The Wikimedia Participation Support program offers participation support to Wikimedia community members, i.e. volunteers contributing to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia or Commons, for non-Wikimedia events. Participation support is reimbursement covering travel, accommodation and incidental expenses as necessary, in relation with participating in (as distinct from merely attending) an event or activity. Presently, the program is a collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia Deutschland, and Wikimedia CH. In the past, only few members of the swiss communities have benefit from this program, and we would like that more of them actually get support. Purely speculative: several research institute in Switzerland have develop apps to recognize mountain peaks, I wonder if, using the pictures of monuments in Commons, such institute couldn’t develop a database of « profiles » used to recognize monuments in Switzerland. We get around 50% foreign language visitors and offer them very little (apart from a newly released audio guide). It offers people the chance to work together to curate a museum (or any other space) in their own way with many different perspectives, e.g * Butterfly identification guide for our butterfly house * Mammals Gallery gives Wikipedia articles for species in every display case * Browse a book that's on display (The Birds of America) with links to each species in your own language * Being able to augment displays already in the museum: * Add to the Giant Sequoia cross section we have that has names and dates on it's rings with links to those events and people * To link to Wikipedia articles from text on museum signs and to offer people the change to do translations of that museum sign in their own language. * Tree identification guide (not finished yet) 2. It has very low technology barriers compared to something using an app, it works on any browser on most devices, including odd things like Blackberrys and microsoft tablets 3. You don't have to put QR codes everywhere, sometimes it's not possible. 4. Anyone can do it for their local museum, art gallery, nature reserve etc at no cost and without permission. I played around with quite a few things before coming up with this including using Layar (image recognition) and google maps with geocoding, both being hard work and clumsy and not working very well when things are close together or 3d objects or the software doesn't allow collaboration. I have no idea where this sort of thing should live, any ideas? At QRpedia's heart it's a Wikipedia language redirect that happens to have a QR code as the way of getting there, perhaps it just needs a different name, Wikipedia language link?. I'd love to see QRpedia being used in a lot of places, for instance I would love to see QRpedia being used on OpenStreetMap links to Wikipedia and also for other projects like Wikivoyage. Dear all, The GLAMwiki Toolset project is a collaboration between Wikimedia Nederland, Wikimedia UK, Wikimedia France, Wikimedia CH (Switzerland) and Europeana. The goal of the project is to provide a set of tools to make batch uploads of GLAM content in Wikimedia Commons as easy as possible. They've been programatically extracted from a corpus of digitised books, with no metadata beyond the details of the book itself - which of course tells us very little about what any given picture is. As a result, they aren't much use for Commons - at least, not as a bulk upload. (I looked into this a few months back). They're all PD, though, so can be individually migrated across without any rights issues. The plan is to use Flickr to feed these into a crowdsourcing application of some form, and hopefully that will give us enough metadata to be able to start pulling them across into Commons. However, if you have any smart ideas for how we could bring them into Commons now, using the metadata we have... Wir haben im Gegenzug aber 1.500 EUR Leihgebühren eingespart. Für künftige Einsätze arbeite ich bereits an Lösungen. [Wikimediach-l] Wikimedia CH projects and FDC
Dear Wikimedia enthusiasts in Switzerland, This week the Funds Dissemination Committee is deliberating about 11 FDC applications made by Wikimedia chapters or thematic organization, among them Wikimedia CH. Before receiving the result of their deliberation I would like to tell you more about the FDC and its impact on Wikimedia CH activities. First of all, the FDC is determining the amount of funds that Wikimedia CH will receive from the Wikimedia Movement (WMF fundraiser) to accomplish its activities. The funds allocated are somehow earmarked to be used for projects with an impact on Wikimedia projects (i.e., Wikipedia, Commons, Wikisource, etc.), and in a reasonable proportion for the chapter's infrastructure. It’s only the second year than Wikimedia CH uses this process, and in a way we have to change our habits. We have to include our activities in a bigger, broader plan, where all the Wikimedia communities can raise their voice. In a few words, the project funds by the FDC must have a direct impact on Wikimedia projects by improving the content or participating to increase the editor community. Regarding the projects that have been proposed to Wikimedia CH this summer, I would like to clarify that there is no accepted or rejected projects, but there are projects with a clear impact on Wikimedia Projects and a clear support by Wikimedia CH members. These projects, like the Public Domain project or Wiki Loves Public Art, have been explicitly included in the Annual plan submitted to the FDC: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_CH/2014_annual_plan Other projects are questioned by WMCH members, do not have a clear impact on Wikimedia projects, or they may need to be redefined. These projects are not rejected, but they are likely to be not eligible for Wikimedia Movement funds, that's why they haven’t been mentioned in the Annual plan. That doesn’t mean that these projects will not be supported by Wikimedia CH, since there are other ways to support projects than by allocating a budget. Some projects can be improved and adapted and then fit into the FDC allocated budget. Our community managers and our CAO are here to help Wikimedia CH members to find alternative funding sources. The process to prepare the next FDC application will be significantly modified, especially to reflect that Wikimedia CH is an association dedicated to support Wikimedians in their Wikimedia activities, it means that we will make the process easier for proposing small project leaded by volunteer and supported by the chapter. The modification of the process will be prepare directly on the members wiki, think to request your access if you haven’t do it already. Je sais que Seniorweb.CH possède un groupe spécialement dédié à la langue française, cela serait une bonne opportunité pour avoir une nouvelle activité commune! Im Zusammenhang mit dem Mois de la contribution soll hervorgehoben werden, dass diese Initiative sich keinesfalls auf französischsprachige Regionen beschränkt und wenn eine deutsch- oder italienischsprachige Gruppe einen Event organisieren möchte, kann diese das gerne tun. Ein Budget ist verfügbar für die Miete eines Raumes, den Kauf von Getränken sowie für das Engagement von einer/m Französischlehrer/in. Ich weiss, dass im Rahmen von Seniorweb eine Gruppe existiert, die sich der französischen Sprache widmet. Dies wäre möglicherweise eine ausgezeichnete Gelegenheit, um eine weitere gemeinsame Aktivität zu lancieren. Hi Iolanda, Not sure to perfectly understand your concerns, so please excuse me if I do not really answer. First, Wikimedia movement has only one common mission Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world it means that Wikipedia in Jail is in the core of the Wikimedia movement mission. Any other interpretation of Wikimedia mission is the personal opinion of the people who express it, and do not reflect the core mission. For a concrete example, using free software is not the mission of Wikimedia movement, it can be considered as a plus, but when somebody use a close software to accomplish Wikimedia mission, he do not compromise the mission. For your definition of a partnership, partnership is not always a question of what you give and what you receive. Sometimes it's more about establishing a situation of trust that will benefit you in the future. This partnership bring us a lot benefit, and in the near future it could bring us new editors to Wikipedia. For your semantic distinction between supporting and cooperating, I do not share it, If I'm allowed to make a godwin point, during the last war, I don't think those who support were better than those who collaborate (typical french interpretation). Hi Beat, I cannot talk for the whole Switzerland, but for Wikimedia CH, nowadays there is no initiative to adapt this brochure. The only request for an adaptation by the chapter is yours during the last WMCH call for project, and even if the quality of the brochure is not challenged, its usage in Switzerland for a mass mailing towards the GLAM is still out of the chapter scope for 2013, but may change in 2104. English: Dear all, Wikimedia CH board receive several time this question, so I decide to give an answer on a public mailing list. The answer is simple : nothing :-) Why WMCH have no plan for WLM 2013 is a combination of several facts, here the major ones: *No volunteers stand up saying I want to organize it, please help me *It's not a part of WMCH staff duties for the moment. We had focus staff activities on more local project, with long term perspective. *The list of monument in the category A is well covered in Commons, and then the potential of a new contest in term of increasing content is low. *The lists B and C are not official and we do not want to use it without the support of the federal institutions. After carefully reading the WMF Board of Trustees letter and evaluating the first months of existence of the WCA, Wikimedia CH wants to make the following statement: Wikimedia CH has been supporting the idea of a Chapters Council since its beginning. Our support is even stronger in these troubled times. Since the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin, a lot of work has been accomplished to make the WCA a successful and helpful organization for the Wikimedia Chapters and the whole movement. It has to be said though that along with this hard work some aspects have been lost, like what our real priorities are. For almost a year, Wikimedia Chapters have worked to build a strong organization, trying to prevent all possible problems from an administrative point of view. We believe it was important to think about all the organizational problems the WCA would have to face in order to reach its goals but by doing this we first lost the enthusiasm of lots of chapter representatives and then the dynamics to actually create a helpful structure for the movement. Considering this, we, Wikimedia CH, encourage the Wikimedia Chapters to go back to the blue print and develop the list of tasks and goals the WCA should achieve: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Tasks. It is important to build an association where all chapters are equal, to start over designing an association without focusing on needed staff, focusing instead on the expected outcomes. We realize that in order for an international organization like the WCA to exist in the long term, we will need paid employees to do the routine work, and to prevent volunteer burnout. We feel that the necessity of staff will arise by activities. Let's cross that bridge when we come to it. To assure the equality of all chapters, we believe in a system where the chairman or president is a coordinator, not a decision-making power. Only this way we will ensure every chapter stays engaged with the Chapters Association. We also believe the first task of the Chapters Association should be to produce a manifesto which defines the goals of the Chapters Association and how we think we will carry out our duties. This manifesto should also respect the expectations of movement actors like the project communities and the WMF Board of Trustees. Their expectations are important and require actions from the chapters. We are ready to face them. Parallel werden erfahrene Wikipedianer die vorhandenen Materialien sichten und Vorschläge machen, welche Beiträge sie erarbeiten. Es geht auch um alte Handwerkstechniken. Deshalb werden möglicherweise auch Filme für die Wikipedia entstehen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit aktiven Vereinsmitgliedern aus Museumsvereinen und darunter die Gewinnung von Autoren für die Wikipedia, ist aus unserer Sicht erfolgversprechend. Inizierà a collaborare dal 1° Luglio e gestirà le operazioni quotidiane dell'associazione. Questo ruolo è un primo e importante passo verso il professionalismo per ridurre il carico di lavoro sul Direttivo ma anche un passo per aumentare il supporto per i Wikimediani e la comunicazione con Wikimedia Foundation. Chantal Ebongué ha 47 anni e una laurea in scienze umanistiche presso l'Università di Losanna e diplomi in gestione finanziaria e culturale e sociale. Recentemente ha lavorato a Losanna per l'Università della Terza Età ed era stata assunta in questa istituzione circa 10 anni fa quando era una piccola associazione locale alla ricerca di una direzione e di professionalismo. Ora l'Università della Terza Età di Losanna è una delle più grandi della Svizzera con 100 volontari, 13 insegnanti e 2 membri dello staff che gestiscono 200 letture, 30 corsi, 20 viaggi culturali e circa 3000 partecipanti all'anno. Ebongué non vorrebbe essere solo membro amministrativo, ma vorrebbe anche avere in carico la ricerca di nuovi partner per i progetti GLAM. Ha anche una grande esperienza di lavoro con i volontari, nella gestione del no profit e della raccolta fondi. English: Chantal Ebongué is Wikimedia CH's Chief Administrative Officer and the first employee under a regular contract. She will start her position on 1st July and will manage the association's daily operations. This employment is a major step towards professionalism by reducing the load of work of the voluntary Board but also a step to increase support for Wikimedians and the communication with the Wikimedia Foundation. She is 47 years of age and has acquired a Master of Humanities from the University of Lausanne, plus diplomas in cultural and social management, accounting and financial management. In recent years, Chantal Ebongué worked with Lausanne Third Age University. She was hired 10 years ago, when this association was a small local association and needed to take the direction of professionalization. Now, Lausanne Third Age University is one of the biggest in Switzerland with 100 volunteers, 13 teachers and 2 staff, dealing with 200 lectures, 30 courses, 20 cultural journeys and about 3000 participants per year. Mrs. Ebongué won’t be only an administrative staff, she agreed to be in charge of the search for new GLAM partners. She also has a strong experience of working with volunteers, NPO’s management, and fundraising. While in charge of the daily operations of the chapter, she will also have a strong mission regarding you, our members. She will take care of the quarterly reporting in 4 languages, for you but also for our fellow chapters and the Wikimedia Foundation. She will act as a facilitator for and between our communities, helping us and free knowledge in Switzerland to grow. Like other chapters, Wikimedia CH now chooses the way of professionalism to strengthen the basis of our chapter and to help you Wikimedia CH members to realize your projects. Wikimedia Austria paid for his travel. Wikimedia Sweden has a very sophisticated setup of CiviCRM on top of Drupal, (mis-)using CiviCRM for their bookkeeping and using the tools of CiviCRM in conjunction with their own modules to handle fundraising and membership management, beyond the regular features of CiviCRM. After I have implemented the newest version of Drupal and CiviCRM for Wikimedia Austria we meet now to upgrade WMSE's code to work with the new Drupal and CiviCRM versions, make it more versatile to be used for other chapters and enhanced it. We spent 2,5 days of hacking and coding. The good news are: All modules now work with Drupal 7 and CiviCRM 4. We also managed to re-write big parts of the code, made it more modular and internationalised. Many settings have been moved outside the codebase and have been made configurable. The Donation module has been rewritten completely and got its own module interface so we could move code for payment providers into sub-modules. So far we support Payson and Direct Debit. Payson is fully functional since today, so making a Paypal module is very easy now which I will do as soon as I have received the details about the Paypal account of Wikimedia Austria. We got commit access to the Subversion repository of Wikimedia Foundation, so all our work is available online and can ge used and enhanced: http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/wikimedia/branches/wmse_civicrm/ There are still some open issues including bug reports to the CiviCRM developers. The remaining work will take about another 2,5 days I guess, finishing up some data that needs to be inserted once a donation or a membership renewal is done, fixing regular donations and creating the Paypal module.
