Re: iPad Mini for Listening, bluetooth speakers and the Turtleshell, was: Today's iPad event
Hi Rick, Did you get your new speaker dock on target.com? Just curious. I don't yet have anything with a lightning connector. And I will probably end up getting an iPad mini, because the iPod touch fifth-generation is now kind of old in terms of its hardware. But eventually, like when I upgrade my phone next year, I will need a new doc, as my current one has the 30 pin connector. In fact if you just go to target.com and search for iPhone 5 speaker dock, you will see a few of them. FYI, another possibility is a Bluetooth speaker that has a USB charging port. This means you can play to the speaker via Bluetooth and charge your phone via the charging USB port. In fact this is what I did to replace my Klipsch iPhone speaker dock which only worked with a 30 pin iDevice. The one I decided on was the SoundFreaq Kick for $99. It has controls for play/paus, volume up/down, and prev/next and it has the USB charging port. It sounds terrific and will go about 8 hours on a charge if you want to use it as a portable. I just keep it plugged in but if I need to go portable with it I have the option. It's bigger than a JamBox but still quite portable and sounds way better than the small JamBox does. I would easily get 2 or maybe even 3 days out of my iPhone battery if I used a different device to listen to books when I am at home and of course doing email and browsing would be nicer, too. I could even turn off WiFi on my iPhone most of the time which would save even more battery. However, even if I had an iPad Mini, I would still often use my Outdoor Tech Turtleshell speaker. It has Play/Pause, volume up/down and skip forward/back buttons and a speakerphone so I can answer a call on it. Often if my iPhone battery is low I just plug it in in the bedroom and my 1,100 square foot house (that's the upstairs, basement is the same) has very few spots where I loose reception. I can just be in the living room or the kitchen with my Turtleshell speaker and listen and I can even take it in the shower where I have a rack a bit higher than head height and where it stays mostly dry. The Turtleshell is IPX 6 dust and waterproof so it doesn't matter if it gets damp from steam or even if it gets a few drops of water or a bit of a splash on it. Anyhow, I highly recommend that you just go to a store like Best Buy or an Apple Store if you have one closeby and just ask the staff to show you some docks. Most stores have several out and on display so if you bring your iPod Touch you can try them right there, see how the iPod fits, how it sounds etc. If this is not an option then just order from the online Apple Store or Amazon, just go with a merchant who offers a good return policy and then be careful when you unpack it so that if you do want to send it back you can put everything back together exactly as it was. RE: iPad Mini for Listening, bluetooth speakers and the Turtleshell, was: Today's iPad event
Russ, There is plenty of space even with an iPhone in a dock, some docks even have enough space to accommodate a snug fitting case. I have an older Philips Fidelio. It is rounded on the back with a kickstand and has a 30-pin connector in front the phone/touch stands on. I purchased the pin-to-Lightening adapter, and it worksjust as well. You can find this on Amazon for $59. It has an internal rechargeable battery, base boost and auxillary port. The Amazon link is below. Which bluetooth adapter did your wife get for you and how much? I've been thinking about getting something like this since I have a few 30 pin docks around the house. I've seen some on Amazon but I'm afraid the transport controls on the dock might not work with the adapter plugged in. It's the Bluetooth adapter Bose sells for that unit. You pop out the plate like the iPhone jack or an iPod template and put the Bluetooth adapter in it's place. I thought my wife was nuts when she told me the adapter was another hundred bucks. Now I'm delighted she did! Pairing was easy. I just opened my iPhone 5s and opened Bluetooth. Then I pressed the paring button on the adapter and it paired with my phone just like that! --- Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2013! Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Russ, I just ordered a refurbished Mini yesterday for the reason you mention, i.e., better sound for reading BARD books. I got a 32GB black for $360-something, including taxes. I could have waited for a refurbished new Mini, but I am not sure the improvements in processor and screen do much for my uses, plus the higher price. I also purchased a very nifty case and keyboard for the Mini off Amazon. Re: Today's iPad event
I have an iPad one, which I still use for some things, like audible and iBooks. But I'm definitely interested in the new mini. I don't care about the display, but I like the fact that it now has the same processor as the full iPad. Unless the full iPad air sounds significantly better than the many, I'm definitely putting my pennies aside for a new mini. RE: Today's iPad event
Looks like the Touch line is on its way to being phased out eventually. Apples' going to probably want to push that market towards iPad Mini's or the iPhone C. You go to the Apple store and there are iPod Touches in the new space gray and whatever white they're calling it now, but it's still the fifth generation model with the same specs. Now that the updates are done for the year, I think I may try to score a refurbished Touch instead of going for the large tablets. It would be nice to load up on Bard books, dvs stuff and have a separate iBooks, music and video option other than the phone when out and about. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of SSEric Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2013 1:09 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Today's iPad event I was under the weather yesterday, so did not get to listen to the event. RE: Today's iPad event
Hi. I saw the event today, and I was disappointed that they didn't go into more detail on how much storage you could get on an iPad. This will influence what I get. If the 128 gig iPad is still out there I'll get that, because I have a lot of stuff to put on it, such as over 37 gigs of music, apps and Bard books. If 64 gigs is the max, I'll go with a new iPhone. Guess I'll wait until it comes out to find out. Kevin Minor, Lexington, KY kmi...@windstream.net -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Today's iPad event
I don't think Apple will phase out the iPod /Touch family any time soon. The iPod Touch never has been updated every year and while I thought they might give it an A6 processor, I am not surprised it is unchanged. Maybe they have something else up their sleeve for the spring and there will be an iPod Touch upgrade then, if not I'm quite sure we'll see one next fall. Anyhow, the Fifth Gen iPod Touch is a super nice device, it can't get any thinner or lighter, it already has a 5 MP eyesight camera, it already has SIRI so apart from giving it an A6 or A7 processor and Touch ID there isn't a lot they could have done with it. I would like to have the ipad mini for listening to books because the speaker has much louder volume than my ipod touch. -Original Message- From: Cristóbal Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2013 1:24 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Today's iPad event Looks like the Touch line is on its way to being phased out eventually. I have not seen mention of it yet, but has there been any changes to the ITouch or Nano, etc.? All thanks! Eric -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: Today's iPad event
Hi Russ, There is a much cheaper way to do this, just plug in a speaker or use an inexpensive bluetooth speaker like th eBeatbox or some of the ones you can find on www.monoprice.com. Of course I don't want to take away your excuse to buy an iPad Mini *smile* -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Russ Kiehne Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2013 4:38 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Today's iPad event I currently use an ipod touch 5th generation.
