Good to meet you Maritza, and thank you for Signing In. I think this must
be the oldest thread on the Google Group for Arches now ... I see I started
in in March 2013. So lots of expertise to draw on, and good to have your
perspective on MapBox..

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2021-01-27 Thread Edmund Lee
Hello Antione, and welcome to the Arches project Google group. It must be
fascinating to be involved in such a internationally significant project as
REPERAGE, and to work through how Arches software for recording inventories
at a landscape or area level can be applied to work on a single building
such as Notre-Dame de Paris. Is anyone else using Arches just for a single
building or site?

Your part of the world looks truly beautiful

Hello Hien, and a very warm if belated welcome to the Arches Google Group.
Thanks for Signing In. Here you will find a global network of expertise in
the deployment of Arches, and I trust the community will be able to answer
any questions you have. I've never had the chance to visit New Jersey, but
hope to be able to at some point in the future when we can all travel and
meet in the real world. It looks beautiful and very historic.

Hi,

I work as an associate professor at the school of architecture in
Marseille, I give lectures about built heritage and digital humanities,
among others. My time left is spent within the CNRS-MAP laboratory in which
I'm particularly involved with the "scientifc workshop" which run alongside
the restoration project of Notre-Dame de Paris. In the REPERAGE project, we
gathered a team focused on archeology, computer vision and linked data to
document and retrace through space-time the path taken by fallen ribs

There, I should cite Markus Siivola as I'm also "currently evaluating and

is mandatory for us, I already made a github post

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2020-06-10 Thread Markus S.
Hi,

I work for Parks Canada in a project for renewing our digital platform for
heritage places. I am currently evaluating and testing Arches v5 to see how
well it would fit our project - so far so good. I have a background in
information systems, web app projects, GIS, project management and software
development - a jack of all trades, master of none. I live and work in
Revelstoke, Canada.

When I look out the window, I see the Monashee Mountains enveloped in some
big old rain clouds.

Regards,

Markus Siivola

Hi everyone and thank you for the welcome to the group!

I am an archaeologist and a GIS expert. I've been working as such during
the past 20 years and during the past 10 I have been trying to find better
database solutions for archaeological projects and cultural heritage. I'm
also a co-creator and a co-CEO of Takin.solutions Ltd, a company offering
ICT solutions for CH, one of the main services of which being semantic
database management. I have started exploring Arches during the past few
months and am interested in developing a sustainable platform for
archaeological projects (both on-site and museum data collection).

I am currently working in Greece.

Hi Everyone,

This is Mahmoud Abdelrazek. I am an Egyptian geologist turned data
scientist. I have some experience with GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry
and web development. This is such a great group of people and I am so
excited to join in.

My task with arches is to edit a certain implementation to add a few custom
features which will be also available for the community. I have been
reading through the documentation and the code in the past few weeks to get
familiar with arches but I will need your help and advice.

Sadly, I am not in my city right now. It is the one which Rudyard Kipling
once mentioned "If you truly wish to find someone you have known and who
travels, there are two points on the globe you have but to sit and wait,
sooner or later your man will come there: the docks of London and Port
Said"

Please do feel free to reach out for a chat if you may, and thank you again
for making this group available to us

Hi

My background is as a computer programmer turned web developer who now
works in various areas of digital heritage (photogrammetry, 3D modelling,
GIS) and I'm looking to use an implementation of Arches to migrate an
existing database of coastal heritage sites endangered by erosion and other
risks.

When I'm not doing that, I'm chair of a local heritage group which protects
and promotes a unique cave site in Scotland containing a wealth of Pictish
and early Christian carvings and whenever possible like nothing better than
climbing into a trench, trowel in hand.

Sounds like you are just around the corner from a couple of our team also

Interested to hear more about your experiences with Arches, especially as

in Belfast, NI - we do web, geospatial and open data analysis. We link into
a local open tech group, Avata Industries, with design, development,
training, numerical analysis, communications and security specialists.

What is your interest in Arches?

We have grown by building open source tools for public sector data, with
PostGIS, Python and Leaflet, so Arches has been a natural step. Even more,
we were looking at various ways to support the museum sector, so we are
keen to see how we can work in with the Arches community! Alongside this,
our Kubernetes, VueJS and data science projects give us wider open data
interests - we want to explore intercompatibility with Arches in a number
of ways.

Where am I working?

Working in Belfast, we are never far from significant heritage sites!
Currently based in Weavers Court, we are working out of the “Half Day”
school - this was built in the 1800s, where children would study before
heading to work in the Albion Clothing factory. Nowadays, it is the home of
a tech community called Farset Labs, with a number of projects, companies
and start-ups in the mix.

What can I see out the window?

The Europa Hotel, one of Belfast’s most iconic 20th century landmarks, and
if I stand on my chair I can see the top of the Grand Opera House, designed
by theatre architect Frank Matcham and opened on 23 December 1895.

With best wishes,
Phil

Greetings Arches Enthusiasts,

I'm a developer working with Martha S, and fairly thrilled to be delving
into Arches here in Los Angeles.

At the moment I can see the rooftops of the nearby houses, which are
considered to be historic by our paltry western U.S. standards --- meaning
roughly a hundred years old. But if you consider that in terms of number of
earthquakes survived, it counts!

Hello, All,

I am a consultant working with a client in Los Angeles to run Arches
in-house. They are experienced with Arches, but not with hosting. We'll be
getting the newest version going and setting the client up to manage it in
addition to its data.We want this to be as smooth a transition as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help.

As I am working downtown, I get an eyeful of heritage value buildings from
every window -- courthouses, The Music Center, Disney Hall, the Biltmore
Hotel, the Triforium, the library, etc., etc., etc. Of course, I'm sitting
in a gem of a building as I write this. Who says Los Angeles has no
reverence for the past? We haven't allowed it all to slip away.

Good to be here,
Martha

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2018-12-12 Thread amyklebust
Hello Arches Forum Members,

I recently joined the Arches Project team at the Getty Conservation
Institute. From what I’ve seen here already, there is a great wealth of
knowledge-sharing and support between members. In my role on the Arches
Project, I’m intent to identify and share more resources and tools, so
community members can excel in their Arches related work.

What is your interest in Arches?

With ever greater threats to our global cultural heritage, both
environmental and man-made, it is becoming increasingly vital to identify,
document and manage heritage resources, in order to protect them. Arches
is an important part of the solution and the possibilities inspire me!
Plus, the open-source nature of Arches makes it naturally a community-based
platform and that’s rewarding too.

Where am I working?

I work at the Getty Center in Los Angeles where the Getty Conservation
Institute is located. Specifically, I’m on the Arches Project team and
collaborate with my colleagues on everything Arches related.

What can I see out of the window?

My office space faces an exterior courtyard with lots of green foliage.
When I walk outside the building, I’m greeted by an expansive view of Los
Angeles; from the (currently snowcapped) mountains eastward, to the
shimmering Pacific Ocean to the west.

Hello all!

   - what is your interest in Arches?
  - I work for the Historic Environment Division, part of the
Department for Communities, Northern Ireland. I'm interested in Arches
because it looks to provide many of the functions that we might look for
in
a potential replacement for the various heritage asset databases that we
have. I started out as a field archaeologist and have become involved in
digital heritage management by osmosis and while I like to think that

  - In the National Monuments and Building Record (NI) office, which is
  in the Klondyke Building, Belfast.
   - what can you see out of the window? Is there any heritage in your view?
  - Can I even see a window from my seat? Just about, but there's not
much of a view. The one thing I can see out the window are the external
red
brick walls of our building, which is a former Retort House built in 1891
and which formed part of the Belfast Gasworks. It's not much to look at
from here, but I guess it counts as heritage.

Welcome Pat! I enjoyed browsing your cemetery website, quite interesting :)

I just wanted to give a heads up regarding developing Arches offline: last
time I tried this on an airplane I ran into trouble loading static files
(javascript, css).
I think at that time some of those files were loaded over an (online) CDN.
A quick look through the code indicates that this is not the case anymore,
but I would be sure to test it before boarding!

(Background info:

Welcome! Many thanks for signing in Pat and sharing your experience and
interests with us all. What a fascinating life! You have definitely come to
the right place. Here you will find the gurus that you seek to help you on

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2018-10-16 Thread Pat Lurcock
Hi,

After half a lifetime working as a government administrator in South
Georgia in the south atlantic, where I slowly developed a strong interest
in the cultural heritage (whaling, sealing, military, cemeteries) I am now
back in the UK and want to develop an online register of the Island's
Cultural Heritage sites as a public resource. Arches looks like the perfect
tool for the job. It covers all the angles that I have learned are
important for data management, is spatial, and free.

My background is quite IT strongish - I developed a lot of fishery and
harbour management databases, learning by reverse-engineering Access and
then MySQL databases to improve them. So I have set up MySQL servers,
apache, Access, MySQL (with Access front end). Also self-taught web
programming to develop my website documenting the island's cemeteries
(http://www.cems.wildisland.gs) first with a text editor then learning to
use a CMS (Joomla). More recently I have started learning GIS stuff using
QGIS, providing mapping and GPS support for a six-month rodent monitoring
project on South Georgia.

So now I am learning again. Virtual machine on my windows laptop running
Ubuntu - the Xenial version for Arches specifically. That was an uphill
struggle but I think I am there now.

Now I am installing Arches. The first try failed and I am hoping some
patient guru(s) might kindly guide me when I hit problems that I cannot
easily solve. I am dealing with a whole raft of new (to me) technologies so
there will be some very basic stuff that will have you rolling your eyes
skywards.

It seems the install script is not quite perfect and I'd like to contribute
by tweaking it in the light of my experience so that it will be a smoother
job for the next person.

My aim is to have a working installation on the laptop by the end of the
month. Then I can develop the actual application over the next few months
when I will be at sea without Internet. Then next year I want to put it
online, probably using AWS. More learning.

Out of the window? The south Devon coast. On a good day, the heritage coast
of Dorset glows red in the distance. And just over the sea wall is a post
that used to stretch a chain to keep the U-Boats out of Teignmouth.

Cheers all,
Pat

2018-10-13 Thread Alison Dalgity

Hello Alex. Welcome to the Arches community!

It's great to hear that you are interested in getting involved in an
open-source project, and we obviously think that Arches is a fantastic
choice!

We are always encouraged when new people join the community, and especially
so if they're interested in playing an active role, as you seem to be. With
release of v4.3 and the data-collection app nearing completion, it's a
great time to join the effort.

We are hearing more and more from our colleagues in the heritage field,
both in the US and elsewhere, who have a need for technical assistance with
implementing, configuring, and customizing Arches, so you could find
yourself in demand before you know it.

Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions at all,
whether technically based, heritage related, or otherwise.

Best for now,

Alison

Greetings,

I am an undergraduate student at University of Alabama in Huntsville
majoring in Computer Engineering. I am trying to get experience in coding
and teamwork by getting involved in an open source project. After looking
at a few possible projects, I felt Arches would be a good project to get
involved with because one of my side interests is ancient history. I am
currently working on understanding the various facets of the project so
that I can effectively contribute towards it in the future.

Hello everyone,
I am Michel Salameh from Ramallah, Palestine. i am an architect restorer
working in the field of architectural conservation in Palestine since 2008.
Currently currying out my master degree in science of conservation in
architectural surfaces at the University of Malta.

While currying out my dissertation research talking about wall paintings in
rural Palestine i came across Arches project. Therefore, i will be using
Arches in my research to document the sites that i am studying. Using
Arches with its properties will hopefully introduce Arches and encourage
organizations and individuals working in the conservation sector to further
use it.

Palestine is rich with its heritage that was accumulated through history by
different cultures that passed by and settled there. Malta as well has the
prehistoric mega temples. However, from my window in Malta i can see the
magnificent Maltese architectural heritage.

Best regards.

Out from my window, i can only see big surrounding the building and a
beautiful sunny day.

2018-04-20 Thread survey . wessex
Hi Ed et al,

I am Jens Neuberger working for Wessex Archaeology
.
As you might know Wessex has a long running interest in all sorts of
Heritage Management system. My particular interest is focussed on mobile
data acquisition. With the mobile app on the doorstep (in summer I hope) we
decided to give Arches a try and check how capable it is.

Looking out of my window I see trees and the rooftops of an inner courtyard
of an Art Noveau building block so typical for Berlin.

Cheers

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2017-08-20 Thread David Osborne
Hi Ed

Thanks for the welcome! We're at an early stage with our project at the
moment, so haven't yet met with any issues but I'm sure I'll raise them
here if/when they arise. So far, we've been setting up Arches 4.0 on a
MacBook under MacOS (Sierra 10.12.6) using the Lincoln data for
demonstration to interested parties, which I've repeated on my own MacBook
as well as in Ubuntu 16.04 running in VMware Fusion. I'll be setting up the
production system in a cloud service using Linux.

I'm starting to consider Arches for my PhD data. I'm planning to set up a
database of isotope data and fortunately, Postgres is my preferred
software. I'll also be incorporating GIS and R for statistical analysis, so
Arches would tick at least some of those boxes.

regards
David

Hi David, and welcome to the Arches community!

It's good to hear that Arches is being adopted at Jersey Heritage. Maybe
you could post a bit more about the particular issues arising with that
installation? I'm sure your experience will be useful to other Arches sites.

The PhD sounds fascinating. Do you see a potential use for Arches in
documenting your research? Animal husbandry sites? Collection
documentation? Prehistoric transhumance routeways?

All the best

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2017-08-15 Thread David Osborne
Hello all

I'm fairly new to Arches, as I've joined a small project team to set up an
Arches installation for Jersey Heritage (Jersey is the largest of the
Channel Islands, near the northern coast of France). My career has been in
IT and for some time now, I've worked for Information Services in the
University of Nottingham, so on our Arches project, I'm the technical nerd!
I'm happiest with Linux, MacOS and open-source software, so I'm finding
Arches fun to work with. However, my academic background is in archaeology
and I will be going part-time from the end of September to start a PhD here
at Nottingham, looking at diet and mobility of animals and people in
prehistoric Lincolnshire (from the Neolithic to the Iron Age). With Lincoln
being fairly close, the "disco_data" example data for Arches includes
several sites I know.

As I write this from my office desk, sunshine is streaming through the
windows and outside, I can see a landscaped garden area between two blocks
of our buildings. No heritage to speak of, although our King's Meadow
Campus where I'm based used to be the old Carlton TV studios, so that's
some sort of late 20C heritage of a sort.

David

Hi Matt, and welcome to the Arches community! It's good to hear from you.
You'll find a mix of deep coding skills and broad heritage expertise here
to help and advise, and to learn from your experience. Could you maybe say
a bit more about what the UDS is used for at Historic England? I see you
also posted about documentation. I'll leave Arches project team folk to
respond to that - there is a lot available, so do ask specific questions if
you need to know more.

Hey Ilya,

I used to head the Cultural Heritage Mapping Project

 two
years ago, and Arches was supposed to be our mapping platform to supplement
Wikipedia articles for all identified historic resources, but the local
Wikimedia chapter effed it up, so we disbanded and we regrouped to where we

Just telling you. Haha! Cheers!

P.S. I'm still friends with the people there at the chapter. :)

2016-11-03 Thread Allison Lee
Hello everyone!

My name is Allison Lee, and while I've worked a bit with Arches, I'm new to
joining the discussion forum so I'll introduce myself here. My interest in
Arches came from my graduate studies in Hong Kong, where I joined a project
to document the historic buildings of the University of Hong Kong. This
project remained rather small, as it was more of a pilot initiative to see
what kinds of hurdles we would face in applying the software and
terminology to an Asian/Hong Kong context. We also toyed a bit with a test
site for Yangon.

I am now based in Kathmandu with UNESCO, where we are attempting to
implement the software. Also not an easy task... but we are slowly
chipping away at it.

There's no window directly next to me, but when I look out my coworker's
window I can see sun and blurry shapes (the window is very dirty from
Kathmandu dust). This city is full of beautiful temples/stupas/palaces,
but unfortunately none near this office. But once in a while, I can hear
some car horns and prayer bells!

Nice to meet everyone :)

[Arches] Re: Signing in

2016-10-14 Thread Stuart Cakebread
Hi Ed and everyone else,

I work in cultural resource management, managing the historic environment
record (HER) for Greater London. Prior to this I've worked in other HERs
in England, and for the Council for British Research in the Levant in
Jordan and Syria.

What is your interest in Arches?

I'm working on a project with the GCI and another English HER to develop a
new heritage management system using Arches that we and other HERs could
use. In London we are keen to extend use of the HER beyond just the GLHER
team, but out to our colleagues in the London boroughs, to heritage
professionals, and to the general public, whether for interest or as
volunteers. I've used relational databases and ArcGIS, but I think open
source systems have a lot of potential, and they are something I've not
used before.

Where am I working?

Usually in Holborn, in the Historic England London Office, but to day at
home in Sittingbourne, Kent

What can I see out of the window?

I can see what's left of my vegetable patch after the slugs have munched
their way through it. Heritage wise, If I had x-ray vision and could see
through my dining room wall I would be looking at the Grade II listed
former Borden School, and before that agricultural college, and in the
evenings, when the wind is in the right direction I can hear the bells of
St Peter & St Paul's Borden (
https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1185731).

Sorry for the short hello, but the school pick-up run beckons!

Regards,

Stuart

Sounds lovely Jim - thanks!

We're now up to 317 members in this group. That's a lot of expertise...

If anyone else who has joined recently would like to share a bit about
themselves, their interest in Arches, (and what they can see out the
window) that would be great.

All the best

Hello Jim, and welcome to the Arches community!

As far as I can tell (though others may correct me - which would be great)
you are the first to mention historic garden recording here. From an
English perspective, of course, gardens are something of an obsession, and
we have a special register of nationally protected heritage just covering
parks and gardens - see
https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/what-is-designation/registered-parks-and-gardens/

Is anyone else working on horticultural heritage? How does Arches cope with
recording assets which are alive... any special data requirements?

Do remember to let us know what you can see out the window Jim!

All good wishes

2016-07-11 Thread Roshan Bhurtha
Hi Vincent. Thanks for the welcome!
I am glad you like our web site, but as I have said previously there is a
lot more to do . There are some bugs to be removed and our user interface
for 3DHOP is primitive. It needs a good overhaul. Our primary objective
was to show case a subset of our data, where users can then request more if
they like it.

I will start a thread regarding the use of 3DHOP if anyone wants to talk
about it. I also just started with the Arches install and don't have
anything up & running.

Your facebook page has interesting projects and I am looking forward to see
your web site !

regards
Roshan

2016-07-07 Thread Vincent Meijer
Hi Roshan,

Welcome to Arches! Your experience with documenting heritage and building
websites will be a valuable addition to the team.
Your website looks really good. I especially liked the animations where the
monument walls are stripped down to show what's behind them.

We both have quite similar jobs: I work for the Center for Virtualization
and Applied Spatial Technologies (CVAST) at the University of South
Florida. The center collects GIS and 3D data of (archaeological) heritage
sites and objects. (No website live yet, but here's our Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/USFCVAST/ )
Like you, I am tasked with anything IT, but I also go on field expeditions.
I just came back from a trip to Spain to scan monuments with terrestrial
laser scanners and photogrammetry.

I am also looking for ways of presenting our 3D data on Arches. For now I
plan on implementing 3DHOP for meshes and Potree for point clouds. I think
there are more people here interested in that, so I was hoping you could
start a new thread for us to explain how you integrated 3DHOP in your
current website. Have you automated anything? How do you store and deploy
the models? Things like that could be interesting for all of us.

Thanks and again: welcome to Arches!

Vincent

Hi Sara and welcome to the Group!

It's great to be welcoming a new member almost four years to the day after
the meeting, at the Getty in Los Angeles, that set up this group to support
the Arches project. A happy time for all of us who were there to remember.
The group here now has wide ranging expertise in the development,
installation and use of Arches to manage heritage, but I think you are the
first to be able to sign in with a link to an entry in a live Arches
installation recording what you can see out of the window! The first of
many I am sure.

All the best
Edmund

2016-06-10 Thread sara . cruz

Hello everyone,

I’ve recently joined the Office of Historic Resources for the City of Los
Angeles, California. In the near future I’ll be managing the
HistoricPlacesLA.org , an Arches
implementation that functions as the city’s official Historic Resources
Inventory.

My background is in architecture/planning and I have a graduate degree in
historic preservation. Though I have not managed a database or implemented
Arches before, I have experience working with GIS, as well as programs
utilized for architecture and web design. I am interested and excited about
the many ways Arches will help connect our departments and the public to
important information about our diverse historic resources. Surveying our
large city has been a large undertaking that we expect to completed in
2017. As you can imagine, we are eager to publish all of the data collected
from our SurveyLA efforts. I'm
excited to join the group, I am sure it will be of great help, especially
as we brainstorm the many ways the data could be used to better serve our
public.

I work out of Los Angeles City Hall, through the windows in our office I
can see a sunny downtown Los Angeles skyline as well as the DWP General
Office Building (John Ferraro Building)

which happens to be Los Angeles’ Historic Cultural Monument #1022.

Best,

Welcome to the Arches group Peter! here you will find no less than 311
colleagues from around the world who share your interest and can help
answer questions. So far its mostly on the technical side, and that is very
welcome! but as a heritage management professional rather than an IT
specialist I would also be interested to hear more about the different ways
people approach the broader questions in managing heritage data. But that's
maybe for another discussion thread.

All the best

I am interested in Arches because I am evaluating different approaches to
managing historic environment data.

I am working in the British Isles and from my office window I have a
splendid view of the west gate to the lower town of Lincoln (Lindum

Hello all,

My name is Vincent, I work for the Center for Virtualization and Applied
Spatial Technologies (CVAST), which is part of the University of South
Florida.

We specialize in collecting 3D and GIS data for both heritage and natural
conservation projects, both in Florida and around the world. We are
interested in using Arches as a base for our new application, which we will
be used for both documenting our data and presenting it to the public.

We have successfully containerized the Arches app with Docker (separate
containers for the web app, database and Elasticsearch). Now we are working
on customizing the app for our needs.

I can see nothing from my window, because there isn't one, since we are in
a basement on campus. I do work outside a lot with my laptop, usually next
to some nice fake Greek columns. I will take what I can get.

I'm exited about what Arches can bring us and I'm looking forward to
working with you all!
Vincent

Hi all,

My name is Ali and I work with Alberta Culture in Canada. We've been
interested in Arches for a couple of years now, but never had the resources
to get it setup. However, we've decided to not let lack of technical
ability get in our way and see what we can accomplish with the help of the
documentation and the forums. Our hope is that we can demonstrate the
capabilities of Arches to our management and hopefully get funding and
hardware to create a production system.

Through my window, I can see the snow-capped Rockies on the horizon and
parts of downtown Calgary. Although hidden by the skyscrapers, there are a
couple of designated buildings somewhere in that view.

Best regards,
Ali

Hi Jae,

Welcome to Arches. It can be tough to be the only IT person on a project,
so please take advantage of this forum as a place to ask any questions that
you may have. And please let us know what's missing in Arches,
particularly the things between what people expect and what Arches can do.
It would be really helpful for us to know what your groups expectations
are.

Cheers,

Hello Asmaa! and a warm welcome to the Arches project forum - I'm sorry

It's great to have a forum member who notices the pigeons! I too see

Project. I am a computer science graduate and I hold a master of computing.

Out of the main window in our premises I can see beautiful garden view full
of trees and palms, and I once saw some pigeons there.

I am glad I joined this active forum and I will be sending technical
questions in a separate thread.

[Arches] Re: Signing In

2015-07-30 Thread Adam Cox
Hi Annabel, I don't have experience with arches and windows, but it just
sounds like you need to let Windows know where to find your python
installation. The standard python location is C:\Python27. Check to see
if that's where python has been installed, and if not, you can find the
path by opening IDLE (just type IDLE into the start menu search) and using
these commands:

import sys
print sys.exec_prefix

reference (2nd answer)
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6767283/find-where-python-is-installed-if-it-isnt-default-dir

Once you know where python is installed, follow this to create a new
environment variable named PYTHONPATH and set it to reference the python
installation.

Here
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25153802/how-to-set-python-path-in-windows-7

is a good summary of how to do it. To get to the Environment Variables,
you can just type env in the windows start menu.

Be sure not to delete any existing path variables, and good luck!

We have tried installing Arches. We have used the instructions for use of

tell us where we are going wrong. What has been done so far:

 1) Made a folder called 'arches web' and downloaded all the dependencies
in it. Installation for the programs was done from the same location.
 2) Downloaded PostgreSQL 9.3 and PostGIS 2.x, GEOS, Python 2.7.6

 3) One is required to install virtualednv through pip only and this pip
has to be downloaded with python.

Now, although python is available on our system, we don't have its
path. We tried using get pip as a command in python command line. We tried
using the same in windows command prompt. We also tried reinstalling python
and calling it out through window powershell. Only to get the following
error: ' The term python is not recognised as the name of a cmdlet,
function, script file or operable function.' My understanding tells me it
has to do with the location we've chosen for our files.

Would appreciate some help in how to proceed

proposal that you're preparing to implement Arches for the Cane River National
Heritage Area. I had the pleasure of spending time in Natchitoches and the Cane
River National Heritage Area during the 2004 US/ICOMOS symposium there, so have
an idea of the types of heritage resources to be inventoried there.
If you would find it useful, the Arches project team would be happy to provide
feedback on your proposal. If you would like to follow up on that, feel free to
get in touch with me off-forum.

Best regards,

David Myers

Hello all,

My name is Adam Cox, and I'm currently putting a proposal together to implement
arches for the Cane River National Heritage Area here in Natchitoches,
Louisiana (USA). The project won't begin until this fall, hopefully by
October, but I'm really looking forward to carrying out this operation. The
heritage area already has a local resource file geodatabase (ESRI-style) that
was commissioned a few years ago, but it really isn't very accessible.
Therefore, the built-in web front-end that Arches provides is very appealing to
the parties involved. So, the project will really be an installation and
conversion endeavor. I'm very interested to see what comes out of the SOC, as
the top priority projects are all pieces that foresee as very useful to me, and
the larger success of Arches.

I expect to do a test install with the standard resource types, but am really
interested in the ability to customize and create new resource types (forgive
me, I'm still working on the Arches lingo). Specifically, one of the most
important cultural resource categories down here are graves, and I will be
incorporating at least one full cemetery. A resource type specifically for
graves is something I'm very interested in developing for my installation. I
have experience with Python, mostly in an ESRI setting, so I also look forward
to diving into the source code...

From my window I'd be able (were it light outside) to see the American
Cemetery, which is generally billed as the oldest cemetery in the Louisiana
Purchase. Many French epitaphs, a few revolutionary war veterans, and
overall, a beautifully peaceful place for a walk.

Cheers!
Adam

Hi Ed,

its good to see so much discussion on this forum!

Just a quick introduction on myself:

My name is Sjoerd van der Linde, and I am an associate professor of
heritage management at Leiden University. We are currently investigating
the possibility of implementing Arches on the island of St Kitts, as part
of our Nexus 1492 project. We have been in contact about this with David cc
and we are quite excited abuot the possibilities. Personally, I will be
mainly overseeing management issues, as I gladly leave the programming and
real tech issues to the PhD's which are much more capable than I in these
matters ;-)

If I loko out of my window I see a sad, but gladly sunny, industrial part
of our universiy, which is a shame, as we just recelty moved out of our
lovely old faculty of archaeology from the old center of Leiden.

Hello everyone!

I'm Virginia Gresham, a student at Connecticut College pursuing a degree in
Computer Science. Even though I just started coding eight months ago I
already know Python and currently am learning Java. I am really excited
about Arches interdisciplinary mission to link heritage and technology.
Over the past few years, I helped my town develop a cultural heritage
walking tour through our downtown while also being the captain of my high
school’s robotics team. Now that I am in college, I am looking to continue
pursuing both my passions for progress while examining the past. I learned
about Arches through Google's Summer of Code and I am interested in working
on the import and export improvements project. Outside my window is a
quintessential New England town, which actually has one of the highest
concentrations of colonial homes and the largest continuous town green in
all of New England.

Re: [Arches] Re: Signing in

2014-03-07 Thread Utsav
I looked up Stonehenge from this url http://goo.gl/w8S2cj and it just
seems fascinating to me really how much more we can do with arches. :)

As i have set-up arches on my Ubuntu, i found out that Stonehenge has been
described vividly by arches and it looks great :)

It seems to me it would be a good idea to expand arches to set-up another
prehistoric monument.:)

I know this wouldn't be easy so i want to divide it into phases:

Phase 1: (Must do phase) The minimum i want to do with my project is that i
would want to make sure i have a new prehistoric monument with all it's
inventories available on arches.

Phase 2:(If time permits)This url http://goo.gl/w8S2cj i embedded above
in this post also has a street view available.Street view seems a
fascinating concept, you can have the actual experience of visiting a site
(i)if you use the google street view api(link http://goo.gl/uLrMN1) and
(ii)if you can upload panorama pics of the site.
So this may seem a little ambitious but if we are allowed to take a
panoramic view,it will make google street view possible and make our
project look so good.

All explained,i do need a prehistoric site to base my project on and i want
the forum to decide which site would be the best. :)

Cheers :)

Yes,sir actually i think i may know a good deal about the tradition
and culture of India(i just wanted to keep my introduction short :D) and i
can start in a small way towards contributing to inventories of sites from
India. My interest in heritage blossomed from my reading of Dan Brown
novels and getting to understand the deep richness of any culture.

As i find out more about arches i will be asking more question about how
really the inventories work practically. One of the awesome things i feel is
that we can learn so much about a site by examining it's ruins and then get
to know more about the ancient culture of that place.

If it's possible, please do share some references about how inventories
 really work!

And robert gatson has guided me a lot in setting up arches on my ubuntu.

And it's so nice to get to know someone who has a vast trove of knowledge
 on culture and history.

Welcome to the Arches project forum Utsav!

As well as computer and IT specialists on this group you will find many
members such as myself who share your passion for the past, and work in
heritage organisations aimed at doing what we can to ensure that the
significance for all of us of heritage sites is maintained for future
generations. Do feel free to ask questions about how heritage inventories
work in practice, as well as the technical questions about Arches.

And of course there's a lot more than just the Taj Mahal out there...
http://asi.nic.in/asi_monu_whs.asp (and that's just the World Heritage
 Sites).

Everyone... Do we have any specialists in the archaeology of India in the
 group?

I get really excited when i get to know organizations that help in
protecting our cultural heritage. It's a pity that the vast treasure of our
monuments are destroyed just because it's inventory is not organized.I am a
computer science engineering student from india .I chatted quite a lot with
robert gatson yesterdayon irc who guided me in building arches into my
linux ubuntu 12.04 yesterday. This is a screenshot of my system with vagrant
up command that setup up virtual vm into my system ..
http://postimg.org/image/han8ufvqb/ .I am really eager to start
contributing to arches and make this dream of preserving our heritage come
 through . :)

And well, india has a rich history of culture.Indian civilization is a
very ancient one and some of the special things like yoga originated from
here and we have the taj mahal ..yayy :)

Hello all, ... and welcome in particular to those who have joined the
 Arches Discussion Forum recently.

This online group was initially set up for the project team, and has
just recently been opened up as the public, so some of us haven't met
before. How about we all share a bit of background, just like we would if
we were meeting in the real world? If that sounds good to you, reply to
this thread and share with the group some or all of the following:

- what is your interest in Arches?

- where in the world are you working?

and, just to make it a bit more fun,

- what can you see out of the window? Is there any heritage in your
view?

I look forward to getting to know everyone a bit better!
