Button.

You are trying it the old way with dragging the app, much easier to

Now find the app you want to move, let's assume it's the Camera app,
and flick down again until you hear "Drag Camera", now double tap.

You can now take your finger off the screen and go to wherever you want
to put the app, if you are in a folder on the second home screen and you want
to put the app on the first home screen, exit the folder by doing the scrub
gesture, then go to your first home page and go to where you want the app.

Let's assume you have the following apps in your top row:

App Store, Calculator, Settings and Clock

Let's further assume you want to put the Camera app in third place,
where Settings now sits, this means Settings would get pushed to the right and
the Clock app which is the last in the row would get pushed to the right as
well which means it will end up in the second row on the very left.

So, you put focus on Settings, then flick down until you hear "Drop
Camera before Settings" then you double tap and the Camera app is placed before
Settings which means Settings is pushed over.

If you selected to "Drop Camera after Settings" the Camera app would go

Couldn't you use the Be My Eyes app first to get a sighted helper and make sure
you have all the documents properly oriented, then scan/photograph them.
You could also use Aira, if it is only a couple of pages the free 5 minute call
will probably be enough and they will take the picture for you and tell you how
to hold your phone and then you can access it in the app or they can I think

RE: Editing Home Screen

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Not sure if you saw my previous message, but all you really have to do is make
a 3-part gesture with 2 fingers on the screen.
You have to try it and decide for yourself which feels more natural to you,
going from left to right and back, from right to left and back, from top to
bottom and back or from bottom to top and back.
The Voiceover practice area would be the best place to try it.

RE: Having Proof of COVID Vaccination on Your Phone

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

It probably depends on where you are and if that is offered, here in British
Columbia, Canada we can go to the provincial Health Gateway website where you
have to either register or sign in with the BC Services card app on your phone
(our health card) and then you can get a digital certificate, you can also add
notes to your health record, check your COVID-19 test results if you had to
take a test, prescription medications and they are just working on making lab

Re: Battery Issue in latest update

2021-08-02 Thread Vicky Collins
Oh, wow, I have a first generation iPhone SE showing maximum capacity of 66
percent and still showing as supporting normal peak performance. The maximum
capacity on my iPhone 7 is 78 percent, and it is also showing supporting normal
peak performance. And, grin, no, as I've mentioned before, what with living out
in the country and not near a place to do so, I don't plan to replace the
batteries on them. I'm just trying to get the most I can out of them before I
break out my newer iPhones and use them on a regular basis. I do have them
backed up and ready to go, as the battery life on these older phones is now
lasting less and less time between charges, as well as often very suddenly
dropping 20 percent or more at a time and sometimes just shutting off
altogether. Thus, when I go out for more than just a few minutes, I take both
phones with me just in case.

RE: The scrub gesture [was "RE: Editing Home Screen"]

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

You are trying it the old way with dragging the app, much easier to flick down
to Edit mode, double tap and Voiceover says "Started Editing".
Now find the app you want to move, let's assume it's the Camera app, and flick
down again until you hear "Drag Camera", now double tap.
You can now take your finger off the screen and go to wherever you want to put
the app, if you are in a folder on the second home screen and you want to put
the app on the first home screen, exit the folder by doing the scrub gesture,
then go to your first home page and go to where you want the app.
Let's assume you have the following apps in your top row:
App Store, Calculator, Settings and Clock
Let's further assume you want to put the Camera app in third place, where
Settings now sits, this means Settings would get pushed to the right and the
Clock app which is the last in the row would get pushed to the right as well
which means it will end up in the second row on the very left.
So, you put focus on Settings, then flick down until you hear "Drop Camera
before Settings" then you double tap and the Camera app is placed before
Settings which means Settings is pushed over.
If you selected to "Drop Camera after Settings" the Camera app would go to the
right of Settings where before you had the Clock app, this way Settings would
stay in third place, Camera would now be in fourth place which is on the very
right of row 1 and the Clock app still would end up in row 2 on the very left.
Voiceover will say
that you are now dragging 2 apps or 3 apps or however many you

RE: Unacceptable Behavior in Group MSM Messaging

2021-08-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I don't experience this, just tapped on compose to test it and I added the
first recipient, then I tapped on Add Contact and I searched for a name, when I
tapped on it the contact opened up and I tapped on their mobile number and
Voiceover said "Added Recipient" and it took me back to the main message
compose screen. I repeated this twice more this time adding people by going
down in my list of contacts instead of using search and each time Voiceover
said "Added recipient" and it went back to the main screen.
After I added 4 recipients I swiped to the message field and double tapped to
write my message, but of course at this point I cancelled the message since I
didn't really want to send one.
If you can't swipe to the message field you can also press Enter on the
onscreen keyboard and it will advance you to the message field, I actually
often do this instead because this way I just do one gesture and I get to the
message field, otherwise I have to swipe a couple of times past Apps and Camera.

Subject: Unacceptable Behavior in Group MSM Messaging

I am experiencing a quite annoying behavior in the Message app when I try to
send a group text. This does not occur if I address a single recipient, but
when trying to send a text to more than one recipient this happens.

OK, so, when I address a single recipient and then procede to the Subject and
Body of the message all is well.

However, once I include an additional recipient I find the app “gets stuck” in
the addressing portion of the dialog. I find that I must activate “Add
Contacts” to bring up the “Contacts” dialog. At that point, I need to activate
the “Cancel” button whereupon I return to the main message dialog and can then
procede to the Subject and Body fields to complete the message.

I find this quite annoying. Does anybody hae any suggestions as how best to
avoid this aggravation (without sending the same message multiple times to
multipole recipients).

I am not sure which other iPhone scanning apps report orientation.

RE: Having Proof of COVID Vaccination on Your Phone

2021-08-02 Thread Alan Lemly

RE: Document scanning question

2021-08-02 Thread llumpkin

Re: Editing Home Screen

2021-08-02 Thread regina alvarado
If the scrub gesture is too difficult, which it was for me, go to settings,
Accessibility, enter voiceover, go to commands, then swipe to touch gestures,
go to heading scrub, and swipe onceto the right and it says two finger scrub I
believe and escape. Go into that and set another gesture to use for the scrub.I
use quadruple two finger tap and it works just great. It’s a little more of a
long step, but if you can get the gesture down quick, it works. It’s almost as
fast as the scrub would be. Hope this helps you. If you have any other further
questions let me know.

Let's assume you have the following apps in your top row:

Let's further assume you want to put the Camera app in third place, where

Unacceptable Behavior in Group MSM Messaging

2021-08-02 Thread Bill Gallik

Podcasts using spotify?

2021-08-02 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has used spotify on the iPhone to listen to podcasts?
I'm trying to help someone and from what I can see the podcasts section
is a total mess and isn't very usable.
The reason they use spotify is because a lot of the podcasts they listen
to are spotify only and have moved away from using other clients.

TIA.
