Re: [all-audio] Ascertaining Pitch/Frequency of Different Sounds

2022-09-27 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

I am aware the accepted (concert) pitch of 523.23Hertz is fifth octave c,
some say fifth octave c is 517Hertz, I am also aware fourth octave a is
440Hertz, I guess you can find out other pitches / frequencies off the net
but don't know how or where.

Hi. I hope everyone is well.

I'm working on music projects at the moment and I need to ascertain
the pitch of notes, either by being notified of that directly or by
being able to obtain information regarding a note's frequency so that
I can convert it using my reference guide. The music is in a file on
my laptop, so I was wondering whether or not I can use GoldWave to
find out this information using Jaws. If not, I'm wondering whether or
not there is any accessible DAW (Reaper, Audacity, etc) that will do
this, or any website where sounds can be uploaded and an automatic
answer regarding the pitch/tone given in return.

By the way, I'm aware of the iPhone app Talking Tuner, but I'm not
confident that it's giving me accurate results (I'm unsure whether
VoiceOver's speech is influencing the results, and I'm also finding
that the phone doesn't always pick up sounds played off of my computer
or through my speakers).

Thanks very much in advance for any advice... I'm looking forward to
hearing from you.

Take care, Danny

Greetings,

No it didn't, maybe I worked wrongly.

I created and populated a .wav file, I then did ctrl+s to save the file, I
did not name it, I then went to the attributes button and pressed it. I
then went to the all chanels, then the all rates and down to a rate, then
the all bit rates and down to a bit rate, then
was not sure what to do, went to the presets and down to the standard
quality, then did alt+b, nothing.

So what is alt+b and when and how do I use it?

[all-audio] GoldWave 6.60 presets.

2022-03-30 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

Can anybody advise me, in GW V6.60, how I can look at the preset to find out
exactly what settings have been employed with a view to edit them?

I really want to look at them, change and save the settings back under a new
name, I don't want to lose the settings already created.

In Total Recorder, to set up a new background recording, one can "clone" an
existing setting, the original is not lost. Is there the same kind of
facility in GW V6.60? How do I access such?

Thanks.

OK, this is how I would do it but at present still using V5.70.

1. Start playing file.

2. Do Ctrl with g and enter the new cursor position, press enter, you are
now at the position entered so pause file and press left bracket placing
start marker at cursor position, if you want to start at the beginning, your
start marker is already at 0.00, when you start playing the file, so do the
cursor thing for the finish marker which is right bracket.

3. Make sure you have in the play tab the 0.00 edit field set to in my case
0.15, which means whenever I move the cursor or marker, I hear 15 hundredths
of any sound, so now you have your cursor at the end of the sound, adjust
the marker bacvk/forward to ensure you encompas the whole required deletion,
play the end to ensure.

4. Press delete key, job done.

If you need delete partway through a file, use the above to set start and
end markers, adjusting markers using a very small zoom setting I have mine
set to one second, also have play2 set to play selection and play3 set to
play view, in my case mostly one second,

Re: [all-audio] wavepad question?

2020-12-26 Thread Colin Howard
Simon,

As you've been using WavePad to my knowledge at least a couple of years, I
am really surprised you don't know such a basic function.

I suspect if it is anything like GoldWave, there is a function something
like place marker, in GoldWave, the key stroke to place a marker is left
bracket which when pressed places a start marker at the current cursor
position. the end marker is close bracket which places a marker for the end
of selection at the current cursor
position. In totalRecorder, there is a similar facility so I suspect if you
read the help or manual, you should find the appropriate descriptions.
Removing / inserting into or from files is one of the most basic and early
things I needed to do with GoldWave.

Re: [all-audio] Problem with Existing GoldWave Licence

2020-12-23 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

The last address I have for contacting GoldWave's author is:

chris2...@goldwave.com

Sorry, can't help with the licence issue but suggest try pasting in the user
name and key from your file, this is what I do if the system asks for my key
Etc., to date, since 2010, this has always worked for me.

Hi. I hope everyone is doing well.

I've recently installed the latest version of GoldWave and have been
using it without issue (apart from the fact that the time announced
when a start or end place marker is created is that of the previous
marker and not the one being created at the time). However, I'd
incorrectly assumed that it had remembered my previous licence
credentials, and so this morning it has asked me to register. Upon
trying to register with my lifetime licence's user ID and licence, I'm
receiving a notification stating that one or other of these is
incorrect, even though I've typed it straight from the original
licence email. I assume that lifetime means lifetime, but could it be
that I need to purchase a new one due to the gap between the versions
of GoldWave that I've used? I was using version 5.68 until I
downloaded the latest update, so I'd be grateful to know whether or
not anyone thinks this might be the issue. Alternatively, any other
potential causes of the problem or solutions to the issue (including
the best method of contacting GoldWave, if that's required) will be
very much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Take care, Danny

[all-audio] Noisy Balls Debuts Thursday.

2020-09-17 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

When I read the subject line, I only read "noisy balls" which made my mind
go into over-boggling status, but on reading the whole post, perhaps this is
something worth following up.

Hi everyone,

Well, in less than 24 hours, Noisy Balls, the world's first blind cricket
podcast, will be debuting on your favourite podcast player.

Here are the all-important links you will need so you can easily tune in and
subscribe.

If you would like to look at our website and episode trailer, go on over to

 https://www.noisyballs.com

and you will be able to subscribe to the podcast using the links provided
there, as well as check out the Facebook group.

If you are using an Android or iOS device, you can go into any podcast
player, i.e. Google Podcasts, Podcast Addict, Apple Podcasts, Overcast,
downcast, basically anything that has pod or cast in its name, and search
for Noisy Balls and we will automatically pop up and I encourage you to
subscribe so you do not miss any of our shows.

FYI, we are listed in Spotify, Deezer, TuneIn, iHeartRadio and Pandora, so
if you use these providers, look us up and you will be able to subscribe
that way as well.

You can also use a Google or Alexa smart device or speaker and ask it to
"play the latest episode of Noisy Balls" and you can even ask that device to
subscribe you to the podcast whilst it is playing.

As a last resort, if you are having trouble finding us, you can copy and
paste the following RSS link into any podcast player and Noisy Balls will
immediately pop up:

https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1330621.rss

If you require any assistance, shoot me through an email to

feedb...@noisyballs.com

and I would be happy to talk you through the whole process.

Finally, you can join in on the conversation on Facebook at

https://www.facebook.com/groups/noisyballs

Having already pre-recorded a few episodes, I would suggest that even if you
are not a cricket fan, I truly feel that you will get a lot out of this
podcast, as we will have regular guests contributing who's life stories are
truly astounding.

Warm regards,

[all-audio] a strange cd writing problem, now solved.

2020-09-14 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

My disc writing problem has been solved, really, it proved to be very simple
but, to me, not obvious, though, to be honest it had occurred to me as a
passing thought.

Below, is a list of the tracks I planned to write, but there are two names
associated with track 7, the first name is the one which would not work, the
second is the name of the file which works.

It seems the name given to the track was too long, nothing came up when
using BurnForFree advising of the problem.

 1 - A note from Colin.mp3

2 - Geoff Barker 2007 11 10 second hour contains a chat with Vince Egor.mp3

3 - Geoff Barker 2014 02 22 - second hour music and chat with Vince Ega.mp3

4 - Geoff Barker 2015 06 06 - including a talk with British Rock‘n’Roll
pioneer Vince Eager about his album '75 Not Out'.mp3

5 - Geoff Barker 2016 01 09 - with Charlie Gracie and Vince Eager.mp3

6 - Geoff Barker 2017 01 28 with Vince Eager.mp3

7 - Geoff Barker 2017 09 30 A Tribute to Jack Good, where Geoff talks with
singer, Vince Eager, about his memories of the legendary TV and
record-producer.mp3

7 - Geoff Barker 2017 09 30 A Tribute to Jack Good, where Geoff talks with
singer, Vince Eager, about his memories of the legendary TV and
record-producer.mp3

8 - Geoff Barker 2018 08 12 includes a chat with Billy Fury's friend and
package-tour partner, Vince Eager.mp3

I have now written the disc and all tracks play properly from the disc.

Re: [all-audio] Converting an AVI file with GoldWave to mp3

2020-06-24 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings Stuart,

You can split any file in GW using cue markers.

1. Open the file you want to split.

2. At start of file press q, this puts in the first marker.

3. However you desire, find the next and subsequent places you want to split
into tracks and once satisfied it is the right place, press q.

4. When completely marked, go to edit menu into q points sub menu and enter
on split file.

5. You are now in a dialogue which is mostly self-explanatory. By default,
the tracks will be saved in the file's current settings. I am sure you can
now navigate round the menu no problem.

6. I suggest do not delete the master file with marks until you have checked
the tracks are the way you desire.

You do not place a q marker after the place where you want to split the last
track, nor must you in any way edit the file once the markers are placed
apart from realizing a problem after the last q has been placed, you can
edit anything after the last marker is placed in the remainder of the file
and go on to place markers as necessary.

Greetings,

I know nothing about audio cable, I am discussing a function in total

Re: [all-audio] Increasing the Speed of a WAV File

2020-06-04 Thread Colin Howard
Darran,

Pleased it worked for you.

There are other values in the tabs but not altogether sure how these can be
used, maybe more trials experimenting with these setting could produce
better quality sound.

As, no doubt, you have noticed, there are other algorythms available, but I
have found the first one, similarity, gives consistently the best results.

Greetings,

I am surprised in TR you are using the stereo mix, I do not for live
streams, I capture the sound off the stream by using background recording.

Then, again, what live streams are you taking?

I can supply you with direct links for all the BBC streams plus a few others
such as The Ride Radio Etc.

Do you know how to use TR's background recording function?

I use it extensively and can take about five streams on the same machine
together and none interfere with each other, maybe I could have more, think
this is rather dependent on my broadband capabilities.

I can have them all set to background mode, meaning I don't hear the
streams, I can go into any and play as it records, stopping play leaves play
at the stop point and resuming picks up. You can wind back or forward but
when you meet the point of recording, play goes back to the start.

If you want more info, please come back privately to me at:

version is V8.3Pro, I do have V8.6Pro but being happy with the older one,

Re: [all-audio] Trying To Convert File To MP3

2020-06-04 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

I agree, I've converted .mp4 files using my GW V5.70 without problems.

One way in GW to do this is, create a new file and save it to the name and
format required using ctrl+s, delete it's contents, switch to the file you
want to convert, select the whole thing and paste into the other file. Save
the resulting file, this stops at least one unnecessary conversion hence
loss of fidelity.

I've been using GW since V5.12 over about the last fourteen or so years.

not know it but this is what switch would have been doing in the background
I am guessing that something wasn’t carried across to the mp3 file. This
will cut down on the number of downward conversions. Which is important
because each conversion further detail is lost, hence their name lossy

Re: [all-audio] Increasing the Speed of a WAV File

2020-06-04 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

GoldWave's time warp facility will achieve this. Go to menu and effects, to
time warp, go to first preset which is similarity, tab across to specify
change in length or percent, mine is by default set to percent, decide
which you need, tab again and you will see an appropriate value, amend as
desired, tab round to ok, enter, job complete. Suggest try on a small
sample first, if happy, undo and apply to required total of audio.

Be aware, as this is quite a complex algorythm, it may take a fairly long
time and also be aware make several small changes rather than one large
change. Make sure your undo scheme can cope with a largish numbers of
ctrl-z, I have mine set to 15, on my system, the maximum allowed seems to be
20, not sure if this is a GoldWave or system limit. It can be found under
options then go down to file storage, on my system is labelled undo lefels.

I am still using GW V5.70, on both WXP laptop and W7 desktop.

Re: [all-audio] A Zoom question.

2020-05-21 Thread Colin Howard
Joe,

I asked the original sender if the cam needs power, it seems it can be
powered even from an USB hub like mine.

I've sent the info via my P.A to her son who has an Amazon account, hope he
is able to order it for me to be delivered at my home address, hope, then,
it is a simple process of plugging in, finding the device in my Windows 7
sounds and audio devices and enabling same.

However, before attempting this, hope to avail myself of a pair of eyes to
peruse the documentation rather than go ploughing in feet first and possibly
damaging my system!

On a personla note, you did not come back to me about Paul David's online
problems whereas both Terry and Kevin did. It seems he's now sorted, had an
engineer out yesterday evening to replace his faulty power unit.

I'll look it up but am aware of possible delays.

https://amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07FNB2KDQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8=1

Very easy to use, USB connection, no set up or drivers required, it just
works when plugged in, on a Windows 10 machine anyway.

It includes an integrated microphone and no switches required. Zoom uses
Alt + A to switch mike on or off and Alt + V to switch video on or off.

The camera is designed to hook over a monitor but will stand on a flat
surface with tilt and also has a standard threaded hole in the base to
accept a camera tripod or similar.

I'm sure there are cheaper but this one is good quality and provides HD
video.

Hope that helps, good luck

Kind Regards,
Mike

[all-audio] A Zoom question.

2020-05-18 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

Please can anybody advise what kind of webcam I can purchase. Currently
using Windows7 on a desktop, I want it to be purely plug-in-and-use, with no
additional setup, in colour, presumably with a mike, the WebCam, capable of
simply standing on a desk or table useable from a un-powered USB hub.

Presently, I only have an USB mike but would like to show video of my self
when attending meetings.

I assume when, in the Zoom I am advised video is off, some kind of switch on
the cam ought to put it on, same with mike which when I join I am advised
audio is muted. This, I unmute using alt with a as instructed by the Zoom
system.

I have no sight and no readily accessible sighted assistance, therefore, the
WebCam for which I am looking must be totally accessible for me.

Where can I obtain such a basic WebCam please?

Thanks.

Re: [all-audio] A couple of gold wave questions

2019-12-09 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

Sorry this is so late but have been suffering email and pc problems for the
last few weeks and only just seen your post.

I am using GW V5.70 but what I write applies equally to your version.

1. To enable jumping in small increments, you need to set the zoom level.
When GW opens a file, normally the screen shows in visual form the whole
length, hence moving markers / arrows, moves a percentage of the whole file.

In GW, go to the view menu, ensure scrollock (ctrl l) is checked, this
enables arrow / marker movements. Go down the menu, you will find loads of
zoom-related entries, zoom in is shift up, zoom out shift down, then there
are several presets, such as zoom to ten seconds, zoom to one secont . . .
what these mean is only the specified length of the file is shown on the
screen hence the arrow / marker values are appropriately changed. I mostly
tend to set my zoom rate at one second, which is alt with one.

To help, you may care also to set the edit field in the play tab, this
follows the rewind/wind forward settings and, certainly in versions before
any of the V6 ones, by default is set to 0.00, I have mine set to 0.15,
which means whenever I move a marker or arrow, I hear fifteen hundredths of
the zoom value, in most cases this is adequate for my editting and setting
this field increases both accuracy and speed of complex edits and use of
other effects.

2. The three play controls are intended to be used to access the file in
different ways. I have mine set as follows which gives me all the
flexibility I could desire.

Play1, executed by F2 is set to play all, meaning it starts at the beginning
of the file.

Play2, executed by F3, I have set to play selection, meaning I play anything
between start and end marker.

Play3, executed by F4 which, in versions below 6 is not set by default, I
have set to play view, meaning it plays whatever is showing on the screen.

These can be set in the play tab of control properties.

When GW first opens the file all these play controls start at the beginning
and play the file in it's entirity, their action is, thus, ruled by your
settings of zoom, you can, therefore, see how important setting the best
zoom rate for your needs is of the utmost importance.

Late though I am, hope the above explanations prove to be useful and if I
can assist further, having used GW in it's various forms since 2006, please
get in touch.

2019-07-25 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

Having read the thread, one comment.

If the ?dl=0 is left and the link is to a folder, the recippient can
download individual items from a folder. If the ?dl=0 is changed to ?dl=1
for a folder link, I, using Windows 7 on a desktop machine am invited to
download the folder as a .zip file. The folder structure is maintained.

I do use WinZip rather than the W7 offering, as I find this by far and away
the most flexible system.

Re: [all-audio] Saving settings in GoldWave.

2018-08-27 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

all settings, one could save them in GW, for instance, on this XP machine, I
do:

Esc and control,

p for programs,

then cursor down to GoldWave,

then right arrow into the sub menu, first GoldWave, second GoldWave help,
third GoldWave manual and fourth GoldWave Setup.

Going into this item, I am presented with a list of things, these can be set
as desired, virtualized window here is what I then see.

GoldWave Setup Options
Disable effect plug-ins
Disable file format plug-ins
Disable visual plug-ins
Do not use OpenGL
Disable Wave Audio Compression Manager
Ignore floating point errors
Disable Cue/Info/New warning messages
Disable background waveform drawing
Allow playback while recording
Do not force windows on top
Assume low priority processing
Reset audio devices every time
Redraw Sound windows indirectly (no flicker)
Force screen reader mode
Backup Settings... Restore Settings...
OK Cancel Help

If I backup settings, I receive a file named:

GoldWaveSettings.gws

on my W7 machine, using the same program, I cannot find the equivalent
mechanism. This would enable me to transport my own settings to use them
elsewhere. The keyboard save/install is still present and easily
accessible.

I want to do the same thing on W7 W10 or whatever, in V6.32 and, presumably,
in the just released V6.35.

[all-audio] Saving settings in GoldWave.

2018-08-27 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

On my XP machine, including GW V5.70, I could save settings, if I did escape
and control, then cursored through the programs list down to GoldWave, then
cursored right into the setting, besides altering such things as playback
and loads of other items, I could save the settings. On my W7 machine using
the same program and also in V6.32 and probably also in V6.35 received but
not yet examined, could find no way of saving settings.

Please can anybody point me as to how I may achieve this?

Thanks.

Re: [all-audio] recording with a software timer

2018-03-19 Thread Colin Howard
Joe,

TotalRecorder will do exactly what he needs, least the version I have which
is V8.3PRO will.

I use it all the time to record whilst away, I can have up to five streams
recording on one pc at the same time but this obviously must depend largely
on the capacity of the broadband available.

TR needs the actual streaming link, such as, for radio 4 fm:

http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_radio4fm_mf_p

Go to tools, down to scheduler and enter.

Then do alt n for new, enter.

You are now on the general tab, first field is comment, enter a short
comment which helps one negotiate through the list of jobs, then tab to
radio buttons, record, background play, default is record, this causes the
sound to play whilst recording, I go down to background. next two radio
buttons, absolute time and duration, default is absolute time this I use, no
idea about use of duration.

4 radio buttons, start / stop time, default once, below is weeklyh, daily
and special, I've not investigated special.

Next, series of check boxes, what these are depends on the last setting,
once gives you date spin box for year, month and day, defaults to current
date, cursor up/down to set required date then next tab is start-stop time
hh mm ss for each. Daily shows spin boxes for actual time, hours, minutes,
seconds for start then same for end. default is all zero, cursor up/down to
set for each. Weekly shows 9 selections, weekdays, weekends, then each day
starting with Sunday. Special, which I have never used, shows a settings
button, I do not know what this is or how it works.

Next, having chosen (daily has already been set) we have spin boxes for
start time hh mm ss and end time hh mm ss.

Now start-stop time now, use predefined cryteria, advanced buttons, I've
left these alone at default.

Next the url for the stream.

Next, is a more button, left this alone.

Then two radio buttons one says let TR choose the file name the other you
choose the file name into which the recording will be saved. On my system
in the my music folder, I have a folder called TR DownLoads, in this, a
folder for 2018, within this, a folder for each month, within this a folder
for each day, within this, TR would place the file in the form of the stream
url plus date and time, so far, I have not been able to find a way of
ensuring TR saves other than in .mp3 128kbps 44,100Hertz stereo, maybe one
of the buttons mentioned above makes this possible, or one of the remaining
buttons. The TR Downloads folder is populated as TR needs to set anything
up.

Next edit field for file name, next file name button, then checkbox create a
new track separator for each clip when background recording by default is
unchecked, then ok, cancel, help.

Jobs can be exported / imported.

Having created your job(s), go to apply, return, ok, return, job is
completed.

You cannot alter scheduled jobs when TR is running a scheduled job.

Hope this rather brief explanation is sufficiently clear.

[all-audio] When ripping disks!

2018-01-31 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

I have a double disk album called "The Ella Fitzgerald Collection" and when
ripping disk 1, all fine, tracks numbered and titled, album titled and
ripped successfully. Second disk, same album, "unknown album" "unknown
artist" and "track 001" . . . 00n!

I threw it at Winamp still no joy.

Can anybody please supply links for other than CDDB (I think it is) where
this may be completed?

I am using PowerToGo for ripping, which came with my Windows7 system.

Thanks!

[all-audio] Talking Timer program for Windows.

2018-01-13 Thread Colin Howard
I saw this on a techy group to which I subscribe, I plan to give it a go and
am passing it on.

The text from the sender is below.

Hi All.

Some of you may know, I'm a developer. In my spare time I also do the
odd small project, mostly audio games so far.

However a friend of mine asked me to write a talking timer program for him
and as I was quite surprised one didn't already exist I've put it up on
my website as a free download.

It's for windows and is simple to use, select count up or count down, set
how long you want it to run and hit start.

You can choose to have automatic speech as the timer runs, can choose an
initial amount of time before the timer starts, weather the voice used is
recorded or TTs and so on.

The program is freely available from

http://ndadamson.com/index.php?slab=n-a-soft-software

Just click on the talking timer link.
