Re: Telstra iPhone data usage

2010-10-04 Thread Adam Hewitt

I have two accounts setup on my phone and both are set to push and
receive a lot of email every day. I have never gone over 200MB of data
usage in the 18 months I have had the phone...making my 1GB of data
seem pointless.

 Hi Andrew

Do you have email set up?
If so, have you gone and changed the checking of it from Push to Manual.
If it's set to Push, then it's checking it all the time!!

 You can check in:-
 Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
I generally have Fetch New Data set to Off.
Then click on Fetch New Data. Change this to Manually.
Then click on Advanced. Then change each account to Manually.
This means email won't check, until you actually open up Mail to look at it.
This stops it from checking all the time, and can help with data usage.

Try that and see how it goes (if you're using Mail of course).
If not, ignore everything I said :O)

 Kind Regards
 Daniel

plan which I never exceeded in two years.

My data usage has been probably less than what I usually used on Optus as I
have frequently been accessing the net via WiFi.

Has anybody else experienced similar issues. I can't believe I've used that
 much data in 5 days.

I'll have to organise to spend a few hours tomorrow getting transferred from
one department to another at Telstra's friendly phone support service...

Not all modems are created equal and you may find the modem is causing
the problems and not the provider (saying that I did a lot of work
with voip over satellite which cannot be treated the same as over a

I have talked with their Tech people a number of times, but the adjustments

echoes to scratchy fading out volumes. The problems are inconsistent
sometimes there are echoes, sometimes other problems.

I am thinking of going back to Teltra landline where at least the quality

iPhone Email

2009-06-03 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

At least for the time being I have setup Mobile Me with push email,
contacts and calendar and it is all working quite well. I have all of
my gmail email forwarded to the @me.com address which pushes it to my
iPhone.

The problem is that I would really like to be able to get aural
notifications for any emails from our monitoring server 24 hours a day
(for when services or servers fail) and get notifications for my other
email only during the dayif any of that makes sense

Does anyone have any method for doing this? Gmail filters don't seem
to have a time of day option and neither does Mobile Me. The other
option is to setup my own Exchange server and configure everything I
want to do there, however it is slightly overkill just to get my
iPhone working the way I want.

Adam.

iphone and gmail

2009-05-23 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

I have had an iPhone for a while however I have been using a work
supplied SIM card which did not have a data plan attached to it so I
haven't really bothered with much of the 'mobile internet' side of it
apart from using wireless at home. Now I am about to start a new job
which doesn't supply a mobile plan and today I have got a new 16GB
iPhone on a plan ($69 plan with Vodafone for those interested with 1GB
of data) and I am giving my old iPhone to my wife.

Now I just did a search to figure out how to setup my gmail account to
push the emails to my iPhoneand discovered that it appears that
Google haven't setup this feature yet!! I was sure that this was
advertised as being available during one of the keynote speeches??

Apart from signing up with MobileMe (which I am going to find
difficult justifying to my wife after getting the new phone and plan)
how is everyone doing their push email? I have read about setting up a
ymail account and forwarding gmail email to that etc, but then I run
the risk of getting SPAM sent to the ymail account and getting
delivered to me whereas the gmail SPAM filtering is fantastic. I find
it really weird that they haven't set this up yet.

While I am at it, does anyone have any tips tricks that they can
share related to iphone/PIM/syncing/internet/etc for using with a data
plan? Now that I have one I would like to put it to good use(I
plan on getting iiQuota to manage my calls and data usage, plus I
already have the ToodleDo app for keeping track of my tasksany
other time management/project management tools would be useful as
well)

Could someone please tell me, does the 'push' email require you to
have Mail open to receive it? I thought you would get a new email
notification no matter what you are doing and then you would see the
unread email count on the Mail icon increase?

I have done a bunch of testing with a Yahoo account and it doesn't
seem to do anything until I actually open Mail...Seems stupid if this
is the case as I dont want to sit there with Mail open all day to know
I have received any emails.

Thanks Peter,

This isn't true. I have managed to get my Yahoo mail to push...for
some reason I needed to reset the iPhone and its working now as

As you say though, I can just set it to check every 15 minutes and
that way I wont have to put Yahoo into the mix. Hopefully Google will
get their act together shortly (or more importantly that Apple
implements IMAP-IDLED) so gmail will be push as well.

Thanks again.

Re: What Format to convert AVI files to to put on DVD

This may not help you, but most recent DVD players can play DivX

then you just need to burn them to a cd/dvd and put it in the player.

I do this with all of my video's at the moment (my xbox media centre

Re: MobileMe

2009-04-05 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi Daniel,

Please see my responses inline:

On Sun, Apr 5, 2009 at 4:07 PM, Daniel Forsdyke daniel.forsd...@mac.com wrote:

For me just having an email address that does not have to change regularly,
but looks a bit more professional than a 'yahoo' or 'hotmail' address is
worth it. Since getting my .mac email address the home email account address
has changed 3-4 times alone. The other advantage is the 'push' email to my
 iPhone.

For a *lot* less than a mobile me subscription, you could buy your own
domain (I recently got one for my brother-in-law for $7.95 per year)
and have the email for that domain hosted with Google for free. I am
currently doing this and it works fantastically.

I am currently utilising the 'iDisk' service extensively. I have my iDisk set
up on the laptop and the desktop so that I can use it offline, then syncs
when they go online. This means that I can access important documents from
the laptop, the desktop or online via the work computer, and always be
working on the same document instead of copies (once they sync). It also
means by default that they are backed-up in multiple locations.

Microsoft offer this service for free with 20GB of storage space.

Just this weekend I needed to scan a document and share it with about 6 other
people. But the size of the file meant I could not email it. So I uploaded
all the documents that I needed to distribute to iDisk, then 'shared' them
with the 6 people that needed access, by clicking on the share button to send
 an email with the link.

This can also be done with Microsoft's SkyDrive

Last month I took photos as some special events. One of the events had nearly
90 photos, so instead of emailing small batches of photos or burning CD's, I
set up a 'Web Gallery' using iPhoto and MobileMe - all set up in iPhoto.

Also can be done with Microsoft's SkyDrive for free.

Whilst I am using it daily, I am sure that I have not yet taken full
advantage of all the MobileMe services available. I also suspect that when
'iWork.com' finishes it's Beta phase that you will require a MobileMe account
to take full advantage. (I have only trialed iWork09, and have not had the
 chance to use 'iWork.com')

Mac integration and also multi-device syncronization of contacts and
calander items are probably the big two reasons to keep it, although
with some effort you could setup google calendar sharing and have the
google contacts sync'edbut I have found that to be pretty clunky
in the past.

I did some reading and the Macbook being sold has an Intel X1300
graphics card which is not supported, however all accounts are that it
works, just don't expect any kind of blistering speed. Depending on
how many things are going on in the area you can expect 15-30 frames
per second which is playablealthough playing with low graphics
detail in windowed mode at a lower resolution (1024x768) seem to
produce 30+ fps which is respectablebut then it depends on what is
expected.

Syncing todo lists with iphone

2009-01-05 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

I am looking for a solution for syncing my Outlook todo list with my
iphone. The best I have found so far seems to be the Toodledo client +
toodledo.com + the Toodledo Outlook sync application which syncs from
the website. The problem with this is that I want to sync my todo list
from my work Outlook to my iphone which has neither a wireless
connection or a data plan available...therefore syncing offline is
really the only option (unless I dont sync my iphone until I get home
and have both the office and home outlooks syncing with the website).

Does anyone have a better solution?

Kind regards,

Adam.

Hi Ronni,

Thanks for the info but this doesn't appear to be related. This was a
brand new install of iTunes and a copy of Outlook that has never been
used, so both are fresh and the latest versions.

Kind regards,

Adam.

I don't know whether this has anything to do with your particular problem.
Some or all calendar events from Outlook calendar may not sync to iPhone

From my understanding you pretty much have 3 options as far as the
service is concerned. Telstra, Optus and IPStar, anything over and
above those you move into commercial connections.

I would have a look at Westnet which sell IPStar under the the
Government Broadband Guarantee.

It might also help if you provide your current monthly costs, speeds
and download limits so that we can give you a better fit to your
current position.

Amcom sell Fibre services, Amnet sell ADSL. If you have a look at the

 1. If you Quit the Audacity application by going to the Menu bar - Audacity
 Quit Audacity
Then open Audacity again and click it's icon in the dock, you will see
the Invisible is NOT ticked, but Audacity IS ticked.

 2. If you just close the Audacity application by clicking the RED button,
then click on the icon in the Dock you will get your picture that only shows
 Invisible (which is ticked).

When you only close the application it becomes invisible (icon stays in the
dock) until you open it again.
By actually Quitting the application it completely Quits (icon stays in the
 dock).

Just closing the application makes it invisible.

Hope that clears it up for you.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

An example of where this is useful is with instant messaging
applications. You may not want the contact list to be visible in the
dock, but you do still want to remain connected to the service and
receive messages, in this case you would click on the red button, the
contact list will disappear and the IM program will run in the
background. When you want to quit the application you select quit from
the menu, when you want to minimize the contact list you click the
orange button.

Make sense?

The Telstra people were saying 200, but I don't think so.

It was quite amusing actually, the queue at the Apple store was longer at

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2008/07/official_telstra_iphone_3g_plans_mix_and_m
atch_but_still_poor_value.html

Of note, you can buy the phone outright from Telstra, though it will be
locked to Telstra. I put my PrePaid Telstra Next G SIM in and it worked
fine.

Oh and the only reason I went with Telstra is the coverage, as I go out to
York a bit and the signal drops down to EDGE there for Telstra as opposed to
GPRS for the other carriers.

Final word - it is an amazing piece of technology so it was worth the wait,
the cold, the Telstra systems that were down and their awful deals.

Chris.

How much are telstra selling it for outright?

Adam.

Has anyone on the list got the same software installed and working,
and if so, do you know whether there is a way of getting PC programs
to recognise the Mac's graphic card.

I have a game installed, which is compatible with the operating system

His bottom line, however, was that the company did not support the use

Im not sure about VMWare Fusion, but with VMWare Server and VMWare

Re: Windows for Intel Mac

2008-05-09 Thread Adam hewitt
One thing to keep in mind that no one seems to have mentioned yet is that
there are licensing issues running windows under virtual machines. As far as
I am aware only Vista Ultimate is licensed to be used inside a VM and using
any other version is the same as using a pirate copy. I am not so familiar
with the XP licensing however I would imagine that it's the same deal, ie.
Pro version only.

1. Which would be the better program to buy for use with

 Hi Rosie

Sounds like you've had some fun looking into it! :o)
VMWare will run any of the Windows software, so you shouldn't have any
problems with whatever you load on it. Obviously XP may be more suited
 for
what you want to do, as you're familiar with it, and know how it works.
 But
Vista will also run fine no problems. (well apart from Vista still have
 some
issues with drivers and extras). XP still does seem to be more
 popular for
 mainstream use.

Some of the reason you would be having trouble finding a copy, is (a)
 most
shops and retail outlets carry mostly the OEM version, which has to be
 sold
with a machine or critical hardware and can't be sold separately. With
 an
OEM version you don't get the pretty box or manual, just a CD and the
 serial
number, so it works out cheaper then the full version. And secondly a
 lot of
the shops really have to sell Vista as it's the most current version
 and I
believe for some Windows licensing issues, they are only meant to sell
 the
new one and not the old one. (I could be wrong with that, but I had a
strange idea it was something to do with some of the Microsoft
 agreements).
Also, as Microsoft are really pushing Vista, they are trying to phase
 out
XP, even though lots of people still want it!

If you are after Windows XP (Home or Pro) then I may be able to help.
 (I can
also get in Vista if you wanted that as well.) Please feel free to
 contact
me off list if you like as I have both of them available and am happy
 to
 discuss.

 Hope that information helps.

 Kind Regards
 Daniel

There are a few differences here. Firstly is the fact that iiNet have
*always* assimilated the companies they have acquired into their own. The
fact that they have stated they will not be doing this would lead me to
believe that they plan to do exactly what they say.

Secondly iiNet are well aware that Westnet has survived incredibly well in a
reseller market for one reason, customer service excellence. I think it
would be a long time before iiNet would want to make any changes which could
destroy thatfor $81M you really don't want the customer base abandoning

Re: SPAM? Malware?

It could be an email harvester.

If someone sends an email to an address that doesn't exist it will bounce
back saying no such user. If they keep track of all the accounts they sent
emails to, then they can deduct the bounces and are left with a valid user
list. Unfortunately there is very little that can be done about it.

I get these from time to time as well.

None of which means much to me! But it got me thinking:

 1) - It wouldn't seem to be much use as SPAM because there is no
 subject or
content to tempt anyone, there is no link to click, and even if you
 were
curious enough (or stupid enough) to try and reply - there is no-one to
reply to - if you DO hit the reply button the email program asks you
 for a
 to address.

 2) - Assuming that the view source shows you everything, it does not
 seem
to contain anything which could be malicious (just a few headers)

 3) - Even though the to field is blank, hitting the reply button
 generates
a blank reply from my bigpond account so I'm assuming it came in via
 this
account (it has come from somewhere!).

Anybody got any thoughts/info on this - as I say, it appears pretty
 harmless
but is there anything to worry about - could it be any sign of
 something
 lurking on my machine?

 Cheers

As far as I understood it the laws were amended towards the end of last year
to allow recording of tv broadcasts and also to make backups of your music
cd's for use on iPods etc.

A number of FTA providers now offer free downloads of the shows after they
have aired anyways, only problem is they are in DRM'ed formats and require a
specific player to view them.

Ah - an excellent topic of discussion.

I believe it's illegal in Australia to record free-to-air broadcasts,
 even
for personal use only (Australian Copyright Council - G079v04 - 'Fair
 Dealing').

Given that 99.99% of Australians ignore the law in this regard, should
 you
feel bad in advocating a P2P client/service to obtain a copy of the
 program,
 especially as:

 A) The program has already aired in Australia and B) The program has
 already
been paid for by the tax paying public.

 T.

P.S. You could argue that P2P services are a mass distribution system
 that
by their nature breach the 'for personal use only' premise, in that you
 upload and download simultaneously.

A VHS recording requires additional steps, i.e. effort, to generate the
 same
 result.

So is it less about the act, and more about the likely-hood of the act
 occurring?

Re: New iMac Advice

2008-04-29 Thread Adam hewitt
Keep in mind that the genuine Apple RAM is ECC Registered, where as any RAM
you buy is likely to be non-ECC registered unless you spend quite a bit of
money on it.

ECC registered RAM as listed by Wikipedia.org is:

Error-correcting memory

Main article: Dynamic random access memory#Errors and error correction

Because soft errors are extremely common in the DRAM of computers used in
satellites and space probes, such memory is structured as ECC memory (also
called EDAC protected memory). Typically every bit of memory is refreshed
at least 15 times per second. During this memory refresh, the memory
controller reads each word of memory and writes the (corrected) word
back.[citation needed] Such memory controllers traditionally use a Hamming
code, although some use triple modular redundancy. Even though a single
cosmic ray can upset many physically neighboring bits in a DRAM, such memory
systems are designed so that neighboring bits belong to different words, so
such single event upsets (SEUs) cause only a single error in any particular
word, and so can be corrected by a single-bit error correcting code. As long
as no more than a single bit in any particular word is hit by an error
between refreshes, such a memory system presents the illusion of an
error-free memory. [1]

I think it's always been exceptionally cheaper to buy RAM separate
from your Apple purchase but that was when you could keep your
standard RAM chips and add in extra ones yourself. I think the iMac
only has the 2 RAM chips that come preloaded so you'd be replacing 2GB
of RAM if you wanted to upgrade using non-Apple purchased RAM.

In terms of hard drive space you can easily get an external one at a
later date if you end up needing it for a decent price. In your shoes
I would go for a bit more hard drive space than I think I'd need but
 not worry about maxing it.

  Dear WAMUGgers

If I was *tempted* to buy a new iMac 24 3.06GB at Apple Ed price of
$2787, would it be good value to upsize to 4GHz RAM instead of 2GHz
  (2 x 2 GHz v 2 x 1GHz) for an extra $269.50, and to upsize the HDD
  from its 500GB to 750GB [Plus A$ 135.30] or to 1TB [Plus A$
333.30]? I'm not really worried about upgrading to wireless mouse
  and keyboard at this time.

The specs look Ok to me out of the box for what we currently need,
but I've always subscribed to the good advice of getting the highest
  specs we can at purchase.

Would it be better to update later, if needed, with Apple or non-
  Apple hardware?

Daniel, other? Just dreaming but Elaine's Ruby iMac is getting very
slow with Tigger and all her digital pics and rellie's PPTs on
board. We'll need a new baby to do it all on one day soon.

 Hello Peter,

 Plasma vs LCD

The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:

 1. Larger screen size availability.

 2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.

 3. Better color accuracy and saturation.

 4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving
 images).

The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:

 1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images.

 2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light
of phosphors to create the images.

 3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.

 4. Shorter display life span (about 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a
day for 9 years) than LCD. However, screen life span is improving to
as high as 60,000 hours. due to technology improvements.

LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:

 1. No burn-in of static images.

 2. Cooler running temperature.

 3. No high altitude use issues.

 4. Increased image brightness over Plasma.

 5. Longer display life (about 60,000 hours - at which time all you may
need to do is replace the light source, not the entire set). This can
vary according other environmental and use factors.

 6. Lighter weight (when comparing same screen sizes) than Plasma
 counterparts.

DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:

 1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks.

 2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag
artifacts) - However, this is improving.

 3. Not as common in large screen sizes above 42-inches as Plasma.
However, the number is growing fast, with some LCD sets having a
screen size as large as 65-inches now available to the general public.

 4. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility,
it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn
out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the
screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would
need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout
 becomes annoying to you.

 5. LCD televisions are typically more expensive than equivalent-sized
Plasma televisions (although this is changing), especially when
comparing EDTV Plasmas to HDTV-LCD Televisions.

A search on Google will bring up lots of information.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Plasma also has an optimal viewing distance which is a ratio of the size
of the screen (I forget what the math is). Therefore the bigger the screen,
the further you have to sit away from it to get a decent pictureLCD does
have that problem which means that a bigger LCD screen looks bigger
because you can sit closer to it.

I have the 42 1080p LG LCD with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and 5ms response
time. I haven't seen any ghosting on it with fast moving video (sports etc),
and the black doesn't look washed out at all. Overall I am extremely happy
with it. Oh and I picked it up for $2350 on sale.

Adam.

Re: Embedded Images ??

2007-12-15 Thread Adam hewitt
If you were able to see your email store on the server using a command line
and open the email using a text editor you would see the email headers (to:,
from:, subject, etc), plus the body plus the attachments presented in ascii.
There is no magical flags in the email format that dictates whether or not
the mail client will present it as an attachment or embedded into the body
of the email.

What does dictate it is twofold. Firstly whether or not the client supports
displaying the attachment inline and secondly whether or not there is an
application registered on the system that can be used to present the
attachment. The reason that zipping it works is because there is no
application registered that is capable of uncompressing the file and
displaying the contents. Similarly if someone sent an Excel file and you
don't have Excel installed it will also show as an attachment.

Your windows friends will be in exactly the same boat, although they do have
a setting in Outlook to turn off viewing attachments automatically (it is a
security risk leaving it on anyways as Spammers often embed html images from
remote servers into an email with the image having a name that is unique so
when that image is viewed in your mail client the Spammer knows that your
email account is valid)

Pull it apart IMMEDIATELY.

Cola contains acid which is causing oxidation of the circuitry inside the
keyboard. You really need to pull it apart and clean it all off from the
inside. It is a pain, but I failed to do this quick enough with my $120
Logitech G15 gaming keyboard and it is now sitting at the back of the room
to be used as spare parts when I finally get around to replacing it.

I mopped it up as best I could straight away, but am unsure if I am

Just as a note if anyone is looking at buying one, it is a beautiful

Re: iPhones

2007-10-08 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi Brad,

Welcome :D

I would recommend getting a redirection service in the US. I don't have the
details on me atm, however I know there are places on the net that allow you
to sign up from anywhere using a credit card. This allows you to buy
directly from apple.com and have the item shipped to the redirection service
which will then send it to Australia for you.

As for the firmware why bother about it? It won't take the crackers long to
break the new firmware anyways, so get your phone from a reputable place and
use it as a PDA until the unlock software is released for 1.1.1

Apart from anything else the 8GB iPhone is $399US which converted to
~$460AUS when I checked about a week ago. If you want to buy them from
somewhere in Oz you are looking at ~$950AUS from what I have seen.

 Hi everyone,

 First post here! ;-)

Being a die hard Mac fan and gadget freak I am keen to purchase an 8Gb
iPhone and unlock it for use in Australia (yes I realise it voids
 warranty,
visual voicemail doesn't work etc), but was wondering if any WAMUG
 users
have done so and wouldn't mind sharing their experiences.

I work in IT and love to tinker so am looking forward to performing the
unlocking myself, which from my reading appears quite straight forward.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy them from? eBay is selling lots,
 but
the prices are exhorbinent and there are also no guarantees that the
 phones
for sale are firmware 1.0.2 or lower (which allows for SIM unlocking).
 I
know that I must pay a slight premium to use an iPhone early in
 Australia,
but was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper international reseller or
 if
any good condition 2nd hand iPhones were available?

Just a quick note for any other members that may look at purchasing an
iPhone in the future overseas prior to the official launch in
 Australia:

 [snip]
To update anyone that is heading to the US to buy an iPhone, there are
reports that ATT stores in the boonies still have old ones (e.g.
 Week 32)
with 1.0.2 installed. Apple stores seem to turn over their stock
 quicker,
and Week 39 serials are about a 50-50 chance of 1.1.1 being pre-
 installed.

A typical iPhone Serial number: 7T727XYZWH8

Using the above as an example
 digits 1 to 3 (7T7) = Year / Batch code
 digits 4 to 5 (27) = Week of manufacture
digits 6 to 8 (XZY) = Unique identifier part of the S/N
 digits 9 to 11 (WH8) = 8Gb model

There are no reports of any week 40s on sale yet, although it is
 expected
 they will be 1.1.1

Serial numbers are on the outside back of the iPhone box, so could be
 read
before purchase (difficult) or before cutting the shrinkwrap.
 [snip]

Please feel free to email me direct if you wish not to list
 websites/prices
 on the list.

Cheers and have a good one!

Re: McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 Vista?

2007-09-20 Thread Adam Hewitt
I don't know about McAfee specifically however I am on the beta testing for
a couple of Vista Security Suites (eset and agnitum outpost) and it seems
that the security architecture of Vista has required an almost complete
rewrite for most of the security suites and it has left most of them well
behind in production.

I have tried a few of them and they are either not compatible at all or they
are so buggy that it makes them useless.

One thing to make sure of is that you disabled the windows firewall before
you installed it as it may be that it is clashing (and I know for a fact
that a majority of them do *not* disable the Windows Firewall during
installation).

 Hi WAMUGers,

I have the latest Parallels v3-5160 and had WindowsXP running with
McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 installed, perfectly.

I then decided to erase WindowsXP VM and install Windows Vista
Ultimate in Parallels yep, everything went well and Vista was
 working.
It is slower than WindowsXP and is heavy on CPU and my MacBook Pro
 (2.4 GHz / 3GB/ 800MHz/ 160GB HD) runs hotter.

I then tried to install McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007 in
Vista . oh dear not a good idea.
It seemed to complete it's installation and then Vista asks to be
restarted, which I did . then all Hell broke loose, Vista blocks
some startup items and then says it has a 'Critical Error' and will
 shutdown.
But, It won't shutdown, it won't do anything I had to just Quit
 Parallels.

I downloaded McAfee Removal tool, but Vista would not stay working
 for me to uninstall McAfee.
I eventually managed to start Vista Ultimate in Safe Mode was able
to uninstall McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007.

Have you heard of anyone that has been able to install run McAfee
Internet Security Suite 2007 in Vista?
I understood it was compatible with Vista .. On the box I notice
it does not mention Vista ;-(
I've searched and searched the Internet McAfee's support for an
 answer, to no avail.
I think there must be an update for Vista, but I'm damned if I can
 locate one.

Failing this, I guess I will have to install the 'Kaspersky Internet
security' that Parallels has under its 'Actions' menu.
This of course will cost me more dollars!
Or else re-install WindowsXP in Parallels.

Thanks for any information regarding this, I will appreciate it as
 always.

 Cheers,

Ronni who is focused on my beloved 'Pies' winning tonight against
 'The Cats' ;-)

My recommendation would be to put your home phone with Telstra and
reduce it to the minimum line rental ($19.95) and then sign up with
an ISP that gives you quality VoIP. With iINet you get extra
downloads if you have VoIP with them. The VoIP costs $10 extra to
reserve the phone number, so in the end you pay the same as you would
on a standard phone line for rental, however you can now make untimed
national calls for $0.15 and international calls for $0.02 per minute.

My home phone bill was traditionally around $45 with telstra and I am
now paying about $4-$5 in calls with iiNet VoIP.

It really depends on what you want to use it for...music or video?

If you want it for music then just go for the larger drive, if you want it

However, if you are going to be after a new mobile phone in the next ~5
months then why not wait and get the iPhone for only a bit more than the

I also use a Netgear DG834G. But, I then turned the wireless off and
use an Airport Extreme (and express to extend) for wireless. I have
been much happier since doing so (both Macs and PCs in this house).

On a related note, my next door neighbour gets 14000 out of his iinet
connection, but I only ever seem to get 6500. Has anyone had any
luck pushing their Netgear DG834G to proper ADSL2+ speeds? Are there
any usual issues I should think about (line noise etc?).

 Thanks

 Adam

I have gotten roughly 18Mbit+ on a number of different modems on iiNet ADSL.
The main cause of speed issues is distance from the exchange (I have a cable
length of 700mtrs from my exchange). With that aside any cable joins cause
issues, so if you have multiple telephone sockets then you might want to get
in the roof and make sure that they are cabled properly. The other problem
is issues with the line which is nothing you can fix.

One thing to note is that PPPoA is *slightly* better performing than PPPoE,
so you may get a marginal speed increase using PPPoA...however this is not
likely to show on your modem connection stats, but show up more in real
world download speeds.

run her windows based sewing machine software.
We have the application (for a Pfaff sewing machine) and a legit copy
 of Windows XP Pro.

What I need to know is what is considered the best (stable,
connectivity, ease of use, ease of setup, recoverability etc)
 virtualisation software for this task.
 Is it,
 VMware Fusion
 Parallels Desktop
 Bootcamp
 or something else?

Dual booting and switching between OS's is not a priority, she has a
20 iMac for proper computing use.

 Your thoughts please.

 robin

I haven't used VMware Fusion, however from all reviews I have read say that
it runs pretty much the same as Parallels but lacks some of the features
that Parallels has. The main feature of Parallels is that you can run your
virtualized applications in an OSX window, ie. The windows guest OS still
needs to be installed and you install your software inside that...but you
have the ability to put an Internet Explorer icon in your dock and when
run it opens *just* the Internet Explorer window so it *appears* to run as
part of the OS X desktop. (I have only read about this functionality and
have never tried it so I may have an incorrect understanding).

The only issue I have had with Parallels (and it would most likely be the
same with any virtualization software) is that switching between a Windows
install and OSX was painful (and may be fixed by seting up the feature
described above)...however if she is only needing a single application then
this is probably a non-issue anyways.

Unless you were wanting to play games on your Macbook under Windows, I
wouldn't bother with dual booting using Bootcamp.

Yes it does create another message, but only the header information

and eventually ISP's network administrators - engineers would be
forced to configure servers more thoroughly. Thus forcing them to
become more astute to what is actually running on their networks also.

Firstly how is your address going to be removed from the spammers arsenal
if the sender address was spoofed? Secondly not all SPAM is sent using a
misconfigured email server, I know for a fact that SPAMers also use
stolen/fake credit cards to purchase cheap dialup accounts at ISP's and use
the ISP's email server to SPAM. Without setting recipient limits and/or
limit the number of emails a person can send in one day how exactly do you
expect the ISP engineer to prevent this? By adding these limitations you are
then imposing limits on normal users (sending news letters to their bowling
club for example).

IT Security is a good website to read for ways to Eliminate Spam
  from your Inbox.

One is complaining about resending emails again, actually read this
paper correctly because it recommends sending more than one and the
actual cost factor not just monetary but actual time and testing
 would be staggering.

I read that article and I did not read anything about sending emails back,
let alone more than one. It did say at one point to send an email to the
source outlining conditions of them sending you SPAM, however this was in
the context of a legitimate company (read: real source address) sending you
SPAM.

Use the software as it was originally designed
to do and it will relieve most of the pain itself. Actually configure
the config scripts instead of accepting a holistic approach, ban the
use of HTML email this is the number 1 problem, as spammers not only
get addresses, but confirmation some one has received relevant email.
Email is a form of a letter - text.

I agree.

More importantly people whom setup email servers or email clients
should stop trying to find simple solutions and correctly setup said
servers-clients. So as to stop false email addresses being created on
their networks, then blaming others for doing it. Do something about
it, augh!... I do not have the time, but obviously have the time to
 be part of the cause.

I am guessing this is part of some deep seeded anger that we are not
priviledged to understand, as I don't recall anyone in this thread blaming
other people for their own server/client misconfiguration.

Bounced emails on these servers does no more or less damage than it
 originally created!

Once again I don't see how this is possible. Try bouncing an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and tell me what you think is going to happen?
The email will get to your ISP's email server and sit there for a week until
it decides that the remote email server doesn't actually exist (and not just
temporarily offline). Meanwhile that mail server is going to try every X
minutes to resend that emailhence causing unnecessary load on the
server.

Its all a numbers game. If they send out 10 million emails and 0.1% of those
buy something then thats still 10,000 sales.

Most people do get angry and annoyed, but there would likely be a few people
who really do want to buy Viagra over the internet. Plus I have been
noticing that there is significantly more phishing emails lately than actual

Do not bounce these or any SPAM email. The sender is usually either a
bogus account name/domain in which case you are only causing load on your
ISP's server, or in the case of viruses the sender is a harvested email
address out of someone else's address book, therefore bouncing it is
returning it to the wrong person.

Dropping email is the best you can (and should) do.

From my understanding it is simply that if one memory segent on the chip

logitech g15 gaming keyboard

2007-07-17 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

I managed to spill a few drops of coke on my g15 gaming keyboard last
Friday, which I wiped off immediately. I continued to use it for the rest of
the day without problems and then discovered on Saturday that 85% of the
keys don't work any more.

I pulled the keyboard apart and found that the coke had managed to get in
between the plastic membrane with the circuitry on it that registers the key
presses. I cleaned it all out and made sure it was all gone and dry, however
the circuitry has seemingly oxidized in some places and has gone a brownish
color. I put it all back together and tested it again and it made no
difference.

I phoned Logitech this morning to find out how I could go about getting the
replacement membrane (SOE-KBT432) and I was told that they do not sell
individual components and the best I could do was to leave the keyboard out
in the sun to dry or buy a new one.

I am very disappointed that I cannot purchase what would be a $10 part to
fix my $120 keyboard. Does anyone:

1. know where/if I can get a replacement for this, even a 3rd party one.
2. know anyone that has a broken g15 that I could pilfer the membrane from
3. know how I could go about getting this membrane fixed at a reasonable
price.

Kind regards,

Adam.

Re: Apples to Apples

2007-07-16 Thread Adam Hewitt

Hi All,

I *hate* these debates. I especially hate it when they try and pawn
themselves off as being a *true* comparison.

After watching that video and reading the comments I am inclined to
start a real Apples to Apples website that allows for comment to be
imbedded into the argument.

In any case here are my points on this topic.

1. The hardware costs are significantly different depending on
quality and manufacturer. Compare the cost of a Palit 8800GTX and a
BFG 800GTX for example.
2. The hardware is not even the point to most of the Apple ads, its
the software that is being compared (Upgrade to Vista for example)
3. The guy failed to take into account X11 and the linux ports. I
would say that this would constitute a large amount of free software,
so only giving examples from downloads.com is not accurate.
4. There were a number of arguments in the comments regarding viruses
and hackers and that Windows is less secure only because there are so
many more Windows machines around the world. This is a crap argument
because of one simple factWindows defaults to the user being
Administrator and OS X does not. If an Apple user got a virus it
would only affect that users environment unless they allowed it to
run as a priviledged user, but this is not a bug its user ignorance.
Also the Proof on Concept viruses or exploits for Mac have been 99%
local exploits, meaning you need physical access to the machine to
make it work...not really an issue in my opinion because if you have
local access to any machine you have access to all the data on it.
5. They also argued that Windows has to support much more hardware
and therefore it is inherently going to be less stable. The fact that
OS X is based on BSD means that it makes no difference what hardware
it needs to support as long as drivers are written properly it will
have no issues. I run Linux and I am overly certified in Linux
Administration and I have seen how these Unix variants run on varying
hardware and it is awesome. Linux can even use a wrapper around a
windows driver to get the hardware to work, which I have done and it
works very well. If Apple turned around tomorrow and said that they
were scraping the hardware component and allowing OS X to run on
anything, it would still be infinitely more stable than Windows.

I will stick with my Rolex thank you...

Adam.

In February of 2007, Apple Inc. acquired ownership the CUPS source
code and hired me (Michael R Sweet), the creator of CUPS.

CUPS will still be released under the existing GPL2/LGPL2 licensing
terms, and I will continue to develop and support CUPS at Apple.

Answers to questions about the change of ownership can be found on
 the frequently asked questions page.

The fact that it is being released under GPLv2 means that it *is* still open
source. Just because Apple bought the source code does not mean that it is
no longer open source.

What it does mean is that there is the potential for yet another source
branch with the current code being developed open source and Apple also
developing from the current code base as proprietary software.

Safari is a prime example of this as they took a snapshot of Konqueror, made
it close source and rewrote the parts they needed to to get it into the
software we see today. Of course they still give some code back to the
Konqueror developers, but how much is another question.

 Not quite right.

Apple took a snap-shot of KHTML (Konqueror is to KHTML as Safari is
to WebKit) and developed it to their needs. They released that code
back to KHTML. As it turned out, Apple did more work than the KHTML
guys so Apple then started WebKit and released the source to that.

At this time, WebKit is open source and is far more advanced than
 KHTML.

I am not 100% sure on the kernel specifics for Mac OS X, however I would
consider myself to be an expert on Linux and although the drive may boot by
simply swapping them, the kernel would have been setup to be a single
processor kernel and you won't get the benefit from your second processor.

I am not sure if there is a way to simply replace the kernel in OS X.

Re: Swap bootable hard drives?

Unless I missed something in that article, it didn't help at all.

The question isn't whether OS X will support the processor, it is whether an
install on a single processor machine can be swapped over to a dual
processor machine.

I would like to think that Apple have a selection of kernels on the install
disks and they select the appropriate one on install. Therefore you won't
have SMP support on your existing install...so as I said, it will work, but
you won't be able to use both processors.

...but I am no guru on these matters.

problem with it. It syncs everything perfectly.

The only two issues that I have is that:

1. They released an update about 1 month after I bought it and I was
elegable for $10 off the RRP to upgrade (which I never did as it does
everything I need now anyways) and

2. That if you sync your PDA between your Mac and a Windows PC you will end
up getting duplicated entries for everything. This is apparently a known
issue with windows based PDA's and probably not so much a problem with
Missing Sync.

 Hi,

My sister is looking for a colour printer for her Mac.

She is looking for a printer that can run when either the colour
 cartridge/s
or the black and white cartridge is empty - she is sick of replacing
 them.

She ideally wants one that can scan and copy as well. Faxing not
 required.

Can anyone suggest one that would meet her requirements and be
 affordable?

 Smiles
 Aurora

I bought an HP C3180 from Target for $120 about 5 months ago and that has
been very good. It comes with a Mac software CD and everything works
perfectly.

Kind regards,

Adam.

Hi Antony,

Given that the Mac is a BSD/unix derivitive I would like to think that
you are much better off installing Linux on this fileserver. Not only
will you have greater stability and security, but you have a much
greater number of options as far as mounting the remote filesystem such
as NFS, samba or even appletalk.

I understand that Linux is a little daunting for the first time user,
however with newer distributions out there they are becoming easier and
eaier to use (I would recommend using one with a GUI interface such as
Ubuntu).

Hi Glenn,

I doubt this is relevant, however I used to have the same problem in Windows
XP which turned out to be that the mic port was configured for use as a
subwoofer port. Once I disabled the subwoofer option then the mic worked as
per normal.

I have never owned anything other than an iBook and MacBook so I don't know
what the ports are like on the iMac, but is it possible that the audio is
setup for surround sound?

Recording using the built-in microphone is fine.

However when I plug the external mic into the audio-in plug on the
back of my iMac G5 (PowerPC):
 - input in Sound Prefs switched over to Line In
 - input volume is turned up (max)
 - input level shows 60-70%

 Am I missing something?

Re: Deleting a protected file

2007-03-25 Thread Adam Hewitt

have you tried the force option to rm? If not try rm -f filename

If that does work then chances are good that there is a process
holding the file open. try running 'lsof | grep filename' and it
will give you the process ID of the process that is using it. You can
then do 'ps uax | process id' and if it looks like a process that
can be killed then kill it using 'kill -9 process id'

Re: Spam Filter.

2007-03-12 Thread Adam Hewitt
I am not 100% sure of the SPAM filters currently used by Westnet
however I am fairly sure that they are the same appliances that are
used by iiNet. These devices barely even utilize baysian filters but
use a global network of probes to monitor email traffic patterns and
can block connections before they even get to the email servers based
on the IP address the connection is being created from. They cost
hundreds of thousands of dollars and have a false positive rate of
under 1 in 1 million emails.

Based on this information I would recommend changing the delivery
options in your account tools to delete the spam emails before they
even get to your inbox, that way you aren't paying for spammers to
use your bandwidth. I have been doing this for roughly a year and I
am yet to find out that I have missed an email. Lets face it, email
is not a reliable enough medium where people are using it to the
point that missing an email would be the end of the world, so even if
you do miss one email in a million chances are it wont matter.

Hi All,

In a strange coincidence my MacBook battery started exhibiting the
exact same symptoms as a recent poster on this list. I was using it
on Monday and I didn't have the power plugged in and went out for the
day, when I came home I found that the battery had drained and the MB
had switched itself off. When I plugged it back in the power came on,
however I noticed that the battery indicator had a cross through it
and if I clicked on it it said No batteries available.

I did a bunch of searching on Google and found that apparently there
is a widespread issue with the MacBook batteries where they have a
minimum charge limit and if the power drains below that level then
the battery is no longer recognised and can never be charged
again*sigh*. So I opened a case with Apple and the guy, despite
being very helpful and accepting that I had already tried all the
usual troubleshooting techniques, seemed to know nothing about this
being a widespead issue. I took the MB into Next Byte in Carousel
(sp?) and they put my battery into another MB and sure enough it
still didn't work.

So I am now without a battery for 3 weeks on my work laptop, which
makes it hard to see clients, however I thought I would let the list
know that this is a problem so if you experience it you know what its
all about.

Cheers,

Adam.

streaming video

2007-03-01 Thread Adam Hewitt

Hi All,

I have trouble streaming video via my wireless LAN to my MacBook. The
videos are stored on my windows PC running Vista and streamed over an
802.11G connection. The video will typically play for about 3-5
minutes and then pause for 30-45 seconds. If I play them via the
wired LAN they play fine. The files are usually about 350Mb are DivX
or Xvid and are TV shows I have...errmrecorded to my windows PC
using my TV to Hard drive broadband internet convertor :o/

I had assumed that this was due to the bandwidth of the wireless not
being good enough to view the files that I am trying to view (without
the constant rebuffering), however one of my mates came over the
other day and he reckons that he has no problems viewing similar
files over his wireless LAN. Oh and my wireless signal strength is
perfect and no one else is using the wireless while I am attempting
this.

Does anyone know if this would be caused by the wireless connection
or if there is something amiss with my setup? I couldn't find
anywhere in the quicktime config to change bandwidth settings or
similar.

Cheers,

Adam.

project management software

2007-02-21 Thread Adam Hewitt

Hi All,

I am looking for some Project Management software in the likes of MS
Project. It doesn't need to look like the MS version, nor does it
need to work the same...just have similar functionality. Cost is also
a limiting factor.

I have just tried GanttProject and found its interface was pretty
crap, ie. only the first 8 letters of a task title is shown which
makes it difficult to see which task you are looking at when you have
a bunch of tasks allocated. It also seemed like you could only view a
single project at a time, whereas with MS Project you have all your
projects in a list that expands to show tasks and sub tasks, etc.

I downloaded OmniPlan which looks good, but the trial only allows you
to have up to 20 tasks which is no good for me to trial properly.

Could anyone in the know please provide me with your perspective on
whatever you have tried.

Cheers,

I had a linux server a while ago that exhibited the same symptoms.
Given that the server was only running a squid cache and connecting
my ADSL I didn't really care if the hard drive died. After a few
months of the clicking noise issue the machine hard locked up with
nothing of any interest displayed on the screen. When I rebooted the
OS would not load citing OS not found: Please insert system disk or

everything on the same hard drive and everything continued to work.

I am fairly sure that I never had that drive fail again, but I don't

The moral is that the drive may keep working for a long time, but

Touche.

In the body of the email he says 20Gb to format for Windows to store
data...I guess he needs to clarify.

Hey

It can't be done, you can't run Windows off an external disk of any
sort,
firewire or USB2. Though on really new computers you can boot off
USB2

memory sticks which is sweet.

Subject: Partition in external firewire disk to run Windows

Hi,

I have a 100Gb external hard drive connected to my eMac via
Firewire and am
running Tiger 10.4.8

I have an old PC with an internal 4gb hard drive, and a small
profile box -
ie there are no spare bays inside it. I want more capacity to store
PC files
without having to use Virtual PC on the Mac.

I was hoping to create two partitions on the 100Gb drive and format
one for
the Mac and the other of about 20Gb to format for Windows to store
data. The
HDD enclosure has firewire and USB ports. I suspect the PC is using
USB 1 -
it's pretty old and I know it will be slow.

I cannot work out how to format the HDD into partitions using Disk
Utility,
nor to format one of those partitions into a Windows format. It can
format
into Unix, would that do??

I may have some OS9 Formatting software that may be able to do the
job, but
would the disk be readable by Tiger if I used an old application to
write
new disk drivers?

Is what I am trying to do feasible?
Is it possible with Disk Utility?
Or other alternatives?

Thanks

Tim

You dont use .Mac by any chance do you? I have never used it myself,
but it seems like one of the things that .Mac would do.

I hope someone can shed some light on this.

We have two Macs at home, both on line through ADSL modem to iinet.

We recently sold an eMac to friends and yesterday I connected it to
BigPond by ADSL modem at their house. Whilst I was there I
deleted a whole lot of bookmarks on Safari...stuff that the new
owners wouldn't want. When I got home I noticed that all those
bookmarks deleted on the Mac I had just set up had vanished from
Safari on our other machine.

What the!

any ideas or should I call GhostBusters (or a shrink)?

Good for a collector, as it was the first Powerbook based on
