radiant blood light terror, saucer for a dog's head star
(inspired by Jeff Harrison's constant miracles)

for every savior's saucer
a cup of hound's blood with boat

for rowing from rim to rim
from star to star

now kissing
the fresh sunk island
with dread wands

==

for every hound's saucer
a cup of savior's blood with boat

for rowing from corpse to corpse
from stare to stare

now kissing
the newly dead eye
with brave unattainable fingers

*
now anubis
upon his barque
moves outward
into the sea of terror
and the galley slaves
put their wands
to the pond's
surface
and none of them see
what the saying
above them
moves

*
now whatever cup
is used
whatever saucer broken
the seeing
stays the same

the seaing
the singing
radiant blood

what is this image alan, it look like
some hybrid form of aerial photography
possibly of an archaeology site but then
it also has the look of a core sample for
some mineral conglomerate. the toothed or parapetted
perimeter also gives it an emblematic sense.
very interesting. also loved those nearly white
hyperbolic volumes awhile back, is that the right

all day it hisses
and sometimes
my head sinks
and my hand reaches up
to rub my forehead
i'm desperate
for this voice to shut-up!
the second voice hisses
and makes me worry
all day it hisses
and sometimes
i shiver thinking over
what it says
i clench my eyes shut
try to forget this
horrible voice
i'm desperate
for this voice to shut-up!
the first voice
has become so quiet
and this makes me sad
i try to coax it awake
i show it memories

that's all it says

something about time as cyclical if i remember correctly.
this was an interesting film! (both)

The way this stutters frames to frame, along with the magnetic
attraction and repulsion between what appear to be (for me) the
central male and female figures, lovers perhaps -- we'll call them
that, that the lovers remain, almost ghosts in the transition between
the dithered daylight color and the falsified blue of (noon) twilight
-- what must have taken seconds become hours -- and then, in the end
the male lover switches, the former protag give ways to the formerly,
apparently sedentary syntag -- the static fisherman -- the importance,
the impetus of the previous protag is replaced by the impetus, by the
emergence of the new protag, the former static syntag, as protag --
they switch places, playing musical chairs or some sort so what of the
female protag, the truly primary syntag of the event -- what of her
fickle motion?

thanks HJ, I'll change it to:

It is interesting to note that Adolf Hitler

which unlike a tiny moustache cube
would not become the emblem

The Story of Adolt Fitlure

Adolt Fitlure was a farmer
who lived in Pencil Bluff, Arkansas
who lived near the "Diamond Lakes"

who would sit in the air-conditioned cab
of his John Deere supertractor
and listen to Maurice Ravel's Tzigane
on a tiny Bose CD player
or sometimes the soundtrack to
Forbidden Planet

often Adolt would look across
his cotton fields
to his lumpy Heronic windmill farmhouse
where the flag of the fractalistes
would flap

(Selah O proudest lingerie of elegy

the flag itself was a solid green field
in whose center sat
a bright purple cube
flecked with tiny diamonds
and the cube itself
roughly cracked
and pulled apart
allowing a bright red fern
to grow from within
the glowing stringy mess
of its abrutie gutworks

Adolt would lean back
in his big cushiony chair
high off the ground
surveying the bolls
he would soon harvest
and allow himself
a small fantasy

he would dream
of a svelt naiadic dudeen
a smooth and feminine pipe
which he imagined
to be the figurehead

his bald chin

Given enough "rope"
Adolt Fitlure
probably wouldn't
hang 'himself'
but he might tie up
the shaggy
freakish chimera
of a close moment
into an insane tree

and hold up a fluorescent
velvet postcard
of Socrates
and say:

YOP, YOP, YOP
HOLYSTONE AND JUNK
YOP, YOP, YOP

this being the motto
of the rural Fractalistes,

but why
"moustache cube"?

because it is so
"sad-butte-true"?

Not at all, the "moustache cube"
represents a hybrid “phylactery”
and is derived from the Greek
phylakterion and is also known
by the Aramaic word tefillin
which is arbitrarily derived
from the word totafot which means
"remembrance" which is often
replaced with the more familiar word
zicharon and might be said to
recall a now sacral "figure of speech"
not completely unlike:

“And you shall circumcise
the foreskin of your heart”
(Deut.10:16).

"Adolt Fitlure often wears
the moustache phylactery
as he ploughs the fields.."

This was fascinating! I especially thought
the Dawkins book sounded interesting.
and for what it's worth I totally agree
about the RP stuff.. I also have the one
you mention and the book on Hermits is
a fantastic read.. I think I have all the
one's you mention.. I really wish I could
get motivated to read (and do) more tech
related stuff, so thanks for the kick
in the pants! Not sure if you'd be interested
in what I'm reading but here's what I'm
working on:

starting the second chapter.. its a big book so its sort
of unwieldy to read except in a perfect situation
Comic Grotesque: Wit and Mockery in German Art, 1870-1940
this is a beautiful exhibition catalogue from the Neue Galerie in NY
Amazing discussion of Arnold Bocklin, Paul Klee, Paul Scheerbart,
Emil Nolde, Franz Stuck, Karl Valentin, the Satiric Cabaret,
Salomo Friedlander.. This is a good book for continuing
a study of the grotesque, which is really becoming my focus now..
It especially goes well with following up from the Barbara Maria
Stafford book which discusses so many references to the classical[sic]
and renaissance grotesqu.. whatever, its a totally groovy ref-book
for 'freak-studies' my new home-schooling major..

around 150 pages into..
Toy Medium by Daniel Tiffany
a sort of study of the chiasmus of the poetics of material philosophy
and the materialism of lyric poetry
he does this through a discussion of the history of automata
Kepler's treatise on snowflakes
animal magnetism, fireworks and cloud-chamber photographs
a long list of figures

this book also has a good deal of discussion on Wallace Stevens
so I'm using the Stevens Collected to put some of the quotes
back into contrext..

and the Stevens also dovetails with the grotesque studies..
it seems Stevens is sort of a hub for both the grotesque in
modern lyric and 'lyrical substance':

It says there is an absolute grotesque.
There is a nature that is grotesque within
The boulevards of the generals. Why should
We say that it is man's interior world
Or seeing the spent, unconscious shapes of night,
Pretend they are shapes of another consciousness?
The grotesque is not a visitation. It is
Not apparition but appearance, part
Of that simplified geography, in which
The sun comes up like news from Africa.

Wallace Stevens, "A Word with Jose Rodriguez-Feo"

This is quite brilliant, as the root of the word monster
comes from monstrado meaning 'to display' and with the
double resonance from techne' as an appearing

The grotesque is not a visitation. It is
Not apparition but appearance [itself]

Wallace Stevens makes one of the most important
statements to me personally and my work that
I've ever found.. or seemed like it.. [gush]

finishing up, maybe 30-60 pages left, I jumped around alot
Avital Ronell's Stupidity which has some
fascinating work on Wordsworth, Doestoevsky, etc. etc..
The stuff on wordsworth is worth the price on the book..
really interesting..

Just beginning
Bruce Sterling's Shaping Things which is
his first book about design.. not too far into this
but it seems unlike anything I've ever read by him..

nearly finished..may have lost interest
Aleister Crowley and the Ouija board by J. Edward Cornelius
This is a decent book on the history of the ouija board
and a very strange book which documents some of the
more advanced practices developed by AC and which are
still in use by the OTO. This also dovetails well
with some of my studies of Yeat's magical life.
I picked this up as I've been considering
attending the Gnostic Mass at our local very venerable
OTO temple.. Just for something to do some evening
I thought it might be stimulating in some way or another..

reading this in small chunks..
The Collected Poems of Ted Berrigan
It seems like a kind of wave went through the blogosphere
when this came out so I thought I'd pick it up
I'd read the sonnets and like those.. I really like
the Out-takes section..

reading in chunks..
Revolution of the Word ed. Jerome Rothenberg
exact change reissued this so i thought i'd pick it
up.. I really like the Marianne Moore and Charles Henri Ford..
Its a classic I guess.. good one to have around..

about half-way through..
Blake, a biography by peter Ackroyd
This is a fascinating read. Well researched
as far as I know, (though I've still to ask
a Blake prof I know) and just engrossing
marvelous snippets of rare drawings
from Blake's notebooks, "the traveler"
"pissing man" etc.. all manner of detailed
histories of the figures and times of Blake's
life.. just randomly opening the book
now I read about Thomas John's Druid Temple,
Boehme's influence.. I'm an 18th century
history hound so I just lap this stuff
up like candy..

Still plugging, maybe a third done on Jonathan Crary's
Suspension of Perception which has among other
things some nice work on the Praxinoscope-Theatre
with many illustrations of this strange device..
Good Art history - Visual Studies Book

2006-01-08 Thread Lanny Quarles
justin, this is absolutely brilliant,
and has actually given me abit of a start
because of an occurence, "the usually flickering"
between 'series' which is the monstrous process
at the heart of most paranoia, among other things..

i had just read an account/explanation of Schlegel's
take on the grotesque when the phrase

post-9/11 viral surge

just leaped out as being really apt, in terms
of Schlegel's view

let me explain

Schlegel spelled out his attitude in his 1798 Athenaum-Fragment
424 in which he connected historical events to the grotesque:

It [the French Revolution] could also be seen as the heart
and culmination of the French national character, where all
its paradoxes are concentrated; as the most terrible grotesquerie
of the age, where its..

its seems like 911 might be seen in a similiar way, though
perhaps lesser because of the constant barrage of demonism
and tragedy

at any rate if you read on, you get to some discussion
that Schegel no longer viewed history as a political event
but as a chaos unleashed by human traits (makes me think of Forbidden
Planet of course)

anyway i'm thinking more now about the dialectic of the phrase

post-9/11 viral surge

as in pre-911 viral surge
which is in effect a nod to the memics involved
in terrorist production, the kinds of teachings
which have their lineage in Hassan-I-Sabbah's history
and which obviosly still exist though suicide warriors
aren't particularly islam specific though the spectacle
might have you think so.. another example would be
yep, the tamil tigers.. or even the kamikaze'

and also the way you bring Kong in
as Kong climbed the towers in the 70's remake
with the cryptic (and spectacular rejoinder)
of Field of Dreams.. I think that's the movie title
for the Costner flick.. with the historical avatars

field of dreams as an underphrase
is really potent.. field as in radiation
and also as in games, language games,
game-theory, even mostly our politics
these days are more like a game..

If this is from a book where can I get one,
this is very striking and important stuff
I think..

Also the Tamil Tigers mention
which is iconically interesting in many ways
the Tamil tigers are battling against the Sinhalese
as you know.. Buddha died when he allowed a tiger
to eat him.. this really directly relates to the
the Title (Please Eat Yourself) which is great nod
to perhaps Gaian theory or Post-structuralist decenteredness
etc.. I don't know if I'm expressing this well, but
its terribly evocative..

also it makes me realize just how non-newsworthy
the Sri Lankan conflict has been in the west
when recently i've seen several articles talking
about a new process which involves women terrorists..
The Tamil tigers have had many famous women terrorists
but its never mentioned in these stories..
I believe Indira Gandhi herself was taken out
by a young lady.. maybe i have my facts wrong
here.. but it made me think of this as well

at any rate, shadow cabinet is also
a fine manifold..

thanks for sending this out..

Re: Chary Ode to an Apocalyptic Sandbox

2006-01-12 Thread Lanny Quarles
This is great, almost completely off balance, but there's the edge of
reason, like the headless monster crowned with what appears to be a
sponge... - Alan

yes, the sponge idea had occurred to me,
but it also looks like a calcareous brain coral
or bony brain plate

but not sure how you get "off-balance"

the actaeon figure is equisitely poised in the image
and not at all in torment, but there is the element
of the image being taken from a toy.. this is personally appropo
for me as i'm reading Daniel Tiffany's _Toy Medium_

the image actually has alot of associations i've 'toyed' with
some of them related to Bataille's Acephale of course
and there's the Jain headless cosmos images you can find
in some books on Jainist iconology.. there's also the coincidence
that in my recent poem _Qints, Puarts, p, q, Qleases, Thanp_ I used
a phrase from the 1911 silent film L'inferno:

'To hear such wrangling is
a joy for vulgar minds.'

This phrase is from the scene in the film where Bertrand Deborn
holds up his own severed head like a lantern and speaks with it..
Nowhere in the film is Bertrand Deborn's name mentioned but I
know the poem, and moreover I know Gustave Dore's illustrations
of the poem.

Now since Actaeon is headless, I don't think he'll be 'hearing'
anything.. what this is perhaps referencing is that the poem
is primarily a visual or 'brain-related' artifact; Its "horns"
are missing, the trumpets of enunciation inflected signification.

there is also a rather more vulgar pychotic/neurotic underimage
here which relates to the complicated story of Actaeon itself.
that Actaeon has been changed into a bath utensil for Diana
and possibly one for her rectum, as there is some pretty good evidence
that in the classical age, sponges on sticks were used at public
lavatories to wash the asshole.. now if we imagine the body of Diana
to be somehow different, what might happen to a brain-sponge
wiping the ass of Diana:

Diana remains an important figure in some modern mythologies. In
Freemasonry, she is considered a symbol of imagination, sensibility, and
the creative insanity of poets and artists.

Now there's some psychological discourse which relates painting
to feces play.. at any rate i toyed with that strange scenario

and then there's the strange textual palimpsestual elements which
places the phrase "helium input"

Now helium as a word is essentially a flawed artifact:

Helium was first detected on August 18, 1868 as a bright yellow line with
a wavelength of 587.49 nm in the spectrum of the chromosphere of the Sun,
by French astronomer Pierre Janssen during a total solar eclipse in India.
Janssen was at first ridiculed since no element had ever been detected in
space before being found on Earth. October 20th the same year, English
astronomer Norman Lockyer also observed the same yellow line in the solar
spectrum and concluded that it was caused by an unknown element after
unsuccessfully testing to see if it were some new type of hydrogen. Since
it was near the Fraunhofer D line he later named the new line D3,
distinguishing it from the nearby D1 and D2 double lines of sodium. He and
English chemist Edward Frankland named the element after the Greek word
for the Sun god, Helios, and, assuming it was a metal, gave it an -ium
ending (a mistake that was never corrected).

Now we have, and uncorrected mistake, the sun, and anal input..
well the first association there is easy.. Bataille's Solar Anus

so perhaps Actaeon is receiving the boon of divine poop on his brain
poop on one end, and being subjected to a flow, an instituted flow
of incorrect naming on the other.. not sure how this works
but one possible clue might be Daniel M. Kirchmann's LUXON THEORY
http://www.tardyon.de/ which states basically that all matter is light
and he goes about proving it with physics.. so here i suppose
we have a grotesque chimera of light..

something which is poised in the act of transformation
and this would all be in the lacanian symbolic i suppose

at any rate.. i simply thought the actaeon model without the head
was a little more uncanny.. so its really nothing more than me
being the bower bird artist picking his version of a shiny pebble
for his sandbox of the phantasmatic UNreal..

i mean you have the desert of the real / and then you have
the phantasmatic body of poetry which is basically ornamental
and supportive, its a structure

not to get too into this, there's a frisson of elements
involving an intertextuality

depending on what element you pick, you can generate any number of circuits..

now back to the visual notion of the piece

its supposed to look like rows of cigarettes
if you babelfished the chinese-greek-russian phrase
you might get "4 safe smokes" but i didnt reverse check
these so they might not work.. an oversight at this point

phaneronoemikon would then iconistically be the filter
but also 'philtre' or potion

so there's that

now one of the main references involves the first word of the title

Chary.. t

Re: objects of the psyche (an image pome)

2006-01-26 Thread Lanny Quarles
These shots are from the "Poet and the Young Miss" section.
Many of the other scenes have a more pronounced art nouveau decor.
I suppose the poete had a more eclectic style than what would have then
been the more chic style of AN. The buddhist elements are intriguing
as well as the marshall ornamentalia.. A seeming orientalist, which makes
a good deal of sense for the period.. This figure is perhaps an echo
of Proust's Baron de Charlus, or HK Huysman's Des Esseintes both echoes
of Robert de Montesquiou but perhaps of a more heterosexual nature. Here's
one of Montesqiou's poems translated by ex-wryting (?) member Jeffrey
Jullich (the film synopsis comes after):

The Moth

Robert de Montesquiou

O moth of night, of mystery, of aurora,
Mysterious Whistler, fallen butterfly
Paled or gilded, from dawn to penumbra,
By coil of Phoebus, oblivion of Phoebe.

I want to prick you beneath this sad vitrine:
Rare entomologist—insect so precious,
Like a point of fire, in the black of Cremorne
Gardens, blue fireworks lingering behind in the skies.

Who is as riveted as you by the scattered spark
Between the evening, blackened wind in greenery . . .
And better reddens the lantern in the gas-lit park
Where a break is long-awaited in the ennui

The gloves outlined by milky whiteness of egg-white,
That flows and glides by the lamps, at the edges,
Has always had its dwelling in your palette;
Their window-mirrors are your peerless brushes.

Here is the fireball—here the jug of roses!
Ciphers detonated, suns spinning round;
All of Ruggieri's art, ripe with amaurosis,
The mocking rocket in vermilion starry sounds.

You are juggling with it as with all high esteem;
Miraculous artist! your bengal is regal;
Your roman candle is a flower without a stem . . .
And what artisan would call himself your equal?

Ruskin did well dealing you the heaviest blow,
Your case against him is just a brighter bouquet
You draw under his nose your sword from Toledo
And your gunpowder fires a lightningbolt: touché!

The spirit shakes in you, your canvas shakes with art
You put it in your book, wear it on your forehead
Where your fairy forelock is a corn husk of stars
Attacking you head-on doesn't do any good.

Upon pains of attaching to his name a wink
Of derision in full force where yours resonates
Offering us to read in fine vinegar ink
The art of making enemies, a gift of your wits.

What is it? that resists your slender walking stick,
Both a diviner's rod and magic fairy wand
That it's pleasing to your nature, stark or slapstick
To transform gall into honey, wave into wine?

Your painting is no less ingenious and artful
For simulating true peacock from whirling sun.

And here's an entire room completely wall-papered
In eyes, eyes spellbinding and delicious,
Graceful . . . Irritated; bristling, panelled,
With a blue of fireworks that lingers in the gaze.

The fabled peacock room, la chambre de paons
That many wish to see but few have admired
Whose endless glances shine with luster, like the sun's
Igniting everywhere an unforeseen sapphire.

But eyes of beauties are still far more mystical . . .
Slender Pompeian girl confined to the hallways,
Here they are pointing from aquarelle to pastel:
Slender Venetian maiden laid out on the altar.

All of Venice flows on in these minuscule strokes
Held like a strand of hair from Venus Astarte,
The master magician of sunsets likes to joke
By unwraveling them in daylight's clarity.

Plays at parading past watercolors' yellow current,
Where sometimes a barque with rigging thin and sure
Seems an insect seized in yellow flow, waters stagnant
But whose nimble paw scratches the azure.

Here the designated ray of European
Japonoiserie—or a world, too artificial,
Of beaches, where gleaming red a series is seen
The geishas with their rainbow-colored parasols.

His seascape painted there with baubles that are squeezed
>From a tube, side-barring the sky with a clear
Net of ropes; and those misty Tamises
Making this Valparaiso sky still bluer.

His oeuvre, did I say—well, what is there to mention?
This canvas that he lifts in ratio creates
And recedes from the silhouette to the end
Differentiated beyond the art of miscreants.

Therein is the face; he searches and finds it there.
The artist is victor, the drawing is complete;
Painter works in sculpture, whose strength can dare
To extend into the canvas, at last, a heart beat.

Because his touch is drawn from life's true breast;
Not a tree is imprinted except the very rare
And to post what follows our laziness
Is a lifting of ourselves to the metal square!

Our enchanter smiles: You still wander through the room—
And it is truly our own space which, over time, cambers
But so it must be, that you inhabit this frame . . .
Where elongates, as the work goes on, the scumble.

And for us reprinted a harmless terror
Just as in tinfoil this William Wilson
Takes on form; or that other sorceror
Zoroaster, who met himself in his garden!

Yes, the eyes in portraits belong to fairies!
And

okay, my last post was upon a quikscan, and my own psychological
defect catalogue.. it's a good article.
i liked how he said flarf was collage.
and he said it was cliquish.. both seem accurate.
so anyway
this one is even moire worrisom and defected? I give up.

;;;
one thing that puzzles me, is questioning so severely
the corporate nature of google's algorhythms..

look at the ideological implications of any given word
in the english lexicon..

of english itself.. i've been looking at the Pyu language today..
what a lovely set.. why don't we all switch to Pyu! Its much prettier
at least than the latin ltters. anyway

let's look at "Admiral"
check out the wiktionary entry (i dont have my oed, my "evil" oed)

OE. amiral, admiral, OF. amiral, ultimately fr. Ar. amîr-al-bahr commander
of the sea; Ar. amîr is commander, al is the Ar. article, and amîr-al,
heard in different titles, was taken as one word. Early forms of the word
show confusion with L. admirabilis admirable, fr. admirari to admire. It
is said to have been introduced into Europe by the Genoese or Venetians,
in the 12th or 13th century. Cf. {Ameer}, {Emir}

Are we not to use the word admiral without knowing its
jaded ideologically determined history? Does anyone
recognize the hard contours of its ironic use today?

What are the ethical foundations of all language..
Was language itself originally a weapon?
or a tactical device for exploitative hunting practices?

What alot of this kind of thinking comes down to,
and which is shown rather wonderfully in Daniel Tiffany's
work about the history of atomist theory and the way
epicurian atomism was stripped of its hedonistic subtexts,
its sensualism, by proceeding generations of users.

Culturally then, what is our relationship to pleasure?
How does the historical perception of pleasure frame
our entire discourse. Do we even understand the psychic
mechanism of pleasure? Are we actually repelled by repulsion
or are we paradoxically attracted to it? The subtle dimension
of political inflection is its refraction through "the political body" of
perception itself..

we should be cognizant here of the physics of photons themselves,
of the existence of polaritons, which is a mechanical meta-particle which
travels through substance and which can sometimes regenerate a photon..
ideas when they become externalized as words or images
enact the same polaritonic mechanical force in the mind, and thus
in the world engendering all kinds of structures

think of ideas as solitons, identities whose structures
have some form of coherence but whose usage is subjective..
ie prone to mutation in the field

how can subjectivity critique subjectivity, when the knowledge of the
objective domain is largely conjecture based in subjective
instrumentalities..

what we have is a kind of constructionist chaosmic agon, as reality itself
is a kind of fecund automatic replication..

its no accident to me, that the butterfly was the greek symbol
for psyche, and that we have "the butterfly effect" as a feature
of chaos theory.

what would the world look like if Constantine had not converted to
Xtianity? What would the world look like if Tesla, or Napolean
had never existed..

If the world is a construction, then politics are irrelevant
except as a symptom of mental disorder. Design, ie Aesthetics
should be the overarching concern. If Love and justice, and sustainability
are to be our paradigm, then those paradigms should be designed into the
structure of societies physically without question, and their
implementation should be a scientific process based in applied
materiality. If our own physical expression impugns those paradigms THEN
what happens? Do we.. kill a whole bunch of people
so the system works right again? You see, no crystallization like this is
really possible..

hence agon, or as machiavelli put it, an infinity of troubles,
you get religion to soothe, and complicate, some activism, on every side,
some critique maybe, whatever that does, and
a catalogue of "random" vectors like the weather, but the problematics of
consciousness within the material domain
are trenchant. Reality is more complicated than human intelligence.

why even bother with the puny cyclops cat of flarf..
Its a much larger issue involving the psychologism of sensation
and the phsyics of immaterialty as represented by ideation-transferance
with image-langue

a haunting by pharmakomechanical ghost logics

the exquisite and terrible automatism of it all..

well that was my pathetic attempt//

i agree, and by the same token, see it as mostly irrellevant about
how google derives its algorhythms in the context of poetics. Marianne

There are several contextualisations, specific criticsims of Thao's
thought here:
http://www.viet-studies.org/TDThao/TDThao_Baribeau.htm
This is first page I hit.

here's a sample:

One problem with the first chapter is Thao's use of terms such as "flashes
of consciousness" and "tendential images projected by internal gesture"
(p. 25). Here Thao's attempt at a materialist analysis stumbles at the
difficulty of translating concrete "experienced" aspects of representation
and meaning into materialist neurophysiological terms. An example is this
passage (p. 20):

"In fact, the projection which constitutes this image starting from the
outlined movements of the animal, is actually produced by the 'tendency'
of these movements..., the psychic image has a tendential reality, so to
speak,...it remains strictly nonmaterial."

Though Thao’s concept of the "tendential image" is elaborated from
Spirkin's theory, he seems to overlook essential notions of Spirkin's
theory based in the neurophysiology of the second signalling system. These
notions are essential to understand fully the material neural basis of
linguistic images and representation.

Since the language of the neurophysiology of higher nervous processes
provides alternative scientific formulations of greater clarity to refer
respectively to "consolidations of incidental association" or to "inner
speech" [5], one may wonder why Thao kept the ambiguous references to
"tendential images" in his text. It must be that the author had some
reservations in using purely neurophysiological terms. I suspect that such
reservations, which are common to many philosophers dealing with the
difficult definition of mental images, have something to do with the fear
of biological reductionism, a fear which might be accentuated in Thao's
case by his phenomenological background. Perhaps the apparent "idealism"
involved to such analyses of the "tendential image", etc., Thao terminates
this chapter by paying his dues to Lenin's materialist analysis of mental
representations [6], and equating it to his own interpretation.

please explain to me how Kripke said anything about the physical
'istoria' and its relation to individual agency..
I can't extract it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Kripke

i think there might be a germ in this work i agree with
upon the subject:

Berofsky, Bernard. Liberation From Self: A Theory of Personal Autonomy.
Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1995.
Rather than abandon autonomy for agency, Bernard Berofsky redefines it:
“[A]utonomous agents are not individuals whose actions and decisions are
self-directed” (1), but rational beings who continually “scrutinize”
others’ values and attitudes internalized since childhood (9). Liberation
>From Self: A Theory of Personal Autonomy, anticipates, perhaps, the next
revolution in “self theory” by, oddly enough, returning to Enlightenment
themes. It is one’s commitment to rationality, says Berofsky, that “is
the best overall means to secure one’s objectives” (9). In fact, though
the self may be absorbed in and by the other there is nevertheless a
“potentiality for a form of delight unfettered by a fear of inauthenticity
and enriched by a flow of activity that is both spontaneous, yet governed
by its own internal logic” (2).

Especially if you use the example of Hitler. Check out the review
of HITLER’S VIENNA: A DICTATOR’S APPRENTICESHIP

http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/personal/reading/hamann-hitler.html

it's widely known about the nordic/mystical aesthetic movements
which formed part of nazi culture, but to say, that Hitler could have been
a "Scheller" or "Koestler" I think undermines the entire field of
psychology, of the force, the psychic morphology, the symptomatics of
individuation.

It denies the principle of LUCK, FATE, CHANCE, the iterative notion of
"quality" or integer itself..

230927034927307 is not 2076457927309573789888 ..

Even Jarod Diamond's work pivots on this arbitrariness..
On Culture being a product of Geography and its dis(contents).
though i find this both reductive and non-reductive..

But that kind of arbitrariness is the dialectical opposite
to the concept of Linguistic arbitrariness, or is it..

http://www.hf.uib.no/i/Nordisk/ansatte/barddal/001.Introduction.final.doc

There is an arbitrariness to the non-arbitrary nature of language itself.
What we "get" from "language speaking the speaker" (ie the motivated sign)
cannot be discerned from the study of language itself.. This much is
true.. The life of life IS "a" life.. as frought with morphology and
accident, turning points etc, as the individual.. macro/micro, the notion
of recapitulation between levels, variorum..

At any rate it seems like this is an mutation of the free will
idea in philosophy?

a dream about our leader's fall:

the executioner has put on
his best red velvet hood
his smart tuxedo
looking good

the axe is shiny
curved in space
to part the head
with loving grace

the leader's chains
clink on the wood
his face is proud
what a weird dude

the redcapped masses
howl and pitch
but the executioner
will make no glitch

no missed attempt
no sidling glance
this human chicken
will not dance

this wretched pilot
was taken down
proletariat promethu
rage unbound

but at the last
the executioner sighs
unbinds the leader
and slaps his thighs

he slaps his head
he slaps his mouth
he slaps his face
he slaps his pout

the leader weeps
and the audience sighs
what the fuck
is up with this guy

now do you see
how all this feels
we don't want this
on our "real"

the leader nods
he understands
the executioner
shakes his hand

you work for us
not for our things
we want to help
not murder kings

the leader sobs
the band strikes up
a doggy prances
a newborn pup

a woman sings
in high clear notes
the nation cheers
and casts new votes

the moral of this tale
leader is this
don't lie to us
or we'll be pissed.

then I awoke
and was frightened still
I am some strange bloke
I need a pill.

Goya, Unflinching, Defied Old Age

2006-02-25 Thread Lanny Quarles
February 24, 2006
Art Review | 'Goya's Last Works'
Goya, Unflinching, Defied Old Age
By MICHAEL KIMMELMAN

IN 1824, Ferdinand VII, lately freed from prison with French help and
returned
to the Spanish throne, was a vengeful despot. The Inquisition was restored,
liberals were rounded up.

When a temporary amnesty was announced, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes,
court painter, friend to too many free thinkers, applied to take the
waters at
Plombières, in France.

He headed for Bordeaux, not even bothering to stop at Plombières, then
went on
to Paris, where he spent the summer. He was stone deaf and didn't speak a
word
of French. If he saw Delacroix and Constable in the great Salon of 1824, he
never mentioned it. Delacroix belonged to another generation. In September,
Goya returned to Bordeaux and settled into the expatriate community.

And there he died, at 82, in 1828, attended by his companion, Locadia, a
distant
relative, with whom he reportedly fought all the time, and by her two
children.
The younger one, Rosario, is sometimes thought to have been Goya's daughter
because he said nice things about her art. Goya didn't say many nice things
about other artists.

There have been many Goya shows lately. He's a man for our day, the great,
unflinching satirist of everything irrational and violent and absurd in life
and politics. "Goya's Last Works," at the Frick, differs from the large,
rather
loveless survey that veteran aficionados may remember that the Metropolitan
Museum did some years ago. That exhibition tried to pigeonhole the artist
as a
symbol of Enlightenment values, draining the guts out of Goya. Look at the
late
work and you'll see, as Robert Hughes once nicely put it, that there's no
less
of the Marquis de Sade in him than there is of Rousseau.

The compact Frick show is sublime. An early French biographer, Laurent
Matheron,
writing about Goya during his twilight in exile, blew off the late work as
"feeble and slack." Matheron must have been blind, or saw pictures now lost.
They're certainly not here. I can't recall too many exhibitions on this scale
more revelatory.

The inspiration for it was one of the Frick's own Goyas, a deceptively fine
portrait of a young woman, from 1824, the sort of painting you might miss if
you weren't looking closely. The curators, Jonathan Brown and Susan Grace
Galassi, decided to spotlight it, and the show naturally grew, but not too
much, to include other late works.

It has sometimes been said that the sitter for the Frick portrait is Rosario,
which isn't too likely since she was 36, and the young woman, flushed,
expectant, childishly calm, doesn't look a day over 26. Prim in white gloves
and a black dress trimmed in lace, she is swiftly painted in dashing, creamy
strokes that pay homage to Goya's hero, Velázquez, at the same time that they
bring to mind Manet. He's the automatic association today, Manet having
passed
on to posterity the look of "modern" painting inherited straight from Goya.

For comparison's sake, the curators borrowed other late portraits. Goya
could be
a perfunctory artist, and two clunky portraits of Spaniards in Paris, Joaquín
María de Ferrer and his wife, seem lifeless: diffident commissions. But then
Goya also painted Don Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo, an architect, shirt sleeves
rolled up, arms folded, smiling slightly, resembling Goya as a young man. The
best portraits have an intimate bond with the sitters.

The strongest bond comes across in the one of his old pal Leandro
Fernández de
Moratín. A poet and playwright, Moratín sat for Goya in the 1790's, when
he was
lean and suave. Now he's puffy and middle aged, his face built up with thick,
puttylike slabs of pigment. He has the tense expression of someone who knows
his portraitist will be brutally honest but who is himself a believer in
truth
and in the artist, and whose forbearance therefore makes him look heroic and
humane. Only the savviest, most mature painter could manage to convey all
that.

But then, more than 30 years earlier, Goya had already sketched a portrait of
himself after a bout with death that cost him his hearing; in it he's
Beethoven
with Medusa's hair, all wary introspection and defiance. That drawing is
in the
show, as a kind of prelude for the self-portrait from 1820, painted after
another illness during which Goya was attended by a friend, a doctor named
Eugenio García Arrieta. In gratitude Goya portrayed them both, as an ex-voto,
inscribed with elaborate thanks. Arrieta supports his ailing patient and
holds
up a glass of medicine. Eyes glazed, head lolling, Goya clutches his
bedsheets
(the gesture speaks volumes) while behind him, as if straight from his
fevered
brain, a noisome coven of figures, like the Fates, lurks in the shadows.

By that point, decades of violence and political calamity along with his own
physical suffering had reinforced in Goya a hermetic, almost hallucinatory
despair — an outlook on the world that, the portraits of his friends aside,
pervaded

Re: about the masks - lanny

2006-03-18 Thread Lanny Quarles
I still have the file,
but maybe I'll post something
new instead. Kara and I
were at a costume shop
where I was trying out
a fantastic bright pink
brocade 18th Century dandy
costume. They wanted
like $250 bucks a day to
rent it. There was also
a rabbit head that had
the look of a grim old
god, instead of peter
cotton tail. Well, we
ended up with two venetian
carnivale masks. pretty
nice, both cloth board
with sort of a low white
fur. One is the standard
human face, the other
is the commedia dell arte
plague doctor mask which
looks sort of like a big
nose or beak. not sure
what to do with them yet,
and I really wanted to do
a kind of little film
using the heavily brocaded
and patterned dandy suit
while wearing the rabbit
head. the idea was this.

I read an article about
viruses being perhaps
part of the fundamental
construction of life
called unintelligent
design. today i was
brainstorming and came
up with the idea of
viruses being a sort
of transcription space
for the early protists,
like a kind of storage system
albeit one which was completely
random and unconscious.
at any rate, then i started
to re:consider endosymbiosis
and did a search for
viral endosymbiosis
which led me to Bell's
theory of Viral Eukaryogenesis
which places virality
at the nucleus of the
cell..

so anyway, and very sorry to
ramble like this, i thought
since part of the rhetoric of the
'intelligent design' theory
was 'man is like finding a
pocket watch in the forest'
that i would connect that
to the Alice in Wonderland
Story, and maybe have a
grim dandy bunny god hiding
pocket watches in the forest

or if that seemed too pro-I.D.
I would have the bunny find
the watch but it would be broken..

or maybe the bunny would rape
alice, kill her.. something brutal
and unintelligent

or stick a pocket watch in her mouth
i dont know what

anyway i hadnt really gotten
out of the brainstorming phase
and was just trying to wrap my
mind around how a film like
that would work, how to make
it able to question both sides
of the argument in less literalistic
terms than "does God exist"

not even really sure i want
to get into any theological
questions, but as religion seems
sort of part of the social dynamic
these days, there may be something
interesting about interrogating
those structures..

i like the idea of a promiscuity,
a protean unconscious (ie a kind of dreaming)
like a witches cauldron or hindu cosmology

and the rabbit represents that
"omnisexual" promiscuity of forms
by "omnisexual" i want to reflect
the polymorphous perverse but in
a way opposite to say a Hegelian
progression, this is a capricious
god, an insane grim dandy god
whose reasoning is monstrous
and enacted through monsters
caprichos.. so instead of 'intelligent design'
and Christo-hegelian-Rationalistic-Linear-Telos
we get a sort of Teratological-ontological-non-linear
primordial caprichos world where as in Goya
"the sleep of reason breeds monsters"
but here, various forms of 'reason' or
in our more utilitarian and clipped modernism
the 'rationale' which sounds like 'organelle' become
equally monstrous to one another, ie
the historical grotesque..

as if somehow the agencylessness of things
could come to be a holiness, a form of the divine

if people could understand
the miracle of that
how OPEN the universe is
to our TOUCH and yet how
unstable, how frail

which rings very zen to me

sorry
i am stewing on this all morning
just want to get something going

i post picture of clean white plague doctor
mask from venice

i have lovely mask from venice
i love mask

thank you Smaragdina Osirimadoanna

this is friggin gorgeous..
i was listening to Gerald Grisey's l'espaces acoustique
this afternoon.. this certainly goes well with that
stuff.. the textures have a very realistic feel
to them and the font selections interfere in delicate
ways with the contours of the forms

the idea which seems implicit is a kind of musico-spatial post-writing
in which content arises from the action of the gaze interpreting,
interacting w/the composition and its various mappings.. the actualisation
of a virtual mimesis using 3d seems so perfectly aligned to the musical
visuality of language the text seems situated within that through it upon
it.. those surfaces literally smoke with semiosis..

i'm wondering if you've played with elefont yet.. you might get some
ideas there as well.. making the fonts actually 3d as well..

abolutely supple..

Dante Had Little Personal Helpers, But Henry the 8th Drinks Fanta

2006-04-06 Thread Lanny Quarles
Curly white poodles with ceramic George Washington helmet-heads
dream themselves into a perfect face-socket,
an interface which works by thermal transduction;
various sections of the face heating to specific temperatures
to eventually control the drawing of a tattoo needle.

Upon the chest of the 'working class'
a hydro encephalic Christ-baby is crucified, but underneath
there's a caption which reads, "This is not a hydro encephalic Christ-baby."

Four-wheelers gather at MUD MOUNTAIN.
Four-wheelers gather at MUD MOUNTAIN.
Four-wheelers gather at MUD MOUNTAIN.
Four-wheelers gather at MUD MOUNTAIN.

It's really too grotesque to depict.

But there's this one guy with an old custom Willy's
with a stock-car motor. They call him Henry the 8th,
because he's always eating a turkey leg. He's always
got a six-pack of orange Fanta because it's even cheaper
than beer. He's got a window on the world, framed in
beef jerky and raw-hide fringe. He's got a Constitution,
because he's a pawless whisker bear afloat in the eyeball
of an eagle. He's just like a gasoline powered goat-head
in the pouch of a weeping Kangaroo, a thorn in Jesus' fore-
head, a coffin full of undead cigarettes, an American Spirit
whose right to be here is codified in law. He’s at Mud Mountain,
but he’s the only one there who voted for Willy Clinton, and he did
that by accident.

IBM FORMAT

Watching Das Boot the other night with some hot-assed American
high-school cheerleaders, I was struck by the way they oooh'd
and awed over the blonde young Hitlerians. Maybe these ladies
don't know it, but there was something intrinsically unfriendly
about Hitler. Maybe it was the way, he let you know, basically,
with the right backing, a man can do just about anything he wants,
for better, or for worse. The main underlying message of Hitler
was just that. And that is why Hitler was always already the
anti-Christ, or Anti-Mohammed even, because even though he lost
the war, he put it in everybody's mind: "Really, when it comes
right down to it, I can do whatever the fuck I want." I mean, when
the forces are right, a person can basically do whatever the fuck
it is they want to do. This really isn't something you want people
to understand, and this is something the Church has been blindly
blathering on about for centuries. Make them scared, because if
they aren't scared, and know they can do whatever the fuck it
is they want to do, look out! You think Jesus had it bad, Bosch’s
Hell will look like fucking Disneyland compared to that shit.

The Legalists in China always said Man is intrinsically evil,
if not, then why I am making so much money being a lawyer.
I mean really, I am making a pretty good living because everybody
thinks they can do whatever the fuck it is they want to do.
Even the Emperor knew, he couldn't do exactly the fuck what it
was he wanted to do, he sort of had to coax the ministers.
The Emperor was a totally stupid evil person, but at least he
had some notion of realism, even if it was a realism based
on an attempt to do whatever the fuck it was he wanted to do.

So what I'm getting at is that America is sort of like the
Matrix. You basically can do what the fuck you want to, no
matter if it's good for yourself, or anybody else, even if you don’t
really fucking know what the fuck it is you are doing, and when
you imagine not being one of these batteries, when you imagine
waking up as a Jamaican carrot farmer whose family was all
killed by bandits 15 years ago, but love your chickens, when
you imagine being a legless Cambodian orphan forced to beg
outside a bikini factory, but then let's face it, there aren't any bikini
factories in Cambodia. I mean really, what could possibly be more
corrupt than a bikini factory. Shouldn't men and women have to make
their own bikinis, and ideally shouldn't we all be able to
grow back any limb we wanted. Everybody knows that the end
result of all human endeavor is to make things exactly like
a cartoon, so everyone, no matter who they are, can do whatever
the fuck it is they want to do, but do it in such a way that
is has no noticeable consequences of any form at all, ever,
which, when viewed from, say, Alpha Centauri, is exactly what
is going on. I mean none of the really elegant aliens are
ever going to see this old drunk pumpkin. You think the little
gray guys are like really advanced aliens. Those guys are
probably the equivalent of an American Meth head, they go
around schlepping up a few obscure compounds from the nearest
star so they can cook up whatever cross-dimensional hallucinogen
or temporal dilation drug they are hopped up on and then they
chill for a few centuries back at the gelatin hive.. I think people
should come to grips with just how utterly ghetto this galaxy
is..

The only hero I ever had was Silver Surfer. That guy had no illusions.
He was fucked and he knew it. He knew the rules, and he knew how
To break the rules. He was on the lamb from having to be evil.

Wordsworth wanders on to the Shanghai metro
By Jonathan Watts in Beijing

Thirty years ago the posters on the Shanghai public transport system
screamed Maoist slogans. For the past 10 years they have been hard-sell
advertisements for cosmetic surgery clinics and cars. But from next month a
more poetic tone will be struck by verses from Blake, Wordsworth, Michael
Bullock and Kathleen Jamie.

In a sign of changing priorities, the Shanghai metro will display poems by
four British poets in a groundbreaking cultural exchange between the world's
two most popular languages and its oldest and newest subway networks.

Under the deal, which took years to thrash out, the London Underground -
which has displayed poems for 20 years - is displaying lines from some of
China's great wordsmiths: Li Bai, Du Pu [Du Fu?] and Po Chu-i.

Next month the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, will launch a similar
programme in Shanghai with Wordsworth's Daffodils, Blake's Auguries of
Innocence, Jamie's The Blue Boat and Bullock's Butterfly.

Foregoing thousands of pounds of advertising revenue, the Shanghai metro
will display extracts from these poems on 500 carriage hoardings for at
least two months.

"It is the first time that the Shanghai metro has used cultural content from
a foreign country. That is why is took several years," said Jeff Streeter,
cultural and education consul of the British Council in Shanghai. "They were
very cautious. They looked at the plan very carefully to make sure it was
suitable."

The Shanghai government employed a literature scholar from Fudan University
to assess whether the exchange was appropriate. In the end the main concern
was not politics, but pessimism.

"The poems on the London Underground are always about death, but we want to
create a more comfortable environment for our passengers," said Song
Liqiang, the chief of the Shanghai metro communist party committee. "That is
why we chose the four poems we did."

Mr Streeter, a poetry enthusiast, said he wanted the mood to be upbeat.

"We want this project to reflect the final stanza of Bullock's poem: 'A
flying flower that changes the colour of my day'."

I studied Contemporary Museum Practices, Pomo-Art theory etc
under a man named Jeff Kelley. He wrote one of the main theory books
on Kaprow that is out there. We had Kaprow come through UTA in the 80's
and do an action. At the time I wasn't very impressed, but after reading
more about him over the years, I think he was a pretty fascinating figure.
Sorry to hear about his passing.

cave

2005-04-15 Thread Lanny Quarles
this most appropriate cave is associated with spasm.
a long cave.
a deep cave.
a cave which has a mechanical door erected.
this cave has its inner surfaces patterned.
this cave is empty, except for a single block of stone with a skull on top.
this is a delicate cave, also one with a few bats.
a cave which is in the shape of a trident.
a cave which eventually digests you.
an artificial cave.
an email cave.
a cave inside another cave.
this cave is full of water. also there is a statue. (diana?)
this cave has no entrance.
in this cave, a bird-headed man sleeps.
in this cave, a man sleeps.
this cave is full of nothing.
