Re: Death match a new beginning, online roleplaying science fiction MMO

Hi everyone!Im quite new for this game as well. But it was so cool to test though actually.Since I was involved with swamp a lot.It was sound nice to me though.By the way look like this game with jfw Its still did not work though.Cause Ive been testing its still reading nothing in there.Thats why maybe if you have time please kindly fix.Cause so many folks still useing jfw for playing the game though. But for NVDA it was fine though.By the way Nicely done. Its will be possible or not that you will include the readme of the game in the game as well.Because I have to go to game directory to search for the readme file in there. Its might be difficult for beginner users though if like that.Hope you will be consider to create again in the version of the game.Best!Bee!

Theres like 5 ways, but if I recall correctly the fastest is alt+shift+q, x. Alt+shift+q brings up a handy list of stuff and the second key quickly selects one. If Im wrong about the keystroke and you cant find it in that list, its probably in view.

Well if you have a limitede connection that is understandable. Fortunately, I am either in my flat where I have a ridiculously fast dsl monster (actually far faster than I really need but it was a free upgrade of the equipment), while at my parents though the connection is much slower in speed its still there, and there are no audiogames (even swamp), that Ive seen that really cause major lag with it. On the other hand, when I used to stay for three weeks in a guest house at the buxton light opera festival, I ironically could only get an internet connection at the pub! . Actually I think people mustve thought I was a real alkie, sinse when not at light opera events I was in there in the mornings, (though usually I just drank coffee). At that point I couldnt play online games, indeed I played through most of castaways (in offline

Re: changing symbols in jaws

1: move the PC curser onto the char so it has focus.2: Press JawsKey+d to open the dictionary manager.3: If an additional diolog box opens asking for the name of the new .jdf file, press escape to close it. Otherwise, type control+shift+d to open the default file. You should now hear default.jdf jaws dictionary manager, when you press JawsKey+t. If you dont do this, then the changes will only affect the application youre currently working in.4: the focus should be on the add button. If not, tab to it.5: press enter to open the add diolog.6: If you did step 1 correctly, you should now be in an edit field containing the symbol or word you want to rename.7: tab once to the next edit field, and type the word you want jaws to speak whenever it reads this symbol.8: press enter.9: close the dictionary manager, and save the changes.

Re: A home for Swamp campaigns

Hi,I created a dropbox folder to do just that, have a place that would contain all the swamp campaigns, bunch of code that would be useful to campaign writers, I.E item list, special items etc. However, what with uni extra classes and stuff, I really havent had the time to keep it organized, and it has turned into quite a mess. However, it still has some good campaigns like the pyramid, Fyquest (one of the campaigns I really like, I would go so far as to say the best out of them all.) and quite a few more that I cant remember right now.At first I had decided that all campaigns would be compressed with all their files and sounds, and in order to keep the folder small, campaigns that were quite big would have a file containing a link to themNow its random campaign text files, with just their sounds zipped and unnecessary sounds which were already included in swamp were included as well for some reason that is not clear to me.If someon
e is willing to reorganize it and stuff, I am willing to pass on ownership and admin rights to them, as it stands I hardly do anything with it at all. Not that I wouldnt like to,but alas I dont have the time toOf course, if you just want to create a webpage for them, host them somewhere, feel free to do so, and if you dont already have access to them write to me to get a inviteE-mail preferred as I dont really check my pm that oftengrryf

GAAAH! Im trying to beat the second map in the Getting Started pack and I just cant win! Its no fun being outnumbered two to one, especially when I keep being surrounded as soon as I let the enemy make their first moves, and then three of them attack one of my characters and thats it. I dont know how to win with this! Ive tried using my fire-mage to power up the warriors weapons, but although that kills a couple of beasts with a few rounds, there are still six others that are unharmed, and all eight can still attack! I cant spread everyone too far apart because then my healer cant heal anyone, and so I keep everyone close together and thats just asking to be hemmed in! AAH! *smacks head into desk*Other than this, Im loving the setup so far, and its given me interesting ideas for how battles could be in my own game when I start building it at a future stage—more the ability to choose which character in your party can attack than the turn-based thing because running out of AP is the. Worst.

[[wow]], impressive acting, though if you have the original voice track with out music still? I can help pan the voices so that they sound different from each other more, like 2 different people, I also can spice it up with more footsteps and things if you want, its no trouble, and wouldnt take long. Seriously though, excellent use of objects around you for sound props, thats what they call foley in film, when you do that on the spot. If you havent already considered doing improv or acting in a play... Well lets just say youd be an asset to any production! I dont even do that stuff and I can still tell...You can put it out there and use inflection, as well as intellagently using whats around you on the fly, and with confidence. Dont think thats something smaller than it is, either, for instance if more people saw this here, theyd probably consider you for voice acting in their games.Something
to consider unless you do that already, in which case, your on the right track.

My argument was not at all concerned with the morality of the issue, but rather the cause and effect of regulations.Im not sure what the legal framework is where you are, but I would say here in Ontario, there is some regulation of sorts, in addition to the insentive system I described above.I know not what you speak of when you mention this amorphus god of probability.indeed it always amuses me that those who most tout the virtues of free enterprise and competition are those who bennifit from the system most, and utterly forget about everyone else.Have you ever noticed theres actually a significant number of working class people who tout the virtue of free enterprize and competition? Either way, that statement is generally true about any school of thought; Those who benefit from it the most are the ones who most tout its virtue.

I think Ive remarked before on your admirable tenacity and pragmatism, so Im going to let this go before the discussion ends up where it started again. Basically, the issue is that you want the benefits without the drawbacks of an upgrade cycle. I think its pretty clear that you cant have that, with the current situation anyway. Certainly nothing will change if you stay where you are. So, all that really remains is to decide whether or not you can manage where you are now. Again, your simple pragmatic attitude is unarguable; if you cant move forward, staying put is the single, simplest thing you can do. On the other hand, security! I think both CX2 and I seem to be in agreement that security is something we cant compromise, and I still t
hink youre putting yourself into needless danger, but if youve got it all worked out, then thats that. Can I call you Farmer Dark from now on?

All I can say is: be careful, dont trust anything, and make sure you dont lose anything sensitive if the bottom falls out of the world. Id add to that For Gods sake stop using IE but youve already said. The real benefits of upgrading are stability, security, reliability, compatibility with newer hardware standards, etc.It is folly to say that you dont see any reasons to upgrade, when all the real reasons you should upgrade provide no benefit to you because they dont change the way you use your computer. Of course some reasons provide benefits; theyre simply not immediately visible benefits. Obviously, you do want to upgrade, just not for all the shiny crap youre foisted. As I said above, the problem with catering to peoples needs when those needs are Only upgrade me when my computer breaks is that MS wouldnt ever sell anything. So you want a secure Windows version that works, but
arent willing to pay for it. Unless MS changes to a subscription model where youre paying for software maintenance, this hardly seems set to change. In the mean time, there are benefits which you can receive, but only with the heavy price of change. You are a farmer in the sense that you can live without modern conveniences. Obviously I was joking, but in effect your justification for staying where you are is that the worst that can happen to your primary machine wouldnt shake you at all. Thats pretty amazing, actually. What I wouldnt give to lead such a simple computing life! Id get started on that XP machine purchase ASAP if youre intent on doing the hardware preservation thing; even finding Windows 7 is getting harder and harder. As for a VM, Im sure we can help you with those, and theres no shortage of software to m
ake Win7/8/8.1 more XP-like, notably Classic Shell. Really, I think youll be fine in the end. Plus youll get to use modern websites.Oh, but that doesnt count because evil MickeySoft _made_ websites abandon support for their crappy old browser. Fair point then, but its a useful benefit all the same.

Well if this machine did! break tomorrow everything is backed up on an external hd under my bed, so no foul. Thats why losing my last xp machine in 2008 wasnt a problem, and the lack of website compatibility is about the only major issue I see in the future. Indeed, I wonder what these supposed modern conveniences I am doing without that you speak of actually are.it is not that I am not bothered about security etc, its just that I dont see that as a reason to abandon everything I have as microsoft wants and get nothing else in returnn but the irritation of a less convenient interface to work around. As to poor little microsoft not making money, I have to disagree with you on that one. Microsoft became the richest company in the world and remained so for over 10 years selling Xp. Heck as I said I would not be above paying for a stable xp with backwards compatibility if it did what I wanted. This is why I see the so called upgrades and obso

hi dark, i did suggest this before, and agree with you there, that there should be a level cap. perhaps to level 3 or so. meening, its hard coaded in to swamp that, once u start it up off line, u can do every thing u can now. except chat, obviously, since u not connected, but playing is not restricted, right until u hit level 3, then it just stops and says if u wish to play further, u can check it out online, and it mite even offer to open the caldobsky website. smile. this would be a very nice teezer for aprones game, in fact i also, suggested that, speed should not be limmited, or rather maybe limmited to fifty percent, increase, as if you had 20 points in it, tto give the demmo player an idea how it wil be like. so that your character can moove fast. if need be. that wil give people a good idea what to expect.

Re: I'm blind and want to develop a very complex game

Python requires indentation. It seems to be a growing trend. The tools like Pybrace break horribly as soon as you try to do anything marginally complex. You should be indenting, always. In any language. It prevents so many problems with brace matching and keeps sighted people from laughing at you. In addition, most screen readers do a really good job with it nowadays. Im also against making the indentation conform to your scheme; should you ever enter the real world of programming with others, this is a very very bad habit to have.Python isnt a bad choice in terms of finding tutorials. Googling Python Game Programming will bring up more things than you could ever read through. I dont have a specific one Im afraid-its been too long since Ive needed anything at this level of programming.C and C++ arent good choices. C doesnt have a lot of modern features and
C++ is very, very complicated. You can use C++, but you need to learn how to use it first-in the case of C++ you have to add knowing which features of the language you shouldnt mix together to the list of things to know. Most languages dont have that problem, but C++ is 30 years of how do we abstract this without making it slower? and the result is something wherein everyone uses only part of the language, but everyone uses a different part. You can technically do object oriented programming in C, actually, but its very definitely not for the faint of heart and very definitely not fun (also you have to know some obscure things about structs). That said, C++ probably beats everything for finding game programming info, simply because the sighted programmers working on the very biggest 3D titles for consoles dont have a choice.Id not suggest making a game in Java; I dont like the language but its well e
nough if thats your cup of tea (I find that its philosophy of knowing better than the programmer is restrictive). The real problem with Java or any of the JVM languages is that you need the JVM, which is a 200 MB or so package that not all of us have. That said, new programmers love it and universities loved it about 5 years ago (they all seem to be moving off it now), so you can find lots and lots of info along these lines. You have two choices. One is to leave BGT for one of the mainstream languages. If you do so, which language you pick determines which language you put next to game programming tutorials in your Google searches. Your other option is to port back to BGT, in which case it doesnt really matter because youre in it for figuring out how games look and have to translate all the concepts anyway. Leaving BGT adds a lot of up-front work but is probably something youll do eventually, especially if you want to
make something like a first-person shooter. The only advantage to BGT that I see is that you can learn programing by learning game programming, something which is harder elsewhere. Also, as came up in anotheer thread, it appears having scripting is difficult in BGT; you have to roll your own language as far as I know.

Re: Swamp, zombie FPS by Aprone

Hi Aprone,Ive been thinking about some of the bugs people are experiencing, particularly around inventories. Ive noticed that when you change maps various elements of your character are reset. This includes changing maps as you move around the game and when you are transferred to mission maps and back to the safe zone. These resets include inventories not loading and the /no (h/z) choices reverting to yes. Could the way the game handles map transfers and log ins be the problem and not inventory code? I ask this particularly now that there are more missions (CTF, LMS and defender) where you are given new inventories and your old one is saved by the game and returned to you later.Another option could be the /no human and zombie commands. As I said, I notice that these revert to being on sometimes when you come back from missions or transfer between maps. Could the way the game handles these commands be affecting other map transfer/loading code?<
/p>Moving on to requests, please, please, please lower the cool down between weapon switches. Its causing all kind of needless deaths and problems and just frustrating players. Can this be taken into consideration and at least speeded up a bit?Id also like to request options for one or two more favourite weapon keys. There are so many fun, interesting and useful weapons in the game now that it would encourage people to use more of them if they could switch to them quickly rather than having to cycle through to so many of them. Having said that, please dont remove weapons because the variety is one of the most important things for me.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

@Simber, breakout style games are really popular, but as far as I know there arent that many around that are accessible, which is odd sinse its a style of game that could be done easily in audio. Rebound from Gamevial is about the best example, and that does have power ups like bat stretchers, multiple balls and extra lives, and on later levels even power downs like bat shrinkers and killers that kill you if you pick them up (avoiding grabbing those, especially with a stretched bat can be quite tricky).Rebound is unfortunately the only serious example of a Breakout game in audio I can think of, sinse as I said Ken Downnys wrecking ball always seemed a bit chaotic to me. It actually seems odd there arent more, sinse the bat and ball mechanics arent really that more difficult in audio than something like Jims Pong or Philips old showdown game, you just need sounds for when your ball hits the different bricks, and possibly some sort of
scan to tell you roughly where the remaining bricks are once youve destroyed a few, though this might not be necessary (rebound gets on fine without it). There is also Yukios Laser breakout, but that is more a strange turn based battle version, and other than breaking bricks doesnt really have much to do with the original game at all, though it is fun if you like turn based battles.@Phil, I can imagine a similar space invaders game to breakout with those mechanics. Im not saying the game isnt bad, as I said I enjoyed playing it, especially the fast reactions and I can definitely see the point of one switch gameplay, I just personally am not convinced it accurately reflects the original breakout concept sinse a key part of that is the bat and ball mechanics. Imagine if someone created a Packman audiogame, where instead of running around the mazes the player had to continually hit the space bar to move along in one direction, hit up arr
ow to grab dots when they heard the sound and then stop when they heard a ghost sound. The game may or may not be a good game, may have eating dots and getting killed by ghosts, but missing the need to navigate the maze sort of misses a major element of what made Packman Packman. Pcs Breakout would be an option, but Id still personally prefer it had a name that only slightly related to breakout as I said.I do admit though, I am possibly more of a stickler for this sinse I do have quite fond memories of the original breakout game from the 80s, so to me breakout without the bouncing ball sort of misses the point, likely people who are less serious about accuracy wouldnt have this niggle.

Ironically that debate finished with them having to offer me the thing for free so they could upgrade the area cables sinse I refused to pay extra for something I was currently happy with, (and I didnt mind accepting the upgrade in that case as I didnt lose anything).it is not that I am not bothered about security etc, its just that I dont see that as a reason to abandon everything I have as microsoft wants and get nothing else in returnn but the irritation of a less convenient interface to work around. As to poor little microsoft not making money, I have to disagree with you on that one. Microsoft became the richest company in the worl

This is why I see the so called upgrades and obsolescence of everything that went before as greed, pure and simple, particularly with how Ms actively obsolete even post xp windows in such a short time and expect people to buy more machines under threat of the security bogey man (look at Vista and 7).

I occasionally browse the other types of genres featured on the website linked above, but the technological stories are my favorite. Perhaps its because if Im lucky, a story that might center around a cursed audio/video file of sorts may have some sort of c

I also enjoy reading stories centered around lost episodes of certain television shows or edited versions of movies. Re: old pcs doss games anyone having these still?

Going through all those old demos just reminded me how many less than optimal things had to happen for us to have audio games back in those days. You had to select from a few bundled sound players, because DOS had no native support for playing sounds, imagine that in todays world! If I recall correctly, while most sounds were playing, the game could do absolutely nothing whatsoever, simply because another program had full control of the computer in order to play the sound. This, of course, eliminated loads of possibilities. Any sound that had to be played interactively during game play had to be PC speaker beeps. All the sounds were low-quality by todays standards, to accommodate disk sizes and modem speeds of the time. I seem to recall that some of the later games like Trek did have internal sound playback, which made for a much more realistic gaming experience.Of course as soon as developers started switching to Windows, many of these problems went away, and y
ou bet developers took advantage of that. One of the first Windows games I played was an early concept demo of what would eventually become Shades of Doom, and as I recall, nothing available at that time could touch it as far as gameplay and complexity.

Also, as came up in another thread, it appears having scripting is difficult in BGT; you have to roll your own language as far as I know.

Hi.Please let me know what you have regarding to Sound RTS stuff, and then Ill consider if it would be worth it to make an official place for Sound RTS stuff.Dan: You have to place the soundpack in the mods folder in the user folder in Sound RTS. Go into the start menu, find the sound RTS folder, and click on the user folder. Then, open the .ini file in the root of the folder, and on the mod line after the = sign, you just have to add: supersoundpack and save the file and the sound pack is activated.

Hi.Such campaign has been suggested many times before, but it doesnt seems like anyone is going to make it.It would be kind of fun to work on such campaign, and it should be pretty simple to do. This would be much simpler to make than the campaign and map I was working on long time ago, but I was forced to give up because of some annoying bugs in the campaign script which killed the idea behind the whole project. It was so sad, and I didnt liked to just give up on this... But I think such campaign which simulates the online experience would be easy to make. I might at leased give it a try. Making a campaign is much easier than making maps. Please reply with your comments if you would like to see such a campaign.

Re: Modern PCS breakout rewrite

@Pitermach, sounds nice, both the talking dos emulator and the convertions. As well as Phils games, there are a number of other great dos titles kicking around, games like fallthru and drone, not to mention some more modern, console window efforts like world of legends and eamon deluxe, though my only concern is, if the system is using a dos screen reader voice, how does it sound? I know a lot of those old dos voices were pretty robotic by modern standards and that would be a shame for such a richly described game as fallthru. Getting back to breakout any thoughts on both your company/developer name, or on perhaps changing the breakout game as I said, plus how about stats?@Phil, I did get how the sounds work, but I found that I wasnt always absolutely certain when I missed or which column I hit, which is why some tracking stats would be nice, to get an idea of how I was performing and thus improve my playing style. As to the game, one sw
itch control is no bad thing it is true, my one issue is that as I said sinse the bat and ball were so integral to the original breakout, remove them and you have a different game which is why I wondered if it needs a name change. Also, I have to beg to differ on the not possible in audio for the bat and bouncing ball, although Gamevials Rebound is the only really successful example I know (ken downys wrecking ball had possibilities but was a little too chaotic with its huge number of keyboard keys and complex bat control).

Not in the long run anyway.Plus, microsoft have stopped giving updates to xp users, havent they? Think about that, no updates for your system, no fixes to x y and z bugs and things, dont you se why updateing might be a good idea?I can understand if you dont have the money, I know windows costs quite a bit, but saving up wo

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

Well I am hoping that an actual practical reason to update will turn up in the next ten years, ie, something that improves what I cam do, not just replacing 20 years worth of compatibility with a shiny new interface and mythical security fixes. Indeed, what I might end up doing at some point is buying a reconditioned xp machine, keeping it offline entirely and just using it for all the stuff xp does, assuming an actual new machine has some real bennifits which Ive yet to see. @Sebby, you say all the bennifits of an update cycle with none of the drawbacks but can you describe these bennifits without using some tecky wecky jargon the words more, better or other superlatives? what do they actually do! Other than internet obsolescence and running screen reader friendly versions of windows games (accessible versions of which exist elsewhere anyway), Ive really not heard of anything, which is why I question the validity of thes
e so called upgrades.I wouldnt describe myself as a farmer sinse producing stuff on a farm is far too hard work and your implication is that I would be totally unwilling to upgrade which is not the case, I just have a pragmatic attitude to technology. NEver mind how it works, what does it do for me! I think if microsoft and possibly Apple had a similar attitude rather than saying how best to make more money and bugger peoples actual needs wed have a much better time of it. Then again, thats capitalism for you.

I noticed there were some games missing from the list of games you could provide E.G. Cops, Shoot, etc.Imho, eventually the older DOS versions of games that already exist on Windows should nevertheless be made available where it is legal to do so, so people who remember those specific versions can play them again, assuming some sort of emulation is possible. Also, imho the demos should be preserved as well. Thats no problem, I have a ton of them, and so does anyone who has an older K1000 CD.

Pitermach,The original PCS Breakout used 8 bit 22k sound files. Some modern sound cards will not play 8 bit sounds.I use Gold Wave for converting them to 16 bit. I also try to find the original sounds such as the Breakout theme song which is a 16 second edited version of the Seinfeld TV show theme. In the game we played bo1000.wav that had a voice over saying the game credits, and bot.wav at the end with out the voice-over. I think because of the difference in game play we calle it PCS Breakout rather than just Breakout but most people were happy to play the game even with the different game mechanics.Later on we developed pcs space invaders which required you to move left and right and shoot the moving invaders, an action just like the one in the original Breakout.

Re: Inspiration or Objectification

Perhaps that class opinion thing is more common in the states Theo, sinse I know in America for some reason there is a lot of anti government and anti centralization sentimentt. Less so in the Uk, one reason why the labour party has fallen down so much in recent elections due to their crazy privatization and sell outs to larger foreign companies of centralized services in Britain. The reason I mention the fact that those who bennifit from a system are those who tout its virtues, is frequently I find so called universal truths, especially the ones progressing from a so called evolutionary standpoint, are always put forward by those who most bennifit. Nobody says its the survival of the fittest but Im unfit to survive, well actually nobody accept Nietzsche, and he still thought his own philosophy and thinking was fittest to dominate he just was aware of his own physical frailty.Ive been thinking about this question recently beca
use it seems so much in moral, political and even social and economic thought evolution is given as this universal, catch all explanation by those in power to insure the maintenance of their power, a sort of semi mystical teleology which serves almost as God did in previous centuries things are like this because of evolution! this isnt to say evolution doesnt exist, only that evolution is a fairly symple process merely stating that in any situation those individuals of a species best suited to survive and reproduce in their environment will do so, end of story. it doesnt imply The strongest will survive or the weak must be routed out or competition is natural, indeed according to one paper I read by a chap called Dicky empathy and cooperation were the only practical things humans have over other species in a purely biological sense.I am thus rather suspicious of this strangely functional
ist credo, in both economic and social terms sinse it seems more often than not extremely self serving under a borrowed guise of scientific authority, I wonder how much the people in China working 18 hours a day for around 10 pence which is just enough for a subsistance level of life believe in the virtues of competition Bottom line, all this Free market competition is natural which often serves to chissle disabled people out of jobs seems to be more often than not a load of self interested balls! and in discussing disability or indeed any other condition we should try to consider what is right! not falls in with some sort of false evolutionary ethic.
