Re: Life in Eau Claire is Busy (Ken Anderson)

2019-06-03 Thread Janet Anderson
Ken, I think that, as long as you are physically able and enjoy it, you should
keep right on with the parades and appearances. You bring a lot of joy to
people, you introduce youngsters to TAGS, and you obviously enjoy it, too. And
it would appear that Linda is very supportive. So my advice is, don't give it
up!

{Spam?} Life in Eau Claire is Busy

2019-06-02 Thread Ken Anderson
Well, our car show and parade season is well underway here in Wisconsin.
It got off to a rather rainy start with four events being cancelled in one
week. But this weekend we did one car show and two parades.

Everytime I start to think of maybe cutting back on the parades something
happens to change my mind. Today I was doing a parade in a small town and
the parade is a very large one that attracts a lot of very enthusiastic
people. As I was walking along interacting with the kids and handing out
some citations, a little boy of about four years old came up to me and
shook my hand and said, "When I grow up I want to be just like you." That
one touched me.

Here is the link to my June column if you are interested. It is entitled
"Fishing Mayhem in Mayberry"
.
https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/179900_90ce43fe837d495d999654d52c738968.pdf

I have two major presentations to do in the next few weeks. I have been
asked to speak on the history of my small hometown village at the annual
Dorchester Days Celebration. So I have put together a powerpoint
presentation for that and then I have been asked to do a program
"Remembering 1964" for my 55th high school class reunion. So I am working
on that.

TAGS and Eau Claire Police

2018-07-24 Thread Ken Anderson
I was washing my squad car today getting ready for a car show when an Eau
Claire Police Car pulled up to our house. Two police officers came up to
me and introduced themselves. The one officer was training a new rookie,
Hmong officer, who was not at all familiar with TAGS. He wanted the new
officer to meet me. So they spent about 20 minutes with me talking about
TAGS and Mayberry. The Hmong officer, whose family came from Laos, of
course had no idea what TAGS was all about. But he sure did by the time
they left.

Two days ago at a car show a gentleman came up to me and handed me his
business card. It said he was a U.S. Marshal. He said he had seen my car
around the city and he always wanted to meet me and talk about TAGS.

Last night I went to the visitation for a 95 year old friend who died. It
was at a new big funeral home where I had never been. I walked in the door
and the funeral director walked up to me and said, "Hey, you're the
Mayberry Guy". For a minute I thought he had me mixed up with the "My
Pillow Guy". He then told me that if I ever wanted to go to Mt. Airy, I
should let him know and he would drive me there. But I don't know. I was
afraid to ask if I would have to ride in the back of his hearse.

Merry Christmas from Cold and Snowy Eau Claire, WI

2017-12-24 Thread Ken Anderson
It is Christmas Eve and as I sit here listening to Christmas carols, I am
reflecting on how much Christmas has changed since I was a young boy
growing up in a very small town in the 50's.
Christmas was a real time for family and friends. Our school and town had
no issues with having a "Christmas Program" where the kids portrayed
shepherds and angels. None of us had to travel for Christmas as most of
our family were all within a few minutes drive from home. Our gifts were
wonderful, yet our parents did not accumulate a lot of debt in order to
purchase them. They bought what they could afford. We had no need for
lengthy printed Christmas letters as we were such a close knit community
that we already knew what our family and friends had done during the year.
No trips to the malls or other big box stores. A lot of our gifts were
purchased through Christmas catalogs or from local merchants. We had no
shrimp, crab legs, oysters, or other exotic foods as our local grocers did
not carry any of it and I am sure our mothers would not have known how to
cook them. No internet to find out either.

I guess what I am trying to say is that like everything else in life,
Christmas has changed a lot. And I don't think it has been for the better
either.

So now I am going to pop my TAGS DVD in the TV and watch "The Christmas
Story".

Merry Christmas everyone and may you have a happy and healthy 2018.

Update from Eau Claire

2017-08-18 Thread Ken Anderson
My wife and I attended a funeral at our former church. As soon as the
funeral director saw me she had to come up to me and tell me about her new
grandson. The parents are such TAGS fans that they named their little boy
after one of the Mayberry good citizens. Yep, they named him Asa. Bet you
didn't see that one coming; She said they just loved Asa when he was the
bank guard and the night watchman so they had to name their son after him.
I told her I thought Otis would be a better choice as the little guy
probably has a hard time walking without falling down.

We did our 68th event yesterday and we have three this weekend. Rather
than slowing down, our schedule is getting busier. Luckily we have had a
nice cool summer thus far so the parades and car shows have been great.

I did my presentation at a senior citizen luncheon on Tuesday and when I
finished quite a few of the seniors were wiping their eyes. They thanked
me so much for bringing back so many memories for them. I even sold six
books.

Mayberry Guru Night in Eau Claire

2017-07-28 Thread Ken Anderson
We had a couple of great days here in Eau Claire. Our Ford and Lincoln
Dealership had their 3rd annual Rendition Car Show. We were the winners of
their top Rendition Award for my portrayal of Barney Fife along with our
squad car. It was a great event.

Last night the Burger King Corporation in Eau Claire hosted a Mayberry Guru
Night at their Weekly Car Show. What a great night that was. I received
so much recognition by Burger King with lots of interviews. TV station was
there for their weather report and they too showed the car and talked about
the Mayberry night. A friend of mine dressed up as Otis and came and he
was a big hit. There was so much Mayberry love around that a young man got
down on his knees in front of the squad car and proposed to his
girlfriend. She accepted.

We also won the People's Choice Award. We have another big car show on
Saturday and a Parade at a Nabor's Day Celebration in a neighboring town.

Check my website at www.themayberryguru,com to see a page dedicated to

I have a feeling Monroe Newton might be in Eau Claire this weekend. I just
listened to our five o'clock news and they told us that the Big Liquidation
Event that a gentleman had set up at our Expo Center has been shut down.
It was suppose to run the entire weekend but the sheriff's department
closed it down after just one hour. They had received complaints about
some of the merchandise and apparently there was some illegal activity
going on. I guess old Newton wasn't as ept with painting as he thunk he

Dynamite near Eau Claire

2014-11-02 Thread Ken Anderson
The following news story was on one of our TV stations today. I called the
police to find out if any goats were found in the vicinity, but they
assured me none were seen.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU)- Dynamite was found in an abandoned building in
Buffalo Co. Saturday.

Around 1 A.M. Saturday the Buffalo County Sheriff's office got the call. A
man told deputies he had found the dynamite while cleaning the building.

Deputies say they setup a perimeter around the area until the Dane County
explosives unit arrived.

The unit then brought the dynamite to a secluded area and destroyed it.

Robin Hood Comes to Eau Claire

2014-10-27 Thread Ken Anderson
-- One of our city theater groups is putting on a production of Robin
Hood. It is a play about a stupid sheriff and his stupid deputy. They are
allowing children to attend. What kind of play is that for children to
see? A play like that ought to be banned from being on stage. I know from
personal experience how damaging to a child Robin Hood can be. When I was
a kid my friends and I would play Robin Hood in Sherwood Forest, I mean
Rau's Woods. And what character did I get to be? I always had to be Maid
Marian. My friends said it was because I had cute legs and I was the only
one who had a sister who would let me wear her dress. They didn't even let
me have any weenies and root beer. I had to have cookies and tea. To this
day I will not allow my wife to buy Robin Hood flour. I insist she buys
Gold Medal.

A Mayberry Saturday in Eau Claire

A busy Mayberry day here in Eau Claire. I will have the squad car at our
Chippewa Valley Technical College all day for their 100th Anniversary. The
criminal justice department is hosting an invite only car show with
vintage cars from the various decades. They want mine to represent the
police departments from the 60's. A big celebration with lots going on
albeit will be a cold day only in the 50's. Then immediately following
that I will be arriving at a home in Eau Claire with lights flashing and
siren blaring to pick up a couple from Chicago. A lady will be going in to
the hospital for a lung transplant and their family thought a nice ride
around town in the Mayberry Squad Car and the Mayberry Guru would be a good
gift to her before her major surgery. So I am looking forward to both
event. Not nearly as good as being at Mayberry Days bu it will certainly

Mayberry Christmas in Eau Claire

2011-11-29 Thread Ken Anderson
Our home in Eau Claire is slowly being transformed to a Christmas
Wonderland with our many Christmas trees, outdoor lights, and numerous
decorations. Among the most prominent is my Hawthorne Mayberry Christmas
Village which is proudly displayed under our Christmas tree in our living
room. This past summer my wife bought me a beautiful Lionel Polar Express
train which now circles Mayberry as we sit in the living room. It is
especially enjoyable as our new kitten, Tillie, finds the train
fascinating. While it slowly circles the tree she follows along behind it
and will occasionally stop to watch it pass through Mayberry. Then she
once again gets under the tree and follows the train around the tree. So
we have begun a new Christmas tradition. I continue to have my other train
sets circling through my other Mayberry Hawthorne Village down in our
family room, so the spirit of Mayberry is found throughout our entire house.

Happy Days and Mayberry Connections in Eau Claire

2011-08-31 Thread Ken Anderson
I had new carpeting installed in my squad car today. Not sure if I ever

When I picked the car up there were two gentleman standing by it talking about
just that thing. So I guess I couldn't have taken it to a better place.
The owner of the shop is so proud of the fact that he gets to do work on it. He
sponsors many of the car shows that I attend and he represents

Mayberry on Eau Claire TV News

2011-04-06 Thread Ken Anderson
I had a very wonderful experience yesterday. One of our local TV stations,
WQOW, came to our house to do some taping and interviewing for a Mayberry piece
they are going to run next Monday night on their six o'clock news. The
reporter was really excited about doing a Mayberry story so he spent an hour
video taping all my Mayberry collections and especially the squad car. He
asked me numerous questions and had me demonstrate everything on the car. I
had to explain the significance of the one bullet and even had to demonstrate
taking my gun out of my holster. First question was whether or not I was a
Barney Fife impersonator, and I certainly set the record straight on that. I
was able to share my story of how I received my uniform from our own David
Browning and I was able to put in a nice plug for the Digest and of course the
Taylor Home Inn. He really enjoyed the Hawthorne Villages and taped my trains
traveling through Mayberry for quite a while too. He said the piece he was
planning would be about two minutes long on the nightly news but he wanted to
do a lot of taping and interviewing so he could do a good job of it. It will
be very interesting to see what he comes up with. I will post a link to the
video next week after it airs. I offered my video on the chicken trick but he
wasn't really interested in that. I suppose he figured it would take the edge
away from Mr. Food's Program.

Sharing of Mayberry in Eau Claire

2010-01-14 Thread Ken Anderson
I have been asked to give my Mayberry presentation at our city Sunrise
Exchange Club. It is an organization that raises funds for children's
projects in Eau Claire. It must be a branch of the Mayberry Underprivileged

the morning for their breakfast meeting. I think I will forgo my Barney
Fife uniform and look for a nightshirt and nightcap like Andy wore when he
was justice of the peace. It seems that would be more fitting so early in
the morning. I am also scheduled to present at the University of
Wisconsin - Eau Claire's 22nd Annual Senior America Day in March. I did
that event last year and had over 80 seniors attend, so I am looking forward
to it again this year. Now I have my Power-Point Presentation so I can
include some episode clips. My presentation is entitled What's Your Hurry
and I have about 100 slides that I have created. There are no Mayberry
Events here in our part of the state so it is always a joy and privilege
when I can share my love for Mayberry.

Eau Claire is not Mayberry

2008-04-08 Thread Ken Anderson
My subject line is an exact quote Eau Claire is not Mayberry used by a
local talk show host on one of our Eau Claire radio stations.
What precipitated the comment was the fact that a middle school teacher in
Eau Claire yesterday announced to five middle school classes that she is
gay. I do not want to start a debate, but I just thought it was interesting
how once again our beloved Mayberry entered into a very controversial
debate. Bottom line is: no place is Mayberry. There is one and only one
Mayberry and that is what makes it so special.

Mayberry Fun Time in Eau Claire

2007-01-19 Thread Ken Anderson
Once a month for the past two years I have been leading the Back to Mayberry
Bible Study at a large retirement apartment complex. I have gone through all
of the lessons so we thought we would be through last month. But I asked if
they would like me to keep coming once a month and just have a Mayberry
afternoon fun time. The residents overwhelmingly agreed to this. So I will
be continuing once a month. They want to watch an episode each time and
then have me read that particular reflection from my book. I am going to
take some of my collectibles each time to share with them and I have plans
to make up trivia games, take my Mayberry jigsaw puzzles, and just come up
with some good old fashioned Old Time Mayberry Fun. The average age of
the residents there is 83 and we have one lady who comes every time who is
92. Just thought I would share with you that Mayberry is alive and well in
Eau Claire. I am even going to take some rocks one time and show an episode
of Ernest T, and give them there own personal rock and I am going to paint
the name Ernest T. I have an old joke I tell people that I was a rock
singer when I was young. I tell them I would stand on a street corner and
sing and people would throw rocks at me.

Lots of luck to you and yours from me and mine.

Mayberry in Eau Claire, WI

2006-11-28 Thread Ken Anderson
I was listening to one of our local radio talk shows this morning and they
were discussing how times have changed and how difficult it is for young
people now days. The one host mentioned that even though Eau Claire is over
60,000 people we are in many ways just like Mayberry in that kids can still
do many of the same things the kids in Mayberry were able to do. I thought
this was a fine credit to our community and an even finer credit to
Mayberry. They went on to say that although we cannot reinvent Mayberry, it
is good to see our community like it in some ways. This was a very unusual
discussion for these two talk show hosts as they are usually very negative
and critical of all most anything. So it was a nice turnaround for their
discussion, and to think it took Mayberry to make it happen.

Barney's Visit to Eau Claire

2006-08-26 Thread Ken Anderson
Being summer is rapidly drawing to a close; I thought I would invite Barney
to Eau Claire to spend a week with me. I have an exciting week all planned
out, and I am sure he will enjoy his visit. I have a 1966 Chevy convertible
so I think one night I will get him a date. I have a single blonde neighbor
gal who is really a fun girl, so I thought we can go to our outdoor drive in
movie. On the way home we can drive down to Carson Park and look at the
ducks. I have a club meeting on Thursday night and I am hoping to put
Barney up for an honorary membership. We will go for the dinner first and
they can look him over. Hopefully they will serve their specialty,
California burger, that's a new sandwich that came out since California
became a state. I have a free coupon from Karate America for a free lesson,
so on Monday I hope to take Barney there and let him use it. If it is
really nice we may go golfing. I usually shoot around 80, so if Barney is
lucky he might even hit 90 and beat me. Boy that would really be something,
if old Barn could beat me, wouldn't it? Tuesday morning I have an
appointment at our bank to let Barney inspect their security system. They
just installed new alarms and a video camera. That should really make
Barney happy. On Tuesday night I plan to rent a doctor show video and my
wife is going to make a pan of cashew fudge. I hope that doesn't make
Barney too homesick. On Friday night we will go out to Smith's Country Inn
for a pounded steak dinner. It is located just off the highway outside of
Eau Claire. They have place mats on the table and cloth napkins. Fancy
fancy. I just hope Barney isn't disappointed because the waitresses don't
wear peek a boo blouses. I don't think they will let us take a bottle in
their either. On Saturday afternoon the Oakwood changes the movie marquee,
and with a ten screen theater, Barney should really enjoy watching them
change ten names. On the way though, I am going to have to avoid driving on
London Road. Every Saturday farmers come to town in their pick up trucks
and they sell their vegetables along that street. I wouldn't want Barney to
try and arrest them. But I will take him down to Phoenix Park where we have
a huge farmer's market, where the farmers are actually invited to come sell
their produce. Barney may have a bit of trouble understanding that. I do
hope Barney remembers to bring his Salt and Pepper, because on Saturday
night I am hoping to take him to our Arthur Murray dance studio for a free
dance lesson they offer. Sunday will be a quiet day. We will go to church
and then after dinner we will sit out on the patio. We will walk down to
the corner gas station after a while and get a bottle of pop and maybe pick
up some ice cream. We might go out to the mall too. They have an arcade
there with all kinds of games Barney might like. They even have a booth
where we can have our pictures taken, and they are guaranteed not to turn
yellow. All in all, I would think Barney is in for a great time. I can
hardly wait. But he did say something about bringing Cousin Virgil along,
and I am not too sure about that. I will report back to the digest and let
you know how things went with Barney's visit to Eau Claire.
