Last night I saw our Miss Ellie as a young child in a film from long ago.
She played the daughter to Jeanette MacDonald and baby sister to Jane

Hofbrau - Mayberry Moment

2011-04-25 Thread Bcunnin107

We recently made a trip to Helen, GA. For those who don't know, it is a small
Georgia mountain town with German heritage, and is set up to look like an
Alpine village. It is quite fun, and the food and German shops are great.

While riding through town, my wife spied a restaurant called the Hofbrau. This
reminded me of the episode whre Barney and Thelma Lou were pretending to take
Helen and Andy out to dinner, but were really stalling them to spring the
engagement party upon them. Anyway, when they are trying to figure out where to
eat, Helen suggests the Hofbrau in Mt. Pilot, and Barney replies
Wienerschnitzel, are you kidding?.

Anyway, sure enough as soon as my wife suggested the Hofbrau, I replied
Wienerschnitzel, are you kidding? We all got a good laugh, but the food was
quite good. Thus, the entire weekend the phrase kept going through my mind
because everything was set with a German themeeven the pancake
house(haus)

Wienerschnitzel, are you kidding?

If the script of Happy Valley was true..whetever happened to the Indian
eservation, and Nugatuck's family?? All we hear about after that is one Native
merican at election time.

The native Americans are mentioned again in the episode about the Battle of
Mayberry. Opie interviews Tom Strongbow, who looked curiously like Hank the
bowler from Mt. Pilot when Howard bowled his 300. Maybe Tom Strongbow was a
descendant of Nugatuck?

Perhaps the reservation survived at least as long as until the Battle of
Mayberry. One would presume that Mayberry had already been founded at the time
of the battle. Maybe they moved after getting embarassed by the true story of
the battle?

Favorite Lines

2010-12-15 Thread Bcunnin107

Sometimes, I think trying to pick my absolute favorite lines from TAGS is like
trying to pick your favorite sister or brother or choose between your
parents. So, here is a list of SOME of my favorites.

Otis: Uncle Nat? What are you doing here?

Howard: Wanna buy a ship in a bottle?

Goober: That's the couch I was telling you about.. (To Lydia)

Aunt Bee: My beacon of light to shine forever in the darkness of political
ignorance!

Ernest T:I wonder who that could be?

Gomer: You just run up an alley and holler fish!

Barney: Pipe down three! I think I've heard just enough about that
tomato! and
What's the matter with third party? It's not dirty!

Opie:Paw, just what can you do with a grown woman?

Floyd: Maude, Al, if those hamburgers are ruined I won't be
responisble...

Thelma Lou: If you call her a dog again, I'll never speak to you.

Andy:Remember Benji?

Helen: The name is Helen Crump! C-R-U-M-P!

Briscoe: There ain't a horse in sight, but if'n one comes along we'll
give him the right of way.
Ya hear that boys? No yelling at the table...

Col Harvey: Have you ever known a sick or tired Indian?

Oh well, maybe more later

Mayberry Moment

I had a funny Mayberry Moment last Sunday. We are doing a Christmas play at
church, and I am one of the three wisemen. Well, last week we received our
costumes and I am the wiseman carrying gold. They handed me a box, and I put it
aside. Later, I opened it and it was empty. I immediately exclaimed The Gold's
gone! We've been hijacked. I knew you guys weren't on the level

Ken - interesting question. My dad's entire family, and my family grew up in
Hendersonville, NC. Most, but not all of us left at college / job time unless
we were content working in the mill. Two of my aunts remained in the area, and
one has moved back in retirement. My uncle moved away, but also moved back for
retirement. My brother and I both left town for college and have not moved
back.. I love the place, but have other retirement plans. So, I tend to use
it as a vacation destination as I make my way up to the mountains. My mother
still lives there..

It was a great place to grow up and I still read the local paper and keep up
with several of my friends, but it is unlikely I will return there to
reside, Of the seven or eight friends I keep up with, only one of them
never left town.. The rest of us scattered to SC, TX, SC, LA, the big city
of Raleigh, and to CA, AZ, and so on.. I miss it at times, though

ost ridiculous distance mistake was when Aunt Bee went to dinner with the
ongressman in Manteo,it;s only about 350 miles away!

Didn't they go to dinner in Nags Head? At The Reef? Or was that someone else?

Also, how far that is from Mayberry depends upon which episode you base your
location of Mayberry. In one episode, it is about 30 miles form Raleigh.
According to mapquest, Raleigh is 190 miles from Manteo, so that would make it
around 220 miles to Manteo. But, in other episodes it is a different distance
from Raleigh.

Now, if you base the trip on where Mt. Airy is located then it is almost 350
miles to Manteo.

I too have made many trips from Asheville to Raleigh. I grew up in
Hendersonville, and we went to Raleigh / Durham for the palyoffs in high school

I think what they are saying is its hard to find a place that someone hasn't

away from a guy that was accustomed to fishing there. But, to my knowledge
there has never been any real official Claim to a spot. That would be akin
to the old claim during the gold rush

Remember Hodie Snitch? He was a tough guy and he tried to take away Andy's
fishing spot. Andy fought him for it. (So he says!) But, if old Howard showed
up on opening day he would either have to find a spot that wasn't already
occupied or he would have to be like Hodie Snitch.Or maybe they were just
hinting that it would be very crowded...

Also, there is something unsportsmanlike about walking right up and fishing
next to a spot where somebody is already fishing. It's like interrupting,
getting in the way or maybe even interloping

Now here in the South, however, the two words are probably pronounced in an

Oops Dan - I think I might have broken that one a few times in college as I
frequented the Green River in NC.

An interesting story about the Green River in NC - i was fishing there with my
dad when I was about 12 years old. I wandered on down the stream ahead of him
and started talking to this man I did not know. We talked about the fishing and
looked at the fish in each other's creel. (Neither of us had Old Sam) I talked
to him maybe a good ten minutes while we continued to fish. My dad wandered on
down the stream looking for me, and said hi to the man. They talked small talk
a minute about fishing, and then we moved on back up stream.

When we got out of earshot, my dad asked me if I knew who the man was. I said
no - that I had never see him before. It ends up that my fishing buddy turned
out to be Perry Como. When my dad told me, my response was Who?

This was many years ago, but even back then it was hard to find a 12 year old

ith Andy, as he possesses all the qualities that I could live with day in and

Well, part of me says I would like to be stranded with the manicurist, played
by Barbara Eden, Mary Simpson the County nurse (blonde version), or maybe Lee
Drake the female lawyer (to talk about manicures, health and the law of
course!).

But, another part says maybe it should be Otis because he is a pretty good guy

Then again, I might like to have Rev. Tucker along in case of the rapture.

I most definitely would not want Howard Sprague along because he already had
the chance to live on an island and blew it! Boy what a chance he lost! :)

xpand on it)

How about:

They ought not to do that! (Andy)
Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!
But he can't sing! (Thelma Lou on Barney being in the choir)
Don't use that tone of voice with me! (Andy to Rafe)
I think I detected a clinker! (John Masters)

Somebody can debunk them, I am sure. This came right off the top of my head,
with no research. They just came to mind as episodes of interest. (formerly
known as suspects) And, of course, some were too short to count, but well, I

Hey folks - I have been ominously quiet lately. It's been a difficult and busy
summer, but just wanted to get back to WBMUTBB. I've missed it too much over
the past two months. After 14 years, it is hard to say how much I have missed
the daily banter.

Allen - thanks for 14 good years, and I'm looking forward to many more!

When Andy hatched the plan, didn't John Masters protest and say But Glen Cripe
is not a tenor, to which Andy just kept replying It'll work John...It'll
work.

Number 44

2010-05-27 Thread bcunnin107

Hey - is there a significance to the number 44 for TAGS? It was Opie's troop
number, and it was also the number put into the hat in The Jinx, so that
Henry was supposed to pull it out and win.(But he got 6 7/8 - the hat size)

Curious.Any others?

Anyone else recall ominous weather in our fair town?

There were thunderstorms in Dogs, Dogs, Dogs.

There was once a flood where Gomer was sworn in as a deputy.

Not ominus, but there was a big drought in the gypsy episode.

Bad weather occurred in the Sam Becker episode..

Several episodes of rain...

Is that in the episode where Otis buys a cow, thinking it is a horse? At the

don't Andy and Barney open both doors and yell Welcome Home Otis! as he rides

I think what Andy meant was that he seemed to be gaining Ron Bailey's trust
ntil that moment. Even though Andy's comment was innocent, the Bailey boy's
ynical outlook interpreted the remark as a calculated ploy to win him over, so
e became even more antagonistic and resentful than before. Therefore, Ron got
way from Andy in that moment.

Doesn't Andy mean something like that Ron Bailey isn't thinking the right way?
(He got away) Sort of like, well, we had him in our camp but he got the wrong
idea about us and jumped ship..

As Ron said, It's sort of hard to put into words but I always thought it

I haven't read the Digest in about three weeks. Hope I didn't miss anything too
great!

Unfortunately, I have been out of the loop since my mother-in-law passed away.
It has been a trying time for my family, but we're back home and back Messing'
Up the Bulletin Board.

There are a lot of mother-in-law jokes around, including on TAGS. But, my
mother-in-law was a nice woman, and fortuantely, I never had to hit her with a
leg of lamb or anything!!! (Not that I would do such a thing - I am surprised
Otis would, though)

Did anybody besides Otis ever mention their mother-in-law on the show?
