Re: ios8 braille input question

Facebook - good news - annoying bug disappeared
Hey folks We all knew that there was an annoying fb bug on the fb app in which you could not react on so called indirect statusses or threads. I.e. like person x reacted on his or her photo or status. Doubletapping did not work and would only select the thread not going into it, so reacting was not possible at all. On the other hand, doubletapping with 2 fingers was no solution, the only things you could have done was hiding the thread or unfollow that profile involved. Last night I updated all my current apps and now I notice that whatever kind of thread or announcement is made in the app on our walls, just double tap and even indirect thread reactions can be read and even reacted on. The only kind of small bug that stays is the announcement: VO tells you to doubletap with 2 fingers to react on the thread but this is not true because then you get the hide or unfollow menu. The only thing that still disturbs me is the fact that messages of the fb app are announced but no longer read in the locked notification screen. But that has been going on for a mont now or so. But I'm glad with the disappearing of this tramendous bug. Regards Davy Davy -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: IOS 8 and the iPod Touch 5
I've somehow escaped that bug. I'm told a workaround is to find the last site in history. I do have the Voiceover switching on and off thing to a distracting level, and sometimes my iPod gets quite warm with lots of this activity. I try now to catch it early and delete the last app I had in the switcher and it usually goes away. I think I'll try deleting everything from the app switcher and see if that helps. I plan to purchase the KNFB reader soon. Previous purchases have been made on an iTunes gift card which now has a negligible balance which is perhaps $12.00. Re: Clarification On How the iOS Upgrade Process Works Automatically?
Hi there. Eventually you will get a notification on your screen that says that there is a new upgrade for your phone. The settings app will show a badge icon number of one. This means there is one item for you to review. Typically this is an upgrade. From that point on you compress in general and then in software update. When you go to software upgrade you will see that there is an upgrade and it will either show that the upgrade has been downloaded or that it is simply available. Usually the download if you have room in your device will take place when your device is locked, connected to Wi-Fi, and connected to power while charging. I believe this is similar to when iCloud backups are performed. The one thing that you cannot do is accidentally upgrade. This means that you would actually have to go into the software upgrade section and choose to install or download the upgrade. Then you would need to agree to the license terms. Then you would need to confirm that you are agreeing by double tapping agree a second time. Like I said, definitely no upgrading by accident. Re: Clarification On How the iOS Upgrade Process Works Automatically?
I'd just leave it to creep in on it's own, it'll get there soon enough. You check settings/general/software update periodically and it'll show up, and include an install button. You have to have a minimum amount of battery left or be on AC power before it will install as failing battery part way through would brick the device. Ok, you might get it back via iTunes and all that jazz. Mine is still saying 8.0.2, so can leave it a while yet. Re: Delivery Status Touch App question
Hi, for security reasons I myself like having all of the detailed updates so I do miss them. Glad it isn’t just me (smile). It did update when I manually opened it this morning but push notifications seem to be dead by me entirely. Thankfully Parcel is still humming along nicely. I sure would love to know what became of the iOS version of ShipRack but sadly its maker seems unwilling to respond to inquiries via twitter or email. Though they still reference iOS on their site the app sure doesn’t exist in the US store any more. It’s been fun comparing different apps though. thanks as always for your help. Robin From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, October 19, 2014 10:39 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Delivery Status Touch App question Hi Robin, I have been using this app for some time now and somehow I believe notifications aren’t working that well so the developer works around that with a notification to open the app from time to time so it updates the shipments you have entered. It’s definitely not the greatest when it comes to providing notifications, but I found that I actually now prefer not to get a notification every time a shipment arrives or departs somewhere and what I really like about this app is the fact that if I put the tracking number on the clipboard and then open the app it automatically detects the tracking number and usually correctly identifies the carrier. The app then asks if you want to create a new shipment and all I have to do is say Yes, enter an optional description for the shipment and then tap on Save. If I expect a shipment I just find it easier to open the app at my convenience to check if the delivery is on time and so on. While it’s push notifications are nice they don’t seem quite as timely as those of the Parcel app. But my question to others who might use the delivery status touch app is this. Why does it pop up a notification once daily telling me to launch the app so it can update itself? Is there a reason it can’t just do that without launching as it is enabled in background refresh apps in settings? Are there other package tracking apps besides Delivery Status Touch and Parcel that have working push notifications? I know Posted boasts of having them but it’s never delivered even one to me. RE: Question re app store purchases
Hi Donald, Yes, that is how it works. Any gift card balance is used up and the rest goes to the credit card on file. I would maybe check around with places like Target, Best Buy, 7 Eleven and so on to see if they have any deals on gift cards. Last year 7 Eleven here in Canada ran a promotion where you could buy a $50 gift card for $40, so a 20% discount. I bought 3 of them at the time and I had about $54 left, then just before the KNFB Reader app was released 7 Eleven had another promotion, this time only 10% off so I bought another $50 card for $45 and when I average it all out I ended up paying about $85 or so for the app. Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Donald L. Re: Clarification On How the iOS Upgrade Process Works Automatically?
Thanks, Raul. I was clear on no accidental upgrades. I just wanted to know what to expect, and I also didn't want to babysit it during the day as the download took 5 hours last time. :) Most likely it'll be a smaller download for this update, but thought I'd give this method a try. New Skype on iPhone 6
Hi, I got a call from someone today who is using the newest version of skype on her iPhone 6. She was using the internal microphone of the iPhone, but I could hardly hear her. She changed from speaker phone on and off and it made no difference. If she talked right into the phone, it sounded OK, so it would appear that it works on hand set when the speaker phone is off, but speaker phone with the phone hanging around her neck could hardly be heard. Is there any kind of adjustment for volume in settings? I don't have the new OS, so I don't know the answer to that. Has anyone else had this problem? RE: Facebook - good news - annoying bug disappeared
Can you activate a link or video yet? I've not been able to do this since the ios 8 update. Used to be able to double tap and hold and the link would launch or video would play. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Davy Cuppens Sent: Monday, October 20, 2014 10:06 AM To: viphone Subject: Facebook - good news - annoying bug disappeared Hey folks We all knew that there was an annoying fb bug on the fb app in which you could not react on so called indirect statusses or threads. I.e. like person x reacted on his or her photo or status. Re: Facebook - good news - annoying bug disappeared
Hey Jim Informertimes sometimes I managed to open a video and sometimes not, difficult to reproduce. I don't have any threads with videos at this moment but from the moment I have one, I'll test and respnd here. Please be aware that I am still running ios 7.12 and I want 3 bugs to be solved in general: 1. the caller id (not solved) 2. the virtual versus vo focus bug (don't have any info at this point) and last but not least 3. the notification bug because I really like the facts to have my weather apps and sports and newspaper updates to be listened on the locked notification screen. Regards Davy -Oorspronkelijk bericht- From: Jim Ruby Sent: Monday, October 20, 2014 8:36 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Facebook - good news - annoying bug disappeared Can you activate a link or video yet? A Tip On Using the Bard Mobile Search Field and Related Issues
Hi, all, I just tried using the Bard Mobile search field, knowing that there have been problems in iOS8 with Voiceover tracking the visual screen. The search field works, but not if you swipe left and right. Swiping changes what Voiceover reads, but doesn't always change the visual screen. So I used the three-finger swipe to change to page two once I'd double-tapped the Browse Bard control. Tapping *directly *on the search button activates the edit field and allows you to enter text. At least, this is how it has worked for me. Hope it helps, Teresa We can see with the eyes, but we see with the brain as well, and seeing with the brain is often called imagination.--Oliver Sacks -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Cooking thermometers.
John, Yes, they can be used in the oven as long as you can route the probe wire outside the oven. The actual iGrill unit cannot withstand temperatures inside the oven, but the probes can. I see that there are three choices apparently now from iDevices--the iGrill 2, a Mini iGrill, and the iDevices kitchen thermometer. They all appear to function on the same principle. If you have any doubts or concerns, you could always try the MiniGrill. When I'm grilling, I often use just one probe on my iGrill. The only time I use two probes is if I'm doing something large and thicker, like smoking a ham or grilling prime rib. The mini only has the capability to use one probe. I think the Mini also uses a coin-cell battery which to me is a bit more of a disadvantage. I have seen some of the negative reviews on Amazon. I think a lot of them have to do with the quality of the probes particularly on the Kitchen Thermometer. I will say that I rather doubt the 150-foot claim for the bluetooth range, although I have had no drop-outs in my experience, although I don't have a huge lot and the grill is only about fifteen feet from the back door. But, I have been at the other end of the house, and the range is definitely longer than the standard 10 meters for normal bluetooth. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Re: Mid 2013 MacBook air for sale good condition
Hmmm, now that upgrades are free, or at least have been for the last couple of them, is it legal to sell a Mac, according to Apple, with the current OS even if it came installed with an earlier one. I'm asking because I'm sending one to Gazelle and Gazelle doesn't say anything about reinstalling the original OS but I was thinking I should do that. Maybe it never was illegal before; that was just my impression. But now that the upgrades are not paid, maybe it's a non-issue? -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. RE: [Bulk] Another iTunes 12 discovery
I'm so glad you mentioned that you have to shift-tab to correlate the correct button with the item name or I would have been very frustrated. What is the difference between 'my music' and 'music'? Thanks. From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, October 19, 2014 3:35 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: [Bulk] Another iTunes 12 discovery Hekllo again, So, one other thing I discovered. You have these radio buttons for Music, Movies, tV Shows, More etc. If you go to more where you find a lot of the other stuff like Apps, Books, Tones and so on there is an Edit button. If you tab to it and activate it and then tab again, you will find checkboxes and the other items. If you check some of the checkboxes which are not checked (each checkbox for an item is before the item is announced) then the item will be listed as a radio button in that main view. For example, if you want Apps to be a radio button in the main icon list where you have Music, Movies and More, just activate the Edit button, then tab until you hear Apps. Now Shift+Tab once to the checkbox before Apps and check it. Now Apps will be in your main list. Similarly you can of course uncheck items you don't want and hide them. If you don't have TV Shows and it's in that series of radio buttons, then just go to More, tab to the Edit button and activate it. Now tab until you hear TV Shows, Shift+Tab once, uncheck the box and it will be gone. Also, as Christopher pointed out, the column browser shortcut key apparently still works, but I believe just as in iTunes 11 you have to select Songs otherwise the column browser won't work. OK, I now officially like iTunes 12. Regards, Sieghard -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Maybe that’s a wrong assumption because I don’t think you specified this. Here is what you do. Make sure the music radio button is selected or do cmd-1 to have it selected. If you are seeing albums, then this probably is okay. Also make sure the “my Music” radio button is selected. This is another set of radio buttons. You will then find a pop-up further to the right and I would think albums is what you are on since you are seeing albums. Do vo-space to open the popup. However, this is more like a table in a pop-up so don’t vo-arrow down. Instead just arrow to what you want. Songs should be arrowing up once if it says something like “row 2 albums” when you open the popup. It seems that when I open the popup it always shows “row 2 albums” for me no matter what the popup is on before I open it but I don’Tt know if this is a default or has something to do with how I have it set up. Then don’t do vo-space to close the popup; hit return instead. At least this is what works for me. I think this works whether or not you are having the column browser show or not. Sometimes you have to vo-right-arrow through the window a couple of times to get your bearings of where things are. If you can’t find something I’m talking about, post again and I’l give it another try. If I have something in my view or sorting different from yours, it could cause confusion in trying to explain it. Re: How to Upgrade
Backing up before you update is not required, but it is definitely very highly recommended. If there is a problem with your update process and you don't backup, you don't have a prior working version to go back to, which is why you want to backup before you update. You can either backup with iTunes or iCloud. You can update over the air or when connected to your PC or Mac with iTunes. I will leave the detailed steps of upgrading to someone else. Before you update, it is a good idea to close all currently running apps in your App Switcher, and even to reboot your phone so you can start fresh. It may seem like you are going to a lot of steps before you update, but remember, you do these steps so that if problems happen you can resolve them without too much effort. Re: iOS 8.1 and braille input
The sluggish Braille input has been happening ever since 8.0. I have just switched automatic translation off and use dots 4-5 chord to translate each paragraph or before each hard return. I also use dots 8-chord for a carriage return, though this might be problematic if you use eight-dot input. Re: IOS 8.1: Safari and the Back Button
I am still running 7.1.2, so I can't test my theory. When I listened to a podcast demonstration of this back button issue, I wondered if the following might work. When you hit the back button and the resulting page is not readable, I understand that it is a VoiceOver issue, it is readable on the screen. So, what happens if you turn VoiceOver off, then back on. Is it readable? Or, what happens if you close Safari without closing the unreadable page, then reopen Safari. It should open on the page that VoiceOver wouldn't read. Is it readable now? I admit that either of these solutions are way more trouble than they should be, but if it makes it readable, until they fix it, maybe it is the only way. Re: Facebook - good news - annoying bug disappeared
Hello list, talking about Facebook, I have the following issue: I have been using Facebook for Iphone. When I open manage feeds and click on the pages, I get the list of pages I have liked. However, when there is a new page I have liked today for example, this page is not listed in the manage feeds section. On the other hand, when I unlike a page, this page is stil in manage feeds section. Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Thank you very much for your help in advance. I.e. like person x reacted on his or her photo or status. Re: IOS 8.1: Safari and the Back Button
A clarification to my theory. When I say close Safari, I mean close it with the home button. When you reopen it, it should go back to the page it was on when you closed it. I do not mean to hit the pages button in the bottom right corner of the screen, and close that page first. Just hit the home button, then reopen Safari to see if it will read it then. Re: still have bug with moving apps
My feeling is that the problem with moving apps is because of the software being made more for the larger screens. I even think I read that somewhere, but I can't remember where.
