[57north-discuss] Secure Tuesday
Hello All, On Sunday morning I interrupted a burglar in the act of robbing the space. There are some new actions that members will need to do when leaving the space. Come in tonight and we will tell you about them. There is also now some hazardous equipment in the space follow rule three in both cases. “If you don’t know ask” Back to our regularly scheduled programming… ITS TUESDAY Every Tuesday is 57 North’s open night, any one is welcome to come a long and see the space. Not a lot of ‘real’ work can be done on a Tuesday because other people are just too damned interesting. Any members coming and planning to work on projects should reply to this(the discuss list email). Tonight I will be trying to get a PS/2 keyboard speaking to an arduino. I might play with camera control too, if given enough beer I will recall the sage of “The Viking Raid”. Things Happening in the space: Thursday the 13th March 2014: Lock Sport Night: Come and learn how to take control of your locks, we will provide instructions, demonstrations and training so you can learn secure locks really are. Free for members, £5 for non members. Saturday the 15th March 2014: MakeIt-Glo: Come to our introductory electronics workshop, you will use an arduino like board and build an awesome RGB lamp. https://ti.to/57northhacklab/makeit-glo £12 Tom @adventureloop adventurist.me ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

Re: [57north-discuss] IMPORTANT: Things In The Space
That sounds worryingly present tense and vague... I stopped Iain throwing anything away, there are some full bin bags though. Rob - Lots of monitors seem to be in the space. Are these yours? Do you still want to play with the broken one? How many is lots? There are two monitors on the central desk. Another is taking up shelf space. I think monitors are useful and I'd like there to be lots in the space. If they're annoying people being on benches Right now we are having work bench problems. This we can share with the internet community at large. ## Being welcoming We need to be more welcoming of other people to get more members. There has been too much stuff on the mailing list where folks are expecting too much technical ability or getting annoyed with people because of overly specific expectations of what a hackspace member should be. We need more members so everyone needs to try harder to be friendly. I do not expect people to have technical ability magically, but I expect them to want to acquire it, not just go it's a hackerspace as an excuse for shoddy work. We should be nice to anyone no matter what. Though personally I have a very short fuze for people that don't want to learn. I hate having to learn when I want to do, so I can see where people are coming from. I lead a troubled life. ## Decision making There was some discussion about how we should be making decisions. There was no real consensus on how this should be happening for day to day decisions. Some points that were hit: So no decision was made on how we should make decisions? * Anything involving spending money should go to the directors It should probably go to everyone, as a discussion on the mailing list? Two directors need to sign off on it legally, but members should also be involved. It should go to everyone, but that won't work. In the end all money related decisions go through me until we have a bank account. I will ask anyone that will listen because I **don'** want to be hated. * Directors need a majority of them to agree to have agreement What? Please clarify. I thought it was two(2). ## AGM According to our articles of association we were supposed to have an AGM in April so this will be an AGM (if the directors agree and we manage to get out an announcement on time...). This is here https://github.com/hackerdeen/articles/commit/58dc945981e15cb751968b22290e9b7f6c4ad68c#diff-8f70be4e1e768e1b1d4787a2b3ea94d5R266 I remember when the proto(We weren't a company then) directors walked through the articles we said this would be set to our first aniversary. Can some others back this up, I don't think having the AGM in May makes any sense at all. -- Tom @adventureloop adventurist.me The most secure code in the world is code which is never written; The least secure code is code which is written in order to comply with a requirement on page 70 of a 100-page standard, but never gets tested because nobody enables that option. - Colin Percival ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

Hack N Make is this Sundae. Set up for HnM starts tomorrow at 1700. Right now we don't have anything that advertises the space. If some one could make a few banners tomorrow that would be awesome. HnM runs on Sunday from 0900-1600, Elphinstone Hall, King's College, The University of Aberdeen. We will be allowed in from 0800 to straighten up our booth. We have to be out of Elphinstone before 1700, there is another event running. Unfortunately most of the people that have told me they are coming along to help are going to are also coming to Edinburgh tomorrow to help protect your freedom. That means the usual suspects won't be able to help with prep until Saturday evening. There are a few simple things that could be made that will make our booth not look like shit. * 57 North Banners * Flyers of some sort * Signage stuff Probably lots of other things too. I did some playing with a couple of the LEDs last night. These are eBay rated 10W LEDs that actually max out at about 3W, but at that power they're a bit unstable and some of the array switches on and off annoyingly. Running them at about 1.5W they look to be prefectly stable so I'm now targeting that. Looking at the amount of light they kick out running in that set up I still think they're useful. One advantage of being much lower power than originally claimed is that there is no need to worry about the heat: I left one on for more than an hour yesterday with only the flat thin metal permanent heatsink and it only got to 30°C (I did some playing with wrapping it in paper to see if reducing airflow possibilities would make a difference - it didn't). That sounds good, how are you planning on mounting them? Do you think they could be mounted in the corner of a ceiling tile? The metal frame that the tiles sit in could act as a further heat sink. Because this was looking like a project that wouldn't involve any coding I have tagged on some plans to make a stupidly complex control system. The plan now has a switch and relay for each LED so that they can be switched by either, wire the relays to an arduino along with some sensing of what position the toggle switches are in and then make a web page on doorbot that can control the lights. We could also put some intelligence in there to have automatic lights... While you are devising this you could incorporate the EL wire I put in the door yesterday? The current set up isn't ideal, it wont be long before someone leaves it on and we come back to a dead sign. [57north-discuss] Duncan Campbell's Secret Society
Hello Hackers, I came across a tv series from the late 80's about Secret Societies via metafilter[1]. All but two of these episodes were aired at the time, but the lizard people at the time stopped the final two from being shown. Thanks to the magic of the internet we can now get the episodes from the internet archive (excepting the last two). I have captured both the ogg and mp4 links for the 4 available videos. mp4 first with each episode description. From the site: In 1987, Duncan produced a six-part documentary for the BBC entitled, Secret Society. The series disclosed the culture of secrecy in government and lack of public accountability for its actions. The Thatcher administration had different ideas. Before the show was broadcast Strathclyde police raided the BBC's Scottish headquarters and Duncan's home, seizing the tapes. Although these were later returned, two episodes, 'Secret Cabinet Committees' and 'Zircon' were banned from broadcast in an act of good, old fashioned red-pen censorship. We want to know about interesting things that have happened in the space, events we have run and progress on your projects. The deadline for articles is the 10th of December 2014. Articles should be sent to myself (jo...@sdf.org) in a plain text format, ASCII art is encouraged. -- Tom @adventureloop adventurist.me :wq #pragma summon hackers ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

I think we should aim to meet at 1800 on Thursday the 9th of April 2015 where Duthie Park meets the start of the old railway line trail[1]. The journey will probably be around an hour, I plan to play with a portable vhf radio(bicycle mobile) and some gps wardriving. Hello Hackers, I am losing sleep over a bug in a circuit, so I will be in the space tonight trying to debug something. I will probably be in from about 1900. Hello Hackers, It is Tuesday, again. Some of us are heading to the space and opening up the place to anyone that wants to come a long. Perfect time to see what we get up to. If you are coming down fire off a reply to this email. If you are doing something cool you can let us know, I am sure there are people on this list eager to hear about the cool things we do. - tj ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

This picks on G+ and not twitter or facebook because in EFFs 2013 Who has your back?scorecard thing[1] google+ didn't get a full set of stars. But this is out of date. All three got a full set of stars in the 2014 report[2], and then EFF changed what the stars are for this year and none of the three get a full set anymore[3]. I don't like the scary popup, and think the EFF scorecards over simplify a complex issue (though they can be useful for starting a discussion, I can't see a good way to have that discussion with people following links on our site). I'd like to remove the popup from the G+ link but thought I'd best ask before just doing it... If you were scared then the popups did their job. I think we should just remove the facebook and g+ links, we don't manage those accounts at all. - [tj] ___ 57north-discuss mailing list 57north-discuss@lists.57north.co http://lists.57north.co/listinfo/57north-discuss

Tomorrow being the third Wednesday of the month also means that it is TechMeetUp. In fact it is the last TechMeetUp of the year! Tomorrow we are running lightning talks, lightning talks are not given by lightning(that would be thunder), but are 5 minute opportunites where any one can jump up and ramble for 5 minutes. Only 5 minutes mind you, there will be boos if you go over. Tonight, I will be creating slides for my talk tomorrow(is a sekret) and when that is boring I will be trying to get a pi to speak to one of those cctv monitors.
