Hofbrau - Mayberry Moment
We recently made a trip to Helen, GA. For those who don't know, it is a small Georgia mountain town with German heritage, and is set up to look like an Alpine village. It is quite fun, and the food and German shops are great. While riding through town, my wife spied a restaurant called the Hofbrau. This reminded me of the episode whre Barney and Thelma Lou were pretending to take Helen and Andy out to dinner, but were really stalling them to spring the engagement party upon them. Anyway, when they are trying to figure out where to eat, Helen suggests the Hofbrau in Mt. Pilot, and Barney replies Wienerschnitzel, are you kidding?. Anyway, sure enough as soon as my wife suggested the Hofbrau, I replied Wienerschnitzel, are you kidding? We all got a good laugh, but the food was quite good. Thus, the entire weekend the phrase kept going through my mind because everything was set with a German themeeven the pancake house(haus) Wienerschnitzel, are you kidding? If the script of Happy Valley was true..whetever happened to the Indian eservation, and Nugatuck's family?? All we hear about after that is one Native merican at election time. The native Americans are mentioned again in the episode about the Battle of Mayberry. Opie interviews Tom Strongbow, who looked curiously like Hank the bowler from Mt. Pilot when Howard bowled his 300. Maybe Tom Strongbow was a descendant of Nugatuck? Perhaps the reservation survived at least as long as until the Battle of Mayberry. One would presume that Mayberry had already been founded at the time of the battle. Maybe they moved after getting embarassed by the true story of the battle? So it would be interesting to hear from any of you ho still live in your hometown and what your feelings are as to whether you re happy that you stayed or whether you wish you would have moved on to ther places. Ken - interesting question. My dad's entire family, and my family grew up in Hendersonville, NC. Most, but not all of us left at college / job time unless we were content working in the mill. Two of my aunts remained in the area, and one has moved back in retirement. My uncle moved away, but also moved back for retirement. My brother and I both left town for college and have not moved back.. I love the place, but have other retirement plans. So, I tend to use it as a vacation destination as I make my way up to the mountains. My mother still lives there.. It was a great place to grow up and I still read the local paper and keep up with several of my friends, but it is unlikely I will return there to reside, Of the seven or eight friends I keep up with, only one of them never left town.. The rest of us scattered to SC, TX, SC, LA, the big city of Raleigh, and to CA, AZ, and so on.. The list of doctorates I've seen so far in answer to my trivia question included everal professional degrees (MD, DVM, JD, PharmD, etc.) which are different rom the academic degrees. The ones that might qualify listed so far would be What about Dr. Merle Harmon, PPD. Barn might have gotten the initials wrong, but he was most defintely said to be a doctor which did not sound medical. He sounded more like a scientist... How about: Reverend Hobart M. Tucker, D.D. I am assuming the following would have had academic doctorate degrees: (I am including psychology but not veterinarians) Dr. Harrison Everett Breen of New York City, the visiting preacher Neil Bentley, Attorney at Law (It takes a doctorate now - not sure about then.) The Lady Goober dated after the computer matchup. (Wasn't she a psychologist?) Lee Drake, another lawyer Arthur Harrington, Ron Bailey's attorney A number of attorneys Frank - the friend of Peggy who was a pharmacist Fred - Ellie's uncle Dr. Merle Harmon, (He was a licensed PPD according to Barney) Jack, Charlie's nephew was a candidate for a degree in Psychology... It's about 250 miles from Raleigh to Asheville, which I've driven many times. The ost ridiculous distance mistake was when Aunt Bee went to dinner with the ongressman in Manteo,it;s only about 350 miles away! Didn't they go to dinner in Nags Head? At The Reef? Or was that someone else? Also, how far that is from Mayberry depends upon which episode you base your location of Mayberry. In one episode, it is about 30 miles form Raleigh. According to mapquest, Raleigh is 190 miles from Manteo, so that would make it around 220 miles to Manteo. But, in other episodes it is a different distance from Raleigh. Now, if you base the trip on where Mt. Airy is located then it is almost 350 miles to Manteo. I too have made many trips from Asheville to Raleigh. I grew up in Hendersonville, and we went to Raleigh / Durham for the palyoffs in high school a lot, and then a lot of friends went Chapel Hill and N.C. State.. Maybe in return to Mayberry, Aunt Bee could have reconnected with her cousin Bradford and finally gone into the Ice Cream business. Or that it's simply understood that each season the same ishermen occupy the same spots and nobody new is allocated space? I think what they are saying is its hard to find a place that someone hasn't already staked out. Maybe they were gentlemen and did not want to take a spot away from a guy that was accustomed to fishing there. But, to my knowledge there has never been any real official Claim to a spot. That would be akin to the old claim during the gold rush Remember Hodie Snitch? He was a tough guy and he tried to take away Andy's fishing spot. Andy fought him for it. (So he says!) But, if old Howard showed up on opening day he would either have to find a spot that wasn't already occupied or he would have to be like Hodie Snitch.Or maybe they were just hinting that it would be very crowded... Also, there is something unsportsmanlike about walking right up and fishing next to a spot where somebody is already fishing. Neil, what Regis said as the gold truck approached was Worshippers of ammon. With mammon referring to wealth or money. Jesus refers to it in cts 6:24 when he says You cannot serve God and mammon. That would make a lot more sense, because he did it when they all gathered around to see the Gold Truck.. As for mentioning biblical characters, I think the intent of the question is actually mentioning the character - not someone with the same name like Gomer, wasn't it? Lastly, Rev. After some research ordnance is ammunition or explosives and ordinance is a ocal law. Sorry to have missed out on this one folks, but being an expert lawyer I can tell you beyond a reasonable doubt that Ordinance is a local law, and ordnance is a supply of weapons, ammunition, etc (In real life I am a municpal lawyer and enforce ordinances all day long in court) Now here in the South, however, the two words are probably pronounced in an identical manner which adds to the confusion. One of the regulations for canoeing the Green River in NC is that no alcohol r glass containers are permitted on the river. It's a state law. I guess ou might even call it the Green River Ordinance. Oops Dan - I think I might have broken that one a few times in college as I frequented the Green River in NC. An interesting story about the Green River in NC - i was fishing there with my dad when I was about 12 years old. I wandered on down the stream ahead of him and started talking to this man I did not know. We talked about the fishing and looked at the fish in each other's creel. (Neither of us had Old Sam) I talked to him maybe a good ten minutes while we continued to fish. My dad wandered on down the stream looking for me, and said hi to the man. They talked small talk a minute about fishing, and then we moved on back up stream. When we got out of earshot, my dad asked me if I knew who the man was. I said no - that I had never see him before. It ends up that my fishing buddy turned out to be Perry Como. When my dad told me, my response was Who? This was many years ago, but even back then it was hard to find a 12 year old that was a Perry Como fan. Here's a bucket thought..if you were stranded on a deserted island - don't hink Castaway, think Bahamas - and you were allowed only one character from AGS to share the island with who would you choose and why? I would have to go ith Andy, as he possesses all the qualities that I could live with day in and ay out, but only if he brings his guitar. Well, part of me says I would like to be stranded with the manicurist, played by Barbara Eden, Mary Simpson the County nurse (blonde version), or maybe Lee Drake the female lawyer (to talk about manicures, health and the law of course!). But, another part says maybe it should be Otis because he is a pretty good guy and is always having fun. Then again, I might like to have Rev. Tucker along in case of the rapture.
