I apologize for the cross-post but I know there are quite a few people on

Yes, the 6+ is HUGE and THIN! Well, not really huge, I suppose, but huge in
comparison with my 5 and 5S. I think it will be okay. It will give me a
better opportunity to find things on the screen. Since I carry a fanny-pack
around all the time with both phones and an assortment of those little
Motorola hx550 bluetooth earphones and whatever else I may need, the size
shouldn't be an issue for me. But honestly, I think those with pockets may
want to look for a different carrying alternative, especially if your 5 or
5S fit perfectly but with not much room to spare. It's also definitely
thinner and, one thing I hadn't known, the power button is placed
differently. If I'm identifying correctly (it's still restoring from my
iPhone 5 backup and syncing so I haven't locked/unlocked yet), the power
button is not on the top right corner any more. Instead it is down the side
a bit, the opposite side from the mute switch and volume buttons. It
definitely has a different footprint from the 5 and 5S and most certainly
from the 4S, but I think I will like it very much once I get used to it. I
don't think the increased size makes it clunky; it still feels pretty to me.

I don't use a bluetooth keyboard or display, and I have no major problems. Yes,
VO crashes more, and sometimes Siri won't work quite right. I'm willing to put
up with those problems, though, to get the braille input, interactive

Doing as David suggests is probably best, but it might also be the case
that your voice was turned off. Try a three finger double tap to toggle
  the voice on and off.

Also, if you have the home button set as your VoiceOver short cut, try a
triple tap of the home button. Recycling VoiceOver helps me in similar
situations. Maybe you can use Siri to turn VoiceOver off and then back
  on as well.

I've seen a couple of posts now to where IOS 8 with it's VoiceOver bugs
is compared to blindness specific products or older smart phone
technologies, like Windows Mobile running Mobile Accessibility. IMHO,
one of the great things about Apple and their commitment to making their
main stream products accessible is that we get treated the same as the
rest of their main stream customers. I fear that if we lower the bar
with our expectations then we're no better off then when we use those so
called blind ghetto products that so many people are quick to thumb
their noses at. Let's give Apple credit where credit is due, but let's
just not roll over like blind Uncle Tom's being happy with whatever
accessibility Apple thinks we'll be content with.

happens.

surroundings can affect the accuracy. You should never rely solely on any
GPS for mobility, although it is a great tool as an addition to your own
mobility skills. On a regular basis, I use Navigon, or the Seeing Eye app,
and am starting to use the Maps app that is built into the iPhone 5.

Subject: Maps - Location Off

Hi all,

I'm a new IPhone user have a 5s. I've been playing around with maps an
noticed my location is always slightly off where I really am. At home maps
has me in the address next door for instance. This isn't even consistent as
once, maps had me several addresses down the street. I have tried a couple
of other locations too maps is always slightly off. Is this normal? And
if one were to use maps to get anywhere, would you end up a door or two down
from where you really wanted to go? At this point, I would not have any
confidence in using maps. Do others use it or does everyone just get one of
the better gps apps? Thanks.

Regards,
Sherry Wells

That's all I know. Hope it's nothing. Keep your ears to the ground.

Everyone else thinks you would be frivolous to upgrade. The key is, and you
probably already know it, is that everyone else do not use the phone for the
purposes that you do. The KNFB reader will possibly be a major function of the
phone, and you need the better phone to use what you have bought to it's
fullest potential. If I were you, and if I have the money, I would go ahead
and upgrade.

I guess we’ll hear more about it if there is a real issue. My first response
here is that just from being in a shirt pocket the iPhone won’t bend. Give it a
hard enough impact and it will probably bend. I am actually speaking from my
own experience since I bent my 5S this summer. I had it in the back pocket of a
pair of shorts when I took my dog for a walk to the river. I stepped on a rock
which rolled out from under my foot and I was on a fairly steep downhill slope
so I just sort of fell down on my behind on about fist-size rocks. Since the
iPhone was in my back pocket I sat on it and at first it seemed OK, once I got
home I noticed a gap between the touch screen and the top edge of the stainless
steel frame big enough to stick a dime through. The phone was working fine and
a few weeks later when I was in Vancouver I took it to an Apple Store and since
I had bought Apple Care which covers 2 accidental damages, I was able to have
it replaced with a new phone for a $79 fee, I guess you can call it a
deductible since I see Apple Care as an insurance.

My nephew whose parents (my brother and his wife) have a cattle ranch got
knocked against a fence post by an unfriendly cow and he bent his iPhone 5.
It’s a minor bent and his phone has been working like that for over a year.

I think one would have to know the “rest of the story” as Paul Harvey used to
say to see why the iPhone 6 Plus in question got bent. For all I know somebody
is just trying to give Apple a bad name (again) with such a story, but I guess
we’ll find out if this is a real issue or a manufactured one.

Today's developments have ended what patience I had left with Apple. The

 a debacle.
I am grateful, and thankful, for my Apple products, but I also paid decent

just a matter of consumer law and good faith.
Apple is one of the world's wealthiest companies, with sufficient money to

So, you don't find all that extra tapping to be kind of a pain in the backside?
I guess that's good. It does seem rather inefficient. Not that they have a
choice. I don't have a better suggestion, except for perhaps they might
consider making another phone the size of the fives when the 5S is no longer in
production. Fat chance though, I suppose.

One way Apple could better test its products

2014-09-24 Thread Neal Ewers
Perhaps Apple employees should have to spend a day with blindfolds on using
VoiceOver. I don't mean that sarcastically, but I do remember when Microsoft
touted Internet Explorer as being able to be operated totally with keyboard
shortcuts without touching the mouse. I know, it's not the same thing, but I
think people who want to develop products for people with differing abilities
should, perhaps, have to walk a while in their shoes. Obviously, there are
other disabilities as well, so it would mean a lot of pairs of shoes, but I bet
it would work better for everyone as a result.

2014-09-24 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, I did not write that message in response to any previous messages about
8.1 or 8.0. Just thought it would be a good idea. And yes, you're right
about the accessibility team. But I bet there are people at Apple who have
no clue what it is like to use their products as a person with a disability.
I think Of course, they will never know, in that they can always take off
their blindfolds or take out the ear plugs or take off the tented glasses.
But who knows, they may learn something along side the accessibility team.
Myself, I'd give a lot to know what it is like to operate the iPhone as a
sighted person. Smile.

I think that a good source of information on testing would be the people who

handicapped. I'm thinking that they would have a better feel for our

Hi all,

I'm still using my iPhone 5 and still running ios 7.12. I will not update to
ios 8 do to all the major bugs in ios 8. I will wait until the bugs in ios 8
are fixed and the next update will come out. Hopefully by then all the major
bugs in ios 8 won't be in ios 8.1.

I would need help activating a shipped phone and getting the two I have

Re: Bending iphones?

2014-09-24 Thread Charles Rivard
I've never been in an auto accident, but that won't stop me from wearing a seat
belt. Same goes for a motor cycle helmet when 4-wheeling or dirt biking
through the desert near the Colorado river. Same for getting my iPhone into a
case. Common sense tells me that protection may be needed, and if I don't get
it, I might wish that I had done so later. But, then would be too late. I'm
not forcing anyone to do what I think is best, but common sense tells me what
to do.

To each his/her own! I don't try to tell people who want cases that they are
sissies for not having one or that they are being over-protective, because I
don't think that; I think they believe they are making what is a wise decision
for them. Those of us who choose to go caseless, especially those who have gone
caseless since the 3gs, know the risks and responsibilities and have made what
we feel is the best decision for us. To discuss the pros and cons is healthy
and good, but let's not push people to do what we do in this area no matter how
strongly we feel about it for ourselves.

it that way: if it says top and right edge is visible, that means in order
to also get the bottom edge you have to move down a bit. If you have the
page in front of you in portrait mode that would mean closer to you. It also
says the right edge is visible so you also have to move a bit to the left.
If you do this and it now says top and left edge is visible you moved to far
left but still not far enough down. If it suddenly says bottom and left is
visible you moved too far down and too far left. I hope this makes sense to

However, VoiceOver crashes all the time on my 4s.
I have not found a pattern to all the crashes.
The good thing is that VO at least restarts when it decide to die on me.
But it crashes at least 10-15 times a day and I know when it crashed VO is
on, screen curtain on etc is announced.
I have done a reset - reset to factory settings but still the same.

Doing as David suggests is probably best, but it might also be the case that
your voice was turned off. Try a three finger double tap to toggle the voice
on and off.

Also, if you have the home button set as your VoiceOver short cut, try a
triple tap of the home button. Recycling VoiceOver helps me in similar
situations. Maybe you can use Siri to turn VoiceOver off and then back on as
well.

I've seen a couple of posts now to where IOS 8 with it's VoiceOver bugs is
compared to blindness specific products or older smart phone technologies,
like Windows Mobile running Mobile Accessibility. IMHO, one of the great
things about Apple and their commitment to making their main stream products
accessible is that we get treated the same as the rest of their main stream
customers. I fear that if we lower the bar with our expectations then we're
no better off then when we use those so called blind ghetto products that so
many people are quick to thumb their noses at. Let's give Apple credit where
credit is due, but let's just not roll over like blind Uncle Tom's being
happy with whatever accessibility Apple thinks we'll be content with.

Apple's history is to take one-three months. Let's see what happens.

Re: Creating ringtones from songs with iTunes

Hello,

I have been trying to put ringtones on my IPhone for about a week now.
I’ve tried the instruction in an e-mail and I can’t figure out a couple of
things.
First: When I get to the part about creating an AAC version, those settings
are unavailable to me.
Second, I’ve also tried creating the ringtones using goldwav and making sure
that I use the M4R extension to no avail.
I know I must be doing something wrong or missed a step somewhere.
Thanks!

C. I just wait awhile longer.

I really appreciate any feedback on this.

Thank You,

I wouldn't go so far as saying it's a piece of crap, but what does concern me
has been a recent pattern of poor quality assurance. Some problems with iOS 7
were fixed, and some we just learn to live with. Apple has the appearance of a
company that is pushing things out the door entirely too quickly. When one does
that, there are always consequences. I am watching what's going on, and waiting
the moment before I update to iOS8.

I think that Apple is trying so hard to satisfy the people who are impatient
that they are cranking out the updates too fast and don't have time to
properly check them. Having seen what has happened last year and this year
also, I still think that they feel that timing to put out the new product is
more important than coming out with the right thing from the get go. They
set themselves a deadline and go crazy trying to stick to it and the result
is what we get.

I guess they have evaluated that their reputation can stand the problems and
they seem to be right. No matter how many bugs there are, people seem to
forgive Apple for putting out a product before it is ready. When people
camp out on the sidewalk for two days to be the first to get the new
product, I guess you don't have to worry about several dozen bugs.

2014-09-24 Thread Neal Ewers
This is not a complaint, just an observation.

I know lots of companies that tie the release of their next version to a
particular time of year, and if it's not ready, well it just may go out
anyway. I'm guessing that there are a lot of mid level workers at apple who
likely knew this was not ready for prime time but the choice may have been
made for them by the higher ups. Those mid-level workers may be just as
frustrated as we are. After all, many of them use iOS 8 also. I just hope
the managers who set the time for this release didn't let so many bugs in
the house that it will be a very long process to kill them all.

Doing as David suggests is probably best, but it might also be the
case that your voice was turned off. Try a three finger double tap
to toggle the voice on and off.

Also, if you have the home button set as your VoiceOver short cut,
try a triple tap of the home button. Recycling VoiceOver helps me in
