Re: [Xastir] Maps
I upgraded my laptop to Ubuntu 18.04 today, and I encountered the libcurl issue. The solution for me was to remove libcurl4-openssl-dev and install libcurl4-gnutls-dev. Recompiling Xastir after that change left me with an installation with maps working normally. In the map chooser, the Online/OSM_tiled_mapnik.geo selection has been relatively bulletproof over the years. There is also an Online/USTigermap.geo selection that works (and there are other Online map choices that work as well). It's not clear from your message if your are looking to display any map (either online or offline), or if you are looking for how to display an offline map without an internet connection. Also are you using the version of Xastir that is provided by Ubuntu 18.10, or are you using a compiled version downloaded from GitHub? If you are using the one provided by Ubuntu it may not be up to date enough to include the Tiger Map updates. I did ./update-xastir yesterday and received same result and the 260 font error. I deleted .xastir in home holder and src. And git cloned xastir again and maps are back. I have been trying to get a map to appear on my newly installed xastir all afternoon. The new installation was required when Ubuntu 18.04 broke the libcurl3/4 link. Re: [Xastir] Maps
Try installing libwebp-dev, i.e. sudo apt-get install libwebp-dev. Then recompile Xastir. There is a known problem with the graphicsmagick development package in the latest Ubuntu and Debian releases. It does not install libwebp-dev as a dependency. At the end of the output of the configure script there is a list of supported libraries, and without libwebp-dev installed you should have seen a "No" for Imagemagick/graphicsmagick support. Xastir needs that for online map support as well as support for some offline formats. After installing libwebp-dev and running configure again you should see a "yes" on that line The above assumes you already installed the libgraphicsmagick1-dev package. If not, be sure to install that as well. Lee - K5DAT On Nov 3, 2017 10:58 AM, "Joseph LaFerla" <j...@laferla.ca> wrote: Yes I have expand dirs checked. I seem to have everything correct. When I moved from the binary, I did not save any maps. What maps should I have with a clean install from source? And like I said, the maps ARE listed in the Map Chooser and they ARE in/usr/local/share/xastir/maps, it’s just that when I select any one of them a map does not show up. The STDERR output says that geo maps are supported. I did have maps in the binary distribution but I did not save them. And I deleted .xastir and had xastir recreate the directory. Did you click "expand dirs" on map chooser? Maybe the maps you like were moved into a subdirectory (e.g. Online) and they're just not visible. It may be possible there were some maps present in the binary distribution /usr/share/xastir/maps that are no longer present? If you haven't removed the binary xastir yet, take a look at /usr/share/xastir/maps and compare to /usr/local/share/xastir/maps . -Jason kg4wsv ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://xastir.org/mailman/listinfo/xastir

Make sure Auto Maps is turned off. You may be loading multiple map sets and the last one loaded wins. For raster maps you typically want to only load one. You can then load vector maps on top of it. For vector maps you can load multiples because they don't cover each other up. It could be something else entirely that's causing your problem, but check Auto Maps first. Map -> Enable Auto Maps -> OFF Make sure when you're learning Xastir you only check one map at a time in Map Chooser. Hey Jason, There was some great threads on the offline tile server topic earlier this year and while I can do the work, the storage requirements seemed pretty high. My biggest issue is that I'm just not very happy with OSM in terms of having pretty maps. Google Maps say on aprs.fi are far easier to read, etc. but Google's terms don't allow tile caching for offline use, etc. --David KI6ZHD On 07/15/2016 09:42 AM, Jason Godfrey wrote: On the topic of pretty offline maps, I have followed online directions to setup my own local OSM tile server and then created an xastir mapfile to point to localhost. Another: https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger-line.html With a quick reading it looks like the Tigermaps from 2007 to 2015 are all the same format, but please someone correct me if I'm wrong. If that's the case, the 2015 ones should work fine in Xastir: 2008 was the last format we integrated in with dbfawk files. Of course one of the things map providers tend to do is change the signature on the DBF files. If they've done that, then you have to create new dbfawk files to go with them to do the mapping for Xastir. Re: [Xastir] Maps
That's one snag with Xastir now. No easy method for obtaining and converting map files for offline use by inexperienced users. I have some of the old 2009? or 08 cloudmade maps I still use and severalof the old 2006 Tiger maps. They are no longer available for download for the "hacking impaired".They were plug n' go mapsets for offline use. YAAC can use the geofabrik .osm.bz2 files to create an offline mapset. I let the program run overnite to importthe data for the whole of north america. A neophyte can fiddle with the maps from within YAAC without too much trouble. But. I still like Xastir a little bit better as there are more tricks it can do as opposed to YAAC when it comes to tracking. One big one is injecting an incoming NMEA GPS datastream as if it's APRS packet data. Re: [Xastir] Maps
Regarding the NOAA weather alert maps, there's a script that gets installed to /usr/local/share/xastir/scripts called "get-NWSdata" which you can run as root on your box to snag them and install them. It uses "wget" to fetch the files so you must have that installed. We periodically update that script so you probably want to run the latest version of it so it snags the correct files. This is the latest one: http://xastir.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xastir/xastir/scripts/get-NWSdata?revision=1.48=markup=date I can't help on the other maps 'cuz I haven't downloaded or used those. I don't know what xastir used to decide how much map data to cache, but that's the setting I would hunt for. There is no such setting for OSM map tiles. In fact, in browsing the code the only place I see that would remove OSM tiles from the OSMtiles directory does so when the tile is bad. I'm going to have to fire up Xastir on my laptop (which runs Ubuntu) and see if I can reproduce Skyler's issue. I only use Xastir on that laptop for search and rescue, when I never have internet -- and so I never use online maps there (I use shapefiles and topo maps in that activity). It will be a day or so before I can try that. Another idea would be to generate data in advance. I just poked around in mailing list from late 2012 and saw some talk about using Mbtiles data with xastir. Mbtiles is a format for mass offline storage of raster tiles. It's supported by GDAL, and I think that means it works in xastir? You could use a program like Tilemill to generate full Mbtiles coverage for the areas you need. Side benefit (if it works): you can distribute the same Mbtiles file to all of your volunteers, minimizing training load. Xastir does *NOT* actually support gdal raster formats, which is why we are quick to point out that most uses won't want to bother with GDAL. There was brief bit of development effort in that direction about 10 years ago, but it resulted only in the support of OGR vector layers, not GDAL raster layers. But the OGR code is akin to the older shapefile code without dbfawk --- meaning that Xastir will only render certain types of ogr data layer nicely, and all others will just render as ugly black lines. -- Tom RussoKM5VY SAR502 DM64ux http://www.swcp.com/~russo/ Tijeras, NM QRPL#1592 K2#398 SOC#236http://kevan.org/brain.cgi?DDTNM echo prpv_a'rfg_cnf_har_cvcr | sed -e 's/_/ /g' | tr [a-m][n-z] [n-z][a-m] ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://xastir.org/mailman/listinfo/xastir

[Xastir] Maps won't cache
I have xastir running on Ubuntu. I installed it there to get sound modem working. I have open street maps on there and want to use them offline. However, when I move from a zone that isn't cached to a zone that is, all of the cached maps are deleted. This did not happen on Mac, just Ubuntu. Is there an option that I have set wrong or is there a bug in xastir? What good maps with roads, lakes and more does anyone recommend that I can download offline? If the open street maps offline is not going to work, I guess I have to find something else. Re: [Xastir] Xastir Maps
http://www.xastir.org/wiki/HowTo:Ubuntu_12.04-binary There is a newer version built for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS that you can try. I know it worked with online maps when I used it in 2012. After downloading I believe right clicking on the deb file will give you an option to install it. Given Mint 13 is based on Ubuntu 12.04, it should be compatible. FYI there is no need to install dependent packages like imagemagick when installing binary versions of Xastir - those are installed when Xastir is installed. I was trying to determine if the version from the repo was built with imagemagick or graphicsmagick support. Tom, I went to the xastir wiki and got directions for building from a tarball. I searched for the latest stable release, and found version 2.0.4. I executed the instructions from the wiki by copying and pasting the terminal commands from the wiki to my terminal. FAIL The instructions are classic linux instructions, worthless frustrating and a waste of time and effort. The mint package installed version, (2.0.0), works flawlessly as soon as the user figures out that the information on the wiki about putting map files in ~/xastir/map_cache is totally bogus. By placing my maps in usr/share/xastir/maps they become available in the map chooser drop down and can be used just fine so long as they are of a limited set of vector graphics. It remains to be seen whether raster graphics will work because they require no only the raster graphics, (.png, .gif, .tif, .jpg…) files, but an accompanying text file with reference information so that the xastir app or its sub components can parse the placement of objects on the graphic background. I am having considerable difficulty finding raster files that come with the associated text file and have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to create them my self. It helps to understand that Xastir's install needs to figure out the capabilities that are installed on the OS and morph accordingly into something that takes advantage of whatever is there. The usual install on a fresh Linux box is to iterate through the ./configure stage again and again, installing packages that Xastir can take advantage of, until the summary screen at the end is satisfactory. It helps for people to write down the names of packages for their particular OS or flavor of OS while they're doing it, then put it up on the Wiki for the next sucker, I mean user, to try the install. So the instructions get faster and more tuned for each flavor as people update the Wiki. We've spent a great amount of time getting the install to be flexible enough to handle the thousands of differences among the various OS'es. It's not an easy problem. Then: You're comparing the source install to a package install. Two different animals. The Xastir project doesn't do ANY packages, as there would be far too many for us to keep up with and we'd never get to work on source code. It's up to individual users that have an interest in a particular OS to do the packaging and releases of same. Yes synaptic is a front end for apt but it's much easier to use, especially when one is looking for files with changed names. Synaptic allows searching on partial names and one can scroll though a list, looking for likely candidates and reading the notes for particular files to see if there's a possible match. For me the synaptic gui compensates for my age induced inability to remember what I've read in command line. I reserve my use of apt-get for when I know exactly what I need. I mostly use OSM maps these days. Much quicker, very much up-to-date. Entirely different caching code used in Xastir. I don't know why it would be caching maps but not retrieving them. You do have to match the same zoom level and map center if you expect to get a cache hit. If you're constantly zooming/panning, you're not going to get many cache hits unless you use the OSM tiles. If you use OSM, remember the F4 key as it will force you to zoom levels that look best with those maps. Immediately after I zoom in or out I hit F4 if I'm using OSM maps. 2.) I'm running OpenSuSE-12.1 64-bit, fresh install here, but it looks like I might want to remove some 4.5 packages so they don't conflict with the 4.8 packages, if I can (sometimes other packages depend on them and I can't remove the library, but I should be able to remove the 4.5 -devel package). It's when you cross version numbers between the -devel and the library that you most often run into issues. If I remember correctly, if you only have one -devel package installed for libdb and it matches the most recent libdb package, you're probably ok. 3.) I downloaded the shape files but the weather map will not show up on the openstreetmap? How did you download the shapefiles? Using the script as root? What version of Xastir are you running, and did you install it from sources or from a pre-compiled package? We just tweaked the script a couple of weeks ago to download the latest weather Shapefiles, but that version is only in CVS. You'd probably need the latest dbfawk files from CVS to match as well. -- Curt, WE7U.http://www.eskimo.com/~archer Lotto: A tax on people who are bad at math. - unknown Windows: Microsoft's tax on computer illiterates. - WE7U. ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir

Everytime it down loads I get these on the screen. DB -get: method not permitted before handle's open method and DB -put: method not permitted before handle's open method 3.) Now that life has settled a bit. tim@box2:~$ ls -al ~/.xastir/OSMtiles ls: cannot access /home/tim/.xastir/OSMtiles: No such file or directory Still no maps here, but all else is working great to the best of my knowledge. I tried doing a locate on OSMtiles No success. It's been kind of an experiment for a headless IGate among other things. One of the things I did while playing around was install APRSIS32 under wine. Even while being at a disadvantage under wine, the OSM map performance is outstanding - zooms, moves, etc happen significantly faster than what I see with Xastir - it's really not close. So it seems there's room for improvement on the OSM map front, although the addition of the OSM support in general is still a fantastic thing. [Xastir] maps: how many are too many?
I've been playing around with some OSM tile mapping in other applications (tangogps, etc). I know xastir has some OSM tile support, but it's meant for online operation. So, I started playing around. I'm using an ubuntu VM on my macbook pro. 2.66GHz i7, 4Gb RAM, 1 processor allocated to VM. The OSM tile coordinate system is fairly straightforward. A little hacking resulted in a script that will download maps for a given rectangle and zoom level, so I can preload a map cache (for tangogps). Grab files for areas where I live, work, and play. Surprisingly, this only results in about 1.8Gb of data. Yet more hacking results in a script to generate .geo files for everything in the tangogps/OSM map cache. Now then, let's feed 'em to xastir. In case you're curious, it takes about 3 or 4 hours to index 250,000 new maps. Operations that involve managing maps - changes in maps selected for display, zooming, or just opening the map chooser with expand dirs on - can be quite slow. Like come back in 10 minutes slow. Once you get the map view you want, things are surprisingly back to normal. panning around redraws in normal time, even though at the moment I have 100,000+ tiles to chose from, plus a set of TIGER shapefiles to render on top of that. zooming is fine, too, unless I zoom far enough to change the mapset. Conclusion: using xastir pre-rendered map tiles for detailed data for a large area is not practical at this point. If you change OSM zoom levels, the penalty is just too high. Next step, see if I can shoehorn a map rendering engine, web server, and caching proxy server onto my xastir box and see if that is feasible. Or maybe I should just tweak/create some dbfawks so the shapefile lines and labels are fat enough for me to see 'em while driving. -Jason kg4wsv ___ Xastir mailing list Xastir@lists.xastir.org http://lists.xastir.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/xastir
