That's right; it's the medium, not the message. Thanks from

From: David Precious

Hi Linda,

Thanks for the reply.

Linda Cole wrote:
I'm afraid the best I can come up with is a password
protected area on a forum. You can set the forum
preferences to notify you by email when there is a post
to your subscribed threads, but you cannot reply by
email; you would have to visit the forum to post to it.

Talk it over and let me know what you decide to do. If
you should decide to set up a new list, please post back
here so everyone knows where to find you.

We did discuss the forum idea, and the general consensus
was overwhelmingly against, so I don't think the community
would survive if we take that route.

I think setting up a new list is the way to go, so I'll do
that soon; we just need a name.

You said using the wdvltalk name is out of the question,
so that's fine; I'm thinking of something like devtalk?

That would make the list devt...@lists.preshweb.co.uk,
unless we decide we'd rather register a domain for it.

Thoughts, people? Does devtalk work as a name for you?
If so, I'll create it, and send a mail to the list with
the subscribe page / address so we can all join it in good
time.

Cheers

Dave P

Works for me fine, Dave. I'll go with any concensus, so long
as it's a list.

sticking to what i had assumed was the simplest format at

Have you tried a php include? I believe you said you were

Hi Joseph,

PHPBB would do it (although there's been a few issues over the

Thanks Matt. I'd forgotten about BB, though I looked at it ages
ago when I understood less than at my peak ;-). Yahoo is a good

Can't put the price into https at the moment, though that might
be the best protection. I'll put BB on localhost and see if I

[wdvltalk] Fw: PHP - failure to pic up logo image in MediaWiki script

2008-11-10 Thread joseph harris
I am doing as little configuring as possible here
http://controlyourdebtcrisis.co.uk/debtwiki/index.php/Main_Page
but although I believe I have followed instructions I cannot get
the logo to appear. The holding image has disappeared, so I
assume the script is picking up the instruction in
LocalSettings.php.

Below are parts of the puzzle ;-).

What am I (inevitably) doing wrong?

Joseph Harris

Here the LocalSettings.php lines:
## To enable image uploads, make sure the 'images' directory
## is writable, then set this to true:
$wgEnableUploads   = true;
# $wgUseImageMagick = true;
# $wgImageMagickConvertCommand = /usr/bin/convert;
$wgfavicon =

$wgLogo =
'http://www.controlyourdebtcrisis.co.uk/debtwiki/images/archive/debtwiki
logo.gif';

[and the images are in the folder]

And this is from the page source:
div class=portlet id=p-logo
 a style=background-image:
url(http://www.controlyourdebtcrisis.co.uk/debtwiki/images/archive/debtwiki
logo.gif); href=/debtwiki/index.php/Main_Page title=Visit the

Brilliant both; I should have known! The rust is deep.

I have just changed a gif to png because the gif didn't show

/me drifts back through time and vaguely recalls something
about saving GIFs as GIF89a format for transparency...

Did you enable the transparency option when the GIF was
created?

If the PNG works, I'd stick with it for the time being! :o)

Yes Matt, thanks. I think my error in preparing was [in PhotoShop
5.5] to use the save for web instead of Image Ready. I did have
the transparency option ticked, but there is no '89a' choice in
that. Not only does png do it as a matter of course, but the
quality of the end product is far, far better.

I might have used the more modern Serif program, but that does
not permit the easy checking through the fonts that PS has.

[wdvltalk] Wikis on site

2008-11-04 Thread joseph harris

I am slowly working my way towards using a Wiki on my website,
and not transferring the blog from wordpress. This would enable a
body of more easily accessed information (I think). And that
would allow for a forum style approach to specific issues,
problems and questions.

Any comments on the comparative value of a wiki v blog [blog
pages in particular]; and recommendations of a script. My host
offers both DocuWiki and MediaWiki 4 or 5. I know there are
others.

As usual starting with one process I am caught in others before I
can complete the first! [And yes, I am very out of practice!]

I rather like DokuWiki, it's pretty simple and effective - it's
ideal for use for documentation (its main purpose) but could
also be used for a full site. See my install at
http://wiki.preshweb.co.uk/ for an example.

MediaWiki is the better-known though, hosting rather important
sites like http://www.wikipedia.org/ :)

Cheers

Dave P

Thanks Dave. I'll investigate those tomorrow. Wikipedia is
excellent, but has far more to it that I will need. For the
moment the simpler the better ;-).

I've gone back to 34sp for hosting, but even a shoestring would

but the way they put the ads now is jarring. If wwwToolz is
reliable and without virus etc I'd start there - or something
better if someone knows of it.

I think Joseph was looking more for mailing list hosting (i.e.
someone
to run Mailman or something) as opposed to web hosting. Do 34sp
provide

this?

Joseph: what kind of traffic are you expecting? i.e. how many
subscribers are there, and how frequently do messages go out?

Hi David,

Probably monthly as a regular posting, but also - since it
relates to ongoing matters - with any relevant news comments. I
suspect about two or three times a month for that.

Hopefully by the time the list gets to a thousand or two I'll be
placed to purchase a fuller service. As I have been 'going
through treacle' of late I'm not forecasting how long that will
take!

[wdvltalk] Browser woe - update

2008-09-24 Thread joseph harris
Well I've just worked out the SSI problem with Html-Kit. The
answer lies in options and in pre-listing the page in 'open
browser window'. At the moment it only works in IE, but that'll
do till I set up on the web and I can refine it.

[But don't ask what delays I have met setting up a simple
hosting]

Many thanks (to David in particular) for help.

Right. And it is a good question David - but I haven't
regressed that far ;-). Access is through the localhost server
thus http://127.0.0.1/control_your_debt/. The software is
Apache via the EasyPHP 2.0b1 bundle on dear old XpSP2. CSS is
picked up but on html, shtml files there is no SSI processing -
no error messages, no blank screen.

I don't know if the clue is in Firefoxe's refusal to parse
shtml, yet deigning to print the source in the main window. So
far as i know - and this is not recollection, but the file that
worked for this previous website - this is correct calling

!--#include file=zin-sub-form-goldblock1.txt-- and
!--include file=spw-tailpiece-sp.txt-- . These two [and

Riva,

I've just been banging my head against the wall. The problem is
no mystery [except to me at this moment!]. Neither browser is
picking up any SSI. It looks as though the css is working.

Since localhost is supposed to mimic grown up servers I am
assuming that Appache, php and MySQL are in fine fettle. But it
looks as though it is not picking up SSI on the Wordpress script
either, and that is a polished one.

This is starting to look like a EasyPHP issue and I'm wondering
if the fault is with the updated version - or just as usual my
own incompetence...

I can see I'll have to test on a host - it's just so much easier

Right. And it is a good question David - but I haven't
regressed
that far ;-). Access is through the localhost server thus
http://127.0.0.1/control_your_debt/. The software is Apache
via
the EasyPHP 2.0b1 bundle on dear old XpSP2. CSS is picked up
but
on html, shtml files there is no SSI processing - no error
messages, no blank screen.

Right - it sounds like Apache isn't configured to handle SSI
includes.

Assuming that you're using Apache 2 and the filenames you're
using for
HTML pages which include SSI calls use the extension .shtml,
you'll need
the following in Apache's httpd file:

   AddType text/html .shtml
   AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml

And, a suitable Options line including Includes (or
IncludesNoExec) -
in a Directory block etc.

Have a look at your Apache config file; it's likely that the
appropriate
options are there already, but just commented out.

I don't know if the clue is in Firefoxe's refusal to parse
shtml,

There's no such thing as shtml, and Firefox (or any other
browser)
doesn't know what SSI is; as far as the browser is concerned,
SSI calls
are just standard HTML comments to be ignored.

yet deigning to print the source in the main window.

This, to me, sounds like the webserver is serving .shtml files
with
Content-Type of text/plain rather than text/html.

Do you have anything like Tamper Data / Live HTTP Headers
Firefox
extensions installed which would let you see the Content-Type
header
that your server is sending?

If not, you could do it the manual way - use telnet to connect
to
localhost on port 80, then say:

HEAD /control_your_debt/ HTTP/1.0

Followed by two newlines.

Then look for a Content-Type header in the response.

So far as i

know - and this is not recollection, but the file that worked
for
this previous website - this is correct calling
!--#include file=zin-sub-form-goldblock1.txt-- and
!--include file=spw-tailpiece-sp.txt--

The first is mostly correct, although there should be a space
before the
-- at the end. The second is just a HTML comment.

You want:

!--#include file=filename --

.htaccess reads
AddType text/.html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes

Ah - this is what I was talking about above. It looks mostly
right, but
if it's Apache2, you'll want the AddOutputFilter INCLUDES
.shtml as I
described above, rather than the AddHandler server-parsed

Also, you might find that having those directives in a
.htaccess file
won't work; only certain directives are allowed in .htaccess
files, and
the directives that are allowed can be changed by settings in
the main
config file.

Cheers

Dave P

Hmmm. Now you have me tinkering where I know not... ;-)

OK so I've added Includes here [line 204 on mt httpd.conf in the
Appache config folder]
# The Options directive is both complicated and important.
Please see
   # http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/core.html#options
   # for more information.
   #
   Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes

And uncommented and added .php here [line 461/2]
# Filters allow you to process content before it is sent to the
client.
   #
   # To parse .shtml files for server-side includes (SSI):
   # (You will also need to add Includes to the Options
directive.)
   #
AddType text/html .shtml .php
AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml .php
/IfModule

Restarted the server

Ha! No change on my script and wordpress index.php won't even
appear - blank page. IE and Firefox

Restarted the machine, checkedthe file has been saved with
changes. Still no action as above. Getting mysterious - or
showing some inadequacy by localhost operator...

The logic of the chain of action is clear, and with your
instructions I can see how it should order the parsing.

If I can't sort this by the end of tomorrow I will abandon it.
Finding out the problem is just taking time. But if you have any
more ideas I'll try them with gratitude for your help.

Re: [Bulk] [wdvltalk] Browser woe -- so what's new?

2008-09-18 Thread joseph harris

Hi Riva,

It's pretty much what I show below, with a bit more content - all
text and a few h variants - which is pretty minimal. I am
between websites at the moment, though I am planning one as
quickly as I can make it. Which is why I'm quite alarmed by this
problem which just shouldn't be there. Is it possible that it is
because it's localhost?

Not, It's only on the desktop- I am making a usable site before I
get hosting. But it is a very simple page and based on one I had
in use up to the middle of last year. I'm wondering if there has
been a change in Firefox that makes it hard to read something so
simple;-). the firefox version is 2.0.016.

Ah! It reads it ok as .html [which is the file I thought I had
chosen], but only shows the code if .shtml! Which seems the wrong
way round.

I've added the rest of the coding below, and .htaccess reads:

Options +Includes

AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml
AddType text/html .shtml

And now the Wordpress folder [index.php] is showing the text
properly, but no other css is put in effect, nor images. I'm
sure that was working a couple of weeks ago. I'll do restart and
let you know if good old windows is its usual self...

[wdvltalk] shtml in firefox

2008-09-03 Thread joseph harris
I spent most of yesterday trying to download Zend Optimiser [and
finally still failed] to use what seemed an excellent template -
Wesbsite something or other. And gave up trying to find another
template that interested me.

So I have turned to using my own early css work and adapting it.
IE seems proud and happy to show the site and I have started
making the changes needed. However it seems unhappy with
Javascript. [I'm working on the desktop with EasyPHP]

The great Firefox merely shows the source! This is the document
statement !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0

Any thoughts?

[wdvltalk] shtml in firefox - update

2008-09-03 Thread joseph harris
Updating my problems. Zend Optimiser is as i stated. And firefox
is displaying source, instead of parsing.

But it seems that the SSI isn't working. I have statements like
!--#include file=other-links.txt-- and
!--#include virtual=site-links.txt-- for files in the same
folder as the calling file.
Like me, all simple stuff. And the page is index.shtml.

I've done an .htaccess file with [following
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/howto/ssi.html ]

Options +Includes
AddType text/html .shtml
AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml
AddType text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.htm

It all looks enabled in Apache [EasyPHP desktop]. Why won't the
includes parse - there are no error messages - and why is firefox
not even parsing the shtml?

Flummoxed!

Joseph

Tim responds:
First, try upgrading your doctype to this:

!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN
   http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd;

(see http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/sgml/loosedtd.html)

I don't think the 4.0 Transitional DTD is even valid anymore.

Secondly...IE will render happily whether or not the doctype is
correct, but FF is pretty choosy about it. JavaScript may not
work if the page is not completely loaded, depending on what it's
doing...so fix the doctype first, and see what happens from
there...

Tim

Hi Tim,

No, FF still prints only the source. IE still won't obey any
includes. The file is definitely saving.

I'm using HTML-kit lite [which seems no longer available] so
there shouldn't be any code problems on the files from the
program. And I see no EOE of my own .;-)

Yes, thanks. Part of the reminders I need.

Given programming experience, writing a custom system to do

I am again looking at PHP/MySQL since I should be able to

I fail to see the relevance between PHP+MySQL and CSS?

Ah... I could have phrased that better. The link is they are for

Joseph,
I don't know if this will work in your situation or not, but I've
had good luck using two different methods of restricting document
access.

1. Put the content in the database. Your regular PHP files can
check authentication and/or authorization, and if the appropriate
credentials are submitted, you can open a new browser window, set
the MIME type for the content, and copy the content to the new
window using PHP. This is a good solution for when you don't
have access to the server's file system outside your web space
(as in a hosted site).

JH writes: Yes,that appeals. Bit of rust to scrape off before
I'm fully clear, but I recall a while back Cheryl recommended
that for an earlier site of mine.

2. Put the content in a folder that's not in a web-servable
location. You can use PHP the same way to check credentials and
then open and copy the file line-by-line to a browser, but the
file itself should not be directly servable. This is good for
when you run your own servers or if you're accessing content on
other machines remotely.

JH writes: Yes, that makes sense too. This is a pdf so I'm not
sure how well it would fit this. But it might be good for other
ideas ahead.

Either way, you'll want your PHP to be pretty stout to protect
the content, but this way you don't have to worry about people
hacking the URLs and finding the files.

[wdvltalk] secure download for ebook

2008-08-04 Thread joseph harris

I am starting at the beginning again with planning a site, and
again this will be to do with selling a book, but it will also
contain a lot of other material and some sort of forum or, more
likely, a 'questions answered' newsletter.

I do not favour any DRM, but don't want the download page exposed
or available to non-payers. I am reluctant to think HTTPS, though
I know how sensible it is. But I was thinking that maybe [I am
using PayPal for payments] there was a way of linking the PayPal
transaction number to the download.

I have a feeling this was discussed some time ago, but have not
put my mind to the area for two or three years. Any guidance
would be welcome.

If you wanted to get a flavour of the direction of this I am
using http://debtcontrolman.Wordpress.com to develop some
thinking and initial marketing interest.

I am again looking at PHP/MySQL since I should be able to
remember it fairly easily, though I might stick to CSS1, since
the emphasis has to be on writing and marketing.

I am trying to delay setting up the website briefly, and wonder
if, apart from the laborious emailing of ebooks to purchasers,
there was some bright way to house the file for download.

I hae been doing a number of preparation things, but find
everytime a simple operation is ahead it turns into a labrynthine
struggle with time and sanity ;-). It has. for example. taken
most of the day just to check and update my PayPal account! In
fact, I have jsut remembered, I haven't finished...

Thanks for any help.

Joseph Harris

P.S. I would like to house all the articles in a wordpress folder
to enable comment, but don't like the convoluted was wp separates
them from the site links. I deas there would be nice too...

[wdvltalk] database woes

2008-06-23 Thread joseph harris
I was clearly born fairly stupid and have been completing my
education...

I have just updated ClipGuru into the existing folder and
realised that the list of clip sets has disappeared from the
application window [ie I can't access them or they are gone for
ever]. There is however a database of 589kb that I suspect
contains the information.

It is not on this computer and I don't know - or how to find
out - what kind of db it is. Has anyone a kind word and a crumb
of comfort?

I am short of devastated but very unhappy that what had turned
into a useful reference for a current project was in the clip
sets.

Update news of a result.

The problem seemed to be mine; Clipguru [which is a very good
clipboard extension] is available as standalone and as installed.
I installed the update, but think I must have put the earlier
version as standalone.

In standalone the db is with the application, but installed it is
put in application data. So the db existed but the program was
looking elsewhere for its information. My solution is to put a
copy in application data, though I could have altered the .ini
file.

Thanks for your offer David.

It looks a lot like DNS problems, as I originally suspected.
OE can still work as it's already resolved the hostname of your
ISP's mail server, so it knows the IP already, and doesn't have
to re-query the DNS server.

It would appear that you have the DNS server configured to be
192.168.1.1, which will be your gateway (the ADSL router) -
that's probably configured for you by DHCP.

It might be worth forcing the DNS servers on the machine in
question to use specific ones, perhaps the OpenDNS
(www.opendns.org) servers.

Out of interest, do other machines on your network use the
gateway as a DNS server too? Do they exhibit the same problems
at the same time, or do they continue to be able to resolve
names?

There's nice instructions at https://www.opendns.com/start to
change the DNS settings.

Cheers

My Dell Inspiron 1300 likes sending and downloading mail via
broadband, indeed almost chortles with delight. However after a
short time [hours to a day] it yawns and ignores all requests to
access webpages, pretending a cable is unplugged, even while it
merrily downloads, uploads and investigates mail.

I suspect his has to do with ports and consequent docker
(stevedore) strikes. However I cannot see how to sort this out.
Of course, your experience may tell me there is osme other
fault - browsers IE, Firefox and Opera are all in on this
conspiracy.

Windows IE diagnostic usually claims a wire is unplugged, even
while mail is downloading!

Many thanks as always for any help.

Re: [wdvltalk] Rights with a non paying client...?

2008-04-07 Thread joseph harris

From: Tris

Hi all..
I just finished a monthly rolling contract with a client that
lasted

15 months, or there abouts.
Each month was a fight to get paid, but they relented, because
I was
on-site and near the accounts department (close enough to hound
them

often enough to be annoying I think).

Anyhoo, I'm gone now and my penultimate invoice is now late.
(bit of a worry, as I was counting n that to pay my VAT bill,
live and learn).
Anyhoo, I still have back door access to their MySQL server and
could
feasibly delete, edit, and generally make a mockery of their
database

for several major clients.

Naturally, I'm aware that this will not get my money any
faster... if
at all, but I did think that why don't I go and delete the data
that I

added that was connected with the work I did while I was there?
Make a back up and restore it all when I'm paid.
There was never a signed contract between us, so I was
wondering if I
can claim that under my own freelance terms etc, the work is
owned by
me, until payment, regardless of the fact that they might feel
they

own all code/data etc...

It all seems very shaky ground to be honest, but I'm driven by
the

fact that I know they have no backups.

Thoughts, advise... your own horror stories welcome...

I'm at the end of my tether and my last ditch attempt is to go
to the
office tomorrow and simply sit and wait til they pay me... but
I was

kinda hoping to enjoy my unemployment for a few weeks...! ;-p

Ok, let me know..

Tris...

Tris,

There is an agreement. It may not be written, but the courts in
the UK and the US recognise oral contracts. The question is
what have you, in the way of remembered converstaions setting up
the deal, in the way of letters of emails or memos to back up
your concept of what the agreement is?

Primarily you have the situation of being paid at a time related
to your work and the end of the relevant month. There has
clearly never been any complaint about your work, which makes any
failure to pay actionable.

Going to law is a tiresome and negative experience. However,
unless you know these people to be ligitigatious, it is well
worth consulting a solicitor just to know where you stand and
whether you would be able to claim worthwhile damages for breach
of contract - ie not paying on time.

I forget if you are UK or US based but I think there is still an
offer in the UK to consult at a very reasonable fee for a first
halfhour session. [I remember £5 but I have no idea how long
ago that was ;-)] It may be a that a letter from a bright
solicitor who clearly hears what you say and understands might be
money well spent.

If they know you mean business they might act quickly for fear of
your doning PR damage by making their behaviour public. Unless
you certainly own the work not paid for it would not be the best
move to interfere with it now. Again a good solicitor would
know. Might be worth contacting the Law Society for a list of
solicitors who do contract law.

Good luck with your efforts.

No worries! I'm not sure where you are located and what you have
available
in terms of outlets. In the states, I recently helped my sister
purchase an
HP laptop from Best Buy with a 200+GB hard drive, Windows Vista
(not my
favorite) and 2GB of memory. It was right about $849 (before
taxes and an
extra warranty). I was actually pleased with how well it ran.
If you want
XP, then you might have to get from Dell or someplace like that,
where you

can still order with XP.

Todd

Todd,

That makes the prices look similar across the current exchange
rate [depending on parts quality of course]. I had been hearing
good things of HP. She will not touch Vista ;-) so Xp it is.
There are one or two places tht offer it still beside Dell,
though I have bought from them 3 times and think they give good
value for the money.

I've found service good too when my monitor went on the blink
there was a replacement overnight from Ireland and instant return
for the old monitor, so minimal hassle.

I see M$ has cut th price of Vista - I wonder what that says...
;-)

Re: [wdvltalk] Kaspersky problems - or maybe not... maybe!

2008-02-28 Thread joseph harris

Hi Drew, thanks for the response.

We've chased around finding what we can, but nothing tht gives
answers; or rather we have only come across answers that suggest
days of correction work or a complete reinstall of the OS.As
to duelling that is possible but the two had sat happily together
for about six months of more or less daily use, so it is not an
obvious answer, unless some update has started an
incompatibility. There wasn't active multiple AV; ZA was the
firewall and K the AV.

The isp was reached by old-fashioned dial-up, and was clearly
enganged. But whatever was tried there was no sending activity
[and so of course no receiving either].

Your new machine remedy looks right, though switching completely
to K suite hasn't worked - tht sugggests to me that there is some
major disturbance in setting s and files' content. A different
new machine executive action has emerged ;-): buy a new laptop.
She's been unhappy with this one for ages, so it seems a good
moment...

Maybe I'll use this one to test out linux [down Matt, boy, down]
and see if we can work with that. We're completely off the
experiment of Vista, don't use Word or Works.

It has already wasted a tremendous amount of time and energy and
I really would only pursue correcting the problem if there is a
relatively simple solution. I also suspect so much has been
tried that things are very fouled up. Of course there were no
discs with this machine for reinstall and troubleshooting!!

Joseph

From: Drew Trusz [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Have you checked their respective knowledge bases yet? Forums?

Do we have a case of dueling tools here? ZA Pro also includes av.
Was
the entire Pro suite operational? How was the isp reached?
Browser?

ftp client?

Treat this like it was a new machine never before networked.
Check all
the basic configurations including browser settings and mail.
Install
ZA Pro as it was installed. If you don't know that, do the
default

install paying careful attention to what is installed. If that
restores connectivity beyond the isp, try the Kaspersky again.
If

not, got a backup copy?

If the problem recurs then you are going to have to disable some
parts
of one or the other products until you get a workable
arrangement.

Multiple av still seems a dicey proposition.

From: Peter MacGregor
We've heard the Chairman of the Revenue resigned
yesterday - but what about the idiot that did this in the first
place?

Has he or she been fired? None of the news
bulletins I've heard have mentioned this.

I know that in the Civil Service you don't
usually get fired for incompetence - just moved
to another department to repeat your stupidity in
some other way and eventually draw an indexed
linked pension at the taxpayers expense - but
surely this is so serious that a termination of
employment with no hope of reinstatement in
government employment EVER is the only way we -
the public - can be assured it really is being
taken seriously? In Private Enterprise I doubt
the Unions would even attempt to mount a case for
wrongful dismissal in such an instance as there
really is no defence - the individual apparently
blatantly ignored procedures with devastating results.

Another thought going through my mind -
apparently the National Audit Office asked this
person for the data. Was any check made that it
really was the NAO asking? Or was it some con
artist that has now got away with the biggest
data con in history so far? And what of TNT? They
apparently transported this - what have they to say for
themselves?

Peter MacGregor

Peter,

Good rant... But...

If my ears and eyes got it right the blame lies with friend
Gordon and Alisatair 'Look What I Found Under the Rock' Darling,
a.k.a. 'It's Your Money I'm After'. ['Course Newsnight ain't
what it was, but 'Stuffit' Paxman was in full flow ;-)]

A. The professor who is chief advisor on IT to the Goverment
said in front of the financial secretary to the treasury 'It was
a disaster waiting to happen' because of the continuing accretion
of data and inadequate security. And he named three reports
brushed aside by Gordon and his puppet Alistair '25 billion - Now
You See it, Now You Won't' Darling. I assume this honest man
will be found with aspirin spread about in his local wood.

B. The fact that it is still not clear how this disaster
happened means there is no proper procedure for accessing or
copying this information.

C. To cut everyone's costs but those of MPs our friend Gordon
allowed his big mate Rupert 'the bear that hugs all to himself'
to have the contract to transport items round governemnt. And
presumably with no special system for sensitive matter.

D. There is no one to sack among civil servants since it is
fairly obvious that the data was acquired to order and the TNT
staff involved were waiting to receive a marked package and all
the individuals involved in perpetrating the deed are either
sunning themselves in Marbella, or rotting in the foundations of
a recently started building!

E. Every Brit with children should already have changed their
bank accounts, even if with the same bank.

Oh! And just to put the cherry on the icing of the compôte of
this particular disaster, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury
seemed unable to comprehend why this might make people a little
bit wary about another massive database for identity cards.

Bring Back the Romans!

Thanks for the link to the timeline.

Looks like a bit of a mess. We've had several similar
incidents on this

side of the pond.

Data security is tough when the storage media are so portable

neglect to think about security.

Ann

Ann,

The reason this is creating such a storm - apart from the
sensitivity and the amount of the data involved - is the
failures; not a matter of neglect.

There have been three important reports about the measures that
must be taken, and the Treasury - which is in control of this
area - has assured everyone again and again that systems are in
place.

The Minister in charge of the Treasury for the last ten years,
and the one who drove all the reforms that appear to have caused
the weaknesses, is our own dear new leader, Gordon Brown, though
his puppet, Alistair Darling looks as though he will carry the
can.

The government's own chief IT advisor last night on tv, in front
of the No3 at the Treasury, called it a disaster waiting to
happen. That's tough talk from a hireling - even if only part
time.

This is really exactly what one expects from the management of

Hi Joseph

MagicISO
is able to open these files (allegedly)

Sorry I haven't had a chance to look around properly yet but if

Dan,

Thanks very much for your trouble. I've now got diskmanager but
it keeps telling me these are not valid M(X)-DOS files!! It has
done the same to some .dsk copies that I found on an old CD.

I'm just flummoxed. Should I use DSKMGR via the command line,
and if so how? ;-(.Or is there just something odd about
these files. I note that though the zips are different sizes
all the .dsk results are 140kb, on both sets of files!

If I could code - if I had the time - if I knew what I was doing
;-) - I suppose I could make them work under Windoze...

ah! dream on...

It sounds to me like your zip program spanned the
files when zipping. Try putting them all in one
folder and unzipping them into that folder. That
should give you all your files and then you should be able to
install.

[wdvltalk] Windows Installer -again

2007-10-15 Thread joseph harris

Just over a month ago I had trouble with windows installer and
followed Ross's advice below. Yesterday I installed a program

I'll follow Ross's advice again, but any ideas why this is
happening?

Oh! Oh! Oh! Just did it and I'm still getting 'the windows
installer service could not be accessed'.Any further
thoughts?

[wdvltalk] windows, linux, Mac

2007-09-25 Thread joseph harris
These are some rem, arks from someone who does not know how *not*
to be contentious - however he is often right! any comments on
these opinions? [take the Windows bit as read ;-)]

Why do I run a Mac? Because it combines the best of Unix/Linux
security and functionality with hardware and multimedia (mpg,
swf, ppt, pdf, etc.) With the Mac everything works out of the
box. With Linux almost everything works out of the box, except
the one, two or
three things you really NEED to work, and with that you have to
have root canal before it DOES work (but it will eventually if
you fight with it long enough!)

It is nice to have a common platform that other share. Your BMW
is just like the other guy's BMW so it is easy to get help. With
Linux, there are a million varieties and everyone has different
hardware. You have two Linux users and three opinions!

With the Mac I get to ask ... (and any other user has the same
answer).

Since I last installed a program a few days ago Windows Installer
has stopped doing its job - the message is that it is either
corrupted or missing or that Xp is in safe mode. Windows
unhelpful Help has instructions for using the Command Prompt,
which I do not like using...

I have restarted twice - Xp is not in safe mode.

I cannot find the appropriate action to take on the Dell discs.

Has anyone any advice, suitable to my rather nervous feel about
tinkering too much?

Re: [wdvltalk] Site Check Please

2007-08-22 Thread joseph harris

From: Peter MacGregor
I'd appreciate comments on www.healthandsafetyformicrofirms.com
if anyone has time.

There is no checkout at the moment and we're still uploading
data and tidying up some of the data but some initial reactions
please. You need to register to get inside the site but at the
moment you can do that at no cost - ignore the cost that it
shows if you register, it goes nowhere! I'll delete all names
from the database before we go live in a few weeks.

Tens of thousands of small firms in UK have no HS system even
though it is a legal requirement. (Must be in writing if there
are five or more employees). Most think it is too costly to
bring in professional help to set one up - this is an attempt
to tap that market.

Thanks for any comments - good bad or indifferent!

Regards

Peter MacGregor
PS - the ads are purely for testing purposes at this stage!

Peter,

If you are part educating to the fact of responsibility should
the first line of text to meet the eye be:

'Are you meeting your legal Health and Safety responsibilities?
Your answers are here.'

What the hell is a 'microfirm'? One that makes computer chips?
;-) i.e. are you speaking to fellow consultants or small
business owners and club secretaries?

In the pink slab too, drop micro.

The more I'm reading the more I think you need to spend a penny
or two and get an ad/sales/marketing writer to sharpen this up.
It is a description, but not a sales tool. I'm no expert that
way, but I am picking up changes needed every half sentence.

Those you are addressing are not going to be the same people who
attend conferences, or who spend half their life on courses.
They won't have the 'bizspeak'.

Layout and colour seems to me good and easy to follow. I am not
sure that the right hand column has the right list; or maybe it
needs an intro of a dozen or so words. 'Everything your
organisation does is subject to Health and Safety law. Here is
a list of many aspects to be checked.'

Sorry, can't spend time inside the site, but this is the page
that should get people to stay.

Re: [wdvltalk] Which language to use? - Linda?

2007-02-21 Thread Joseph Harris
What I can't work out with these automatic responses is why -
since it is sent to the responder from the list - it sends these
messages to the original sender and not to the list, which has
become the immediate sender; if any of that makes sense!

And thenHit reply and although that goes to the list the
info is of the original sender.   That still doesn't answer it;
the list remains the reply address. One makes effort to extract
the original sender's address if there is a need to use it.

Well digits to the world - I mean here's to the digital world.

[wdvltalk] [OT] Biiiig files in temp folder

2007-01-26 Thread Joseph Harris
Having just acquired an enormous program dealing with keywords
[18hours dial up download !!] I have been sorting out the space
on the hard drive.

In Windows\Temp is $07E619A4.t$m 0.75Gb, $RZEC.AVG 0.68Gb, and
$VENB.AVG 0.5Gb - taking up nbearly 2Gb vetween them!! They are
so big I can't get anything to open them...

I assume temp means temp, but this is Windows ;-). Does anyone
know for certain if I can delete without worry? It looks as
though AVG's data is in its own folder, though .t$m is mystifying
[though the $ presumably relates to M$ ;-).

[wdvltalk] [OT] Firefox, extensions and multiple windows

2007-01-25 Thread Joseph Harris
Firefox is again aping the Sorcerer's Apprentice, and re-opening
with more windows than it had when it closed. Then I solved it
by taking all the add-ons out of Thunderbird, and have abandoned
Thunderbird (it is still on the machine but has no extensions of
its own).

I found 'Down them all' was in my extensions though I don't
recall downloading it. I find there are 31 extensions on the
list and I have just disabled 'email notifier', 'down them all'
and 'AJAX Yahoo'. Does anyone know of this strange behaviour
and what the right corrective is?

TIA

Re: [wdvltalk] Fw: [OT] Paypal verification

2007-01-20 Thread Joseph Harris
Thanks Bj. Now I recall something about letting them know about
a small payment to my account.

Joseph

From: Bj [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think it involves checking your bank account statement until
you see a payment of $1 credited from PayPal. At that point you
can go back to the PayPal site and enter the reference number of
this payment, and that verifies your bank details are correct

Obviously this is quicker and easier if you have online banking
than waiting for a paper statement...

[wdvltalk] [very OT] yahoo email size

2006-12-27 Thread Joseph Harris
Can anyone explain how yahoo has managed, in creating a middling
to poor ad medium out of its groups' mails, managed to make the
mails a ridiculous 17k or thereabouts? That's a lot of dial-up
time for a busy list! [Alright broadbanders, stop smirking!]

It is not as if there is much meat in the mails. A set of
tables/ positionings (?) and a bit of blue background with some
links.

Do these mails now contain any nasties?

Re: [wdvltalk] OT: uninstalling McAfee from a new machine

2006-12-03 Thread Joseph Harris

From: PBC Web Design

At 01:04 PM 12/3/2006, you wrote:

Hi Deb,

It being Sunday I might be your best bet...

My Dell with Xp Home came with wretched McAfee, which I have
never got on with [nor but i won't bore you ;-)]. As I
recall I disabled McAfee [with its 'six month free - a lifetime
of cost'], and left it sitting in the machine gnashing its
teeth.

On the other hand I am not sure why you can't use the uninstall
wizard, it should take out all that important stuff - leaving
just enough in the registry to keep nagging ;-). The wizard
should uninstall itself after its done the Macbeth bit!

And I think I installed both Zone Alarm and AVG before I even
disabled McA, switching it off every time it raised its big
business deal head.

Hi Joseph,

It won't even let me install my Norton System Works w/o
throwing me a warning to uninstall the McAfee first and I'm not
even going to use the Norton AV. I just use some of the tools
in the suite. It's not an uninstall wizard in the program list
or anything it's actually listed in the Control Panel
Add/Remove programs as uninstall wizard so I'm afraid what
I'd be doing is uninstalling the uninstall feature but I can't
find an uninstall w/in the program. Every time I open it up to
look it wants me to set it up.

:: Deb | PBC Web Design
:: http://www.PBCWebDesign.com

Deb,

Why don't you activate the uninstall wizard? That should take
McAfee out. If the uninstall wizard is still there afterwards
you can use the 'add/remove' function on it.

Some of these programs are very sticky and make their threatening
noises, but at worst one can just take the folder out and stamp
on it ;-).I've not made serious use of it, but the roll-back
thing - what's it called? - System Restore gives you a way to go
back in time ;-), so if you make an error it is correctable. I
think setting up restore points is fairly simple.

I imagine the 'Media' version is just heavy on meadia programs,
rather than working in a substantially different way to other Xp
variants.

As I said McAfee gives me gyp, but then so does Norton

Why not plan some easy and not-very-important change in the whole
set up and test System Restore. Once you are confident with
that you can experiment with getting McAfee out, knowing you can
go back to your starting point.

Perry,

How far this answers you I don't know, but you will have noted my
request over almost the exactly same problem. For my daughter
this has been resolved.

It appears that after turning off and making a number of
unsucessful attempts to restart - the machine citing 'Desktop
Active' [or Desktop X?] she abandoned it.

Returning to the machine the following day it has started with
add-ons working but Desktop Active [or X] now not.

I read earlier posts about how to enable IE7 add-on but either I
don't understand the instructions or something is not loaded
right for me.
I have downloaded IE7 and upon launch the browser blurps and
indicates that Internet Explorer is running with add-ons
disabled. Checking under toolsInternet OptionsProgramsManage
Add-ons I can see that the status of all add-ons is Enabled.
Clicking on a listed add-on activates a set of radio buttons
that allows me to choose Enable or Disable. I've gone
through all add-ons and clicked them back and forth making sure
they all are enabled. Closing and relaunching IE repeatedly
only results in continuing to run with add-ons disabled. Is
there something I'm missing, or something flaky with my IE7
download?

Thanks,

It sounds as if your daughter didn't actually enable the
add-ons.
First part of enabling is to click on the Enable or disable
Add-ons
choice. This does the enabling. A reboot is reuired then the
Manage
add-ons selection works. This seems counterintuitive but much
of t he
security enhancements you see as an end user in Vista (and IE7
as
designed for Vista) have a certain counterintuitive element
about

them.

Favorites are still there, use the star on the left, that

favorites, history, etc. She would probably feel more at home
with her menus

back. Tools | Menu bar.

From both a security and a make life easier for web designer
point of view
staying with IE 7 and getting over the (really it is) minor
adjustments
would be best since right now you can rollback but MS is
trying to get IE 6

into the history bucket as quickly as possible.

There is a site for customizing IE 7 that I sadly did not
bookmark that has
ways to move the menus back the way they used to be as well
without using a
registry key. If you can't find it I'll ask where it was
posted before.

Many thanks MOU, the first looks the most interesting
possibility. I'll pass this on. I've noted your praise for
IE7...

And thanks rudy for the link; I'll check that myself as I
imagine I'll need it too ;-).

From: Ross Clutterbuck

Three options Joseph:

1: Turn on IE7's full interface to reinstate the old-school
menu bars and such to get it working like IE6 (because even
though I hate myself for saying this, IE7 is actually a lot
better and moderately more secure than IE6) and tell the young
lady to live with it (as punishment for blindly clicking OK
buttons ;-) )

2: If IE7 was installed as an update you should be able to
remove it using Add/Remove programs - it's certainly in my
list. And I think you can still download the IE6 installer from
the IE site.

3: Install and get her using Firefox 2 - it's functions just
like IE6, and you can even disable tabbed browsing if she hates
it.

Re: [wdvltalk] Paper sizes

2006-11-24 Thread Joseph Harris

From: Portman

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the dimensions are for legal size
paper? Is it 8.5x 11.75? If so, how is that different than an
A4 size paper? Excuse the ignorance.

Thanks,
Riva

Riva,

There are as many paper sizes as there are people to cut the reel
up [well, maybe not...]

There are two main systems the metric [may it wither and die] and
the imperial or english or American with ancient and quaint
descriptions (I wrote a poem about that!).

The mertric is so logical it is totally unfitted for humans, and
the imperial is so illogical it is not suited to the age ;-).
IN the metric the A4 -8.25 x 11.75 (as John pointed out 210mm
by 297mm ) is pretty standard now for office and legal and so on
in Europe and now even, due to our namby-pamby politicians, in
Britain.

But 'Legal' is 8.5 x 14 and 'Tabloid' is 11 x 17. Do you
want to know about 'elephant' and 'eagle'? [Hey, I could do a
poem about a legal eagle and his double size sheet?]

[wdvltalk] [OT -2] Firefox reduced to ashes

2006-11-13 Thread Joseph Harris
What I like about Firefox is the tabs and the holding of those
tabs across crashes, etc. Vital info reliably and lazily held.

However... Firefox is showing new behaviour.I had five or
six windows with maybe 40 tabs between them. Then with a
'start' Firefox opened duplicates and I had 9 windows; then 15,
then more and more to well over 50 with a comensurate multiple of
tabs, all trying to access the web at the same time.

The effect was to completely jam the machine [Xp SP2, Dell]. Is
there a solution which a) saves the information or b) loses the
information but does not involve re-installing.

Or should I go to he newest Firefox, Vista is it?

Yours, M$-ered,

Joseph - Oh! And can you please copy your reply to

[wdvltalk] Fw: [OT -1] mail oddity

2006-11-13 Thread Joseph Harris
Alright it's OE! But I have had problems logging in to my main
mail account which has no web front end, and I have cursed - at
various levels of severity - my ISP [from whom the address
cometh] which has been going through travails, including takeover
by Biscit.

Recently I acquired a copy of Chrysanthemum to cut the spam and,
now I have remembered the password, it seems able to connect when
OE can't or won't.

Any ideas what may be happening?

TIA

Joseph - AND, because this is the address for wdvl-talk, could
you copy replies to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
