Telstra Wireless is a pain in the butt. Nobody I've heard of with a
Mac has
had any success getting it set up. If you must use Telstra Cable
just get

the standard Cable Modem Telstra supplies. They sent me a new Motorola
SB5101l-AU Surfboard Cable Modem a few weeks ago in preparation for
their
speed boosts as of March to 17MB/sec down 256K/sec up speeds. Use a
3rd
party Wireless/Router such as a Netgear WG614 or similar that can
handle
wired or wireless clients. It will work out cheaper and be far
superior.

If you can get other options other than Telstra consider that also
especially if you can get ADSL2+. Telstra is extremely Mac
unfriendly and

just about every ISP provides more value for your money.

I haven't had success with the self install yet. I got the SB5101l-AU
Surfboard Cable Modem yesterday but it won't work with the Linksys
Wireless G router that I was using before.

Re support, when I got through I was passed to someone who then
passed me to someone who was a Mac 'specialist' but they won't help
you if you have a '3rd party' wireless router.

So darned if you do and darned if you don't.

BTW, she *did* get me running after a while with a direct ethernet
connection but, hey, everything was working fine until they sent me
the new cable modem. And I'm kinda used to wireless now. And she was
polite :-)

They're not cheap. For the same money ($60/mth) my restaurant manager
is getting 12Mbit speeds and a 20Gb download limit (Telstra - 10Gb)
with Amnet.

Looks like it could be time to switch, although maybe my wireless
router needs to be magically reconfigured to talk to this new modem.
Who knows? I'm considering Highway1 and Westnet who have good
reputations.

RE: telstra bigpond cable

2006-02-22 Thread Hugh Griffiths
I guess in my case its partly voodoo economics, as I have two mobiles
and landline through telstra, plus my big pond dial up, I get the
discount which gets applied to all services, effectively making my
current internet access ( 29 $ per month) free. Looking at the bigpond
website it appears that I can upgrade this to bigpond cable, and with
the 12 months half price and the free self installation I can go from
dial up to cable for effectively nothing for the first twelve months. I
had discounted adsl as I am on the Hammersly exchange and my
understanding is that adsl through this exchange is flakey at best, any
one else heard this?

The dilemma of what to do with old Macs is a problem here too. I can't bear
to toss 'em out because I remember how much they originally cost. But I
have gradually come to the realisation that is what I might have to do.

But I have been cleaning out the garage this week and would like to offer
the following freebies:

I have four cardboard boxes of bicycle parts. These are left over from a
few years ago when I restored a great number of old bikes for middle eastern
boat people. Someone with a recycling ethos might still like them. (Free,
free, free!) If not they will have to go to the tip soon.

Also a wooden artist's easel. Any wooden artist can have it for free.

We're running a VoIP business for residential customers and have come across
Bigpond cable a number of times and the trouble customers have plugging our
phone adapter in. What we have found is that Bigpond cable only supports a
single device - either the Ethernet port or USB, not simultaneously. The
cable modem usually supports simultaneous connections but Bigpond doesn't.

So, we are advising our customers to buy broadband routers if they want to
connect more than one device. You can buy these with wireless integrated.
We have had good experiences with Linksys and Netgear - Belkin and Dlink are
OK. Even an Apple Airport Express would do the job (I think they have a WAN
and a LAN port) but you would need a switch to provide more than one
Ethernet port.

A good source of support is www.whirlpool.net.au - there are numerous
Bigpond cable support forums (fora?).

Good luck

Ports and the internet

2006-02-22 Thread James Anderson

hi,

I have my G4 400mhz Powerbook dialled up to the net via the 56k modem
AND the network cable plugged into a LAN (with net).
Can I use both connections at once? Currently the dialup connection
prevails and thus I get slow net, however I need to use some ports
which are blocked on the LAN. THe internet ports are not blocked on
the LAN, thus I would prefer to use the net from this connection.

I hope that makes sense - I basically want to ensure all port 81
communications goes through the ethernet and not the dialup, then I
can be fast for surfing the web but also have all ports available
(albeit some slow).

Cheers,
James

Identified, in the sense that it's a proof of concept worm with a
release that gives every appearance of having been deliberately timed
for maximum FUD.

Is it just me (as a single user on large suburban block, not a sysadmin

Yeah, I'm rushing out to buy AV tomorrow.

Hi folks,
we're trying to connect with a video chat to Los Angeles (our Son
is a muso/actor there) we keep being told after 'accepting' the
invitation that WE, this end failed to accept, while Geoff at the
other end is told that 'he failed to accept'??
Have limited the bandwidth in 'Prefs' but can't seem to get it
happening?!

Has anybody any ideas on this?

Thanks IA,

Ken jackson

Re: Ports and the internet

2006-02-22 Thread James Devenish
Hi James,

What OS are you using?

Yes, you can use multiple connections at the same time. But, as you
have noted, one connection will prevail when you make connections out
from your computer to other computers. Internet (IP) protocol knows
about addresses but not ports, so unfortunately it is not
blindingly simple to have port 80 use a different primary interface
from your other TCP and UDP traffic (I assume you meant 80, not 81).

Fortunately, there is wide support for web proxies. Does your ISP
for your LAN's Internet connection provide a web proxy (HTTP proxy)?
If so, set up a routing rule so your computer uses your LAN for the
proxy. Then, set up your Network Preferences to use that HTTP proxy.
All your web traffic should then be funnelled through your LAN to the
proxy. Everything else will go through your modem as usual. Or I am
just daydreaming.

In any case, the precise steps will depend on your OS.

No, it's not just you. I think it's another slow news day, and
something even vaguely dodgy on the Mac that can be beaten up into a
story makes for easy pickings for lazy journalists. Especially as the
anti-virus vendors will be happy to help talk it up. I could write a
program that erases your hard drive and mail it out to people and
tell them to run it and it would be about as effective.

Imagine if we got a news story for every piece of PC malware!

Have fun,
Shay (off to do something more productive with his Mac)
PS- Although the Bluetooth worm was spotted in the wild in Perth today :)
