Re: [Wikimedia-SF] [Publicpolicy] US/California AB 2880 vs PD-California?

2016-05-16 Thread Pete Forsyth
Thanks for sharing this, Mike. Sounds like something we should discuss at
the upcoming WikiSalon next Wednesday evening. I have some friends (outside
the wiki world) who know California lawmaking fairly well, I will ask
around a bit beforehand.

All,

I have confirmation that we have a room at the Wikimedia Foundation this
Wednedsay evening at 6:00pm. The office is at 149 New Montgomery Street.
I'm not sure how late the front desk is open, so in case the security guard
leaves at 6:00, you might want to arrive a few minutes early; or if you
can't get in, feel free to text or call me at 503-383-9454.

George: Any way I can assist in getting to the office? I don't have a car,
but if a walking companion would make it easier I'd be happy to meet you
ahead of time.

J: No strong idea about scope or length of time; we just want to chat about
the idea of having a recurring monthly get-together, brainstorm ideas, and
hang out. Probably an hour or two.

Merrilee, Asaf, Neil: Glad to know you're interested! We'll definitely
report back to the list. I'm pretty sure we will be planning the first
meeting for a Wednesday in late April; if there are strong preferences,
please make them known!

It will be at, or at least near, the Wikimedia Foundation offices. (Should
know if their space is available shortly.) If it's not, I'd imagine we'll
find some place nearby. Probably 6 or 6:30pm. Will update the list when we
know more.

[Wikimedia-SF] Starting up monthly WikiSalons / WikiWednesday events

2016-03-13 Thread Pete Forsyth
All-

Several of us are working to set up a recurring monthly wiki meetup in San
Francisco!

We're using the name "WikiSalon," which has been used by groups in NYC and
Washington DC. There's a planning doc on Meta Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Monthly_WikiSalon_in_San_Francisco (Some of
you might be more familiar with the "Wiki Wednesday" name...same idea, more
or less :)

We plan to get together the evening of Wednesday, March 30 to solidify
plans. If you're interested in joining in to help plan, please join us! (We
think this one will be a pretty small group, and we'll do a bigger
announcement for the April WikiSalon.)

Looking forward to connecting with more of you in person!

Happy editing,

[Wikimedia-SF] Wikimedia's 15th birthday party next Saturday!

2016-01-07 Thread Pete Forsyth
Hello all!

Please join us in celebrating Wikipedia's 15th birthday on Saturday,
January 16! We have a half-day gathering planned at the Wikimedia
Foundation offices in downtown San Francisco. Besides (of course) birthday
cake, we'll have:
* Lightning talks
* Wikipedia's content gender gap
* Stories from Wikipedia's "weird old days"
* A panel discussion on the significance future of Wikipedia
* Discussion with Wikimedians in Washington about west coast organizing

Find all the details of the event -- and sign up for a lightning talk --
here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Wikipedia_Day_2016

Get a preview of some of the panelists here:

And register for the event here:

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Unconference on Wikipedia Day weekend

2015-12-21 Thread Pete Forsyth
Update:

I've talked with Richard in NYC, and Stephen at WMF. I'm interested
contributing to the event. I put together a basic wiki page to
plan/organize here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco/Wikipedia_Day_2016

I am intrigued by the idea of connecting with other cities, but I'd like to
first focus on what we can do to make it worthwhile locally, before
committing to extensive syncing. My suggestion: the 1pm to 2pm "Lightning
Talks" part seems great, and as I understand it would be coordinated
locally by Stephen LaPorte, and would be synced with (at least) NYC and
Seattle to some extent. I also think it makes sense to do some kind of
video check-in later in the day with other locations, IF we have an event
that lasts several hours.

What would others like to do? Are there people on this list who want to,
say, take a 30 or 60 minute time slot and put together a panel discussion?
Anybody eager to cook up some special birthday food, or make a donation?

I am happy to seek out a sponsor or two to cover, say, pizza and birthday
cake (which is what NYC is doing). I have some independent plans to do some
video interviews about "Wikipedia at 15," which I could potentially
repurpose into a 30 or 60 minute session. What other ideas are out there?

[Wikimedia-SF] Wikipedia Barn Raising July 19, focusing on Open Education

2014-07-07 Thread Pete Forsyth
Hi Bay Area wikifolk!

Please join us for a Wikipedia Barn Raising event focusing on Open
Educational Resources (OER). The Barn Raising will happen on Saturday July
19th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time, at the Oakland Impact Hub, at
2323 Broadway (near the 19th St. BART station). Lunch and refreshments will
be provided.

Since 2012, we've been working to strengthen Wikipedia's coverage of OER
and related topics. We've worked to build an international community around
this goal at conferences, through our online Writing Wikipedia Articles
(WIKISOO) course, and through the formation of WikiProject Open.

At the Barn Raising, we will focus on improving high-priority Wikipedia
articles, and consider ways to strengthen WikiProject Open as a resource
for staying connected, learning, and working together. We'll also welcome
online participants from around the world, with collaboration tools and
scheduled video check-ins.

Registration link:

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Hackathon or editathon-like events subject to regulation in CA?

2014-01-30 Thread Pete Forsyth
Thanks Karen and Ben,

I appreciate especially the bit about the $2500 threshold. Also, Leigh
Honeywell posted a helpful quote from the agency's descriptoin of its
mission:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/gendergap/2014-January/004154.html

I think this is worth keeping an eye on, because (while unlikely) it's not
inconceivable to me that somebody might offer a course on Wikipedia
(probably bundled with some other topics) that exceeds that cost threshold.
I generally present events I produce, whether one-off or ongoing, as
offering an opportunity to learn something; and I think formal instruction
combined with peer learning can be a potent combination.

More on all that here, for anybody interested:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/gendergap/2014-January/004155.html

But, I think it's safe to say that the $2500 threshold addresses any
potential urgency around this :)

Of course, hackathons and editathons in the Wikimedia space are

that makes a difference. (The article doesn't have anything to say about
 what compliance entails.)

[Wikimedia-SF] Join the Wikipedia volunteer response team

2013-02-02 Thread Pete Forsyth
Hi all,

This email list is full of knowledgeable, helpful Wikipedians/Wikimedians.
Would you like to join the volunteer team that responds to incoming email
requests about Wikipedia articles, etc.? For instance, the subjects of articles
reporting factual errors or defamation, or submitting photos of themselves.
It's important and rewarding work. If this sounds interesting, see below!

Subject: [Wikipedia-l] Call for OTRS volunteers
 Reply-To: Wikipedia mailing list wikipedi...@lists.wikimedia.org

The Wikimedia OTRS team[1] is receiving an increasing number of
emails, with almost 55,000 general information and permissions tickets
responded to in 2012 alone.[2] We are greatly in need of more
volunteers to catch up and help prevent continued backlog. OTRS
volunteers have the benefit of choosing how much time they'd like to
commit and share a wide variety of tools to help when responding to
 inquires. Your private information would not be exposed to the public;
replies are issued from a shared Wikimedia email address.

We are looking especially for people who are strong in any or all of
 the following areas:

 * Familiar with processes on any Wikimedia project and able to answer
routine questions about them (some common responses include reference
desk referrals; explanations of deletion processes or how to edit. The
 kind of thing you might run into at the Teahouse or Help desks);

 * Familiar with acceptable licenses for images and text and willing to
handle correspondence related to permissions (many routine, but some
issues include unclear statements of permission or permissions issued
 by people who can't be clearly connected to the source);

 * Familiar with policies regarding living people and organizations and
able to assist article subjects with lightweight needs (updating
logos, correcting small information) or serious concerns (allegations
 of gross inaccuracy; bias).

For more information about volunteering, please see the recruiting
page[3] on Meta. Being a member of the OTRS team is a great chance to
be part of the public face of Wikimedia. We can't always help people,
but we do our best to leave them impressed with our professionalism
and responsiveness. If this sounds like something you'd be interested
in, we encourage you to consider applying[4].

While the English queues are the busiest, the info queues for all
languages could use help, and we are always looking for new
volunteers. Please translate this message and pass the word along to
those in your local communities who may wish to apply.

We look forward to seeing your applications on Meta-Wiki. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact myself or any other
 administrator of the system.[5]

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] In town Feb 23-28, anyone wanna meet up?

2013-01-21 Thread Pete Forsyth
Hi Mike, thanks for writing!

I will be around then, and would be happy to get together. I'm not much of
a tech guy, but I'm sure we could find plenty to talk about.

I suggest you pick a time that works for you, and post a notice on the
Meetup.com group and the SF Meetup page on English Wikipedia. (They will
reach somewhat different audiences, so hitting both is a good idea):
* http://www.meetup.com/Wikipedia-Engineering-Meetup/
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/San_Francisco

This far out, Im pretty sure I could get together any evening during that
time. Possible gathering places might include the hacker spaces Noisebridge
(in the Mission in SF, well established) or Sudoroom (in Oakland, very
new); both are near plenty of bars and restaurants.

Looking forward to meeting you!
Pete

Say now, what? :) Seems to me we had *two* great events last week, Oakland Wiki
just announced weekly edit-a-thons at the library, various other things in the
works. Portland had a real successful Wiki Loves Libraries event a month or two
back, we've had various fun wiknics, Wiki Loves Monuments…maybe it's the lack
of the sense of a cohesive group you're noting? Could be, but I'm not sure
that's a necessary ingredient to moving things forward. Actually, I think a
world in which lots of people and groups are supporting Wikipedia in
small/quasi-connected ways is pretty exciting! Not better or worse than a more
structured approach, but pretty enjoyable and productive.

[Wikimedia-SF] Edit-a-Thon in Oakland on Sat. December 15

2012-11-30 Thread Pete Forsyth
Hi all, I hope the holiday season is treating you well!

I'm pleased to announce the third Wikipedia Women's Edit-a-thon, hosted by the
California League of Women Voters and Tech Liminal, a co-working space in
Oakland.

The theme is Women and Democracy. League members will bring valuable
expertise to a topic that could use lots of work on Wikipedia, and I look
forward to bringing Wikipedians and League members together. (As always, if
this topic doesn't excite you, you're welcome to work on any wiki content you
like.)

The edit-a-thon will be Saturday, December 15 from 2-5pm; beginners are invited
to come arrive promptly at 1pm for an intro session.

Please see the Wikipedia meetup page for more details, and to sign up. And let
me know if you have questions or ideas!

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Time for a wiki conference on the west coast?

2012-01-29 Thread Pete Forsyth
Dear Mr. Parker,

Welcome to the list -- and, your vote of confidence in a west coast wiki
conference is very encouraging. I'm very glad to hear the idea appeals to you!

Judging from past RCC efforts, the first important step is to build some
consensus for a vision, including a strong local volunteer base in a specific
city, venue ideas, event format, etc.

If you have ideas around that, please jump in with them! Or, if you're purely
interested as a potential funder, that is very welcome news; but it will take a
little time before we have a coherent proposal to bring to you. We will
certainly get back in touch if and when plans start to firm up!

 Hey all,

Recently, the idea of a RecentChangesCamp in Portland, San Francisco,
Seattle, or elsewhere on the west coast has popped up on the RCC-planning
 mailing list.

For those who don't know, RCC is one of the longer-standing wiki conferences,
and has been held in Portland more than anywhere else. The last Portland one
was in 2008; it's also been held in Montreal (x2), Camberra, Australia (x2),
 Boston, and Palo Alto.

I think it's fantastic that this community remembers Portland so fondly, and
is so interested in having a conference there. And there's clearly a very
fertile soil in SF as well. From past experience, this conference only
happens if there is strong local will to pull it off. But if that exists,
there is a good core, international group of volunteers who will help out,
and provide insights from past events.

At the same time, it seems to me that the wiki world has evolved since RCC
was first held. There are now several similar models, including the
WikiConference (the Wikimedia movement's name for regional conferences; one
was held last year in San Francisco); WikiSym (an academic conference about
online collaboration, which has grown to include an Open Space component like
RCC). Also, the PortlandWiki grown up since the last one, and has found some
solid allies and beneficiaries in independent groups like Occupy and Portland
 Afoot.

So, my question is: do people feel like putting together a wiki conference in
2012? And is RCC a good model for doing that?

I'd highly recommend joining the RCC-planning email list and discussing
there, so that we don't get separate discussions going.

 -Pete

p.s. As an aside, I recently set up an IRC channel : #wikimedia-westcoast.
While I know that many of you are more wiki people than Wikimedia people,
I hope this is a useful tool for networking -- if you're an IRC user, please
join us and say hi sometime!

Re: [Wikimedia-SF] Time for a wiki conference on the west coast?

2012-01-29 Thread Pete Forsyth
Good question, Kul --

http://meetingwords.com/RccPlanning is the best place for this.

RecentChangesCamp has a wiki, which has been where such planning usually takes
place: http://recentchangescamp.org

But, Mark Dilley has started a planning page on an Etherpad, which makes it a
lot easier to get started (don't need an account, for instance). Once there is
some solid content, it will probably more sense to move this to the wiki.

[Wikimedia-SF] San Francisco Hackathon, January 2012

2011-11-30 Thread Pete Forsyth
Hey all, just want to let you know about the first San Francisco Hackathon --
an event for developers to learn about the MediaWiki world, get their hands
dirty in a little code manipulation, and so forth. Here's the description from
Sumana Hariharaswara, the Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Developer
Coordinator:

Developers in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, you can create cool hacks with
and on Wikipedia. Our first San Francisco hackathon is happening Jan. 20-22,
and we'll be there teaching you about MediaWiki (our software), about our API
and about our framework for JavaScript feature development. Learn to reuse
Wikipedia content in your own apps, create new functionality for every
Wikipedia user around the world, or just tailor your own experience.

Here's the page for more info and signup:

[Wikimedia-SF] Wiki meetup tomorrow eve in the Mission!

2011-01-31 Thread Pete Forsyth
Howdy folks,

A few of us are meeting up at 6pm tomorrow at Noisebridge, in the Mission,
to talk about all things wiki. We'll be greeting Mark Dilley, an awesome
Portland-based wiki guy who's on his way back from facilitating
RecentChangesCamp Canberra, in Australia -- and presumably full of great
wiki tales (especially relating to academia, I believe).

Other confirmed folks will be Eugene Kim, who recently facilitated
Wikimedia's strategic plan; Pete Kaminski (I think), a co-founder of
SocialText, and an all around people-connector; and myself. Plus, whatever
Noisebridge folks happen to stop by and want to talk wiki.

Noisebridge, if you don't know it, is a fantastic hacker space in the
Mission. Their web site is a wiki, their governance model is some sort of
do-ocracy, and it's a space that's always full of inquisitive and energetic
opensource-minded folk.

There's a signup page (which we've all been sort of ignoring) on their
wiki: https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Wiki_meetup
and a MeetingNotes page for building an agenda, if you're feeling all
organization-y: http://meetingwords.com/rccx-sf

Come join us :)
