Hi Shrinivasan,

Please note that the copyrights of the content of articles on publications
( newspapers, magazines) resides with the publisher.

For example, look at the bottom of this article
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/article2719118.ece

"*Republication or redissemination of the contents of this screen are
expressly prohibited without the written consent of The Hindu. *"

I am just sharing the contents of the article to the list in good faith,
while at the same time acknowledging the copyrights of
the original publisher. Treat it as a legal disclaimer from my side ! :)
I have to do this as this is a publicly archived ( & mirrored too )
mailing list.
Share at own risk !

2011-12-15 Thread CherianTinu Abraham
Thanks Ravi.
Btw it was a not a press release. ( meaning we didn't write the contents
and they didn't publish it blindly)
It was an article entirely written by the reporter. Yes, we contacted the
reporter in the first place and then gave our "inputs" :)
I know what you actually meant, but "Press release" refers differently in
the PR/Media world, hence the clarification.

Here is the image of the print edition http://twitpic.com/7twj95 (Thanks
Bala for the photo.)

Praveen Do you mean this bug ?
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29005

The bug speaks itself .

From a quick reading I felt what you were asking is to use not
properly forked font projects in webfonts, when santhosh took a stand
to use fonts them from upstream.

On Normalization of characters, it is an optional feature, for
visibility of some chillus , that can be disabled in user settings if
needed.
It perfectly makes sense for me, since dual encoding is an issue in
Malayalam , and the fix need to be on Unicode . The Webfonts hack is
just a positive step and optional fix to ensure, people will not be
missed from accessing knowledge in wikipedia , based on browser
restrictions.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Webfonts deployment on Indic Wikiprojects

2011-12-15 Thread Praveen Prakash
I haven't seen any communication in any open platform with Malayalam
Community members about this matter. A few weeks before I had a brief
discussion with Santhosh about webfonts. But it was nothing about webfonts'
rendering bugs. Infact, popular (and beautiful) Malayalam fonts are open
licensed, but there are other rendering bugs. Issue I raised was about an
unnessessory char code change doing by webfonts which I felt a propaganda
pushing in favor of his idea about some characters, and which need
additional scripts on both client (= additional bandwidth) and server. But
Santhosh quit the thread claiming my concerns are my pure imaginations. :)
Naturally thread died.

I know Malayalam Wikimedian 'Vssun' tried to have an open conversation on
Gerard's talk page, after Gerard's notice, but didn't see any development.
As far as now I know no one, who was sure about webfonts deployment on ml
projects.

I certainly do not want webfonts in its current form in any of the
Malayalam Wikiprojects. But I want to know why Malayalam is excluded from
this deployment and I want to know why such a code deployed on many other
wikies.

I personally don't like Santhosh's enthusiasm to fly his scripts on
wikimedia servers, based on his "I am correct, I am correct, I am the only
correct" attitude.

If webfonts is too bad for your language, I urge you to file a bug for
removing it.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Insights from GLAMcamp Amsterdam

2011-12-15 Thread Noopur
Hey,

This presentation is not for audio/video. This came up since someone needed
a presentation for Photographers. Why I have used Commons interchangeably
is because I assume Arnav is going to speak to them about Licensing
(Creative Commons) as well as Wikimedia Commons. That is why I kept two
slides for both. I will change them to two clear slides in that case. For,
NPOV and uploading policies, I was refering to this:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Project_scope
Will change the archive bit too (thanks for the heads up!)
And, Featured images should be an excellent end :) (thanks again, you shall
be given a kitten soon!)
Warmly
Noopur

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Insights from GLAMcamp Amsterdam

2011-12-15 Thread Lodewijk
Hi,

Nice work! I am not very at home in Prezi, so some suggestions by email:

* Maybe it is better to call Wikimedia a "movement" to avoid confusion when
they encounter Wikimedia India
* In the file formats you seem to miss .OGG (sound/video)
* It is probably better to never say "Commons" like we do, but always
"Wikimedia Commons". Otherwise people get confused with Creative Commons.
* Is NPOV really relevant in Wikimedia Commons?
* Suggesting to dig up archives is dangerous - we have some bad experiences
in Israel with that. The danger is that they dig up photos taken by other
people of themselves. Maybe reword to "your old photographs" and focus on
authorship rather than (physical) ownership?
* Maybe add something about Featured images: if they submit really good
images, they might end up getting that status?

Anyway, hope it is useful,

Lodewijk

I made a little something on Commons and photography (have avoided any wiki

It's on prezi so you can edit and then put it in a ppt to share offline as
well!

No change in typing habit, it was just broken and not working in those
browsers in OSX. We just made it working. We did not change any
existing working key to an alternate key.

On the other hand Keyboard layout change requests often comes through
bugzilla from community and get reviewed by community. So its upto the
community to update the documentation in local language.

Anyway any changes that are not "fixes" will be communicated.

Having said that there is a small user interface update coming
tentatively next week's deployment - the menu will not be visible by
moving the mouse over the links of webfonts and Narayam. Menu will be
visible when user click on the links.
You can see this change in translatewiki.net.

There is also another update for Narayam, to make the menu position
correct in LTR and RTL and to prevent it crossing screen width. It is
a bug fix.

These changes are applicable for both Narayam and Webfonts.

Thanks
Santhosh

That is true. Community is definitely NOT interested to know the technical
details of all the updates.

But these type of changes (like the change in shortcut key) which affect
the typing habit of users needs to be communicated to commuity (here Indic
wikimedians), at least in this list.

2011-12-15 Thread Bala Jeyaraman
Per Srikanth's request: here is the report from Prasanna Venkatesh one of
the attendees of the meetup as posted on the event's facebook page (
http://www.facebook.com/events/192614487481512/)
Here i share what happened in Wikipedia meet up held at coimbatore:

We arrived there at coimbatore by early morning and joined with new friends
at coimbatore, Karthikeyan
Savithriwho received us
there with warm welcome and we entered into KGiSL campus
around 11 am and the event started only after we arrived there.

1. Srikanth Ramakrishnan
who was the first
speaker to start with meet up, shared his
experience with us and to tell about him, he is editing wikipedia articles
right from the age of 13 (8th standard) and now he has got around 10,000
articles being edited in the span of 6.5 years.

2. Arrived Mr. Bala, Admin and an active wikipedian especially handling
Tamil section of wikipedia and he was an programmer in an MNC and now he is
self-employed. Mr. Bala started with the basics of wikipedia and covered
the following:
i. What is wikipedia?
ii. Wikipeida - by the people, of the people and for the people.
iii. Advantage of wikipedia being let open for public editing.
iv. Demo on how to become a user, contributor to wikipedia.
v. General and basic rules for starting and writing an article with proper
reference.
vi. Tamizh wiki oodaga(media) poati - any one can participate and submit
your own photography regarding Tamizh and its culture, people ect. and you
have the chance to win US. 200$
vii. Tools like wikimedia (Mediawiki, wiki source, etc.) are discussed.
viii. Technical part of wikipedia is discussed.

Finally we had a Photo-session and greeted each other and it was good time
together and we gained knowledge over how to contribute the above things
and soon after at the evening we created a account for us in wikipedia..
and now roaming around with camera in hand :p

Thanks Geard for notice it. :)

Actually Shrinivasan didn't mentioned the contest upload wizard. It is

[Wikimediaindia-l] mediawiki-uploader

2011-12-15 Thread Shrinivasan T
Friends.

Tamil Wikipedia announced a Media Contest to increase the commons
media files like photos, audio and video in the wikipedia world.
see the announcement here.
http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contest/en

To upload the photos there are two ways available so far.

1. The web based upload wizard
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard

2. Java based upload tool - Commonist
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Tools/Commonist

We have to provide a detailed filename and description to the images
for uploading.

When we have a bunch of photos to upload, we have to select them,
crop, or edit them before uploading.

Found that that "GThumb Image Viewer" can show the files, edit the
files and add IPTC tags to the images.

We can view, edit, delete, rotate, crop and add the required Description
and Title to the images
for uploading to wikimedia commons.

How to upload the files?
There are two tools already.
But, I wanted to plugin to any image viewer to upload to wikimedia
commons directly.
No image viewer has that plugin.

DigiKam has it, but due to some issues, the mediawiki plugin is not released.

So, I started to write my own script for uploading all the files in a
folder to upload to mediawiki.

Here is it.
http://code.google.com/p/mediawiki-uploader/

Usage details are available in INSTALL and README files.

Thanks for the wikipedia users Surya and Sodabottle for their valuable
suggestions.

Please report if there are any issues.

Provide your suggestions for improving too.

Thanks.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Pune hackathon scheduled 10-12 February 2012

2011-12-15 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)

Op 15 dec. 2011 om 09:38 heeft Srikanth Ramakrishnan
het volgende geschreven:

> Aah, well. Will the Hackathon be India specific.

There are multiple interpretations of that question, I think. I'll try to cover
all interpretations I can think of.

FYI: This is all tentative.

Yesterday we came up with a focus for this developer event on gadgets, mobile
and language support.

The Wikimedia Foundation will have to ensure that there is a healthy seed
ratio. A seed here is someone knowledgeable enough to actually transfer
knowledge about the technology and bring the junior level attendees (hopefully)
to a higher skill and knowledge level, so that they in turn will be able to
create more value by themselves and are motivated to be more engaged. For now,
it looks like we may be able to have between 8 and 10 people of the Wikimedia
Foundation staff attend. That means we can have a maximum of about 50
attendees for the in depth sessions.

As we have seen during the developer events in Mumbai and Pune a few weeks ago,
we will probably get a group of people that will be interested in very
different things. Mobile has both client side "app" components, as well as
MediaWiki core and extension components - the scope is not necessarily India
here, although communities in India can of course benefit from generic
features. For gadgets, especially when we are talking global gadgets, a feature
of the upcoming ResourceLoader2 (short: RL2), things like internationalisation
and localisation may be a point of interest, but hard core JavaScript/jQuery
user contributed feature development for multiple wikis could also be an area
of interest. India or global? You tell me :).

Language support probably IS going to be aimed at India. It hardly makes sense
to focus on for example African language support from Pune; we should try and
make the most out of the very diverse knowledge pool that a national knowledge
and education centre like Pune has to offer.

That's all I have to share for now. Hope it can satisfy your hunger for
information for now!

I expect that Sumana will be making more formal announcements soon wrt to
eligibility, registration, etc. shortly.

No, Wikipedia is not non-commercial in this regard. It's a very
frequent misunderstanding, though - the first article i created in the
English Wikipedia was speedily deleted because of this ;)

In short, materials brought into Wikipedia must be free for usage
commercially, too. The full explanation is here:

The link to the page is on the meetup page on Meta.
Perhaps, Bala, Subha or Ansuman could copy it here
It would explain things from a newcomers point of view.

This is awesome! I was speaking to Hisham about compiling a repository of

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India Chapter November report 2011.

2011-12-15 Thread Naveen Francis
Dear Wikimedia community,

The highlights of the month of November for the Wikimedia Chapter (India)
are provided below:
 Administrative matters Membership

The Chapter membership stands at 185 as of 30 November 2011. This is nearly
double the number of members we had two months ago. The Chapter saw an
increase of 72 members who applied for spot membership at WikiConference
2011 organized last month in Mumbai.
 Donations

Dr Amit Keshri became the first person to donate to our Chapter. We express
our sincere thanks to Dr Keshri and others for their generous contributions
towards the young chapter.
Total donations received in Nov 2011 - INR 3601.
Average donations in Nov 2011 - INR 900.25.
 FCRA

We have applied for FCRA prior permission under the Foreign Contribution
(Regulation) Act with the Government of India on 5 November 2011 to be able
to receive funds
[1]from
Wikimedia Foundation. The expected time for processing is 3 to 4
months.

New organizations like ours can receive foreign contributions after seeking
project based prior permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs. We are
seeking permission so as to receive the grant amount allotted to us by the
Wikimedia Foundation in the United States

Another alternative is to apply for FCRA registration, which will
facilitate the receipt of foreign contributions. However, such permissions
are only granted to organizations with a proven track record of function in
their chosen field of work for a period of three years.
 Wiki Conference India 2011

The first Annual India WikiConference 2011 [1] was organized in Mumbai on
18-20 November 2011 at the University of Mumbai. The conference was jointly
hosted by the Wikimedia community in Mumbai and the chapter, along with
scores of volunteers from around the country. This was the first time that
the Indian Wikimedia community has come together to participate at a
national level to organize a conference at this scale.[2] The conference
organizing team was lead by Pranav Curumsey (Chair), Pradeep Mohandas
(Treasurer) and Moksh Juneja (Secretary).[3]

Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, inaugurated the conference by
delivering a keynote on "Community Building: The Wiki Way in India". He
also said that this event was probably one of the largest Wikimedia events
in the world. Approximately 700 delegates from all over the country
attended the three day national conference. Full and partial scholarships
were given to 98 awardees out of 7070 applicants. MOre than 50
sessions[4]focused on community building, improving quality of
articles, Mediawiki,
establishing partnerships, Wikipedia India Education Program and sharing of
experiences and best practices. Some of the invited speakers included
Professor Krishna Kumar, Anand Kumar and Arnab Goswami. The state of Indic
Wikiprojects track showcased the current state of each Wikimedian community
in India. The conference also received very impressive and enthusiastic
coverage from the national and international media.[5]

As a part of the Chapter track, an overview[6] was presented by President
Arjuna Rao Chavala. The "Noteworthy Wikimedian Recognition" ceremony[7] was
anchored by Arun Ramarathnam, member of the executive committee which
honored several Wikimedians across different Wikiprojects pertinent to
India.[8]

Images and presentations from the conference have been uploaded to the
Wikimedia Commons[9].

Chapter thanks the organizing team for doing a phenomenal job for making
this event successful, and to to all the chapter members and volunteers
spread across the country who contributed so much of their time and effort.
Chapter also thanks Wikimedia Foundation and all other sponsors for their
support and cooperation.
 City and Language SIG

The Wikimedia Chapter is proud to announce the first batch of City and
Language SIG Chairs[10] from its members as given below:

   - Odiya SIG - Subhashish Panigrahi (Odiya user page of
Subhashish).

   - Bengali SIG - Jayanta Nath.

   - Sanskrit SIG Swaroop
Rao.

We look forward to your continued support and active participation in our
activities.

Report is present at http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Reports/November_2011_Report

Best,

On behalf of Wikimedia Chapter (India)

Thanks,
Naveen Francis

Small correction, this fix was not done during hackathon, but before
that. And for Opera in OSX, shortcut is control+command+m.

We post the i18n deployment notes in Mediaiwiki-i18n list , one or two
days before deployment.
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-i18n

Gerard blogs about the deployment , see
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2011/12/12/going-live-december-12-2011/ and
he plans to do this blog post for every deployment.

If anybody is interested particularly in some extension, they can
follow all the commits to that path in subversion For eg:
https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Code/MediaWiki&path=%2Ftrunk%2Fextensions%2FWebFonts
gives all the code changes happened in webfonts.

I am not sure whether it is really required to post these changes
every week here, because not every one is interested in reading the
code changes. I hope the code review page helps to find out all the
changes for an extension/component

Another way to find out planned revisions for i18ndeploy is looking at
this tag: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/tag/i18ndeploy

[Wikimediaindia-l] Narayam updates

2011-12-15 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi all,

Attention : Indic communities using Narayam extension. Other Indic
communities which don't have Narayam please do read below, I have a note
for you too

As of now Malayalam,Tamil,Odiya,Sanskrit,Assamese,Sinhala communities use
Narayam. Narayam is also deployed on Commons. Most of the communities had
got the extension few months back, but there have
been consistent improvements / bug fixes. Looks like people are not aware
of those changes and started asking Shiju where can they know more.I am
writing on 2 major things that was done to Narayam recently because of the
bugs we(Tamil community) filed and fixes for them had caused an
overall impact.

Shortcut key on Mac :- Refer bug[1] for details, in summary the shortcut
key is now dynamic based on browser / OS combination so that the shortcut
works. Control+G is new shortcut on Mac largely. This was done
during Hackathon. //Surprise surprise, more Indic users on mac :)

Beta maps :- Refer bug[2] for details, in summary, if you have seen more
input methods previously and started seeing lesser methods in last couple
of days, its probably because of this. We did not want untested keyboard
mappings live on WikiProjects. Beta maps will enable people to test newly
added maps(bunch of inscript maps were added as part of Hackathon /
Translation sprint) to be tested on translatewiki, only after a community
member certifies it, it will be seen in wikimedia sites. This was done last
week.

There are more bugs reported by others and the software keeps changing, so
If you want to follow Narayam in close detail, subscribe to the feed[3].

i18n team,
Some of us know, you push i18n patches every Monday. Can you also give a
feed for recent changes in patch *every week*, so we could see if something
relevant to us changed in the patch and test so that we may not miss any
regression caused and be quick to report issues. I know wikitech wiki has
the logs somewhere on deployment(forgot now), but a plain text feed will
help and save much time for many folks.

To those communities who have not taken up Narayam and use old javascript
solution :-
The Javascript solution is not an ideal one now, though it served the
purpose when it was built. Narayam is supported better / technically
superior and as an extension is fairly stable. Unlike webfonts, Narayam
will be deployed only if someone asks for and that should be the way..You
can test through http://translatewiki.net report bugs(Ideally
narayam shouldn't have bugs since Junaid took the maps which already
existed in typing solution), get things fixed, call for
community consensus and getting them deployed. I also request Shiju (who
keeps interacting with various communities, to give a push on this to Indic
wikipedians)

To those communities which don't have any input method solution :-
Please invest some time, the returns are really great. Juniad / i18n team
will help you get Narayam.
