Hi Brandon,

What I was trying to say is that I recommend typing with uncontracted Braille. 
I also changed my typing feedback to characters under hardware keyboards and 
then it would tell me what I was backspacing. I hope this helps a little bit. I 
gave up and went back to my trusty Bluetooth keyboard. Lol.

Hi,

For some reason, I can't get the Orbt writer to tell me what I am backspacing. 
I may toy turning my settings to words or something to see if that works, but 
for now, I can't tell what I'm writing.

My Orbit Writer does announce what I'm deleting when I backspace. I can't track 
down a setting that would change this though. I will say though that if you're 
using contracted braille then the Orbit Writer will get confused when you start 
backspacing. You can avoid this by using uncontracted braille or switching to 
the on screen keyboard to do your deleting.

I was also just looking through my Orbit Writer documentation, and another 
misconception I'd like to clear up is that you can connect your Orbit Writer 
through the braille support in VoiceOver, but you can also connect it as a 
keyboard through the Bluetooth settings. I don't do this myself, but I know 
some expressed a concern about having to go through the VoiceOver settings to 
pair the Orbit Writer. Obvoiusly, if you skip VoiceOver then you'll be losing 
out on functionality you only get through VoiceOver.

OK, that's good to know and thanks for the correction. Maybe it's different on 
newer watches or newer versions of WatchOS, but I could never pair my Bluetooth 
keyboards, like my Logitech K-380 with my Apple Watch. When researching this on 
line, I found articles like the following that said Bluetooth keyboards weren't 
supported on the Apple Watch. Of course this article is a bit dated, so maybe 
things have changed.

Since the Hable One connects through vanilla Bluetooth as opposed to 
VoiceOver's braille settings, I just assumed it would have the same problem 
connecting to my Apple Watch that I had with the K-380. Note I said that I 
didn't think this would work, so I didn't state it as a fact, and I'm glad I 
was wrong and corrected.

Watch. Since Bluetooth keyboards aren't supported on the Apple Watch, I don't 
think you could use a Hable One or a Ribo with the Apple Watch. You also can't 
use querty Bluetooth keyboards with the Apple Watch, so this is something 
VoiceOver users can use that sighted people can't do.

You don't need to go into VoiceOver settings to connect the Orbit Writer. You 
just need to do that once when you initially pair the Orbit Writer. After that, 
it just connects automatically when you turn on the Orbit Writer. It's also 
pretty simple.

The Orbit Writer basically just has 10 keys on it. Eight for the braille dots, 
one for the space bar and then a multifunction key which gives you arrows, 
menus, select and the like. I'm not sure how the Hable One could give you many 
fewer keys then that. Plus having fewer keys isn't always a good thing. You'd 
have to provide more details on why this is a good thing with the Hable One.

I got the Orbit Writer before I ever knew about the Hable One, so I didn't do a 
side by side comparison. I took a look at the Hable One recently, and I 
definitely liked some things about it, but since I'm not unhappy with my Orbit 
Writer, I couldn't see spending another $275 for the Hable One. Note that one 
advantage of the Orbit Writer is that it only costs $100.

Finally, I can see how someone could prefer one product over the other, but I 
don't get how feelings could be so strong that someone would say they'd never 
touch the other product. I'd never say never when it comes to technology.

I just purchased one right before Christmas and absolutely love it. It is very 
sleek and fits right in my purse. It pears almost instantly, and there is no 
lag with the keyboard input. I am self-employed and always writing messages on 
the go. Worth the money for sure.

It sounds to me like you are doing everything correctly.   You may want to try 
this.  Go to settings.  Go to blue tooth, then find the orbit writer.  Then 
forget the device.  Then also go to voice over, braille, and make sure that the 
orbit writer isn't showing up there.  If it is, also forget the device.  Then 
go back and re-pair it again.  See if this works.  Let us know.

Yes, and in the Apple world, backspace is delete.
Say you write the word brightness with the contractions for right and ness and 
decide you want a different word, if you backspace over it, does VO speak each 
character as you backspace, which deletes each character?

Mickey, I have my writer set to echo words most of the time. But in the rotor 
settings  on my iPhone, I have “characters” right next to “words” so, if I am 
editing something prior to sending it, I can easily flip back and forth between 
“words” and “characters” with space plus dots 2 3 and space dots 5 6. Of

Mickey, I have my writer set to echo words most of the time. But in the rotor 
settings  on my iPhone, I have “characters” right next to “words” so, if I am 
editing something prior to sending it, I can easily flip back and forth between 
“words” and “characters” with space plus dots 2 3 and space dots 5 6. Of 
course, this applies only to the phone. HTH

Hi mickey,

Actually, the new firmware that will be out next week, I hope, works fine with
any setting, other than while deleting with dot 7. If you just have it set to
words, it is not going to speak each letter you delete, so if you have used a
contraction, it is a bit confusing if you need to backspace over it.
But, that is true I think for any braille device, but with a physical braille
display, you can read what you are deleting.

No automatic switching.
So, I have my new SE on channel 1, and I paired my old SE on channel 2, and my 
work iPHone on channel 3.
If I want to switch to my old SE, I would press space, plus left arrow, plus 
dot 2 and I would get 2 short vibrations if the iPhone is locked, which is what 
should happen, then when I unlock the old SE, after a couple of seconds, the 
Writer will now be active with that phone.

I am only going to address the Bluetooth with Apple devices as the USB 
connection to a computer has a little way to go.
With keyboard echo set to characters, I am having no trouble at all writing and 
editing with the Writer.
I am finding responsiveness of the keyboard to be excellent. At least with iOS 
14 public beta 4. all of the braille commands work very well.
The  Command, Shift, d to send an email, for example.
If you press space+dot7,1, then immediately press space+dot7,4 then quickly 
press the letter d, an email will be sent.
I sometimes have to do that twice, but I think that is because I was not quite 
fast enough.
Navigating with the rotor works as expected.
this is much better for me than doing the on-screen braille.
The Writer is so small and light I am taking it everywhere with me.
Just my experience, but I hope others are finding the same.

sequence, or is it automatic? Say you are using the Writer with your phone and

is considered dot 7, and an enter key, which is considered dot 8; it has to be 
paired as a braille device because it does not have the standard QWERTY keys.
You have to press 1 to 6 keys at the same time to make letters, and/or 
contractions, and computer braille uses all 8 dots.
So it has to be run by a screen reader.
A standard keyboard does not depend on a screen reader with braille translation 
tables.

There has been some discussion on pairing devices to the Orbit Writer. While I 
haven’t received my unit, it’s due any day now, I’ve been studying the manual 
and would like to offer a clarification that could easily be confusing. Let’s 
say you wish to pair a device to the Writer on Bluetooth Channel 2. You would 
activate the channel by pressing Space Left Arrow and Dot 2. Now, here’s what I 
believe can be confusing. The manual indicates that you should press the same 
key combination “to pair.”  This actually places the channel into Pairing Mode. 
You then have to use your device’s Bluetooth search function to actually 
connect the device. I realize the manual does describe that process. At first, 
I was confused because I’m accustomed to using the term Pairing Mode which the 
manual does not indicate in those words. Perhaps this is obvious to everyone 
else, but people who are new to pairing devices could be thrown off by this. I 
also realize that the biggest adjustment I will have is depending on haptic 
feedback for all Writer System events. I’ve never done this, I’ve always 
depended on a combination of speech and braille. So there will be a learning 
curve here.

Simon,
If a keyboard is using the braille layout, IE, 6 dots, plus a backspace, which 
is considered dot 7, and an enter key, which is considered dot 8; it has to be 
paired as a braille device because it does not have the standard QWERTY keys.
You have to press 1 to 6 keys at the same time to make letters, and/or 
contractions, and computer braille uses all 8 dots.
So it has to be run by a screen reader.
A standard keyboard does not depend on a screen reader with braille translation 
tables.
I hope that helps.
In short, you have to know braille to use the keyboard.

and you should find a link to the Orbit Research page.

Yes, you have to use VoiceOver Braille settings to do the pairing.
It is seen as the Orbit Reader 20 with its serial number right now.
That may change in iOS 14, I hope.

My initial few thoughts on this experience are I loved the price point of the 
Braille Writer. I like using the center joystick to interact with my phone. The 
braille input though, isn’t thrilling me, and I am learning how much I liked 
the reading side of a braille display. I didn’t realize that.

Hope all of you are well despite this whole covid19 situation. I just have a 
question about the orbit writer. Is the orbit writer free for members of the 
talking library?
If so, how do you all request one?
Did any of you get the device when participating in the national convention?
I am considering getting one since I want a more portable braille display to 
always carry in my purse and keep up with reading braille.
I have the focus40 from freedom scientific even though it’s not the latest 
generation, but it works well for me.
 I mostly keep it at home since I use it with my Mac computer and it helps me 
still read braille.
What has been your experience with the orbit writer? And is their a difference 
between the orbit reader and orbit writer? If so, what is the difference?

I have to admit I’m not a braille user but is this device not simply a braille 
layout keyboard?
Therefore it shouldn’t need anything more than Bluetooth I would think?
