Subject: RE: Help Needed with Screen Recording not Capturing Audio

Hi Godwin,

I finally grabbed my bluetooth speaker which also has a 3.5mm input jack so it
can be used as a bluetooth speaker or as a wired speaker. When I used it
wirelessly via bluetooth Voiceover switched to the phone’s earpiece as soon as
I turned on screen recording. However, when I used a 3.5mm male-to-male cable
to connect my iPhone’s headphone jack to the speaker’s input jack screen
recording worked fine, Voiceover continued to play through the external speaker
after I started screen recording.

I did try various other options such as turning off audio ducking, turning off
automatic switching to speaker for phone calls in Voiceover Settings > Audio
and also in Accessibility Settings > Audio Routing I switched the setting from
automatic to speaker, but none of these things helped. Each time when I tried
screen recording Voiceover switched to the earpiece and the only work-around
currently as far as I am concerned is to connect an external speaker using a
wired connection.

I should say also that I have an iPhone 6S Plus and I am using the iOS 11.3
public beta 5 so while many may still be on 11.2.6 it does not appear that this
bug is fixed in 11.3 at least not so far. My guess is there might be one more
beta 6 next Monday or Tuesday, March 19 or 20 and that the iOS 11.3 public
release will follow the week after, between Monday, March 26 and Wednesday,
March 28. Of course it is quite possible that public beta 5 was the last beta
and that iOS 11.3 will be released to the public next week.

I will again write to Apple Accessibility and tell them that in my opinion this
is a bug and hopefully others will do so as well.

Best regards,
Sieghard

It is a bug, screen recording used to capture audio just fine, but at this
point it does not work any more since Voiceover switches to the earpiece. If
you turn it up all the way you can just barely hear it on the recording.
You could try to plug in an external speaker, haven’t tried this, but it may
work.

Anna,

Thanks so much for the quick reply. The funny thing is that when I follow your
instructions and turn the microphone on,Voiceover goes quiet and I have to lock
my iPhone 7 running iOS 11.2.6 to get it back. I seem to recall reading about
an issue with the screen recorder and maybe I've just stepped into it. I really
want to be able to use this feature to record video with the Voiceover audio
but I'm either still leaving off a step or something is not working right.

Thanks again.

Hi alan,

It sounds like the mic was off during the recording. To turn it on, press hard
on the Screen Recording button if you have 3D Touch, or double-tap and hold it,
flick to Open Controls, and double-tap. You'll be able to turn the mic on on

Well, it's been a learning experience although my final comment is that the
screen recorder at least on my iPhone 7 doesn't record the Voiceover audio loud
enough to be usable. Apple Accessibility was very helpful at making some
suggestions and the main thing they helped me with is to turn off my audio
ducking setting. Audio ducking has never really worked all that well for me and
has consistently been a problem causer with Voiceover. I noticed that when I
turned off audio ducking and restarted my phone, the app that had the problem
which I was trying to record in order to submit to their Support, now works
correctly. I'm leaving audio ducking off going forward.

I will end this thread by saying that the screen recorder just doesn't work
right on my iPhone 7. With wired earpods connected, I hear Voiceover just fine
when recording but since audio output is going to the earpods, nothing spoken
by Voiceover gets recorded. When I disconnect the earpods and try another
screen recording with my volume turned all the way up, I can just barely hear
Voiceover enough to generate the recording but the volume is so low on that
recording that it could not be submitted to anyone for support purposes. I told
this to Apple Accessibility but my sense is that different devices are getting
different results with the screen recorder. My support rep has an iPhone X and
she seems to be getting pretty good results. Why am I not surprised that their
latest $1000+ device works the best. I believe you're getting similar results.

At least I figured out the issue with my app and no longer need a screen
recording. Thanks so much for your help with this thread.

  Hi Alan,

Try turning up the volume while VoiceOver is speaking through the earpiece.
You probably can't get it as loud as would be ideal, but you may be able to get
it to a tolerable level. That was my experience

Thanks for your help. This is the sort of frustrating inconsistency with iOS

outlined and leave my wired earpods plugged in, I hear Voiceover just fine
through them as I'm making the recording but none of the Voiceover audio is
picked up in the recording. I can hear that the microphone is on because the
low level hiss is picked up but none of the spoken Voiceover words are
recorded. If I have no earpods connected and try to screen record, I can't hear
any audio so that making the recording is all but impossible as I'm not getting
any audible feedback. When I play that recording within the photos app, I can
just barely hear the Voiceover audio but it certainly isn't loud enough to
submit it to anyone for tech support with a Voiceover issue.

I guess I'm stuck either writing Apple Accessibility, opening a case with
AppleCare, or going to the Apple Store. Any of these options will take
considerable time which I find exceedingly frustrating.

Is anyone else having a problem similar to mine or did I just dream a past

RE: Help Needed with Screen Recording not Capturing Audio

2018-03-05 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Anna,

Alan

Hi Alan,

Try turning up the volume while VoiceOver is speaking through the earpiece. You
probably can't get it as loud as would be ideal, but you may be able to get it
to a tolerable level. That was my experience.

Hi alan,

It sounds like the mic was off during the recording. To turn it on, press hard
on the Screen Recording button if you have 3D Touch, or double-tap and hold it,
flick to Open Controls, and double-tap. You'll be able to turn the mic on on
the screen that opens. Once it's on, it should be on for all future recordings
unless you turn it off.

Hi Tom,

Screen Recording is an app you can access through control Center, but you need
to make it visible first. To do that, go to Settings//Control center, choose
Customize Controls, and choose Insert Screen Recording.

2018-03-05 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Alan,

I have an iPhone X. I didn't have a luck-up when I turned on the mic. When I do
a recording, VoiceOver gets quieter; I think it goes to the earpiece - but it
doesn't stop altogether. I tried the same thing with a 5s and had the same
results. Maybe try restarting your phone to see if you'll have better luck.

Best,
Anna

RE: Help Needed with Screen Recording not Capturing Audio

2018-03-05 Thread Alan Lemly

Alan

Best,

Anna

explained in the Apple Support article and used it to record a one plus minute

video from the Photos app, no audio was captured. Is there a bug causing this

I would very much appreciate any assistance so I can submit a recording which

Is the screen recording app on the phone or do you need to download it?
