Re: [WISPA] TV Whitespaces

2008-11-18 Thread Rick Harnish
Joe,

It entirely depends on how many broadcast TV stations are in the NOLA area.
Obviously, there are more whitespaces in rural areas because there are less
TV broadcasters. Municipal areas will have proportionately less whitespaces
available because those areas inherently have more broadcasters.

Respectfully,
Rick Harnish

[WISPA] FYI Note: I have joined Aperto

2008-11-18 Thread Patrick Leary
Hi folks,

I just wanted to drop a note to the list that I have joined Aperto and
thus my Sageni consulting business will not be active. It is a great
move for me since Aperto now has a strong and primary commitment to the
WISP market, especially regarding 3.65 GHz where Aperto's historic
leadership with the 802.16 MAC can be put to good use. Most of you know
that my heart in this business is with the WISP space. Aperto is
U.S.-based and right-sized such that this market is a primary focus.
That fact and the respect I (and my former organization) have always had
for advanced technical competencies of Aperto were key to my decision to
join. Once I received direct and personal commitment from the new CEO
and his staff here about how central YOU are to the company now, I
agreed to join.

Please wish me luck and let me know if I can help.

Jack, this also explains why Sageni did not join WISPA. I believe Aperto
is now a vendor member, but if not, please invoice us immediately.

Regards to all,

Patrick

[WISPA] DTV transition

2008-11-18 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181
I do hope all of you are ready for the new DTV channels! Just got this
today and thought I'd pass it along.

 For Immediate Release

Are you ready for Digital TV? Starting in February, 2009, analog TV
signals will no longer be available in many areas. To ensure continued
enjoyment of your favorite programs, you'll need to purchase a new digital
 TV-ready receiver or a set-top converter box.

But that's not all you'll need. Due to their continuously-varying
amplitudes, analog-TV signals can roughen and damage the surfaces of older
 and heavily-used television antenna elements.

Composed of binary ones and zeros, modern state-of-the art digital TV
signals can bounce off roughened antenna surfaces, weakening signals and
rendering some digital TV signals completely unwatchable.

Instead of replacing that older and expensive outdoor antenna, you can
recondition it. After all, you wouldn't throw away your automobile because
its finish gets weathered and dull, would you? No... you'd wash and wax
 it!

Quintidigital Discount Products, Inc., announces DigiWash (tm) and DigiWax
(tm), two products guaranteed to increase your digital TV viewing
 satisfaction.

Before you connect your new digital TV receiver or converter to an older
outdoor antenna, wash the antenna's elements with DigiWash, an ecofriendly
and biodegradable cleanser that removes roughened analog-signal residue
 and bird droppings.

When the elements are dry, simply apply a light coating of DigiWax (tm) to
the antenna's elements, buff with a chamois or lamb's-wool mitt, and
you're assured of DTV reception that's Every Bit As Good (sm).

Manufactured with lubricants produced by farm-raised pythons and
free-range rattlesnakes, DigiWash and DigiWax will be available in
high-end consumer-electronics stores and audiophile boutiques on April
 1st, 2009.

[WISPA] News you can use: Net Neutrality Advocates In Charge Of Obama Team Review of FCC

2008-11-18 Thread David E. Smith
Susan Crawford, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School,
and Kevin Werbach, a former FCC staffer, organizer of the annual tech
conference Supernova http://www.supernova2008.com/, and a Wharton
professor, will lead the Obama-Biden transition team's review of the FCC.

Both are highly-regarded outside-the-Beltway experts in telecom policy,
and they've both been pretty harsh critics of the Bush administration's
telecom policies in the past year.

for PTP. 700 PTP is not necessary in my opinion.

I am concerned about 700 Mhz antenna sizes. Aren't sectors going to be
huge to get the 4 watt at the antenna? I am also concerned about the
CPE Panel size. Going from a 15 Panel to a 20 panel gives us a lot
more wind issues at the client.

Don't get me wrong I am excited about the whitespace out come. I
appreciated the work of the Whitespace committee.

We have tower owners who are concerned about the sizes of our antennas
now. Change from a 12 foot 900 Omni to a 16+ foot 700 will not get rave
 reviews.

Sounds like crap to me. I probably have one of the oldest VHF\UHF setups

Chicago's TV stations and I received signal just fine... until the preamp

Re: [WISPA] TV Whitespaces PtP Backhaul

2008-11-18 Thread John Valenti
Could you elaborate on why this is a bad idea?

I'm slightly interested in it for low cost connections. In my current
area, I don't have a problem finding grain legs for AP sites. These
would be dense enough that I could build a great network with white
spaces cells and 5GHz backhauls.

But if I look farther north in Michigan, the forests are denser and
the grain legs disappear. The terrain is flat enough that I can't use
mountains for cheap tower sites. And none of the 900-2.4-3.65-5GHz
radios are going thru the trees.

It seems like a PtP backhaul that would work ten(?) miles thru trees
would be a great cost savings over building towers. Maybe use two
channels for full duplex. The rural areas that I'm looking at have
over twenty channels free. (thanks Brian Webster for your kmz!)

Re: [WISPA] DTV transition

2008-11-18 Thread Patrick Leary
For three years I received my content off-air only while I lived in the
Silicon Valley. The quality of the signal off-air was amazing and really
popped off my plasma. Getting it direct with no compression...and for
free with a small antenna...was really great. I'll be doing it again
once I have the time to install a roof antenna on my new home in FL.

The best web site I found to select the gain of the antenna and set the
azimuth is www.antennaweb.org. It gives you a complete list of channels
available in your area and will display a street level view how to align
your antenna. I always believed WISPs should add this installation to
their business. This might enable you to somewhat package a triple
play offer using the off-air for content and the wireless for Internet
and voice.

[WISPA] Indoor Access Points

2008-11-18 Thread Josh Luthman
I am looking to see what other members use for indoor access points.
Primarily I'm looking for a residential install and hotels.

I've been using the Senao/Engenius equipment for quite a while but I have
encountered several issues over the years and I am hoping to find a
replacement low-cost product.

Let me guess you have a pile of dead Engenius 3220 that wont transmit
any more. I have 9 myself. I am looking for a good inside AP that
works with POE as well.

Ubiquity NanoStation2. Works great. There are cheaper options like the

Steve,

Actually I have more of a mountain of the outdoor units. I used a skid and
fork lift to get them to the dumpster. Though my real problem with these
radios is their inability to work well for a long duration of time with most
laptops and their inability to work well whatsoever with Intel wireless
cards. Regardless of who's fault it is - Engenius or Intel - Intel is in
laptops, Engenius needs to adapt to this.

Charles,

These will be indoor installs so the durability and operating conditions are
not a big deal to me. I am interested in knowing if anyone has deployed
them in a hotel/hotspot, though!

Define low-cost and include what functionality you're looking for

NS2 is about $70-80 depending on where you get them. You can have a
RB411, R52 and indoor case for around the same price (ok..a little
more) and have a better OS (even certified now). You can, also, do
a crossroads with indoor case at around $110-115.

I just got an LED TV. Wonder of wonders, THIS one picks up some channels.
Even the old analog stuff. There are a few digital ones as well.

Guess the TV receiver is just as important as our gear.

I'd not say that the OTA channels are any better than the Dish Network ones
though. Either way, going from SDTV to HDTV and 27 to 46 is pretty
amazing!

This might enable you to somewhat package a triple
play offer using the off-air for content and the wireless for Internet
 and voice.

I do hope all of you are ready for the new DTV channels! Just got this
today and thought I'd pass it along.

 For Immediate Release

Are you ready for Digital TV? Starting in February, 2009, analog TV
signals will no longer be available in many areas. To ensure continued

enjoyment of your favorite programs, you'll need to purchase a new
digital TV-ready receiver or a set-top converter box.

But that's not all you'll need. Due to their continuously-varying
amplitudes, analog-TV signals can roughen and damage the surfaces of
older and heavily-used television antenna elements.

Composed of binary ones and zeros, modern state-of-the art digital TV
signals can bounce off roughened antenna surfaces, weakening signals
and rendering some digital TV signals completely unwatchable.

Instead of replacing that older and expensive outdoor antenna, you can

recondition it. After all, you wouldn't throw away your automobile
because its finish gets weathered and dull, would you? No... you'd
 wash and wax it!

Quintidigital Discount Products, Inc., announces DigiWash (tm) and

 Folks,

Just would like to run an informal poll to determine the market for
Fixed White Spaces devices over the next 2 - 3 years. If you could
reply (offlist preferred) to this request I'd like to pass the demand
over to our product line managers who set product development priority.

 512 - 698 MHz
 White Spaces Demand

Expected Street Price: About what we're paying now for wifi type gear.
Slightly higher might be ok. Much higher won't be any different than what
 we can't sell already.

 Upper Bound: Lost me here.

 2009

 2010

2011: These all depend on what the cost is. If it's near what today's
gear costs I'll start deploying new systems right away. If not I'll
mostly have to wait for the prices to drop.

[WISPA] whitespaces, take two

2008-11-18 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
We need to be ready to be involved with this process if there is a way to do
so (from the nprm)

We anticipate that the capabilities of products for operating in this
spectrum will develop

and evolve over time and that much will be learned about the potential for
unlicensed TVBDs to cause

interference to licensed services and how to avoid that interference. We may
therefore need to revisit

these rules to make adjustments both to provide more flexibility for
unlicensed devices and to refine the

protections for licensed services. Consistent with our objective to allow
unlicensed TVBDs to operate

with the most flexibility and capabilities possible consistent with
protection of licensed services, we are

directing our staff to conduct a review and report to the Commission in two
years from the date of this

Second Report and Order on the state of these devices, including the types
of devices on the market, the

extent of their implementation, technical developments, any interference
problems that may have arisen,

and aspects of the rules that should be altered to increase features and
opportunities for use or to address

conflicts.

[WISPA] NS2 Feedback

2008-11-18 Thread Charles Wyble
All I can say is WOW!!!

I deployed an NS2 in a client mode deployment for testing and put it
through heavy usage (lots of voip/downloads/youtube etc)
for 2 weeks. It worked flawlessly.

I then deployed it as a hotspot in El Segundo CA and it's working great.

Initial deployment was under the counter (closed on 3 sides) at a
merchant and we got pretty good coverage of the whole strip mall.

Tonight I moved it up near the ceiling and coverage (as expected)
dramatically improved. We now provide coverage to 1 square block
or so.

I can't wait to load up a custom firmware image and start deploying a mesh.

NS2: 100.00
Wireless coverage you can count on: Priceless

One of our wisp clients (a good size one with around 1K paying clients) has
been testing the ns2, and he reports some sort of problem that shows up as a
steady loss of preformance over time. They start out working great, but
after a few days of continuous operation the net transfer rate drops way
down until the unit is power cycled. Memory leak (or maybe a power supply
issue)?

Have you any experience with the R52/h or Compex cards? If so how do the

Re: [WISPA] Outdoor Rated Enclosures - Humor

We actually did that. We used Outdoor stainless steel garage refrigerators
to house Alvarion equipment on towers and it worked extremely well!!

Here's another one:
I don't know if any of y'all ever heard the ramblings of what we did with
our Navini equipment years ago. But, let's just say that we ended up with
data centers in the sky which were 12 1/2' tall by 3 1/2' wide and 3'
deep. They weighed 3,600 pounds, contained Navini BTS equipment, a serial
interface router, a Cisco Catalyst 5505, remote power cycling equipment and
2 RV air conditioners. You entered through the bottom of the box and
there was a catwalk underneath the entrance for safety! They were 1/2 steel
lined with Kevlar (it's Texas!!) and blown over with polyurethane!

All this at 460 feet AGL on 480' guyed towers. We saved a TON (ha!) on cable
costs @ 27 runs of LMR-900 each at 500'.

We later moved on to a 9' cylinder design that had 2 19 racks on either
side of the entrance on the bottom.

I think all but 1 of them have been taken down, but that 1 has been through
2 hurricanes and is still serving clients!

[WISPA] unlicensed under 2ghz

2008-11-18 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Hi All,

In reading the FCC's TV whitespaces report and order I came across this
statement:
Supporters of a licensed approach also hold that there is no need for
additional spectrum

for unlicensed devices. In this regard, Qualcomm submits that there is no
evidence that consumers have

had to return unlicensed devices because the unlicensed spectrum is too
crowded.48 The Association for

Maximum Service Television and the National Association of Broadcasters, in
joint comments

(MSTV/NAB), add there is over 100 megahertz of unlicensed spectrum below 2
GHz and that 255 MHz

of spectrum in the 5 GHz band was made available for unlicensed use in 2003
and so there is plenty of

spectrum available for unlicensed use.49 The White Space Coalition counters
these arguments, stating

that the propagation characteristics of the TV band are superior to the
other unlicensed bands for many

applications and that none of the other unlicensed spectrum is below 900
MHz

Um, where is there 100mhz of unlicensed spectrum between 900mhz and 2 gig?
What's available that I haven't been using yet?

marlon

Ubiquity NanoStation2. Works great. There are cheaper options like the
Loco or Pico. I like the durability and operating conditions of the
outdoor one and find it worth the extra 50.00.

Is it just me or is it fast becomingno matter the 802.11a/b/g

They seem to be pretty cool.

All I can say is WOW!!!

I deployed an NS2 in a client mode deployment for testing and put it
through heavy usage (lots of voip/downloads/youtube etc) for 2 weeks. It
worked flawlessly.

We now provide coverage to 1 square block or so.

I can't wait to load up a custom firmware image and start deploying a
mesh.

NS2: 100.00
Wireless coverage you can count on: Priceless

All Ruckus gear either has 6 or 12 antennas depending on the model. But if
a reflection is the best signal from a device, or sending a packet via a
reflection is the best path it will take it.

These things really amaze me... especially for the price

Yes Jack, I guess they have 6 or 7 antennas ver, horiz and 45* and they lock
on whatever is necessary . I do know it held a laptop through 5 exterior
mesh and plaster walls apx 40 feet apart and we still had 4 bars and 5
bars after the forth wall. We have also used them in metal buildings, and
had extreme coverage between machinery. The only failure we have had was
repeting with the metroflex 3 times from a Linksys ap. But it could have
been the Linksys.
Everywhere we have placed them, have been very difficult wireless
environments, and the customers have noticed the difference and didn't mind
the added cost.

Re: [WISPA] Indoor Access Points

2008-11-18 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
Jack, Yes.

They use multi-element / multi-antenna, adaptive beam forming, along with
some very nifty smart mesh.

We replaced 10 buffalo's running dd-wrt (for a large sorrority house / about
60 + active College Students) with 3 Ruckus AP's. Our site survey showed
that two would cover it , but we decided to put in the 3rd as a 'filler'.
Two AP's are wired (as root) and 3rd AP is a Mesh.

The buffalo's would choke once every 10-20 days, requiring some TLC... The
Rucks AP' have been Setup and forget about them If it was not for a
power outage we would been seeing about 120 + days straight up time.

They also do some neat 'firewalling' within the unit.. We are using a mode
that allows the Clients (notebook users) to get IP's from the LAN side of
the AP's, and ONLY ACCESS THE INTERNET... They cannot access any IP's on the
LAN side of the AP's.

This is the G stuff.. Their N models with the new software are even more
impressive..

 Steve,

Actually I have more of a mountain of the outdoor units. I used a
skid and fork lift to get them to the dumpster. Though my real
problem with these radios is their inability to work well for a long
duration of time with most laptops and their inability to work well
whatsoever with Intel wireless cards. Regardless of who's fault it is
 - Engenius or Intel - Intel is in laptops, Engenius needs to adapt to
this.

 Charles,

As far as I know, the white spaces will only be channels 21-51 excluding
channel 37. That's why they aren't included in the file. I could be wrong on
that but seems like I pulled that from some document somewhere. That was
prior to the ruling. If you find information to the contrary I'll update the

posted a copy of the file on my web site. Scroll down the home page to the

Yes.
Also very handy in keeping the beer cans cold... Note the strategic
positioning on the tall tower.. Allows for a restful pause during ascends

You have to admit, it is pretty innovative, and very comparable to the

had extreme coverage between machinery. The only failure we have had was
repeting with the metroflex 3 times from a Linksys ap. But it could have
 been the Linksys.
Everywhere we have placed them, have been very difficult wireless
environments, and the customers have noticed the difference and didn't mind
 the added cost.

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti 3.65

2008-11-18 Thread Mark Nash
Using StarOS, we have tested them with 3.5GHz antennas. They got what we
would expect them to get with respect to SNR, with a slight loss due to the
3.5GHz antennas.

Two issues...

1. We purchased some of the original XR3's, but then they came out with the
new version XR3 - 3.7 which had different center frequencies so they would
not associate with the original XR3 that we had at the AP.

2. We have had 3 of the XR3 - 3.7 radios that have either lost a
significant amount of signal from the AP, or stopped associating altogether.
On the StarOS forums, there was some talk of this be attirbuted to non
grounding thet antennas. But as it stands, I think we had 3 bad radios,
then the 3 that we originally bought that are useless now due to the center
frequency issue. At $260 per radio, that's alot of $$ in useless radios.

I am concerned about 700 Mhz antenna sizes. Aren't sectors going to

more wind issues at the client.

Don't get me wrong I am excited about the whitespace out come. I

We have tower owners who are concerned about the sizes of our antennas
