[57north-discuss] Secure Tuesday

2014-03-11 Thread Tom jones
Hello All,

On Sunday morning I interrupted a burglar in the act of robbing the space.
There are some new actions
that members will need to do when leaving the space. Come in tonight and we
will tell you about them. There is also now some hazardous equipment in the
space follow rule three in both cases.
“If you don’t know ask”

Back to our regularly scheduled programming…

ITS TUESDAY

Every Tuesday is 57 North’s open night, any one is welcome to come a long and
see the space. Not a lot of ‘real’ work can be done on a Tuesday because other
people are just too damned interesting.

Any members coming and planning to work on projects should reply to this(the
discuss list email).

Tonight I will be trying to get a PS/2 keyboard speaking to an arduino. I might
play with camera control too, if given enough beer I will recall the sage of
“The Viking Raid”.

Things Happening in the space:

Thursday the 13th March 2014:
Lock Sport Night: Come and learn how to take control of your
locks, we will provide instructions,
demonstrations and training so you can
learn secure locks really are.
Free for members, £5 for non members.

Saturday the 15th March 2014:
MakeIt-Glo: Come to our introductory electronics workshop, you will
use an arduino like board and build an
awesome RGB lamp.

Re: [57north-discuss] IMPORTANT: Things In The Space

2014-04-05 Thread Tom jones
That sounds worryingly present tense and vague...

I stopped Iain throwing anything away, there are some full bin bags though.

Rob - Lots of monitors seem to be in the space. Are these yours? Do
you
still want to play with the broken one?

 How many is lots?

There are two monitors on the central desk. Another is taking up shelf space.

I think monitors are useful and I'd like there to be lots in the
space.
If they're annoying people being on benches

Right now we are having work bench problems. We need to figure out how to keep
the space usable.

Why were these vital pictures not linked in the minutes?

Cat pictures are important, but I feel a specialised site should be created to
house them. This we can share with the internet community at large.

  ## Being welcoming

We need to be more welcoming of other people to get more members.
There has been too much stuff on the mailing list where folks are
expecting too much technical ability or getting annoyed with people
because of overly specific expectations of what a hackspace member
should be. We need more members so everyone needs to try harder to be
  friendly.

I do not expect people to have technical ability magically, but I expect
them to want to acquire it, not just go it's a hackerspace as an excuse
 for shoddy work.

We should be nice to anyone no matter what. Though personally I have a very
short fuze for people that don't want to learn. I hate having to learn when I
want to do, so I can see where people are coming from. I lead a troubled life.

  ## Decision making

There was some discussion about how we should be making decisions.

There was no real consensus on how this should be happening for day to
day decisions. Some points that were hit:

So no decision was made on how we should make decisions?

   * Anything involving spending money should go to the directors

It should probably go to everyone, as a discussion on the mailing list? Two
directors need to sign off on it legally, but members should also be
 involved.

It should go to everyone, but that won't work. In the end all money related
decisions go through me until we have a bank account. I will ask anyone that
will listen because I **don'** want to be hated.

   * Directors need a majority of them to agree to have agreement

 What? Please clarify.

I thought it was two(2).

 ## AGM

According to our articles of association we were supposed to have an
AGM in April so this will be an AGM (if the directors agree and we
manage to get out an announcement on time...).

This is here
https://github.com/hackerdeen/articles/commit/58dc945981e15cb751968b22290e9b7f6c4ad68c#diff-8f70be4e1e768e1b1d4787a2b3ea94d5R266

I remember when the proto(We weren't a company then) directors walked through
the articles we said this would be set to our first aniversary.

Can some others back this up, I don't think having the AGM in May makes any
sense at all.

what's the distinction between the two at that point?

Tuesday nights are an Open Night, the point is to open up the space for people

The £20 should go along with the application form as per the articles.

[57north-discuss] Hack N Make

2014-05-09 Thread Tom Jones
Hack N Make is this Sundae.

Set up for HnM starts tomorrow at 1700. Right now we don't have anything
that advertises the space. If some one could make a few banners tomorrow that
would be awesome.

HnM runs on Sunday from 0900-1600, Elphinstone Hall, King's College, The
University of Aberdeen. We will be allowed in from 0800 to straighten up our
booth. We have to be out of Elphinstone before 1700, there is another event
running.

Unfortunately most of the people that have told me they are coming along to
help are going to are also coming to Edinburgh tomorrow to help protect your
freedom.

That means the usual suspects won't be able to help with prep until Saturday
evening. There are a few simple things that could be made that will make our
booth not look like shit.

* 57 North Banners
* Flyers of some sort
* Signage stuff

Probably lots of other things too.

I am taking a teletype that is in my office and will be trying to make it work
on Sunday.

All times are in BST(UTC+1). Dates are in the Gregorian calendar. Unless
otherwise
specified locations discussed are in Scotland, Earth, The Milky way Galaxy,
Universe 4.

Cool a few points,

If you don't want to include location and year of birth just leave it off.
The date format at the start of the line is mm/dd.
There should be a tab between the date and the text.
You need a closing angle bracket at the end of your email.

You can test that you added this correctly by running
 $ calendar -t 08.12 -f calendar.57northmembers

That should tell you your birthday is coming up.

UoA is the best place, easier to get a vehicle to and free power.

There is the [v-usb][1] stack that can simulate a lot of USB. It runs on an
ATTINY

(Human Interface Device).

I'm looking for something which has at least 13 digital input pins, which
might rule out some of the very low-end chips.

The v-usb gives the impression that it will run of most avr's, so you should
have a good amount of choice.

Our Cacti reduced it's poll time from over 300s to 20s when we changed from

From this I am guessing that Cacti is the problem component.

There has been discussion on the Observium mailing list about this which
ended up in a hissy fit and one of the devs telling someone to fuck off
so I doubt there is going to be much progress on that front, so I thought I
would see if there was any willing volunteers to take this on as I have
neither the skill, patience or time at the moment to take this on!

Maybe it is worth asking the Cacti( or Spine) devs on how best to scale Spine
to handle your network.

So basically I'd like the poller.php re-written in C, (or just something
better) or if anyone wants to look at the php to see if they can speed it
up I can pass the files along!

This might be not be possible. The [Spine Info][1] page lays out that it has
been built for high speed polling. Anyone coming to this problem would probably
need a really good picture of the sticking point in doing this.

A few questions:

1. How many hosts?
2. What is the target duration?
3. Have you found any technical papers/articles hitting that goal?

[57north-discuss] [Request] Stencils of coat of arms and logo

It appears that at least 3 members of the space will be going to [EMF Camp][1]
at the end of August. As I understand other hackerspace will have tents in the
hackerspace village. While I think we should be part of this I don't think any
of us have the time to set something cool for that up.

Instead I thought it would be cool to fly some flags representing the space. I
would like to make simple two sided flags of our [Coat of Arms][2] and our

To make these we would need some stencils made up. I am hope less at making

Does anyone in the space think they could make these in the next two weeks or
so?

On top of yourself I know me and Iain are going. Hibby is talking about coming.

I still don't have travel sorted, thats mostly because the university is in
farce mode.

Right now my travel plans are:

1) Get a uni hire
2) Jump on Hibby's insurance and share the driving
3) Take the adventuremobile and hope that if it does break down it is on
the
way home

I could possibly steal the crew cab pickup from my Mum that would give 4
people (or 5 if the ones in the back don't want much space) and a decent
amount of space in the back for stuff. Would be easier to convince her
to part with it if we could swap it for an alternative vehicle.

Alternatively taking the train is actually looking quite tempting (not
having to worry about traffic can leave at the back of 8 and expect to
be in Bletchley in ~8 hours, can get up and walk about, less chance of
getting lost...). If I do go that way anyone driving down that would
fancy taking a tent (and maybe some other stuff) with them :)

I don't think I could manage the train with the amount of equipment I have to
take. Also I already have a parking ticket and feel the need to use it.

Once we get to EMF I have two and a half plans.

1) Stream video of talks
2) Make club mate(adventuremate) and give it away
2.5)Acquire a folding bike, hack it in some way with LED's and wifi.

I still need to find a folding bike, though I can't say I have been trying very
hard.

I did some playing with a couple of the LEDs last night. These are eBay
rated 10W LEDs that actually max out at about 3W, but at that power
they're a bit unstable and some of the array switches on and off
annoyingly. Running them at about 1.5W they look to be prefectly stable
 so I'm now targeting that.

Looking at the amount of light they kick out running in that set up I
still think they're useful. One advantage of being much lower power
than originally claimed is that there is no need to worry about the
heat: I left one on for more than an hour yesterday with only the flat
thin metal permanent heatsink and it only got to 30°C (I did some
playing with wrapping it in paper to see if reducing airflow
possibilities would make a difference - it didn't).

That sounds good, how are you planning on mounting them? Do you think they
could be mounted in the corner of a ceiling tile? The metal frame that the
tiles sit in could act as a further heat sink.

Because this was looking like a project that wouldn't involve any coding
I have tagged on some plans to make a stupidly complex control system.
The plan now has a switch and relay for each LED so that they can be
switched by either, wire the relays to an arduino along with some
sensing of what position the toggle switches are in and then make a web
page on doorbot that can control the lights. We could also put some
intelligence in there to have automatic lights...

While you are devising this you could incorporate the EL wire I put in the door
yesterday? The current set up isn't ideal, it wont be long before someone
leaves it on and we come back to a dead sign.

[57north-discuss] Duncan Campbell's Secret Society

2014-10-15 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

I came across a tv series from the late 80's about Secret Societies via
metafilter[1]. All but two of these episodes were aired at the time, but the
lizard people at the time stopped the final two from being shown. Thanks to the
magic of the internet we can now get the episodes from the internet archive
(excepting the last two).

I have captured both the ogg and mp4 links for the 4 available videos. mp4
first with each episode description.

From the site:

In 1987, Duncan produced a six-part documentary for the BBC entitled, Secret
Society. The series disclosed the culture of secrecy in government and lack of
public accountability for its actions. The Thatcher administration had
different ideas. Before the show was broadcast Strathclyde police raided the
BBC's Scottish headquarters and Duncan's home, seizing the tapes. Although
these were later returned, two episodes, 'Secret Cabinet Committees' and
'Zircon' were banned from broadcast in an act of good, old fashioned red-pen
censorship.

Episode 1: The Secret Constitution: Secret Cabinet Committees

The opening episode exposes a rampant culture of secrecy dominant in
Westminster. These clandestine committees and groups yield untold influence on
government policy and yet operate completely independent of public scrutiny or
accountability.

Episode 2: In time of crisis

Since 1982, governments in every other NATO country have been preparing for the
eventuality of war. In Britain, these preparations are kept secret. So what
will happen when the balloon goes up?

Episode 3: A gap in our defences

Bungling defence manufacturers and incompetent military planners have botched
every new radar system that Britain has installed since World War Two. Why? And
can we stop it happening again?

Episode 4: We're all data now

The Data Protection Act is supposed to protect us from abuse, but it's already
out of date and full of loopholes. So what kind of abuses should we worry
about?

Episode 5: ACPO

ACPO have been making up their own law and policy. This episode investigates
the Association of Chief Police Officers and how Government policy and actions
are determined in the fields of law and order

satellite programme kept secret from Parliament

I've removed myself from the ctte-private list, and have no interest in

Remember that our landlord does not own that door, and Ed will be able to

We know that this will be a challenge going in, the strip club have added a
note asking users of the building to not lock the door before 2100 on certain

** Call for makers

Calling all makers, tinkerers, tailors, geeks! The Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire
returns on Sunday 19 April 2015 and it's going to be bigger and better than
ever. We’re looking for people who love making things to come along to our
annual celebration of creativity at Summerhall to show off their work, meet
other makers and enjoy the buzz of the biggest show and tell on earth.

Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire highlights the diversity of human creativity by
bringing makers from all sorts of unexpected areas together under one big roof.
There will be gadgets, hardware, software, knitwear and food. We’d like to see
puppets, 3D printing, taxidermy, zines, inventions, science experiments and
even virtual Minecraft worlds. Whatever you make we’re interested.

If you’re a maker yourself this is the perfect opportunity to share your work
with a huge variety of people, generate new ideas and make new connections. If
you know someone who makes things please suggest that they apply – we are

 Hi, Iain.

I think it might actually be useful to have a webcam available, for
experimenting with, but not being used as a 24h surveillance camera!

It seems a bit drastic to remove it from the Space. Could we not just
use it more appropriately as and when required?

For example, streaming Space talks live for people who are not there?

I don't have a problem with having a camera in the space for talks and specific
usage. In fact Hibby has a high quality camera that is going to be used just
for that.

I have a problem with a camera streaming members while they are in the space no

Cool this sounds like a useful solution to two of our problems. We get rid of
the unmaintained site and we won't need a wildcard ssl. There isn't anything
else in our infrastructure that needs to be user facing. The quotesdb is
probably a bad idea.

Would someone like to volunteer to waste money on a scam cert for the three

I would probably use MediaWiki Bootstrapskin (

I would prefer it to look like a static text file, I imagine I am in the

[57north-discuss] Thursday Night Cycle

2015-04-08 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

There was some talk yesterday about going on a Thursday Night cycle this week.
It was suggested that we cycle a long the Old Dee Side Railway[0]. I propose
that we set off from Duthie Park and cycle to approximately Cults and back.

I think we should aim to meet at 1800 on Thursday the 9th of April 2015 where
Duthie Park meets the start of the old railway line trail[1]. The journey will
probably be around an hour, I plan to play with a portable vhf radio(bicycle
mobile) and some gps wardriving.

This is of course weather depending, we will probably cancel if it gets
terribly Scottish.

If you are interested in coming a long, could you please reply to this email.
This way we can gauge if everyone has arrived.

Wooo!

Wait, what do I put here?

Tomorrow being the third Wednesday of the month also means that it is
TechMeetUp. In fact it is the last TechMeetUp of the year!

Tomorrow we are running lightning talks, lightning talks are not given
by lightning(that would be thunder), but are 5 minute opportunites where
any one can jump up and ramble for 5 minutes. Only 5 minutes mind you,
there will be boos if you go over.

Tonight, I will be creating slides for my talk tomorrow(is a sekret)
and when that is boring I will be trying to get a pi to speak to one of
those cctv monitors.

Does anyone know if we have composite cables in the space?

I will be in.

I will be using the space desktop to try and use openscad, that
probably means wrestling with Ed for access.

I will also be asking Ed about further plot holes in Leviathan Wakes that
came to me in a dream.

It appears that we have finally started a technical book club, if anyone
is interested bug me tonight and I will get around to posting on the
bbs.
