Siri as seen on TV?
When I woke up and turned over in bed and asked Siri what the weather was like, she said, You said, What's the weather like? and then she told me, which was good because it was raining and my chicken was ill. But, is there a way that I can just have her answer me, without telling me what I said? LIke the commercials on TV, where she just comes back with the snappy response. It's sort of anticlimactic if she repeats back to me what I said. Way to cut out this part? Re: my Sprint Iphone 5 is in my hand! + syncing apps between two I devices?
As a caveat to the above waste of everyone's time (sorry), I have a real question, and that is: I have bought apps for my Ipad 3, which I can presumably use on my Iphone 5. I've backed both up to my Mac, but how do I, or can I, transfer apps that I've already got from pad to phone or vice versa? Seems like a device backup only shares the apps you installed on that device, but if I have a pedometer app on my Ipad, the same one would work even better on my Iphone. Thanks! making Skype work on Cell data + changing my subscription to a different E-mail account
Hi, listers: First, how do I make apps like Skype work over cellular data? Do I need an app to make myself a hot spot? I have unlimited data, mostly 3G with some 4G LTD coverage, ought to be good enough for at least voice calls, if not video. Second, I need to change my subscription from my ATT mail account to my Gmail account, where all my other lists are. How does this happen? Getting an Iphone 5 on the Sprint network
Hi, listers! At last, the inevitable has finally happened, and I'm getting an Iphone 5 32G (black [of course]) locked on the Sprint network. The customer rep told me that it'd have just enough battery life to let them change its number and connect it, once I called customer care with my old phone. My question is, once I take it out of the package and put it into its new Otterbox Defender case home, how should I proceed? Should I turn on VO with a triple-click home button, or should I let Sprint ping it and log it in or whatever first? What to expect is always good to know. Clarification re: Announcing the new GPS APP Etc.
Bit of clarification here: • I know nothing at all about anything to do with Garmin and Seeing Eye or any partnership either of them may have attempted to make with anyone. My question was a purely theoretical one: What if, as Neal Barnfather excellently points out, certain blind-user-specific features were added to an existing GPS framework? Wouldn't the cost offset be much more mild, spread across a greater market base? I then went on to say that this would have the added advantage of further eroding the barriers between blind and sighted computer users, and maybe even blind and sighted people in general. I never once implied that this had already been tried and failed; I simply don't know, and it's beyond the scope of my intent. • At no time did I ever once say that you should *NOT* use a product simply because it's a blind ghetto, thing or not. I've got a Trekker Maestro which, in its hayday, I loved. I'll have every conceivable GPS app on my I device, regardless of politics and only bounded by cost. I'm not that kind of radical. :) • I love bullets. • That is all. • Really. Re: App recommendations for a somewhat unusual purpose?
I've used Skype video calls to help me get numbers off new credit cards for verification purposes, and in one memorable vacation, used a plant cam, set-up with the AIM video-chat feature to help take care of a friend's garden in Maine, while she and her husband were on honey-moon. Re: Announcing the Seeing Eye GPS app free preview, new 2013 Sendero products, and remote CSUN access!
I hope to get an Iphone with Sprint as my carrier, and hope to have it some time in the next two weeks. After that, you can bet Im going to test every GPS app around, including this one. Maybe what we should be asking ourselves here is not whether this is a ghetto product, for the blind, but whether there's universal access built into it, so that sighted people would use it and find it valuable as well? Then, the question becomes not how much can a blind person afford, but rather, What is the fair market value for this app, based on a general market? It seems to me that, even as we demand shrilly that Apple and other companies build in universal access to their products, so should Sendero or whatever other ghetto of the blind, products come out build in universal access. Let's depolarize this argument. Re: Announcing the Seeing Eye GPS app free preview, new 2013 Sendero products, and remote CSUN access!
This is my point; if Sendero is smart, they'll built an app that EVERYONE will want, even if blind people most of all, and then they can charge less for it, reaching a broader market. Re: Announcing the Seeing Eye GPS app free preview, new 2013 Sendero products, and remote CSUN access!
I guess that's a theoretical question, then: If Sendero made their app prettier, more visually appealing, more eye candy, with maps and whatever, would it cost too much in terms of labor and drive even the fair market price up, or would it drive the price up to target an app for a backwater, splinter market like the blind Iphone users? I have no hard answer to this, just curious. Re: Announcing the Seeing Eye GPS app free preview, new 2013 Sendero products, and remote CSUN access!
So it would still make more sense to partner with a company who makes such a silent, visually appealing app, and piggy-back a Sendero type level of verbal interaction at the user's command. This, after all, is what VoiceOver does to the native IOS when it's invoked. Then, this amortization thing you speak of can be spread not only over a wider customer base but over two companies' resources. The problem with a product that costs significantly higher because it's targeted primarily toward blind people … Okay, let me start that again… *another* problem with this approach is that there are agencies and the like with deep pockets who will justify such a purchase in their rehab or other budgets, which keeps up the barrier between the blind and the world at large. I see a win-win for Sendero to partner with a more conventionally familiar name, I.E. Garnin or someone, or even with the Apple Maps app, provide their product as an option when wanted, and at a significantly lower cost to everyone. Will I get it and all the maps I need when it comes out? Most likely, unless it's off the scale. I personally hope at least one , or home, map comes free with it, or perhaps a set, one from each map source. But making the price too high might not be as damaging as making the target user base too small. Reinventing the wheel seems a bit redundant, if you'll allow me to repeat myself a little bit one more time again. Re: Announcing the Seeing Eye GPS app free preview, new 2013 Sendero products, and remote CSUN access!
Wow. well, thanks for making it personal, there. Appreciate that, but not so much. What *I* personally have a problem with, since you brought it up, is anything that raises the barriers that sight imposes between blind and sighted persons, instead of lowering them or making that barrier meaningless. If this is a white cane versus a black or tan or whatever cane, fine. If it a GPS app that has a cheaper price but has a sub-level for blind people, designed by blind people, then I think that's a better way to go than reinventing the wheel of GPS apps for the blind, charging them and only them or their agencies more, and relegating the blind to their own separate portion of the market. Apple has shown by example that this is not necessarily the result for blind people who use technology. Many sighted companies--certain US-based airlines spring to mind--merge to provide a more complete range of services--why couldn't this be a more feasible approach to a GPS app that is universally accessible? The same argument you use when you say that one company making devices universally accessible does not make the industry standard, is used all the time to keep whole countries from going green, by switching to alternative energy sources. As for your comparison to canes, I guess you haven't been to any page selling canes or their accessories lately--if so, you'll find a large list of said accessories visually designed for matching with your shoes, hand-bag, golf bag, whatever. And, just to clear this up, I'm a 23-year veteran with four guide dogs' lives worth of service to my credit, I've lived all over the US in every conceivable environmental and mobility situation. I'm just very lucky to be a basic black, wearing type individual, so I haven't had to accessorize my black lab much. Oh, and they have tons of guide dog harness accessories, not to mention the usual run of silly doggie booties and sweaters and the lot. You say that Some things are just better when they are done with the blind person in mind, I have to ask, Who is doing these things? a sighted overlord? Things done with me in mind have almost killed me too many times to count, sir, and if you must know, it is things done with me and my good in mind that I have a huge objection to. So should every thinking person. pedometer or distance traveled meter for Ipad?
I have an Ipad 3 32G running the latest IOS for Ipad. I know GPS is nonexistent for this unit, and I agree it would probably be impractical, but since apps that are pedometers or odometers, measuring distance traveled irrespective of global position, might there be such a thing for my Ipad 3? I could set it, lock the screen, stow the Pad in my backpack and then just walk, and when I unlocked the screen, I'd have a distance traveled, say, 3.5 miles or 1.3 KM? And, rejoice, rejoice, I will be getting my Iphone in March. *bounce!* YAY • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. I couldn't find Itreadmill, but I did find something called LazyWalk, which has some unlabeled buttons, but which showed me that running up and down my apartment three times with the OtterBox roof on and screen locked, I traveled 85 feet. Re: Deleting Gmail messages for Clwyd
I do not have the problem of receiving old messages on the Mac; it doesn't show me repeats. but, when I hit Gmail with my Ipad 3, it shows messages from June,2 011, and will download 50 after 50 after 50 bundles of them, keeping me from getting to newer stuff. That's why it's annoying; were it not for this behavior, I wouldn't even know old messages were stored there. In 2011 or so, I discovered that Gmail had kept all messages since the inception of my Gmail account in 2008 or 2009. Re: Deleting Gmail messages for Clwyd
I just figured Clwyd was good, but I didn't wanna delete it for fear of the subject not being recognized any more. :) I kinda like the way it sounds now… Clwyd … nyah. What happens is that my Ipad 3 will download, 50 at a time, all 10,000 messages or however many there are, *BEFORE* showing me any message older than, say, 2011. I understand that, in your world, you'll see a message from, say, today, *before* you see 49 other messages from 2011, but in my world, the laws are apparently different. Thus, Gmail on my Ipad is useless to me until I tell it, HEY! Don't download messages that have already been gotten! Which, as above, I do not know how to do. I know for a fact that my Ipad will not show me new or current Gmail messages first because I've tested it by shutting down my MBP, my main computer, and then later going and grabbing mail with it which shows me Gmail with time stamps from within the period at which I was using my Ipad to go through mail. Thus, if you send me a message on my Gmail today, and I am limited to my Ipad for mail access, I will be up late at night three days later still trying to see what it was you sent to me. My MBP uses POP for Gmail, though I do remember setting up the account for IMAP on the site. It has been suggested that changing to IMAP might help with this Gmail deletion dilemma upon whose horns I squirm, but then it's also been related that it will *NOT* help. Forgive me if Im a bit confused. *grin* Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Ipad 3 speakers not playing out loud, only throug headset, sorta
Until now, I've only ever played VoiceOver through my Ipad 3's external speakers. I've used it to stream TV and play other music through the headset jack, but never played music or TV out loud. worrisome behavior of Ipad 3 after attempted update to 6.1
Hi all: I turned on my Ipad, got the software update message, clicked Install and hit the I Agree button. It did its thing, VoiceOver came on, said, Ipad, image. Then, the only other thing I could elicit, other than the status bar, were different languages, some of which VoiceOver couldn't pronounced. Double-tapping on the Ipad image (English version) did nothing. My screen locks up almost immediately, and though I can unlock it with a single tap of the home button, I get the same, very restricted behavior. My question is, is this normal? How long should the update take? It's been a good ten minutes or so that my Ipad 3 has been like this. When I tried to shut it down, the shut-down routine didn't happen. So. What should I expect here? Thanks. :) • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: worrisome behavior of Ipad 3 after attempted update to 6.1
It wasn't quite that straightforward. I unlocked the screen, swiped over to the languages area, turned the rotor to Language, one-finger flicked up until I heard Default, split-tapped, problem fixed. App Switcher confusion
Hi. Thanks to all who've been so helpful thus far as I fall in love with my new Ipad. So, I don't understand App Switcher. I have a few apps in App Switcher which appear to be running in the background, such as Music, which don't need to be there. I was told to double tap and hold on one of these; when I do, it says Editing app. I must be missing a step at this point, because if I dismiss App Switcher and re-launch it, the app is still there. So, what's the step I'm missing here? Conversely, sometimes, if I launch an app from the home screen, it does *NOT* appear in App Switcher, even though I want it to. Thus the subject line. Thanks for clarification. *bow* • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: App Switcher confusion
Okay, so let's say I dismiss all my apps from App Switcher. That means they're all shut down? But, things that don't seem to take up much resources like FaceBook, Twitter, Skype, the AIM client, … They can just stay waiting for Push notifications, and will be in the app switcher. Here's an interesting thing: There's a four-fingered swipe gesture that switches you to the next app in the queue. However, sometimes, when I did that swipe, I heard the cutest little child-like voice saying what I thought was app Switcher, or maybe I was just hallucinating. How does one refine this four-fingered swipe to rapidly switch applications? Re: App Switcher confusion
Hi, Teresa. Thanks for the tips on the App Switcher; think I got a handle on it, as in earlier posts. No, this is a four-finger swipe to the left or right from within an app itself. If you do it right, it'll say Switching to, and then whatever the next or previous app in your queue is. If you do it wrong, it gives you a kind of high whimpering noise which I find rather amusing. A three-fingered flick doesn't do this. Quite handy to switch back and forth between my messenger clients. no delete button for selected messages?
Hi, folks. I've made a huge breakthrough in Mail, and with the Edit button and sliding down the column, split-tapping as I go, I can now select however many messages are in the window--about 18-20 before I reach the bottom of the screen. (Is there a way to scroll this list down without acting on it?) However, once all my messages are selected, I do NOT find a Delete, button. Closest I get is archive. Also, the rotor still wants to switch me between containers, lines, words, characters; there is no Action setting. Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.
Hi, David. I told both Gmail on the server (I think) and Mail on the Mac to delete copies of messages from the server after download, but no one ever listens. :) So, yes, I'll have to slay this particular hydra as well. I seem to be consistently having a problem with the Slide one finger up or down, gesture. I think it's being confused with my swipe. There's an adjustable page scroll spot on my home screen that I cannot seem to slide up or down to change value, but can split-tape it. Same thing with my double tap and hold, gesture; when switching the keyboard between letters and numbers or symbols, When I double-tap the more, spot, it'll say, more, numbers, then I have to double tap and hold again to get the numbers to actually appear. It's almost three gestures in one just to switch the keyboard map. When I slide up or down to change a value, Vo seems to interpret this as a swipe or two-finger flick-up and starts reading the whole screen. Every time I check the rotor, it's set to containers. So, maybe I need to refine my gestures a bit more. But, I've taken this thing out of the boxes and am now up to using Skype, so I'll get the rest; I look forward to playing with it. Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.
For the moment, I'musing standard typing. I'll switch to touch typing eventually, but for now I like to split-tap when I am sure I've got the letter I want. I'm not slow, I have a hearing loss, and I have like eight passwords that NEED to be entered correctly or else all sorts of cluster arrangements will occur. So, if I split tap on the More, numbers, button, I hear a faint click, but the keyboard is still the same. If I touch more, numbers, then lift up, double tap and hold, I hear a different noise which is a three-tone noise, which means to me the keyboard has changed, and sure enough, it has. I'm not sure what Im doing here that's nonstandard. And, no, I'm sorry, but there are no other fingers accidentally touching the screen; this was the first habit I cured myself of a long time ago. No, I think perhaps there's some misinterpretation involved when the IOS says Slide up or down to change the value, but Voiceover says double tap to change the value. I'm wondering if this is a similar occurrence to when I power down the Ipad and VO says slide to power off, but what is needed is a double-tap there. In the case of the sliding up or down, it's important if I want to slide my way through a message list, for example, and split-tap to select for deletion when I've pressed the edit button. Once I figure an efficient, fast way to sort through Mail, I'll be able to start using my pad for just about everything I use my laptop for. Already. Ipad 3 and the hearing aids, button in settings

Now, I CAN instruct Itunes on my MBP to share all 86GB of my music library over my WIFI network, but is there another way I'm supposed to move music from my MBP's local library to my Pad? Keep in mind that I'll want to do this manually, choosing, say, three three albums by Metallica, but not three three by Kenny G. Next: There is no next question. for now. :) Thanks again! I'm having such a blast with this thing! Hi again, folks! Re: Good podcast explaining Mail in IOS6?
It doesn't seem to be set up that in my screen layout, and yes, I' in portrait mode. :) Across the top, I have all Inboxes, then a bunch of buttons; forward, move, reply, compose. The two columns you speak of don't seem to correspond to a message list and a message body section. There also seems to be no way to just hear the RE: portion of this list. And, however hard I try, I cannot seem to go down the list sequentially, hearing all the subject lines and picking a message by flicking to the right to hear it. Also, how the HECK do I delete all 50 messages in my Inbox? E.G., how do you select a bunch of messages and delete them all? Gmail is regurgitating old mail to my Pad. Re: Good podcast explaining Mail in IOS6?
Well, the first thing, I learned, is to go into Setting / Mail and turn off the preview pane. This seems to make the list a lot more sensible. I'll work more on it tomorrow, but as of now I've got Skype up and running on the Pad as well, just finished a Mac tutoring session using Skype on the Ipad, actually, and now need to link my Facebook contacts to Skype and so on. syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.
Hi, folks: Thanks to all who've been very helpful to me so far in learning the Ipad 3. Today, I charged it via the USB cable to my MBP15, and it came up in Itunes just as it should. I authorized backup over WIFI now, too, so the hard connection won't be necessary. Now, I understand that the Ipad was backed up to my computer (Though I cannot find this backup anywhere through Finder). What I wanted to do, however, though, was sync all my contacts from the MTP 8ONTO* the Ipad, so that it would know all my mail addresses, etc. I have no evidence this was done, or that it can be done. Also, I'm having a hard time making Mail perform in a way I understand. For one thing, Gmail insists on showing me messages from June, 2011!, which I can deal with, but I cannot figure out how to move quickly between messages, either in list or in body (I'd prefer to navigate by the regard, ing, subject line column), and I don't understand how to select all and delete them from my Inbox when I'm dong. Is there a podcast I can inhale on how Mail works in IOS6? My last question would be how to get audio books or music from the Macbook ONTO the Pad, assumedly through Itunes, manually? I have 86GB of music and only 27GB free on the Ipad. :) Thanks, all! • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Good podcast explaining Mail in IOS6?
Hi, listers: I'm being baffled by Mail on my new Ipad 3, and I don't understand how Itunes transfers work, etc. Rather than clutter the list, is there a source for good podcasts? • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: cannot for the life of me find the @ sign...
No, I wasn't aware of that. Things seem to move around based on context. I can't figure out, for example, how to tab between, say, Apple ID and Password fields, and end up putting the wrong info in the wrong one. What Im trying to do is sync my contacts, *JUST* my contacts, be they Twitter, FB, Skype or Gmail (all basically related), between Pad and Macbook. *NOT* My music library, as I only have 5 MB of storage in the Cloud. So, do I do this via Bluetooth, by the WIFI network they're on, will this set up a Gmail account on my Pad the way I want it, … this is my project for today. :) Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Want to syn just contacts between new Ipad 3 and Mbp15.
Do I have to do these things through Itunes? I haven't set it up on the Pad yet, but my MBP uses Itunes all the time. I want to sync my FB, Twitter, and Mail contacts, and have already dded both Gmail and Icloud accounts to my pad's mail. I also have a bunch of questions about more efficient ways to scan down a long list of messages in Mail on the Pad. Does the next message, button delete or archive the message? Is there a way to just swipe down and hear just the subject lines, and what's the equivalent of VO J, to jump to the message body? is this all done just by touching different areas, and a matter of muscle memory to remember which location things are on the screen? This is fun!
My problem is that once I double-tap or split-tap to start editing in a text field, I can't get *OUT* of that text field to the next form control. The only way to do this is for me to find it on the screen and split-tap on it to move the insertion point to it. Is there an easier way? I was playing around with the rotor to see if it could take me between form controls but am not having much joy that way. Also, yes, you're right, it's 5GB, not 5MB of storage. I set my MBP to clear messages off the Gmail server once they're down, so I hope Gmail doesn't just spam me with 2 and some years of old messages. However, what I cannot figure out how to do is sync my new Ipad with my old MBP15's contacts--Email, FB, Twitter, etc. Also, I'm looking for a quicker way to go through messages and delete them from the Inbox in Mail on the Pad… So many questions! Re: Want to syn just contacts between new Ipad 3 and Mbp15.
My experience is that a right and left finger flick does not move through the list of messages; I wish it did, I may have done it wrong. I'm careful to keep it in portrait, and looked at autorotation lock but didn't turn it on. There are some things which landscape will be useful for, especially if my sighted friends want to watch videos or use Maps or whatever. Re: cannot for the life of me find the @ sign...
Where is this Done button? I have never found such a beast, and wish I had. Also, though I have an Icloud account activated on my MBP15 and my Pad, I cannot figure out how to Tel Itunes on my MBP to back up anything to the cloud and, as I say, I have way too much music, and only want to back up contacts and documents to the pad until I figure out how to manually add stuff to it. I guess I have to turn on Itunes on the Pad before I can do any of this. Re: Want to syn just contacts between new Ipad 3 and Mbp15.
Yes, I spent some time in the VO practice area, I remember you suggested this a while ago when I was practicing on another Pad--this one is now mine, so am setting it up from the box, literally.I don't know why a horizontal finger flick does not take me through the message list as you say it should, unless I need to split-tap on the list to interact or select with it. Oh, I didn't think of using the USB cable; I thought I could do it via Bluetooth or their shared networks. I don't see an Ipad section, in Itunes on my MBP currently. Update on the at sign + new Ipad 3 thread
Hi, everyone who's chimed in on my Ipad thread. First, thanks to those whose consensus gave me a good place to look for the @ sign I need to complete my Apple ID. Unfortunately, I still haven't found it. :) That's okay, I have to work this project in with the other things I try to juggle without crying over spilt milk too much. Second, this Ipad has Siri, and I'd love to find a way to tell Siri what my Apple ID and password are, but that doesn't seem to be an option. Or, is it? I'll have more to say about this later, Im sure. Thanks again, though. Re: Update on the at sign + new Ipad 3 thread
Thanks, Sieghard: Thanks for this; I haven't tweaked VO's settings yet, so it's on the beginner settings, highest verbosity, unfortunately. Thus, as it is now, split-tap is not enabled, and you have to tap twice to enter a character into the text field. Going to have to fix this sooner than later. Re: Update on the at sign + new Ipad 3 thread
No, I turned on Split keyboard, because I heard it say Split Keyboard On. It's not the screen, it's the keyboard itself which has been squished over to the left and right to make way for the message body. There's a gesture to get rid of it. Please excuse me, Monni, I *LIKE* split *TAP*. I am annoyed by the split keyboard on the bottom of my screen. I want it to be all one keyboard; I don't care if the screen is split, with the settings and other junk on the left and the relevant app taking up center and right. *grin* I want to know what gesture I used to turn split keyboard on; in fact, I want a comprehensive list of gestures and what they do and how to do that Live long and prosper, thing… Mark BurningHawk Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 Home page: Http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
