Re: Pfizer or Oxford?

Who said anything about antivaccine? I think vaccine theory is based on sound principles. I am against rushing to get experimental genetic modification, at least until more studies have been done on the long-term effects. I choose not to get flu shots because the strain they choose is based on their predictions and they consider 30 percent efficacy a good year, last year was the first time in seventeen years that I got the flu, the previous time was several weeks after I was forced to get a flu shot. Also, if you take into account the fact that if you get the vaccine, you're not immune, and you can still transmit, what is the net gain? From the way I view it, if 0 means you're not immune and 1 means you're immune, you can vaccinate all day long, and add 0 to the whole world's population and you're never going to add up to 1.

Re: Pfizer or Oxford?

Several points. I don't think the vaccine repayment fund will repay people without proof the vaccine was to blame, but you're right, allergies, weird situations do crop up, and as I said the numbers are small, but there are reported cases. On the other hand, if you're not counting cases of anyone who has any conditions or risk factors, then you have to look at the lethality of covid for that group of people, and it's about as bad as the flu in a bad year. The last numbers I heard for the CFR rate were 99.7 survivability for people under 65.You say don't be afraid of the vaccine, I'm more concerned about the long-term effects of humanity messing with genetics trying to get something out in a hurry than I am about a virus which I have about as much chance getting over as I do the flu. That being said, I think that everyone should do what makes them most comfortable so long as they're not forcing others to do the same. I'm surprised enough already that people put up with a three week shutdown to flatten the curve for a year now. I'd rather die from covid than avoid living in a state of perpetual fear until politicians and medical people funded by those politicians say it's okay.

I disagree. I have never had trouble discerning pitch on timpani. It's true sometimes rapid tuning isn't as accurate as it could be, but there are gauges along the side which people can use to tune quickly, assuming they're aligned properly of course.Notes on different octaves aren't the same note either, just saying.

Re: Accessible D 5E Character Creator

You know, you're right. Good catch. I wonder where it got screwed up. This was my first attempt running 5e, and the focus was on combat balance. I'm primarily a 3.5 dm, and when we played, we jumped 3 levels after every session to get experience at each tier of play. I probably skipped a prof bonus jump once, and I know for sure they got a boon of a wish spell which raised the dex. I probably just skipped the skills to save time updating since it happened right before the last adventure. I'll fix that in the post.

Re: audio experiment - how do you perceive this?

Interesting. SpoilershereSo, the range of a typical set of four timpani is written realistically between about second octave D and third octave g. Below that the overtones just make it too wet, and above that it just sounds dead. You can, of course have larger sets of timpani to create larger ranges, but a set of four is pretty standard. The timpani strike is in the sweet spot of the third drum from the bottom which is typically tuned comfortably from a-flat two to e-flat three, which means it is the second file. since the first file is playing on octave two, and the second is playing on octave three.

That is definitely usable, and if it works for you great! The thing with 5e though, is that the ability score used for skills is not always the same. For instance, in the phb they give the example of swimming for several miles. Normally athletics (strength) is the check, but in this case the dm could call for an athletics (constitution) since it's an endurance based situation. Once you know the skills and their most common ability score, it really cleans up the sheet to just remove that list, which is why I kept proficiencies and expertese in two places. Additionally, you'd need to add in a spot for tools, musical instruments, etc. So, for example, the 20th level rogue for my 5e test campaign looks like this.Name: Jesse ProudfootRace: HalflingSize: smallAlignment: Chaotic goodlevel/Class/archetype: 20 Rogue (mastermind)Gold: 1291STR: 8/8 -1Dex: 20/20 +5Con: 14/14 +2INT: 15/15 +2WIS: 16/16 +3Cha: 16/16 +3Proficiency bonus: +6Initiative: +5HP: 142/142 (20d8+40) HD rolled: 0Armor class: 17 (5 dex, +2 +1 studded leather armor)Speed: 25 feetEffects:Saving throws: Dex: +11, Int: +8, Wis: +9Death saving throws: 0 made | 0 failedSenses: Passive Perception: 13Proficiencies:quick Skills: Acrobatics, deception, investigation, performance, slight of hand, stelthEquipment: Light armor, Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswordsToolsets: Thieves tools, Disguise kit, forgery kit 3 dragon ante (dice)Expertese: Acrobatics, Deception, disguise kit, slight of hand, stealthLanguages: Common, HalflingSkills: Most common ability score; proficient, totalAnimal Handling: Wis; +3Arcana: Int; +2Athletics: Str; +-1Acrobatics: Dex; +15Deception: Cha; +13History: Int; +2Insight: wis; +3Intimidation: Cha; +2Investigation: Int; +8Medicine: Wis; +3Nature: Int; +2Perception: wis; +3Performance: Cha; +9Persuasion: Cha; +3Religion: int; +2Sleight of Hand: dex; +15Stealth: Dex; +15Survival: Wis; +3Personality:Traits:1: Flattery is my MO, think car salesman.2: I have multiple holy symbols for multiple situations.Ideal:1: Friendship is what is most important to me.Bond:1: I kind of well, let's just say Majistrate Dailynth in Jeck's crossing is not happy with me. Re: preferred cane techniques?

If I'm just going somewhere I know pretty well, I use the old diagonal technique. Holding my cane in my right hand, it's diagonally out in front the tip is out in front of my left foot. If I'm going somewhere I don't know, I use the sweep technique. If it's crowded I use the touch technique because it lets people know I'm coming through. From what I'm told O and M instructors nowadays teach holding the cane slightly offside so you don't jab yourself. That hurts. I like ambutech rolling tips, and I walk fast, so longer canes are more appropriate for me.I did use a large ball tip for a while in college when I did a lot of marching band stuff that required me to cut across grass a lot.

Re: Tips for safely walking on ice?

Walk through the grass. It can still be slippery, but the ice builds up on the cement and especially on hills it can be very slick. The best advice I have is to test each step before putting your weight on it. Go slow, use your garbage cans as extra support if you need to. The straight up and straight down approach works, but that takes practice. The shuffle, if you go slow, and are able to keep all your weight off of one foot, should be okay if you slide just take that foot and put it back, or let it slide until you find a less slippery section.Lots of people fall, and a hypermobile joint is risky. Maybe let someone else take out the garbage?

Re: how much does blindness effect employment

20, That is not true. I know of a blind guy who worked for the national park service, and I know several who have worked for the U.S. federal government.16, in order to get SSDI, you need five years work experience. Even then, I just managed to get on it and my check is under $300. Half of which they are trying to take for medical insurance even though I'm on my wife's plan and told them no multiple times. On SSI you can't have more than $2000 in assets, so it doesn't pay to get off of it or save if you are not going to make more than that.I do not want a job in the blind sector because I feel like once you're stuck working for a group who only hires blind people or is geared toward the blind, you are more or less stuck there. The best work is probably freelance, but it takes a lot of dedication and marketing skills, the latter of which I seriously lack, to get enough exposure. Even with my job now, I don't wake up in the morning excited to go to work. I did when I was student teaching. I enjoy my job sometimes, but I come home aching if it is a long day. Then there are the days where my coworkers schedule me clients last minute, which I absolutely loathe, or the client is a no-call, no-sho, which means I paid round-trip Uber faires for nothing, or it's a grupon which means I get paid $5 for two hours of work.Actually, ever since the pandemic started, I have seriously been entertaining the idea of professionally running D campaigns. I have been being a dm so much already, I figured it would be doable, and more people have time on their hands. I've spent the last six months or so playtesting several groups and checking out different tools that I just need to get over a fear of success and start doing it.

Re: how much does blindness effect employment

It sucks. Some people have had success getting into programming, and if that is your thing, great. I had to jump through extra hoops in college to get my bachelor's in education, and I spent several years after graduation looking for a job in that field, trying both mentioning blindness in the cover letter and not mentioning it until the interview. I had interviews, that was not the issue. All of them ended with either no callback afterwords, or they hired another candidate with more experience.Keep in mind also that this was right in the middle of the recession when paying a new teacher was much cheaper than paying someone with fifteen years experience. So, I had to switch my mind set from, "What can I reasonably accomplish and do as well as a sighted person," to, "What can sighted people think blind people can reasonably accomplish as well or better than they can do?" I came up with three fields.Lawyer, computer programmer, and massage therapist. I did not want to go back to school for a law degree, I needed money then. I did not want to go into programming because, while I enjoy dabbling in small doses, if I made a career out of it, I'd be bored out of my mind. So, I found a trade school where I could get a massage degree in ten months, got that, and now, I have to deal with being a male massage therapist which has its own problems, and I made about $6000 in 2019..Final thoughts, it blows. If you go get a masters in socialwork or psychology, something if you can get past the catch 22 of ensurance not paying you without a permanent license, and so nobody will hire you and the state, who will hire you with a temp license is not hiring and will not hire for the next few years, you might have it made.Final thoughts, for real this time.I've come to the conclusion that people who are blind and land good jobs are skilled, but also lucky, and while volunteering is nice and can help, I have a problem with giving away my services without a guarantee of payment, especially when I have bills to pay, I can't be giving away my time for free.

Also, highhat rolls and cymbal rolls in general are, I'll not say always, but probably 99.99 percent of the time technically done as a time dependent roll. Since the stick doesn't get much rebound on a metal surface, you can at most get two or three bounces per stick before it tapers off and the others just sound weak. Most realistically, you are best doing 32nd notes or 16th note triplets in most cases.

Re: frustrated with blindness (read post if you want context)

This is just my opinion, but I feel like UEB was pushed on us by sighted braille readers because learning grade 2 contracted and nemeth is too difficult to keep straight if they transition from one to the other. I guess, context is becoming a foreign concept. Grade 2 rocks, and while I can read UEB, I can't stand it and, without some compelling reasons why it is better, ever endorse it as something worth teaching as a primary method of braille. As far as being blindfolded, if you play goal ball or beep-baseball, you will also be blindfolded and have to function. I know totals who can't navigate their own houses without getting lost, and I know partials who can function perfectly fine without sight. Even still, one thing I think that is overlooked in the argument about neuroplasticity, is that the more you exercise the brain in making new connections, the longer neuroplasticity remains flexible. No training center is ever going to be long enough to completely irreversibly restructure the brain, and by the nature of learning new skills will increase the adaptability once the blindfold is removed.I have relatively useful light perception, I can see different shades of contrast, but no color, so for instance I can see the difference between sidewalks and grass, or sidewalks and the street, although grass and the street look the same to me. I also function perfectly fine with a blindfold. What I can't do very well is honestly wearing a mask, sunglasses, or a hat. They create both a shadow makes it constantly look like I'm about to run into something, and they change the way I hear things in my surroundings.I do think access has gone down over the last fifteen years or so. With my first guidedog, throughout her working life I got denied twice. With my current guidedog, I get denied about once a month or so. Then with the prevalence of most electronics moving to touch screens, money in the U.s. still is not accessible despite several rulings by the supreme court, Then with jobs being generally harder for us to get and much less be competitive with a sighted counterpart, blindness does suck especially once you have bills and a mortgage.

I love food, water, and education. The problem is, who's food, water and education am I getting? The movement to go organic, grass fed, and free-range is really taking off here in the U.S, and if it is all provided by the state, who knows what they are putting in it. I'm looking at you Monsanto.Regarding water, well, the same premise goes. What are they putting in the water? Such as this articleAnd of course, education. who is teaching me what? Even now, there is a large argument this election about school choice. One side claims that competition with the public school system will provide a better learning environment for everyone. The other wants the public school system to be the only way to educate students. I know from having a degree in education that the curriculums are tightly controlled already at the state and federal levels, propaganda anyone? Also, assessing via standardized tests. Not every student is the same, not every school is the same, and why they try to make everyone a cookie cutter achiever is beyond me. Still, once you tie a school's or a teacher's success to that one multiple choice test, they of course, teach you to test, and not really anything useful. IN my opinion, they should teach you to read, write, do basic algebra and geometry, and life skills, like changing a tire or money management. Concurrently, they should be teaching you the skills to succeed at self-education. Then let you explore your interests. Why even high school juniors or seniors are required to take so many courses is beyond me, much less general education courses in colleges. I think that if emphasis was put on the core skills one needs to succeed, and given the tools to help them learn, they should be able to take classes which align with their interests, which, of course, may change over time.Interesting note, this article gives an example of a modern reading list verses one from a school from the 1900's.In essence, in theory, provided the people running the thing have the best interests in mind of the population as a whole, great, but sadly, human nature is both greedy for power, and resistant to change, and once someone has more power over someone else, they are reluctant to give it up.

Well, look at those bike and scooter rentals out on the west coast of the U.S. Since they are not owned by the renters, they are left places, run over, left on sidewalks, stolen, etc. Also, how many people do you know who go to hotels, and leave them a mess, because, "the cleaning service will take care of that." Hell, how many people had messy rooms growing up until you got your own place and realized how much of a slob you were, and realized that yes, it is good to keep your living space clean? It's the same argument about private ownership that post 13 laid out so eloquently. In a world where the means of production and means of transportation can be given to the individual, then maybe, but at that point you're talking Star Treck society.Capitalism has it's problems, and it would be nice to see more consideration of the average worker, but humans thrive on competition. Innovation is driven by capitalist societies. Fair markets should, in theory, drive prices down.To answer the op's original point though, no I disagree with your premise. Yes, countries have the right to exist and be self-governing. I do not believe they need to be wealthy before they become democratic. The united States sure wasn't wealthy when it started. Also to be clear, the United states is a Constitutional Republic, but it is governed along the idea that the government rules by the will of the people through their elected representatives.Where I think op is backwards is you can't have an oppressed population and also have a thriving economy. The more able the individual is to choose their own destiny, the more prosperous the country as a whole will be.

Dark, The Seanchan empire has existed, not since the breaking, but for I think at least a couple thousand years since Ardur Pendragon conquered. Also, we never learn about the islands of the seafolk or Shar, and the peoples across the waste, much beyond glimpses here and there, and what we do know is more rumor than fact. We don't even know how much more the world is since we never circumnavigate it.For all intents and purposes we mostly focus on the western part of one continent, and that part we get to know a lot.One thing I like is also that the forsaken aren't all the strongest from their time, although some are. Some are just teachers or scholars, or even just musicians and their motivations were more than just, "I want power for the sake of power."

Geography is pretty solidly explained throughout the books, at least so far as the Aiel wastes to the ocean. Beyond that you only know what the characters know or guess, and some or all of that might be wrong. What Dark means is that the age of Legends is just that, legends. Fragments survived, and people are always looking for a more thorough understanding of that time. Also, stories are exaggerated or the names change over time. Even then, there are things older than the Age of Legends which are merely hinted at or only partially understood. That's what makes the Wheel of Time world so complete in my opinion, it feels like there is too much to ever fully know, and it gives it a sense that it is bigger in scope than the here and now.

Re: The wheel of time and other fantasy books

Dark pretty much nailed Jordan's books. Great books, but books six through ten are definitely slow. Still, I enjoyed them thoroughly, and I intend to reread them again soon. Another series I particularly enjoyed is the Deverry series by Katharine Kerr. It is based on the idea that people constantly evolve through multiple lifetimes, and that their obligations to others in one life can be transferred to the next.  all while people are moving toward some higher harmonic of themselves. It also is loosely based on Welsh history and mythology. The book starts off following four main characters who all got themselves Karmicly linked through some bad choices, mistakes, and a vow, and through the series you see people get their threads woven in and out of these character's lives as they work to straighten themselves out.The magic system is interesting, it is a slightly embellished form of western mysticism, and while nobody is throwing fireballs or whirling gates of death, it is not so subtle that it could be mistaken for luck either.

Re: is there a accessible tool to detect key and scale of a song?

17, just from a first glance, that piece is in a minor key, specifically melodic minor, but it uses a lot of accidentals.Note: Just because you're in a key, doesn't mean you're tied to only the notes in that scale. My college jazz professor once said, "In jazz, you're always only a halfstep away from a right note," meaning that no matter what note you end up playing, you can lead into the right note from there and it works. The way you can tell is first, where is the fundamental note. IN 17's case, it is A-flat, and it is consistently a-flat through the whole song. The next is the dominant note, which is a perfect fourth, or five half-steps below the fundamental. In this case it is e-flat. The next step is is it using a major or minor third. IN this case it's almost always minor, so that narrows it down to a minor scale or a couple of modes. After we figure the third, we look at the leading tone, the note before the route note. This is a little tricky in this piece because they use both g natural and g-flat, indicating most likely melodic minor. The superdominant note also changes between f natural and f-flat, so again indications of melodic minor.Odds are, unless the composer is trying to be cute for some reason, the easiest notation then is a-flat minor, but it could be g-flat dorian mode if they really wanted it to be, and just used the accidentals where needed.

Practice. Lots and lots of practice. Not everyone has perfect pitch though either, so learn how to identify intervals, then if you have a tuning fork you can always tell what note is being played. Basic theory, chords, scales, common chord progressions, and tempos are important to know too.

Regarding your drumming question. there are plenty of good cymbals out there, but you really need to hear the one you are buying because no two cymbals are the same, even from the same manufacturer. Also, what you hear from studio recordings is not what you will hear live, and what you hear sitting behind the kit is not what your audience will hear.Me personally, I prefer drier sounding cymbals with a clean bell sound. It makes for good articulation and doesn't sound washy when you are playing something intricate or fast, but I couldn't tell you what brand I have I don't remember. I just go and play a bunch until I find one with the sound I am looking for.

Re: I really don’t understand time signature

Time signatures are basically fractions.4/4 is the easiest and most common time signature in western music. The first number represents how many beats per measure, and the second is what type of note is a beat. So, 4/4 has four beats per measure, and a it is a quarternote per beat. You could have a time signature of 4/2 which would be four beats per measure and a halfnote gets the beat.2/4 is two beats per measure and a quarternote gets the beat. 3/4 is three beats per measure and a quarternote gets the beat. One thing to remember, in 2/4 a halfnote is a whole measure, and in 3/4 a dotted halfnote is a whole measure and are often written as such.Likewise in 6/8, where there are six beats per measure and an eighth note gets the beat, it is also a dotted halfnote.then you get things like 3/8, 5/4, 7/8 9/8, and 12/8. Those are probably the most common alternative time signatures you will come across. They follow the same rules, so the first number is how many beats per measure and the second number is what type of note gets the beat. That's it in a nutshell, you probably don't need to know simple, complex or asymmetrical meter.Oh, two other terms you should know.Common time is just 4/4. Cut time, is 4/4 notation, but when it's played it sounds more like 2/4. Many marches are written in cut time.

Re: I need some advice with school.

In large part, I never had trouble fitting in throughout school. I was in public schools my entire life, and didn't really notice things go downhill until college, and even that was mostly my fault for not participating as much as I probably should have.My suggestions are to first, read your cues. If it's not someone you are close to, if they ask you how your day is, they expect you to say it is fine. If you tell them your problems a lot of them will either tune out or think you are whining. If  you do want to complain, make it relatable, things like, "That homework in English was a pain in the ass; I hate Hamlet," rather than, "Can you believe my screen reader froze again today? I was just trying to make eloquence sing during class."Second, join a club, or extracarricular. You will meet people with similar interests, and have more time to get to know them, and similarly, they will have more time to get to know you. It is also difficult in a smaller school because a lot of them will have grown up together so relationships are already established, but someone will be curious enough hopefully to take the time to get to know you.Third, if you are having an issue in a class because of accessibility, talk to the teacher before or after class, and don't take time out of class unless it is urgent.Fourth, like others have said, this too will pass, and in the grand scheme of things, school while school is an excellent place to make friends, college, or work is just more of the same. Finally, It has been my experience that women are, in most cases, friendlier and more willing to approach someone. Most of my friends in school who I still keep up with today after graduating high school in 2004, and college in 2010, are female. A couple of whom I have known since I was very young. TBH I don't really keep up with any of the blind people I knew in school.Don't hide your blindness, but don't make that all you are. For instance, in high school, I never thought of myself as the blind student. I was a percussionist in the top band and co-section leader my senior year. I was an honors and AP student. I was the only junior in my class to get A's both semesters of my physics class. I had the most amazing girlfriend the latter half of my junior and all of my senior year. Being blind was just not a big part of my identity, which is sad, because the older I am getting, the larger of an issue it has become to me.

Re: what can i do to improve my grades

The hardest part for me when writing was getting started. Once I get past my introduction, I do just fine. Sometimes, I even will write the rest of my paper then write the introduction if it is being particularily stubborn.A couple suggestions if that doesn't work for you are:1: Set yourself a small goal, say 100 words. Write 100 words then you can do something else. Often times, this will help break through that block.2: Have a designated work area. Only do schoolwork in this area, and nothing else. This will get your mind into the habit of switching gears.3: Have a study partner. One thing that I like is to have someone doing the same thing or who knows about the topic, and bounce ideas off of them.Dark's idea about reading biased opinions and using that to formulate your own thoughts on the subject is a good method too.

Back when I was ten, I got my first Braille 'n Speak with a spellchecker. I was on my way to school and I decided to read the spell.dic file, so I opened it, hit the l chord, and then the er chord to read all. Well, it did not like that and it crashed so hard that we had to send it in for repairs. Mind you I was knowledgeable enough about them to fix ninety-five percent of issues on my own by then.

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

Sadly, most of us end up trailblazing at whatever university we end up at. The biggest problem, which was touched upon briefly, is that most of the time, we don't know something will be challenging until we're in that class or half way through it, this makes getting timely responses on accessibility really difficult, because profs and disability services seem to think that we have all the answers. My response is, how can we have all the answers when we have no idea what is involved? My best suggestion is once you find out who's teaching your classes next semester, go meet with them, and discuss the needs of the class and your needs. Also, talk to your adviser about designing your own major, if needs be, and do self-study when things are challenging.

Re: astral projection can a blind person do it?

Just because we don't have the science now to explain it does not mean it is not explainable. Multidimensional math does exist, and right now a lot of it is theoretical, and used in quantum physics.Dean Raddin, is a Stanford researcher who has done a lot of research over the past fifty years on the subject.People have been doing this for thousands of years, in all walks of life. There is a lot of evidence that something is going on. Whether you term it astral projection, out of body experience, NDE, or psychological episode, something is happening. Also, going way back up the thread, who says that just because it's in your head it is not real? Reality is just what we agree it is. Look at jungian psychology for more on that.

Re: astral projection can a blind person do it?

Rope technique was invented by Robert Bruce specificly for a blind student of his. There are lots of good books and methods to use. Robert Bruce, and Robert Monroe, are my two favorite authors on the subject. When I have done it, it was like what I see in dreams. I know what is around me, but I have as much actual vision as I do waking. It is more an intrinsic knowing. As far as your question about what happens to the spirit? Well, that's the question everyone is trying to answer. My personal belief is that it's where it always is, it's just focused somewhere else. You're not leaving your body an empty shell by any means. I actually think Robert Monroe has it right and it's more a phasing of awareness rather than an actual projection. One tip, which I am admittedly bad at, is to write down your dreams. A stronger dream recall means you're focusing on that aspect of your consciousness, which will bring it into focus more and make it easier on your attempts.

The list of things I hate is a lot shorter, so...Gregorian chant: Musically it's neat, I would never listen to it by choice.Contemporary music: There are some gems, but as a whole, it is more math than music.Rap: I appreciate it as an art form, but it's not my thing. That's pretty much it other than the requirements I mentioned at the beginning of the post.

Then it becomes, do I have the money to spend on a lift or an Uber, or wait for sighted help?Where I live, we have no train access, buses are irregular at best, and will take me about ten times as long to get where I'm going as it would if I just waited for my wife to get home and go. It's enough for me to know  I can do it if I have to, but it's not worth the hastle most of the time. Plus, carrying groceries on a bus with a dog in the middle of winter is not fun, especially if you have a mile walk home from the bus stop.

So, I only made it to post 42, but these are my thoughts.First, the NFB has come across since I was made aware of them as kind of the big brother of the blind community, "don't use our canes? There's something wrong with you. This works for everyone your technique that you have been using for years is wrong."Second is as was stated their eager rush to litigation. Who knows they may have tried everything else first, but the only emails I get from them are lawsuits, which I only ever joined a mailing list for young professionals.Alright time to veer off topic. Blind people in my opinion, should not have conceal carry. Should we be able to own guns, yes, could I fight off a home invasion with a gun, you bet, but would I trust myself to use it in an active shooter situation, hell no.Second, sitting on exit rows of airplanes. I don't see the issue, the flight attendants give the spiel about how to open them in their safety talk, and do you really think sighted people could read it if it is smokey in the cabbin? In some instances, I think having someone who does not rely on sight would be a wiser choice as we do not rely on visual orientation and are less likely to get turned around in a confined environment.

As I understand socialism, it's giving production into the hands of the government, and that's where I disagree. Putting most things in the hand of government means it is doomed to fail, or it is used as a mechanism for control. What I would do is let the people who enjoy working on automation do their thing, and there are fortunately enough people  in the world that someone is going to love doing whatever needs to be done. IN fact, in time, people probably won't need much government at all, which would be a good thing. This would turn it more into a libertarian society than anything else. Also, yes, most money isn't real. That's why it is bound to fail, probably sooner rather than later.

Re: In Factories Of The Future, The Walls Have Ears

Say hello to our robot overlords! You can still have capitalism in a post-scarcity economy. The currency just becomes time. To use your example of landscaping, yes, the sod, the truck, and the dirt are all free, but those two guys who spent four hours helping with your lawn will ask you for a compensatory service in exchange. Not really a bad system. AT least people will be doing what they like to do, rather than doing it out of necessity. So, eight man-hours of lawncare might run you eight hours of social work, or something similar. Hell, one of them might really need the social work so will value your work at a greater value than his four hours of help, so you might need to supply two hours in return. There is a philosophy called Ubuntu, which goes along the principle that everyone works toward the common good four hours out of the week, the rest is spent doing whatever they want. You can learn more at https://ubuntuplanet.org

Re: Do you feel excluded?

I don't have much trouble with the social media side of things because quite frankly I find it really shallow that people are just posting memes about how they feel now instead of writing it out. If it weren't for the fact that there are a couple people and groups whom I follow, and there are  business opportunities that I want to take advantage of, I would feel no qualms about deleting my social media.Where I find I feel the most excluded in life is just being able to go places on a whim, with or without people. Yes, there are ways to get from point a to point b, even in a smaller town like where I live, but just to get to and from work costs me $20 on Uber, so do I really want to pay the same to go to the store? Or even I had to take a class to keep my massage license, and the class was down near Chicago. No trains ran directly there so I had to Uber. That was $80 one way, for two days, in edition to the cost of the class which was $400, so again, do I really want to spend that kind of money if it isn't a necessity?ON top of that, I feel weird saying to someone, "Hey, do you want to go to this thing this weekend? Oh, and you'll have to drive." I feel like they would eventually feel like I'm taking advantage of them., and oddly enough, nobody I know says, "Hey, do you want to come out for a couple drinks tonight?" So, there you go, I'm not going to put effort into something when other people aren't going to do the same.

When you hear things in the news about disability rights, it is almost always autism. The only group who I see less of than blind people are deaf people. That being said, you are right about employment. They can wrap it up in reasons all they want, but I can almost guarantee half, if not more, of my interviews, to get a teaching job, I was turned down because I was blind. This should really be in general game discussion, but think of it this way. If someone came up to you and said, "Hey, what do you think of Joe Shmoe?" Your answer would be your character concept. "Joe? He's a hard worker, but man, what a temper."

Re: embarrassed to hold the white cane

Regarding cane use, it is like everything else. Get comfortable with using it so you know when it will be safe not to use it. The cane, and/or a dog, is your best tool for safe travel. People don't often see people with canes, so when they get that visual jolt, they are much more likely to realize they will need to be more aware of their surroundings. If you didn't have it, they would eventually recognize you can't see, but there is no obvious visual clue to bring them out of their instagram daze. Oh wait, nothing breaks people's cell addictions, but at least they can trip over your cane and realize it was their fault for cracking their screen when they drop their phone.

Re: What is Everyone's Religious Beliefs

Have you guys read the thread about the gibberish after google translating stuff from language to language to language back to English? Well, between that and the original language itself changing, look at the arguments about the song, "Baby, it's Cold Outside," for just how fast things which had one meaning 80 years ago have completely different meanings now. Between those cultural influences, the influences of the Roman government, (I.e) early Christians believed in karma, reincarnation, and no such thing as the hell of today. It's amazing any of the positives of Christianity, or any religion is in its pure form.Organized religion inevitably leads to people having power over others saying what to believe. Being told by your priest, Buddhist monk, coven leader, or whoever what to believe is giving them power over you. However, it is my belief that there is something beyond what we know, whether it is cosmic force, God, Allah, or the sphere being alliance, life is too abundant on Earth, and I personally believe throughout the universe to be the result of randomness.I feel like people's relationship with that higher power is personal and if they want to believe in Christianity, praise Allah five times a day, or hug trees, be my guest. did not Jesus say, "Love God, Love each other?" To me, there's no real difference between the two.Oh, and the fact that God and the devil were placing bets on Job's faith, and that someone who is supposedly all-powerful is so insecure that they make this guy's life suck so much really makes one think that whoever that was, they were/are a complete ass.

Re: The Blind Comunity

Well, I think most guidedog users would agree, if someone doesn't want a dog, they probably shouldn't get one. I wouldn't force anyone into it because it is a lot of responsibility. For some people it is worth it, for others it is not, and that is okay, and probably better for all involved.Oh, and access is still an issue with canes, I saw this on my facebook newsfeed the other day.I was told by someone identifying as a security guard that he could not allow me to walk through this shopping center with my long white cane unless he got approval from his supervisor. He insisted that my cane was dangerous to other shoppers, especially children, because I could trip them. This man sounded African-American, so I was quite surprised that he was trying to deny me access to a public facility based on prejudice and segregationism. I generally find that African-Americans are very understanding when I complain about being denied access to a place of public accommodation because of my membership in a visible and identifiable minority group. African-Americans have suffered tremendously from this practice. After he had mocked me for a while, and told me multiple times that he had served in the military for many years to defend our country, as if it made him more credible, two more men, one of whom claimed to be the supervisor, arrived on the scene. He became substantially less aggressive, which I appreciated, because he certainly made me anxious with how he yelled at me. It's not fun being surprised by someone's presence when they start shouting at you.The supervisor and the third gentleman insisted that I created danger, especially for the children, who I could trip with my cane.No amount of explaining the Americans with Disabilities Act and my right to enter places of public accommodation, and no amount of explaining the simple fact that my cane is not dangerous when used properly, would satisfy them.I asked the supervisor if he would be willing to give me his information and a written explanation of their choice to invent their own laws for their business. He refused and insisted that he did not have to give me anything. He reiterated that he would not allow me to come into the international marketplace and hit children with my cane.It is too bad that I could not get a citation of their special policy, but I will keep searching for it. If we are really such a menace to society, I will do my very best to educate the blind community about how dangerous we are. People often tell us that there is no discrimination, but they do not walk in our shoes. When they put a blind person in a sweatshop making seven cents per hour, it comes from the same thing. When they rip a baby out of its mother's arms in the delivery room because that mother is blind, it comes from the same thing. The real problem of blindness is not the lack of eyesight. It is the misinformation and lack of understanding which exist in society. Given the proper training & opportunity, we, the blind, can lead normal, productive lives. Average blind people can do the average job in the average place of business as well as our sighted counterparts. We want to be treated as equals, and we must be freed from the shackles of low expectations.International Market PlaceInternational Market Place4 starsShopping DistrictShopping MallYesterday at 3:39 AMHonolulu, HI

Re: The Blind Comunity

A cane won't get you from point a to point b either, although if you do the route often enough, the dog will know where you are intending to go. My house is on the middle of the block with no tactile landmarks around it, and I taught my dog to target the driveway. Navigation is faster than with a cane, at least for me, because I don't need to find everything around me. She can find empty chairs, garbage cans, doors, stairs, curbs, we're working on finding my wife's car, and we just zip through crowds like they're nothing.I took the train and went down to the city for a class several months ago, and all I did was tell my dog to find the door outside. I hadn't been to that train station in ten years, so while I have the vaguest idea of where I needed to go, I just told the dog, and away we went. Two minutes later, we found the door outside.Guidedogs aren't for everyone, and they come with their own set of challenges. For the most part, they make life easier in a lot of ways though, and I think on the whole, they are worth it in my particular case.

People who are blind and successful, seem to be in insurance, computer science, or law. Yes the ADA has helped, but the ADA does not change people's minds just like there are still people who are racist, there are people who don't think blind people are capable, and some law passed in the nineties isn't going to make them think otherwise, it just makes them hide their prejudice behind, "hiring someone with more experience." There is so much potential in so many other fields, it's just a matter of breaking down the barriers to getting hired, and making the one or two things in those fields that are not accessible accessible.Honestly, most blind people I know are either unemployed because they make more on their benefits than they can at the jobs they are offered, work in call centers, are social workers, lawyers, or working with computers. I know one person in insurance, and plenty of massage therapists as well. Oh, and I know one person who got into education, but they ended up teaching at a braille jail, so despite their success, that's not where most people in education will end up, or want to end up.All of this boils down into blindness being a minor issue, and society being the largest contributing factor to the lack of success among the visually disabled.

Use both. My ear is my primary tool, and braille music is something I use to check if I can't figure out exactly what's going on.I can indeed read braille music, and it's not to terribly complicated to learn. The problem is when you get into situations like the kit. Here's a basic beat in the way Braille music would present it, although this is not braille music notation.Crash cymbal: beat one has a whole note. Measure of rest, measure of rest, measure of rest, measure of rest.ride: measure of eighth notes, measure of eighth notes, measure of eighth notes, half measure of eighth notes, halfnote rest.Highhat: quarter rest, eighth note, eighth note rest,  quarternote rest, eighth note, eighth note rest, quarternote rest. Repeat measure x3.Snare: quarter rest, quarternote, quarter rest, quarternote, repeat measure, repeat measure, quarter rest, quarter note, eighth note eighth note eighth note eighth note.bass: quarternote, quarternote rest, eighthnote eighthnote, quarternote rest, repeat measure, repeat measure, quarternote, quarternote rest, quarternote, quarternote.Simple enough if it's something really simple, but when you've got so much more going on, it adds up like crazy.

Re: Any blind drummers?

Having played drums now for over twenty years, I will say that while I think at least being able to talk to other musicians in their language is important, being able to read notation is less so. Drumming is a little more forgiving in this regard provided you steer clear of malleted percussion. It will definitely be something you want to learn eventually, but I have found learning by ear is much more effective, and if you're just playing kit, reading multiple-lined notation is a real pain if you're trying to memorize something. It's easier to actually hear what you want.

Re: Any experiences with massage chairs, seats or devices

My problem with the things you're asking about is the ones I have seen go over the spine, and that's not only uncomfortable, that's somewhat dangerous. Being a massage therapist myself, I would definitely recommend going to see someone. I tell my clients it's like going to a mechanic for your car. You can go when things break down, but it will cost you a lot of time and money, or you could come on a semi-regular basis for a tune-up and oil change. If that's not feasible because of money, I would suggest daily stretching, applying heat, and making sure to drink lots of water. Be mindful that if you're at a computer a lot of the time, you're posture is probably hunched forward with your head also forward. This contributes to pain between the shoulder blades and the neck because the pectoral muscles become tightened. One stretch that can help with the pecs is standing in a doorframe. Let's say take your left arm, and reach up so you
r elbow is bent at a 90 degree angle, and grab the side of the doorframe. Step forward with your left foot and twist slightly to the right. Stretch only to the point where you feel the stretch, but not to the point of pain, and hold for thirty seconds. As far as the neck goes, it really depends on where the pain is. You can sleep with a rolled up towel under your neck, you can do a couple of stretches from side-to-side, or you can try a different pillow.

I'm sorry, but Rome basically said what's cannon in Christianity. I admit the tenants of Christianity, love your neighbour, etc are good ones, but there's a lot that I disagree with. Also, the verse you cited is interesting. Revelation 18: 22 states, "The music of harpists and musicians, flute players and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No workman of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again." Context is talking about the fall of Babylon. I'm not understanding where you are coming from with that quote, and also Revelation needs to be taken most of all with a very flexible mind because it is steeped in so much metaphor. That being said, Jesus hung out with prostitutes, thieves, tax collectors, etc. He did not tell them to repent. He valued them for themselves. All the repentance and rules and stuff came from Paul especially. therefore, bringing this back on topic, losing fri
ends because they think differently than you is hypocritical of the teachings that you profess to follow.
