Re: [Wikimedia-SF] [Publicpolicy] US/California AB 2880 vs PD-California?
Thanks for sharing this, Mike. Sounds like something we should discuss at the upcoming WikiSalon next Wednesday evening. I have some friends (outside the wiki world) who know California lawmaking fairly well, I will ask around a bit beforehand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bay_Area_WikiSalon,_May_2016 -Pete On Mon, May 16, 2016 at 9:41 PM, Mike Linksvayerwrote: > On 05/15/2016 08:07 PM, John P. All, I have confirmation that we have a room at the Wikimedia Foundation this Wednedsay evening at 6:00pm. The office is at 149 New Montgomery Street. I'm not sure how late the front desk is open, so in case the security guard leaves at 6:00, you might want to arrive a few minutes early; or if you can't get in, feel free to text or call me at 503-383-9454. [Wikimedia-SF] Wikimedia's 15th birthday party next Saturday!
Hello all! Please join us in celebrating Wikipedia's 15th birthday on Saturday, January 16! We have a half-day gathering planned at the Wikimedia Foundation offices in downtown San Francisco. Besides (of course) birthday cake, we'll have: * Lightning talks * Wikipedia's content gender gap * Stories from Wikipedia's "weird old days" * A panel discussion on the significance future of Wikipedia * Discussion with Wikimedians in Washington about west coast organizing Find all the details of the event -- and sign up for a lightning talk -- here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Wikipedia_Day_2016 Get a preview of some of the panelists here: http://wikistrategies.net/15-for-15-announcement/ And register for the event here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IHjdZSrNbI_ITzOKYlwintMun18a7qdyLIh823hZEGU/viewform Looking forward to seeing you at the event! -Pete [[User:Peteforsyth]] ___ Wikimedia-SF mailing list Wikimedia-SF@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-sf
Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Unconference on Wikipedia Day weekend
Update: I've talked with Richard in NYC, and Stephen at WMF. I'm interested contributing to the event. I put together a basic wiki page to plan/organize here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Wikipedia_Day_2016 I am intrigued by the idea of connecting with other cities, but I'd like to first focus on what we can do to make it worthwhile locally, before committing to extensive syncing. My suggestion: the 1pm to 2pm "Lightning Talks" part seems great, and as I understand it would be coordinated locally by Stephen LaPorte, and would be synced with (at least) NYC and Seattle to some extent. I also think it makes sense to do some kind of video check-in later in the day with other locations, IF we have an event that lasts several hours. What would others like to do? Are there people on this list who want to, say, take a 30 or 60 minute time slot and put together a panel discussion? Anybody eager to cook up some special birthday food, or make a donation? I am happy to seek out a sponsor or two to cover, say, pizza and birthday cake (which is what NYC is doing). I have some independent plans to do some video interviews about "Wikipedia at 15," which I could potentially repurpose into a 30 or 60 minute session. What other ideas are out there? [Wikimedia-SF] Wikipedia Barn Raising July 19, focusing on Open Education
Hi Bay Area wikifolk! Please join us for a Wikipedia Barn Raising event focusing on Open Educational Resources (OER). The Barn Raising will happen on Saturday July 19th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time, at the Oakland Impact Hub, at 2323 Broadway (near the 19th St. BART station). Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Since 2012, we've been working to strengthen Wikipedia's coverage of OER and related topics. We've worked to build an international community around this goal at conferences, through our online Writing Wikipedia Articles (WIKISOO) course, and through the formation of WikiProject Open. At the Barn Raising, we will focus on improving high-priority Wikipedia articles, and consider ways to strengthen WikiProject Open as a resource for staying connected, learning, and working together. We'll also welcome online participants from around the world, with collaboration tools and scheduled video check-ins. Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Hackathon or editathon-like events subject to regulation in CA?
Thanks Karen and Ben, I appreciate especially the bit about the $2500 threshold. Also, Leigh Honeywell posted a helpful quote from the agency's descriptoin of its mission: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/gendergap/2014-January/004154.html I think this is worth keeping an eye on, because (while unlikely) it's not inconceivable to me that somebody might offer a course on Wikipedia (probably bundled with some other topics) that exceeds that cost threshold. I generally present events I produce, whether one-off or ongoing, as offering an opportunity to learn something; and I think formal instruction combined with peer learning can be a potent combination. More on all that here, for anybody interested: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/gendergap/2014-January/004155.html But, I think it's safe to say that the $2500 threshold addresses any potential urgency around this :) -Pete On Thu, Jan 30, 2014 at 5:29 PM, Karen Coyle kco...@kcoyle.net wrote: I doubt if we have anything to worry about -- or someone would be chasing after the entire MeetUp world. [Wikimedia-SF] Edit-a-Thon in Oakland on Sat. December 15
Hi all, I hope the holiday season is treating you well! I'm pleased to announce the third Wikipedia Women's Edit-a-thon, hosted by the California League of Women Voters and Tech Liminal, a co-working space in Oakland. The theme is Women and Democracy. League members will bring valuable expertise to a topic that could use lots of work on Wikipedia, and I look forward to bringing Wikipedians and League members together. (As always, if this topic doesn't excite you, you're welcome to work on any wiki content you like.) The edit-a-thon will be Saturday, December 15 from 2-5pm; beginners are invited to come arrive promptly at 1pm for an intro session. Please see the Wikipedia meetup page for more details, and to sign up. And let me know if you have questions or ideas! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Bay_Area_WikiWomen%27s_Edit-a-Thon_3 -Pete [[User:Peteforsyth]] on Wikipedia http://wikistrategies.net/pete-forsyth ___ Wikimedia-SF mailing list Wikimedia-SF@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-sf

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Time for a wiki conference on the west coast?
Dear Mr. Parker, Welcome to the list -- and, your vote of confidence in a west coast wiki conference is very encouraging. I'm very glad to hear the idea appeals to you! Judging from past RCC efforts, the first important step is to build some consensus for a vision, including a strong local volunteer base in a specific city, venue ideas, event format, etc. If you have ideas around that, please jump in with them! Or, if you're purely interested as a potential funder, that is very welcome news; but it will take a little time before we have a coherent proposal to bring to you. We will certainly get back in touch if and when plans start to firm up! -Pete [[User:Peteforsyth]] on English Wikipedia Principal, Wiki Strategies www.wikistrategies.net +1 503-383-9454 On Jan 29, 2012, at 10:57 AM, Sean Parker wrote: I would be open to provide financing for a West coast event From: wikimedia-sf-boun...@lists.wikimedia.org wikimedia-sf-boun...@lists.wikimedia.org To: portlandw...@googlegroups.com portlandw...@googlegroups.com; San Francisco Bay Area Wikimedians wikimedia-sf@lists.wikimedia.org Sent: Sat Jan 28 18:23:21 2012 Subject: [Wikimedia-SF] Time for a wiki conference on the west coast? Hey all, Recently, the idea of a RecentChangesCamp in Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, or elsewhere on the west coast has popped up on the RCC-planning mailing list. For those who don't know, RCC is one of the longer-standing wiki conferences, and has been held in Portland more than anywhere else. The last Portland one was in 2008; it's also been held in Montreal (x2), Camberra, Australia (x2), Boston, and Palo Alto. I think it's fantastic that this community remembers Portland so fondly, and is so interested in having a conference there. And there's clearly a very fertile soil in SF as well. From past experience, this conference only happens if there is strong local will to pull it off. But if that exists, there is a good core, international group of volunteers who will help out, and provide insights from past events. At the same time, it seems to me that the wiki world has evolved since RCC was first held. There are now several similar models, including the WikiConference (the Wikimedia movement's name for regional conferences; one was held last year in San Francisco); WikiSym (an academic conference about online collaboration, which has grown to include an Open Space component like RCC). Also, the PortlandWiki grown up since the last one, and has found some solid allies and beneficiaries in independent groups like Occupy and Portland Afoot. So, my question is: do people feel like putting together a wiki conference in 2012? And is RCC a good model for doing that? I'd highly recommend joining the RCC-planning email list and discussing there, so that we don't get separate discussions going. https://groups.google.com/group/rcc-planning -Pete p.s. Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Time for a wiki conference on the west coast?
Good question, Kul -- http://meetingwords.com/RccPlanning is the best place for this. RecentChangesCamp has a wiki, which has been where such planning usually takes place: http://recentchangescamp.org But, Mark Dilley has started a planning page on an Etherpad, which makes it a lot easier to get started (don't need an account, for instance). Once there is some solid content, it will probably more sense to move this to the wiki. -Pete On Jan 29, 2012, at 11:06 AM, Kul Takanao Wadhwa wrote: Pete - why don't you get a planning page started up on the Wiki? [Wikimedia-SF] San Francisco Hackathon, January 2012
Hey all, just want to let you know about the first San Francisco Hackathon -- an event for developers to learn about the MediaWiki world, get their hands dirty in a little code manipulation, and so forth. Here's the description from Sumana Hariharaswara, the Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Developer Coordinator: Developers in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, you can create cool hacks with and on Wikipedia. Our first San Francisco hackathon is happening Jan. 20-22, and we'll be there teaching you about MediaWiki (our software), about our API and about our framework for JavaScript feature development. Learn to reuse Wikipedia content in your own apps, create new functionality for every Wikipedia user around the world, or just tailor your own experience. [Wikimedia-SF] Wiki meetup tomorrow eve in the Mission!
Howdy folks, A few of us are meeting up at 6pm tomorrow at Noisebridge, in the Mission, to talk about all things wiki. We'll be greeting Mark Dilley, an awesome Portland-based wiki guy who's on his way back from facilitating RecentChangesCamp Canberra, in Australia -- and presumably full of great wiki tales (especially relating to academia, I believe). Other confirmed folks will be Eugene Kim, who recently facilitated Wikimedia's strategic plan; Pete Kaminski (I think), a co-founder of SocialText, and an all around people-connector; and myself. Plus, whatever Noisebridge folks happen to stop by and want to talk wiki. Noisebridge, if you don't know it, is a fantastic hacker space in the Mission. Their web site is a wiki, their governance model is some sort of do-ocracy, and it's a space that's always full of inquisitive and energetic opensource-minded folk. There's a signup page (which we've all been sort of ignoring) on their wiki: https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Wiki_meetup and a MeetingNotes page for building an agenda, if you're feeling all organization-y: http://meetingwords.com/rccx-sf Come join us :) -Pete F. -- Pete Forsyth 503-383-9454 mobile ___ Wikimedia-SF mailing list Wikimedia-SF@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-sf
