[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2024: Submission deadline extended

2024-04-02 Thread wpedzich
Dear all,

I am observing the inflow of programme submissions for Wikimania 2024 and I
could not be a happier programme lead than now. However, I know that there
are some session proposals that are still being developed, so we are
extending the deadline to submit your programme proposals until April 10,
2024, 12:00 UTC.

Make it the most memorable learning experience with other Wikimedians by
submitting sessions that are relevant to the Wiki-world and which bring the
Collaboration of the Open, this year's spirit, to Katowice, Poland, and
online!

collaborations across regions, languages, disciplines, and beyond? How are
you and your community contributing to building the open ecosystem?

demonstration that helps us all see the power of openness and collaboration.
You can apply to speak in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format. More

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2023 Evaluation Report

2024-02-08 Thread Butch Bustria
Hello everyone,

I am writing to share with you the evaluation report for Wikimania 2023,
Wikimedia movement's largest activity, which took place virtually and in
person in Singapore, in August 2023. The report covers results from the
attendee and scholar surveys, as well as the impact of our communication,
social media and media strategies.

The report was written by a team of colleagues from the Wikimedia
Foundation Communications department, and you can find it here:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2023:Evaluation

Here is a brief summary of the main findings:

- Wikimania 2023 was the largest Wikimania to date, with 2866 Wikimedians
from 142 countries attending - 761 in person and 2105 remotely.
- The theme for the 18th Wikimania edition was Diversity. Collaboration.
Future., reflecting the goals and challenges of the Wikimedia movement in
the next decade, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Survey respondents were highly satisfied with the event (over 90%), and
felt that it contributed to their learning and sense of belonging (over
90%).
- Scholarship recipients felt that the experience would encourage them to
share lessons learnt with their communities and continue to improve their
overall contributions to the movement.
- Communications strategies were utilized to raise awareness about
Wikimedia amongst youth in ESEAP, as well as the general public in the
region and beyond.
- Wikimania 2023 featured a rich and diverse program, with over 300 main
program sessions, the first ever WikiWomen Summit, a 5-day hackathon,
Wikimedia Basic workshops for beginners, and more.

I hope you enjoy reading the report and learning more about the outcomes
and impact of Wikimania 2023. Please feel free to share your feedback,
comments, and questions on the report's talk page:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=2023_talk:Evaluation

Thank you for being part of this amazing event and community!

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2024 Scholarships Open: Apply Now!

2023-11-15 Thread Käbi Laan

**

*Scholarship applications for Wikimania 2024 are open until December 18!
Apply now for a full or partial scholarship to attend Wikimania in
person in Poland! *

*

This year’s theme will be “Collaboration of the Open”--a celebration of
the ways we work together, in the open and for the larger open movement,
to bring free knowledge to the world. We are working on finalizing the
venue and dates before the end of the year, but can confirm that
Wikimania will be held in Poland sometime between mid-July and mid-August.

To ensure that Wikimedians needing visas for Poland have enough time to
apply, we are starting the scholarships process now. Scholarships will
be available in two forms:

 *

   Full scholarship: travel, accommodation, and registration are provided;

 *

Partial scholarship: accommodation and registration are provided.

Apply for a Wikimania 2024 scholarship now!
Make sure to
share your experiences during your Wikimedia movement journey and
support with links. Newcomers are encouraged to apply–this year we are
aiming for newer generations of Wikimedians and those who work on
connecting the Wikimedia Movement to the wider open ecosystem of
knowledge and culture.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship is December 18, end of the day
anywhere in the world. Applicants will be notified of decisions in the
first half of February.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2024 will be hosted in …

2023-03-20 Thread phoebe ayers
Hello everyone,

I am very excited to share that Wikimania 2024 will be hosted in the city
of Kraków in Poland ! [1] Kraków
had a strong submission

with a collaborative design and an experienced, enthusiastic team
supporting it [2]. At the crossroads of history, culture, and technology,
we are confident that the impact of Wikimania will be great for our
projects, the movement in general, and especially, local communities in the
Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. Read more on Diff

[3].

Bringing our movement’s beloved event to life is not simple and we took
many criteria into consideration. We were grateful for the expressions of
interest

received for hosting Wikimania in 2024, 2025, and beyond [4]. Announcing
host cities this far in advance is a new approach

to organizing Wikimania we are exploring [5]. In addition to the support we
provide as the stewards of Wikimania
, together with the
Foundation’s Movement Communications team
,
we see great value in facilitating more time for organizers so they can
learn from each other in practice and strengthen their capacity [6], [7].
We hope to announce the hosts of Wikimania in 2025 and 2026 in the coming
months or at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore.

Once again, wholehearted congratulations to the 2024 Wikimania team. We
know you will do an excellent job welcoming our global family to your
timeless city. And to our global family, we hope that you are as excited as
we are returning to the vibrant CEE region after 14 years. Looking forward
to collaborating with you all on wiki and in person.

My best wishes for all,

Phoebe (Wikimania Steering Committee)

 for
Wikimania 2023. Whether in person in Singapore or online wherever you are,
pre-recorded or live, an interactive workshop, panel discussion, lecture,
lightning talk or an awesome poster, submissions close *Tuesday, March 28.*

Take a look at more than 90 submissions (
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimania_2023_Program_submissions)
already received, perhaps you’ll discover an opportunity to collaborate
with a fellow Wikimedian. If you have any questions, we’d be happy to
answer them at our upcoming conversation hour this *Sunday March 19* at
00:00 and 14:00
UTC. You can also reach out
to us on the help page ,
our official email address *wikima...@wikimedia.org
* or on Telegram (https://t.me/wikimaniachat) .
All the information you need is available on wiki
. Making a
submission is easy and we encourage each of you to create one … if you
haven’t already.

The theme for this year's Wikimania is *Diversity, Collaboration, Future*,
and there are 11 tracks
 to
choose from: familiar ones like Community Initiatives, Governance, GLAM, or
Technology; and new ones like Open Data and Wild Ideas.

Looking forward to reading yours. To submit a program proposal, go to *this

2023-01-12 Thread Wikimania
Hello everyone,

Scholarship applications for Wikimania 2023 are now open until Sunday, 5
February! Wikimania 2023 will be held in Singapore from 16–19 August. This
year, we aim to be inclusive for Wikimedians worldwide in line with this
edition’s theme: “Diversity. Collaboration. Future.”

Scholarships for Wikimania 2023 are available in different types for
traveling to Singapore:

   -

   Full scholarship: travel, accommodation, and registration are provided;
   -

Partial scholarship: accommodation and registration are provided.

All scholarship recipients are covered by Wikimedia Foundation Travel
Insurance Policy.

Whereas scholarship recipients have historically written a report to
fulfill scholarship requirements, this year they will have the opportunity
to do volunteer tasks during Wikimania. The Committee will work with
recipients to find a volunteer role that suits each recipient’s skills and
experience. Scholarship recipients opting to volunteer rather than write a
report will be asked to volunteer for 2 hours over the course of Wikimania,
with the option to volunteer more hours if desired.

Apply now! Make sure to
share your experiences during your Wikimedia movement journey and support
with links. Newcomers to Wikimedia will be considered. The deadline to
apply for a scholarship is 5th February, end of the day anywhere in the
world. Applicants will be notified of decisions in May.

Read more on Wikimania Wiki
.

Have questions? You can reach the Scholarships Committee directly at

Best,

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania Hackathon: Thanks for coming!

2022-08-14 Thread Haley Lepp
Dear Wikimania Hackathon Attendees,

It was a pleasure spending the weekend hacking with you! I hope you had as
much fun as I did playing with WikiData games, learning about clever ways
to improve medical data on wikis, exploring Wikimedia Cloud Services, and
engaging with all the other cool projects and sessions.

If you missed the final showcase, it was recorded! You can watch it on
YouTube.

The playlist of recorded sessions is also available. <
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3soxkz-0_y6xOBqgWuZXv4ZrGJTghXIA>

There’s also information about all the projects on the Wikimania wiki. If
you didn’t get the chance to present, you can still add your project there.

Finally, please consider giving feedback on the event! If you have ideas,
things you liked, or things you’d like to see changed, this is your chance
to share that so we can improve in the future. <

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2022 local events (are you planning to attend?)

2022-05-27 Thread Iolanda Pensa
Dear all
I’m preparing a proposal for a Wikimania 2022 local event and it would be very
useful to get some feedback from the community if people are interested in
attending from other countries.

Here you find the current list of proposals/drafts for Wikimania local events
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2022/Scholarships#Proposed_applications

I am proposing Esino Lario - in the north of Italy above Lake Como, where
Wikimania took place in 2016 - for a two-days festival in the weekend of August
13th and 14th, with a light program of activities (you find Esino among the
draft applications).

I am noticing that it is difficult to plan the activities/needs/budget without
knowing if also people from other countries are interested; so I thought of
posting here the list of locations. I think looking at the list is also a fun
way to plan your holidays ;-)

All the best

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2022 Core Organizing Team (COT)

2022-02-25 Thread Iolanda Pensa
Dear Wikimedia Community Members,

We are happy to announce the Core Organizing Team (COT) for Wikimania 2022!

This year’s Core Organizing Team members are:
Anton Protsiuk, Antoni Mtavangu, Evelin Heidel (Scann), Houcemeddine Turki
(Csisc), Kayode Yussuf (Kayusyussuf), NANöR, Omar David Sandoval Sida
(Omar_sansi), Richard Knipel (Pharos), Sandra Aceng, and Venus Lui [1].

This talented group of volunteers from around the world was selected from more
than 70 excellent applications. They will work with you over the next six
months to organize our annual flagship event, designing a Wikimania that brings
our community together and celebrates our movement.

Wikimania 2022 will be a virtual main event, with the option for communities
across the movement to host in person events where possible. There will be
grant funding for these in person events – more information to come on
Wikimania mailing list [2].

In the coming weeks, the COT will be inviting your ideas and suggestions on
what Wikimania 2022 should look like – what would you like to see more of? What
should we keep from last year [3]? What should be different? And of course
we’ll need your contribution to the event as volunteers. More to be shared soon
and do not hesitate to share your thoughts with us on the Wikimania 2022
discussion page
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimania_2022

We wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone – that’s 1700 of you from

Whether talking about welcoming newcomers, fascinating presentations,
catching up with old friends, or singing and dancing together, you were
essential to the success.

After the event, we asked you to share your thoughts about the first-ever
virtual Wikimania: How accessible and inclusive was Wikimania 2021? What
did you most like about the event? What would you have changed? And how did
the newcomers among us feel? We invite you to read the report

And if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can watch back all of the great video

There are 140 tables available where you can share information for people
to see, and you don’t even have to be there. Finally, we will also be
hosting an Unconference space where any attendee can host a session and
gather with up to 20 other attendees. Reserve your Unconference space now

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2021 - Program and Practice Days

2021-08-02 Thread Winnie kabintie
Dear Community Members,

We are excited to share the program
 for this year’s
Wikimania with you! This was a huge effort as we received an unexpectedly
high number of submissions and as much as possible, we wanted to include
all of them. We created two whole new tracks just for this — in addition to
the original two, the plenary, and the Unconference and on-demand tracks.
We thank you all for your patience and understanding as we bring virtual
Wikimania live.

The program table is a work in progress and over the next few days, we will
edit and build it out with more information.

We will share a series of blog posts tomorrow on Diff
with event specifics and
technical solutions for this first-ever virtual edition of Wikimania. All
registered participants will also receive specific guidance by email in the
next few days.

Upcoming Office Hours and Remo Practice Days
: Starting Tuesday,
August 3 at 10 AM UTC, we would also like to invite you to join us at our
upcoming Office Hours and practice days to walk through our event platform
Remo and answer any question you may have around the platform and how to
use it. 5 other opportunities are available to hop on Remo and ask us any
questions. Please check for a time and day that works for you.

Best Wishes,

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania Hackathon 2021: Call for sessions and projects now open!

2021-07-28 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hello all,

This email is a reminder to start proposing projects and sessions for this
year’s Wikimania hackathon, taking place on August 13th (the first day of
Wikimania). You may have already seen the announcement email last week with
all the details.

This year’s hackathon will take place in a 24 hrs format covering all time
zones. You can start proposing a session or a project by following the
guidelines here: <
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2021:Hackathon#Propose_a_project_or_a_session>
[1].

We also encourage folks to reuse the video of a previously recorded session
(in lecture format) to organize a watch party-style session. And, you can
pause during or after for questions and discussions. That way, you have to
do less prep, and one can watch your session at any time during the event.

There isn't a specific focus area proposed this time, so your session or
project needn't fit under a theme. Anything that involves MediaWiki
development or covers a technical area in the Wikimedia ecosystem. Plus, we
welcome sessions that would be helpful to newcomers–new to the event, our
technical spaces, or projects.

If you have any questions, feel free to use the related talk page to
contact the organizing team or join the community conversation on Telegram:
 [2].

We look forward to your participation!

Cheers,
Srishti

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2021 Scholarship Acceptances & Digital Assets

2021-07-21 Thread Winnie kabintie
Dear Community Members,

We are pleased to inform you that the first round of scholarships to
facilitate attendance for this year's virtual Wikimania has been accepted
and the funds are being distributed.

As previously announced, the scholarships for the 2021 Wikimania are only
being channeled through affiliates. This was a complex decision and
something that we will build on for next year. Individuals who are not in a
community with an affiliate but would wish to receive support like data,
mobile top-off, and childcare can request a nearby affiliate for support.

We have so far received 22 Scholarship applications.

We appeal to all affiliates to be supportive of nearby regional communities
that may need help and reach out to the COT should there be need for
further guidance. Scholarship applications close on 31 July 2021
.(

Digital Assets

We also invite you to work with this Wikimania’s digital assets, which
include high-resolution graphics and virtual backgrounds. Access the
digital assets HERE
 and
have fun.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2021 Hackathon and Session Acceptances

2021-07-19 Thread Winnie kabintie
Dear Community Members,

We are pleased to announce that a hackathon
 will take place on
the first day of Wikimania (August 13th). During the 24 hours covering all
time zones, we aim to provide a space where the technical community as well
as others interested, including newcomers, can gather. We also aim to
onboard people who would like to get involved in Mediawiki development and
the tools ecosystem.

We see Hackathon as a space for experiments. With an open schedule and a
light, self-organized mindset, the hackathon day is the perfect opportunity
for you to try new projects, formats or to gather people and start working
on a new idea.

To learn more about this year’s hackathon, discover how to start a project,
or book a slot in the program, please visit this page:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2021:Hackathon

If you have any questions, feel free to use the related talk page to
contact the organizing team or join the community conversation on Telegram (see
link ).

Session Submissions Updates

A first round of acceptances for the session submissions have been sent out
already and respective community members notified via email. In response to
so many great submissions, we have largely expanded the available virtual
space at Wikimania. However, this is quite a complex and time-consuming
task. We thank you for your patience and will continue to communicate the
results over the next few days.

Wikimania 2021 Registration is Open. Please register HERE
 if you
haven’t done so already.

2021-06-30 Thread Winnie kabintie
Dear Community Members,

We are once again pleased to share a great update on Wikimania 2021
regarding language support. With the new changes, speakers will not need to
provide an English transcription for their pre-recorded sessions if they
would not be in English as we had communicated in our previously announced
language approach

.

Please Read More about our revised language Approach HERE

.

We are grateful to everyone that joined our COT office Hours and shared
ideas that informed this new language Approach.

More details will be coming later this week, so please be on the

  -

   Scheduling Principles:
   -

We are taking into consideration all time zones for Wikimania and

program on weekdays to accommodate diverse individual schedules.

The first day of the five days of Wikimania is dedicated to the
  Hackathon.
  -

There is a two-hour break each day.

  -

   Wikimania registration
   -

Since this year will be our first-ever virtual experiment for
Wikimania, and we want to maximize attendance; there will be no
registration costs for event participants! Registering for the 2021
virtual Wikimania will be free of charge!

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania Updates - Scholarships and Sessions

2021-05-11 Thread Winnie Kabinte
Dear Wikimedia Community Members,

We’re so excited to share some updates with you around Wikimania 2021!
We’ve been hard at work, getting things running and putting things in place
and realized we have so much we’d like to share with you. Thank you for
your flexibility and understanding, as we navigate through this rapidly
moving ship.

   1.

Wikimania 2021 will be happening! We’ve already announced the dates
(August 13-17) but wanted to remind you - in case you had any doubts - that
the first-ever virtual Wikimania will be happening - and we want you there!
   [1]

   1.

We noticed that all though we’ve been going full speed on the back end
at organizing Wikimania 2021, we haven’t updated you as frequently as we
would like… So, we will be sending out a weekly update email to all of you
on Mondays - until the event goes live. Which in case you were wondering,
is in 3 months and 2 days! (Yes, that soon!)

   1.

We will be having a Scholarship Program this year as well! We’d like to
remove most barriers of participation for those who would otherwise not be
able to join. More information will be coming soon around Scholarships - so
   stay tuned!

   1.

This year's theme is: Celebrate 20 years of Wikipedia and the humans who
make it happen. We will also be opening up submission proposals for
sessions - you can apply as an individual, a collective or a Community
   Organization.

We are excited about all the work and progress happening so far to make
this event happen. We're looking forward to hearing about your amazing
session proposals to help bring Wikimania 2021 to life. We can't wait to
convene to celebrate two decades of free knowledge.

Best Wishes,

Winnie Kabintie (User:Ms_Kabintie

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2021 Updates: Save the date and Core Organizing Team

2021-04-09 Thread Iolanda Pensa
[Sorry for cross-posting the following]

Dear Wiki Community,

It is with great pleasure that we - the Wikimania Steering Committee[1] -
announce that Wikimania will be hosted virtually from August 13-17th, 2021 [2]
and that the Core Organizing Team (COT) has been selected and fully onboarded.
Since 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia, Wikimania 2021's theme is
20 years of Wikipedia and all the humans that make it possible. We'll look back
at our history and celebrate our future.

We thank everyone who applied to the call for volunteers [3] - it was a tough
selection process given the impressive number of strong applicants we received.
However, The Wikimania Steering Committee is pleased to announce that after
due deliberation and assessment, we selected a total of 9 individuals from our
broad community who will lead the way in organizing the first ever virtual
Wikimania.

The official Core Organizing Team members are the following:
Vanj Padilla
Anna Torres (Anna Torres (WMAR)
Susanna Mkrtchyan (WikiTatik)
Winnie Kabintie
Lea Lacroix (WMDE)
Yamen Bousrih (Yamen)
Gnangarra
Bodhisattwa
Lodewijk (Effeietsanders)

We trust that each COT member has the skills, dedication and willingness to
come together and bring to life our very first virtual edition of Wikimania and
to help create the necessary spaces for our community to continue to thrive and
work together. We had originally foreseen the need for 4-6 individuals to form
the COT but after such strong applications, we decided to extend that number to
9 individuals, given the great team that we identified could work together and
flourish.

We invite you all to participate in Wikimania 2021 and to contribute to its
content and success. The COT will be reaching out to some applicants who marked
their availability to be volunteers in their application, but we also encourage
you to let us know if you would like to be considered for volunteer roles and
opportunities for Wikimania 2021.

With this said, as the functioning Wikimania Steering Committee, we would like
to make public our endorsement of the Core Organizing Team and our trust that
they will move forward with the great responsibility and excitement of bringing
to life Wikimania 2021.

The COT will soon be announcing more information around Wikimania 2021 and how
you can get involved - so please stay tuned. Please save the dates in your
calendars, we hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
The Wikimania Steering Committee

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2021: Call for volunteers and core team

2021-02-21 Thread phoebe ayers
Hello everyone,

Following the recent news that 2021 Wikimania will be virtual

[1], the Wikimania Steering Committee
[2] wanted to follow
up with some updates and opportunities to be involved in the planning for
Wikimania 2021.

TL;dr: *The Wikimania Steering Committee has begun planning for Wikimania
2021, and we are looking for 5-6 people to be on the core organizing team,
plus additional volunteers for other roles.* If you would like to be part
of the core team for organizing this year's virtual Wikimania, please let
us know by applying by *March 1.* Details are here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2021/Call_for_volunteers
or read
on!

==Hosting Wikimania 2021==

As there’s no physical location for this year's Wikimania, there are no
geographically based hosts. Instead, the Wikimania Steering Committee and
the Core Organizing Team (details below) will serve as an international
team of community organizers for Wikimania 2021. The Foundation will be
providing infrastructure, logistics and organizational support.

We invite you to join us and help produce this event for the community, by
the community.

==What we've done==

In order to help imagine and design a virtual event, in January 2021 the
Wikimania Steering Committee engaged in a series of design sprints that
were facilitated by event design experts. The goal of our design sprints
was to collaboratively start designing a few formats for a virtual
Wikimania experience to bring back to the wider community. You can read
more about the process, the people involved, and the outcomes of our design
sprints here
.[3]

==Theme & Dates==

Since this year marks the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia, and celebrations
are ongoing, Wikimania 2021’s theme will also celebrate 20 years of
Wikipedia. We’ll look back at our history and imagine our future.

We’re planning for the conference to be held in August 2021, following the
precedent set by past Wikimanias. Exact dates will follow soon.

==What about scholarships?==

Since an in-person event scholarship cannot be awarded for a virtual event,
there is an opportunity for us to look into repurposing the scholarships
program to enable participation and promote accessibility. A feasibility
study will be completed to develop how the scholarships program can be
repurposed, and the Core Organizing Team will help decide on the best
course of action.

==How to get involved==

For supporting the organization of Wikimania, we will need help from
community members around the world. To begin, we've identified roles that
will be part of the Core Organizing Team.

We are inviting nominations and self-nominations for the Core Organizing
Team for Wikimania 2021. This team will help lead the development and
production of the overall event, focused on the conference program, and
will be supported by technical and project staff at the Wikimedia
Foundation and the Wikimania steering committee. Volunteers will need to
commit time each week between now and August to make the event a success.

There will be additional calls for volunteers in other roles in the coming
months as well. If you have an idea for how you might be able to contribute
to Wikimania organization in other ways, please let us know by filling out
the application form
.

If you have organized past events in person or online, or are interested in
hosting international Wikimedia events in the future, we need you! Planning
Wikimania is an amazing way to meet and collaborate with other Wikimedians
from all over the world. This group will need people who are strong
collaborators, communicators, and solution-oriented and who are able to be
consistently involved through the conference.

If you have thoughts, ideas, or questions before applying, feel free to add
your comments on this meta page:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimania_2021 [4]

==So what are we looking for?==

Total number of people we are looking for

   - Organizing core team members: minimum of 2, maximum 3 community
   representatives
   - Programming core team members: minimum of 2, maximum 3 community
   representatives
   - These will be joined by 1-2 steering committee liaisons and staff from
the WMF, including a project manager and virtual event producer

What are the responsibilities of Organizing core team members (2-3
people)?:

   -
   - Help choose the right format for a virtual Wikimania - using prior
design work to set the length and outline of the event
   - Help shape/decide the outcome of the recommendations of the
   Scholarship Feasibility Report
   - Keep our international community up to date and involved throughout
   planning pha

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2005 Flashback livestream in 2 hours

2020-08-02 Thread Pharos
An oral history and discussion of the world of Wikimedia from 2005 to the
present, seen through the lens of the annual Wikimania conference. A
roundtable of panelists engage in a live video discussion (using YouTube,
Facebook, Twitter, Twitch). The audience is invited to share their views
and experiences.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkybZMOLY1E

Wikimania 2020 was scheduled for August 5 to coincide with the 15th
anniversary of the first Wikimania, but it had to be postponed til next
year due to Covid. Since we can't be together in person, we'll spend the
first episode of this series discussing the very first Wikimania, held in
2005 in Frankfurt, Germany, and the entire year of 2005 in Wikimedia and
wikis. This was the first international conference of the Wikimedia
movement and the first time many participants had met another Wikipedian.
It was held in a youth hostel (Haus der Jugend) in Frankfurt, and we spent
much of the week outside in the hostel's beer garden. What else was going
on in the world of Wikipedia and wikis in 2005? Attendees and organizers of
Wikimania 2005 will talk about this momentous early event, how it shaped
Wikimedia going forward, and what Wikipedia and Wikimedia was like in 2005,
in the context of the wider world.

A project of the Wikipedia Weekly Network, part of the countdown to the
20th anniversary of Wikipedia (January 15, 2021):

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] [Covid-19] Postponing Wikimania Bangkok until 2021

2020-03-18 Thread Thomas Shafee
Regarding remote participation Wikimania 2020:

The *Research Data Alliance* has moved it's current conference that was
meant to be over the next five days to in stead be online across 18 march -
10 Apr (several sessions of high interest to wikimedians):

    *

What was previously $700 is now free and was re-organised with only 1
week's notice. Possible learning items for a remote Wikimania? It's a mixed
working-group and plenary session based format that is highly relevant to
wikimedia movement.

All the best,
Thomas

This question makes sense.

Probably people going in Japan and having a stop in Bangkok may generate
as consequence a higher flight ticket's cost.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Wikimania 2019 Early Bird Registration is Now Open!

2019-05-31 Thread Isarra Yos
Are there any plans to add ticket options that are more affordable,
especially for volunteers?

Even with Early Bird discount, $270 is... a lot, frankly (and after
today, $375). Prior to Montreal two years ago (Cape Town last year was
also similarly expensive), the registration cost of Wikimanias for
Wikimedia contributors was generally in the 30-50€ range for the whole
event - even Esino Lario, where food and full accommodation were
included in the default ticket, also had a 'simple' ticket option
skipping this that was still in the usual price range. Is there any
chance we could bring this practice back? Or... something?

This isn't even just that I can't afford this (which I can't - the
registration costs more than the plane ticket would), /a lot of us/
probably aren't going to be able to. Wikimania isn't like most
conferences, where attendees are being sent by their companies or
organisation; many of us who would consider going are individuals. Not
only do we not necessarily have any larger organisations to fund our
attendance, we're largely not getting paid for any of this, either -
we're donating our time to be a part of this movement, and now we're
expected to pay hundreds of dollars, as community members, to attend an
event that used to be specifically for the community?

This is especially going to be a major turnoff to any newcomers, as it
precludes people just registering and checking it out, seeing what's up,
unless they have a lot of money to throw around on things they're not
sure about. And based on the conversations I've had with various
newcomers over the years who have been drawn into such events (previous
wikimanias, hackathons, other conferences) and been highly engaged and
inspired by their experiences, this is apt to be a major loss.

I'll also note that while scholarships do resolve this issue for some
people, the scholarship budget is limited, and also generally focussed
on travel and accommodation costs for folks who would otherwise not be
able to get there, not attendance costs for people who can get there
just fine but would prefer to spend that 250€ on something else, like a
couple of months of groceries. There wasn't a 'just cover the
registration fee' option with the scholarship applications at all. Not
that... there should be?

Basically, would it be possible to maybe get some more options here?

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Sensory overloads

2018-08-15 Thread Amir E. Aharoni
Thank you for sharing this, Romaine.

Our experiences are so different, and we should acknowledge it and cherish
it, and we need to respect all people and accommodate all people.

My experience is related and opposite at the same time. I sometimes tell
people that Wikimania is my social life. It's an exaggeration; it's
Wikimania and other Wikimedia-related events: hackathons, workshops, local
meetups. But that's really about it. The Wikimedia community is my social
life. Events other than Wikimedia events —weddings, holidays, parties, you
name it— can easily cause me to feel out of place and to experience
feelings described in this thread.

Wikimania is where I feel completely at home. But if it's not a place where
others can feel at home, it's a problem.

I remember one Wikimedia event that had an "introversion room". I remember
how some people cheered when the event organizer mentioned it in her
welcome speech. We need more of that: not only "introversion rooms" (even
though they are welcome), but anything that makes people feel welcome.

We need more of this consideration and inclusion not just because it's the
right and decent human thing to do. We need it because it's our expressed
goal to include every single human being. Who if not us?

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Celebrating Wikimania 2018 online

2018-07-28 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
I have added the minimal I have to do for Mozambique [1]. They are three
Listeria lists and consequently they will update. I do work on the data but
my objective is not to complete them all. I add the relation to the higher
level "administrative and territorial entity". To do this I often add new
ones and change items that are a combination of two levels (eg a town and
an entity). These are different, require different statements.

What I also do is copy these queries to Wikipedias. I do that when I do
that. Now I am working on the Zulu Wikipedia so the Yoruba and other
Wikipedias have to wait.

My wish is for people to notice this work, contribute to it and use the
result in templates. In the Celtic Knot conference, at the recent
Wikimania, presentations were made how information can be provided from
Wikidata using infoboxes that require little expertise and work. When a
small Wikipedia does not have basic information like the places where
people were born or died, that information has to be available from
something different from articles. When it is not possible to link, the
article will quickly become rather empty.

There is an ongoing discussion to update the Incubator project by providing
them with wikis. Supporting them with data is something I have advocated
for years. Particularly Africa has not been treated equally, the
information / data gap is huge. Have a look at this as well when you care
for Mozambique [2].
Thanks,
  GerardM

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Celebrating Wikimania 2018 online

2018-07-27 Thread Yaroslav Blanter
Hi Paulo,

in the first instance, I am interested in improving articles on the
Mozambique districts on the English Wikipedia. I have already done that for
the southern half of the country (Buzi District which I references to is a
representative example of how I see these articles).

I was not planning to do anything specific about these districts on
Wikidata or elsewhere, but if you think it would be useful we can discuss
and do smth.

(I will be on holidays for two weeks starting tomorrow, my user name is
Ymblanter).

Cheers

Hi

Yaroslav ,

I'm working with Mozambique as well. I've been thinking about adding all
those divisions to Wikidata, and then generating the Wikipédia articles
from that info (not "live", though, just copying the information). I
believe it would be much quicker, and would fill and correct Wikidata
entries on the way.

If you are interested in using something like that, please drop me a note.

All the best,

Paulo

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Celebrating Wikimania 2018 online

2018-07-26 Thread Yaroslav Blanter
Hi Gerard,

when you come to Mozambique, pls let me know, there are reliable sources
down to the third level administrative divisions. For example, the two
sources present in

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buzi_District

are available for every district (though I so far only added about half of
them to the English Wikipedia articles).

Cheers

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimania-l] Celebrating Wikimania 2018 online

2018-07-26 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
I do blog and tweet using #AfricaGap.. At this time I am adding countries
and their "administrative and territorial entities" in Wikidata. In many a
Wikipedia, they want to have "human settlements" linked to the lowest level
and these to every time a higher level.

What I do is add more and more countries. The information is incomplete. It
takes a lot of people and a lot of time to get this done. To gain
participation, I add Listeria list to a set of Wikipedias. I work on
cleaning up the data but there is much to be done. One of the benefits of
the Listeria lists for me is that I notice any and all activity. After
Wikimania there was a spike, thanks to some bot work.

What I have noticed is that information on Wikipedias did not keep up with
changes that rearanged these "territories". Consequently start and end
dates are missing on many items. For me, the current situation is most
relevant and historic "territories" are not really considered by me.

You find what I am working on here [1]. You will find much of the same data
on several (African language) Wikipedias.
Thanks,
 GerardM

Great idea Romaine!

I am now working on Esperanto Wikivoyage (in Incubator), mostly to make it
fully working. Now I am finishing Europe and immediately after that I will
focus on Africa (not only for the Africagap and to help our colleagues but
also to support tourism and facilitate meetings in Africa).

Hi to all,
without being too original here, and following praveenp comments - would
be good to encourage recipients of WMF scholarship to organize some type
of Wikimania follow-up activities back in their groups or chapters.

I do believe that most of them are doing it anyway without any
requirements from WMF, but if majority would  do it - we could have
something as a ”permanent Wikimania” unfolding globally for a couple of
months after the official Wikimania.

Fae,

We don't yet have a Wikimania 2019 wiki "up and ready". I would suggest
the following:

for committee:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_Committee

I will leave it to WMSE to say where they'd like these to go.

Thanks, Ellie

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2019

2018-02-06 Thread Ellie Young
*All,On behalf of the Wikimania Steering Committee and the Wikimedia
Foundation, I am pleased to announce that we have decided to have Wikimania
located in Sweden in 2019. The proposal
 from the
Wikimedia Sweden chapter was accepted. The committee appreciates and values
the long standing interest of Wikimania Sweden to host an event, and we
believe that hosting Wikimania will be an opportunity to boost Wikimedia
projects there with a specific focus on public art, a field in which the
Swedish Sverige team has been particularly active. The exact location of
the conference will be confirmed at a later date. The Wikimania Committee
reviewed and discussed four very strong proposals
 to host Wikimania in 2019.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2018 Call for Submissions

2018-02-04 Thread Liam Wyatt
Dear Wikimedia community,

We are pleased to announce that Wikimania 2018 is now accepting proposals
for workshops, discussions, presentations, or research posters to give
during the conference. To read the full instructions visit the event wiki
and click on the link provided there to make your proposal:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions

The deadline for submissions is 23:59 UTC on *Sunday March 18, 2018*.
This is approximately 6 weeks away. Whether you are a community member of
one of the Wikimedia projects, or a fellow open content creator or
consumer, we welcome your proposal for a session.

*Theme*
This year, the conference will be taking place in Cape Town, South Africa,
where the organisers are giving this Wikimania a unique flavor — an
explicit theme based in African philosophy:

“Bridging knowledge gaps, the *ubuntu* way forward.”
Read more about this theme, why it was chosen, and what it means for the
conference program at the Wikimedia blog:
*

Throughout the conference program, this theme will be tightly held, but
loosely defined - in order to encourage a diverse range of responses to the
theme. It is our hope that this theme will give us the opportunity to
further our goal of creating the “sum of human knowledge”, by encouraging
greater diversity and inclusion in who participates and what we discuss at
Wikimania.

To learn more, and to make a proposal for the conference, please visit:
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions

Please forward this announcement to other lists and groups across the
Wikimedia movement.

We look forward to reading your submissions. Sincerely,

*Program committee co-chairs Emna Mizouni, Felix Nartey, and Liam Wyatt.*

Betreff: [Wikimania-l] Call for Scholarship Committee, Help wanted for new
applicants and African community

Dear Wikimaniacs,

we are now calling for the Scholarship Committee.

The Scholarship Committee is an important and diverse group of volunteers who
help to run the scholarship program. We encourage people from all Wikimedia
wikis to apply for this position so that the committee can handle applications
in many different languages.

The main duties of the committee members prior to Wikimania 2018 are:
* Participation in periodic online meetings with scholarships program manager
and other committee members.
* Review and edit communications material (e.g. application questions).
* Assistance in determination of scholarship applicant requirements.
* Assurance of due consideration and speedy response time to Wikimania
scholarship applications in multiple languages.

For further information please visit
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_Handbook#Scholarships and
https://wikimania2018.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships.

We are looking for Wikimedians from all over the world, who are:
* fluent in written English and have good communication skills, or can name
local community member(s) who help them with English translations.
* discreet and able to handle confidential applicant information, and
objectively assess candidates.
* willing to review scholarship applications remotely in early 2018, estimated
time is 30 hours. A review guide can be found on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:TPS/Wikimania_scholars/Reviewer%27s_guide.
* having either or both:
** previously attended Wikimania,
** strong knowledge of the cross-project Wikimedia community.

Scholarship Committee members may not apply for a scholarship themselves but
there is a small budget for supporting committee members to attend Wikimania.
Please tell us if you need financial support in case you’ll be selected.

If you're interested in serving on the Scholarship Committee, please send us an
email to  wikimania-scholarsh...@wikimedia.org. If you have any questions,
please don't hesitate to contact us there as well.

Deadline to apply is Sunday, December 10, 2017. The organizers will contact all
candidates and publish the list of scholarship committee members right
afterwards.

Proposed timeline
* Nov 30–Dec 10: Call for Scholarship Committee
* mid-December: Selection of the Scholarship Committee and start of the
submission time
* 5–26 February (estimated time frame): main review time

Before the start of the submission time, we are adapting the application
process to take recent activities more into account than the years before, as
proposed on wikimania-l. On the one hand we want to encourage returning
Wikimania participants to share their knowledge, on the other newcomers to
Wikimania to apply for a scholarship at all. Former scholarship recipients can
help us with the latter by sharing their successful applications on MetaWiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:TPS/Wikimania_scholars#2017_WMF_Wikimania_Scholarships.
In case you don’t have your text at hand, you can send us a confirmation mail
to wikimania-scholarsh...@wikimedia.org where you allow us to publish it for
you.

Above all, we want to support African community members with applying for
scholarships. To achieve that, we are especially looking for volunteers who
want help us with encouraging people, assisting with the application form,
finding the right level of presenting one’s activities, etc. Please reach out
to us if you'd like to help.

Many thanks,
David Richfield and Martin Rulsch

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2017 - Birds of a feather discussion: Wikipedia + Libraries Meetup

2017-08-10 Thread Aaron
Hello everyone,

If you are interested in The Wikipedia Library or Wikipedia and
Libraries, we have an event that might just suit you. We're talking
about the *Birds of a feather discussion: Wikipedia + Libraries Meetup*
that will happen in Wikimania 2017 on Friday, August 11.

If you are coming in-person, come join us in the venue at the time given
below!

Venue: *Joyce/Jarry (level A)*

Time: *Friday August 11, 13:00 - 13:30 EDT (17:00 - 17:30 UTC)*

You'll be getting a chance to meet librarians, Wikipedians, publishers
and other community leaders. You'll also learn how to get involved in
your community, how to collaborate and how to take upon projects and
create an impact.

If you won't be able to join us in-person, we'll also be taking your
questions from the Wikipedia + Libraries Etherpad
 and the
Wikipedia + Libraries Facebook group
. Please ask your question
in the above forums and we'll try our best to bring them into the
discussion.

For more information on the event, please refer to the submission page
.
For a list of all Wikipedia and Libraries related events, please visit
this meta page
.

Thank you,

Aaron
