Re: Using the Australian voice as default

I already wrote to accessibil...@apple.com to ask for a feature that would
allow users to install more than one premium voices. The fact that this
isn't possible is pretty annoying for people that rely on more than just one
language.

The language rotor doesn't control whether you have the compact voice or the
hq voice. You can only have one hq voice on your phone at a time, and when
you change the default voice in Settings General International format
region, it takes a while for the new hq voice to download and replace the
former one. Whether your voice is compact or hq is controlled by the compact
voice control in the voiceover settings in Settings General
accessibility voiceover. Toggling this to compact voice off will change
the default voice to hq if it has been downloaded; otherwise you would just
keep hearing the compact one. This toggle has absolutely no effect on any
voice but the default one and all voices except the default one ( the one
you set in format region) will always be compact.

I just read the last 2 messages in this thread, so pardon me if I

not just add her to the Language Rodar in VO settings, and then switch
to her whenever you like? Why go through the bother of changing the
international settings and having to download the HQ version of karen,
and then perhaps having to get the HQ version of the US voice again? I
suppose to each their own, but it seems easier to me to add Karen to
the language rodar and then I can have a choice of when I want to use
her. Before iOS 5, I used karen for my main voice in VO. Since iOS 5
though, the US voice has gotten a lot better, IMO. Karen is still an
option on my language rodar settings, should I want her at any point,
but I'm back to the good old US of A voice. Incidentally, I also like
the Irish English voice, and she also holds a place on my language
 rodar, grin.

Yes, you can use Karen. But you have to go into settings general

 want
the hq voice rather than the compact voice, you will have to be patient
because it doesn't download the hq voice right away apparently. I ended
 up
resetting my phone but it sounds like if you just give it time and maybe
even lock the screen and put it on your charger for a while, the hq voice
should eventually download. I haven't had any issues with having
 Australia
chosen in Format Region except that siri has given me a couple of pieces
 of
data in kilometers. But somebody said weather was in Celcius; that hasn't
happened to me however. Just keep in mind that if you switch back the hq
Samantha has tao download again so you have to wait for that to happen.
Personally I plan to stick with Karen unless I uncover a major problem
 caused by using her.

You can get the Australian voice immediately by changing the voice in settings
General International format region, but the voice will be the compact
one so turning compact voice off and on will show no change in the voice you
hear though it will now be Australian. So Australian will be your default at
that point but you will only be able to access the compact voice until the hq
voice downloads. Also, even if Australian is default, if you set another voice

You can get the Australian voice immediately by changing the voice in
settings General International format region, but the voice will be the
compact one so turning compact voice off and on will show no change in the
voice you hear though it will now be Australian. So Australian will be your
default at that point but you will only be able to access the compact voice
until the hq voice downloads. Also, even if Australian is default, if you set
another voice in the language rotor, you will of course hear that voice but it
won't become the default.

Everyone might want to save the below message I say this with
light-hearted humor, but not all the way light-hearted. How many times
does this same thing need to be explained over. I think that this topic
has been beaten to death and I've seen several list posters give good
and clear directions on getting either one hq voice or the other, and
why you can and cannot do something in regards to which hq voice you
want and yet the same questions keep popping up. I'm of course talking
about the last 5 days or so.

So please, if there is a subject for which you are not clear about, save
the message and re-read it over and over and it will make sense.
Especially if the list poster has explained it the right way. For
example, like the below one.

I am in Canada and use the Australian voice as the default. I find this
voice to be far superior in quality to the standard voice and is so much
easier to listen to. For this to work properly you need to change your
regional setting. Go to settings, general, international, region format and
set to Australia. The voice automatically changes to Australian English as
default when this is selected. In about ten minutes the HQ voice will appear
and you can then decide to use it or the compact voice by turning this on in
 VoiceOver settings.
 Hope this helps.

Yes, you can only have one HQ voice installed at a time. The HQ voice
you have depends on your regional settings, and switching from one to

I am in Canada and use the Australian voice as the default. I find this
voice to be far superior in quality to the standard voice and is so much
easier to listen to. For this to work properly you need to change your
regional setting. Go to settings, general, international, region format and
set to Australia. The voice automatically changes to Australian English as
default when this is selected. In about ten minutes the HQ voice will appear
and you can then decide to use it or the compact voice by turning this on in
 VoiceOver settings.
 Hope this helps.

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-26 Thread Cheryl Homiak
The reason I don't want to just keep the Samantha as default and pull up the
Australian voice in the rotor is that I then have to use the compact Australian
voice which has what sounds to me like some kind of hiss or white noise each
time the voice starts and stops. The hq Australian voice, on the other hand,
sounds very clear and crisp to me. But I realize that voice preference is a
highly individual thing. I really tried to ignore my iritation with the compact
Australian voice but that bothered me about as much as Samantha does for other
reasons. I'm happy with my switch and that is actually the bottom line for how
each of us sets up a device.

The problem is that each HQ voice is a couple hundred MB. If a person is
running an 8 GB iOS device, the memory would fill up with just the HQ voices
very quickly.

It would be nice if Apple would allow us to select multiple voices, but this
is not the case currently.

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-26 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Yes, you can use Karen. But you have to go into settings general
international rformat region and choose Australia there. Then if you want the
hq voice rather than the compact voice, you will have to be patient because it
doesn't download the hq voice right away apparently. I ended up resetting my
phone but it sounds like if you just give it time and maybe even lock the
screen and put it on your charger for a while, the hq voice should eventually
download. I haven't had any issues with having Australia chosen in Format
Region except that siri has given me a couple of pieces of data in kilometers.
But somebody said weather was in Celcius; that hasn't happened to me however.
Just keep in mind that if you switch back the hq Samantha has tao download
again so you have to wait for that to happen. Personally I plan to stick with
Karen unless I uncover a major problem caused by using her.

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-26 Thread Wayne Merritt
I just read the last 2 messages in this thread, so pardon me if I
cover something already mentioned. If people like karen so much, why
not just add her to the Language Rodar in VO settings, and then switch
to her whenever you like?

Jmt,
Wayne

The problem is that each HQ voice is a couple hundred MB. If a person is
running an 8 GB iOS device, the memory would fill up with just the HQ
 voices
 very quickly.

It would be nice if Apple would allow us to select multiple voices, but
 this
 is not the case currently.

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-26 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Because just choosing the Australian voice in the rotor only gives the compact
voice which, at lleast to my ears, has a hissing or white noise sound as she
starts or stops speaking. The only way to get the hq voice is to make it the
default so that the Australian hq voice replaces the hq voice for your former
default.

international settings and having to download the HQ version of karen,
and then perhaps having to get the HQ version of the US voice again? I
suppose to each their own, but it seems easier to me to add Karen to
the language rodar and then I can have a choice of when I want to use

But you have to go into settings general

the hq voice rather than the compact voice, you will have to be patient
because it doesn't download the hq voice right away apparently. I ended up
resetting my phone but it sounds like if you just give it time and maybe
even lock the screen and put it on your charger for a while, the hq voice
should eventually download. I haven't had any issues with having Australia
chosen in Format Region except that siri has given me a couple of pieces of
data in kilometers. But somebody said weather was in Celcius; that hasn't
happened to me however. Just keep in mind that if you switch back the hq
Samantha has tao download again so you have to wait for that to happen.
Personally I plan to stick with Karen unless I uncover a major problem
 caused by using her.

Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-25 Thread Victor Marques
I am in Canada and use the Australian voice as the default. I find
this voice to be far superior in quality to the standard voice and is
so much easier to listen to. For this to work properly you need to
change your regional setting. Go to settings, general, international,
region format and set to Australia. The voice automatically changes to
Australian English as default when this is selected. In about ten
minutes the HQ voice will appear and you can then decide to use it or
the compact voice by turning this on in VoiceOver settings.
Hope this helps.

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-25 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Actually, there are three different places where you can change in
International. One is language, where there unfortunately isn't an option for
Australian English. Another is voice control, and there you can change either
for Siri or just for phone dialing. Finally, there's the one for format and
that's the one i am trying. It does change the default voice. I hope i'll be
able to tell the difference if it has downloaded the hq voice. My only problem
with the Australian voice is that there's a slight but very annoying hiss or
interference sound as the voice starts and stops speaking a word or phrase. I'm
hoping this is only in the compact voice since I really like the Australian
voice better than either the compact or hq Samantha which I tolerate but will
never love (apologies to those who like Samantha).

Re: Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-25 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I am running the Australian hq voice and it does pretty much eliminate the hiss
I had in her compact voice. But I didn't seem to get the hq voice until I reset
my iPhone even though I waited a while and tried turning compact voice on and
off first. But don't do this unless you have access to iTunes because I can
confirm that if you reset you won't be able to turn on voiceover by yourself
even if you try tripple click home! I knew the problem wasn't a sound problem
or that the phone wasn't on because my time chime apps that I have set up were
going off and announcing the time. Unless there are unforseen problems, I'm
staying with the Australian voice. Now i don't even need the language rotor
unless i decide to experiment with having it talk Spanish.

I live in the U.S. also. Did you change your region by using the region
format setting? I suppose it could be a difference between iPhone and iPod
but I wouldn't think so.

Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-25 Thread Victor Marques
Hi all,
I am using an ipod 4g so Siri differences in the region settings are
not important to me. In fact, having my settings in metric is what I
prefer anyway.
I hope this is something that can be fixed in a future update,
allowing more choice of voices and even hopefully more than one choice
per region.

The problem is that each HQ voice is a couple hundred MB. If a person is
running an 8 GB iOS device, the memory would fill up with just the HQ voices
very quickly.

It would be nice if Apple would allow us to select multiple voices, but this is
not the case currently.

Well, yes, this is quite true. Fortunately I have a 16gb device which is never
near full. So in my case having U.S. English and Australian English hq both
downloaded is not a problem but people should be mindful of the size.

there's a way to delete one hq voice file when you download another one.
Probably not.

Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Allison,

You know, this is something I also noticed when I was typing up my
instructions and have been meaning to ask. For me also Australian English is
not an option in Settings, General, International and Voice. I have
been meaning to post this and hopefully maybe some of our friends down under
like David, Jonathan or Garth could chime in with an explanation.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard.
I followed your instructions, but after I pressed the first language
button, I was unable to select Australian English. The only English options
I was given were English and British English. I'm really interested in using
the full Australian voice as my default.

Hi Sieghard, Thanks for that info. I have changed those settings and
when I did it the phone went quiet and wouldn't do anything for a bit
and then British English came back on. I changed it in the rotor back
to US and hope it will stay that way. Though it still seems to
indicate that my default is British English even though I have said
just English like you said. I guess it doesn't take much effort to
change it if it changes itsself back since it's in my rotor, just it never
did that before so it's slightly irritating.

 Hi Kirsten,

You can change the voice under Internationals and keep the date
format you prefer. In International you can change the following
 settings independently from each other:

Language: this is the default language used by Voiceover Voice
Control: this is the language you set for SIRI or stand-along voice
 dialing
Keyboards: here you can select multiple keyboards and order them in
the same way you can order the voices in the language rotor. I just
use the main English keyboard and the Emoji keyboard to have easy
access to emoticons. By the way, just noticed you can delete items
here by flicking down, i.e. the new actions rotor works here.
Region Format: Here you can select your country and this determines
how your date and time is formatted/displayed. If you change this and
then flick past the Calendar setting you find a region Format
Example which displays how the date, time and phone numbers are
 formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I
use the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and
the region format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much
 the same
 as US.
However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see
why you can't select English as the language instead of British
English, then set SIRI to English UK to make she understands your
limy accent *smile* and the region format to United Kingdom.

 Hope that helps,
 Sieghard
