Re: Enabling Narrator in Windows Longhorn setup Ok, this is odd. First of all, to Criss, you dont need to keep the windows p e disk in the drive while installing longhorn. The windows preinstallation environment is loaded into memory when your computer starts, probably the reason why it takes like 3 minutes at least to boot. This is so you can insert another disk for an operating system or a repair program. So, why dont you burn the longhorn 4074 build to an actual disk. Once the vm starts talking, you can remove the disk, and insert your longhorn dvd. You dont want to change where the drive points to while in the vm. Now for my issue. I got a 6.0.5000 or something, and shouldnt have. Its probably vista. I installed, and when it came to drive partitioning, I did it like I did windos 7. Added a new partition on the unalicated space, by clicking new. Then hit the apply button on the maximum space and it said that windows failed to create the partition. However, I still see the partition in the list a nd it still allows me to format and goes through install just fine. I remove the disk after the speech is gone since I know from installing windows 7 you need to remove the disk as the thing boots up so that it doesnt try to boot the install disk again thus failing installation. I have the same issue. No sound. I need to install the 4074 build since that is longhorn. Ill ask Miguel, my low vision friend I have to look at it for me since he knows about longhorn. So, when Im in a vm, it works for a bit after I press ctrl+g, but after a few seconds of use it just throws me right out of the vm and back into my normal o s. I am not using longhorn yet but I do know a lot. For one thing, windows longhorn is not as extremely evil as windows Hellsta is. It used Microsoft Sam and did not have that dingus Microsoft Anna on it. I think it also looked almost exactly like xp. It may have had a search box at the very least. But the menus arent badly constructed, and I dont think there are ribbons. I have to say longhorn was the last good beta version of windows after xp before everything got messed up. With that being said, enjoy windows longhorn. Enjoy to the fullest! Actually, the guy who made vocalizer expressive on android actually started out trying to make eloquence for it. Had me made it, it wouldve been free just like vocalizer for android is. i think he was basing it off of jaws eloquence. but I think he turned thad2 down because of vocalizer. But, apparently, I got a full version of sendero gps, without paying. It was I guess accidentally on purpose. When I registered key maps, it gave me the free keymaps license. Quite soon after I registered, I logged into my sendero account, and guess what I saw? A 12 digit, valid full version license key! I entered it, it said incorrect license key but registered itself behind the scenes. I know because it no longer said keymaps version 2014, it said sendero gps version 2014, build 509 apex, like a normal full version! Its either a bug, or some secret deal I wasnt awar ofe. After all, I got it on launch day. There is another witness of this, I told Ben Blatchford about it and the same thing happened to him. That was my original soundcard driver I tried to do something to get stereomix when it wasnt designed for it, ended up losing my driver. Fortunately, my bluetooth headset used the speakers when the dongle wasnt connected, so I had something that could at least help me pull through. But instead of my driver that came with my system I ended up getting some Microsoft sound driver that doesnt sound as good. To be honest, a laptop without a screen would really be the real best choice for blind people.Okay okay, in all seriousness, me using a dell inspiren 1545 it seems pretty nice and is only around 7y00 bucks. If you want you can geta netbook from them which is cheeper and lighter, and even though it doesnt have a disk drive I suppose you could get an external usb disk drive. If you want a really fast machine the chromebook might be a good thing to try, but it cant do virtualization and chrome os is a farely small OS and you are mainly using online services on it and there are few offline apps. Id consider that a tablet rather than a laptop. If you want a mac you could get the macbook air but as is usually the case with Apples machines they are waaay too pricy. Oh, and heres the stuff you should stay away from. My friend had a n old toshiba laptop from serveral years ago. Just installing something fried the whole thing and the internet receiver is just not good. You should also stay away from hp as they are all about ads! I used to have a vista hp elete book and that was just a nightmare. It was popping up things linking to the norton trial and stuff like that forcing you to download them, and that plus the miserable experience of windows vista made it a horrible machine. Plus hp has a row of touch conrols above the function keys that are not accessible. They give you 10 gigs, and while you do start off with less space if you have about 10 bucks at your disposal you can pay per month for infinate, and I do really mean infinate, space for your hard drive! You could even pay yearly for infinate space. This is why a lot of people are more for the mainstream devices because these products for the blind will always remain behind your mainstream devices. In deed, even the braille plus 18 running android gingerbread for now is still a lot better than windows ce. The other good thing about running a more modern and popular OS is that a lot of the apps like the wordprocessor, calendars, chrome, email etc are the mainstream apps that happen to be accessible with some help from the interface ontop of it that makes it accessible. This gives them more room to work on other things rather than the programs and ensures that the everyday apps are stable. Okay face it the keyboard might not be of the best ergonomics and it might not have thumb keys, but what does that matter? And I still dont get why the unit still doesnt have built-in gps. Most of the 2011 and up note takers, think braillesense, have gps built-in and in addition to sense navigation they have free alternat ives that although not as advanced, still are good for free gps. So yeah, when youre thinking about whether a blind assistive device bs the mainstream competitors are better, you should consider those points. Is the product running on a frequently updated OS, and whats in it for you if you already have something like a tablet or iphone? Again, they should use the dictionary solutions that are used in more modern technology. Not only are they included in other products for free but an end user can just get it free stand alone. Im thinking of approaching them in a helpful sort of way to suggest a more free and more modern solution for dictionary. One thing they havent added, and will probably never add, is better tts. Eloquence not only lags more than keynote but its dying out. Really the only products that use eloquence are the Ghetto blindy products such as braillenote and screen readers, and not even that. Nvda uses espeak. And look at this. Iphone, despite its size and limited ram, uses nuance vocalizer. Braille+18 uses ivona and android as its backbone while still keeping the interface constant. But believe it or not, my friend successfully got Mac Alex on his apex replacin g keynote. Sadly I dont know how to do it but he does and I can contact him again because some of us really want better tts. I agree about the imap support though. Thats the very reason I cant use my email on it is that it takes hours to receive email. Heck even outlook came out before the braillenote yet it still supports imap and even http email. And they still dont have built-in gps! Sense has built-in gps with sensenav. Braillenotes sendero gps cant even try out realtime travel without purchasing the software with the receiver. Re: just got an Android phone Hi James. as for the rom thing that depends on a number of factors. 1. if using rom manager to install roms, you need to have a flashable backup of your current rom. there is no clockwork backup for the device I have, samsung galaxy tab 3 7 inch, smt210r with android 4.1.2. 2. you need to find instructions about rooting that particular device. 3. You need to actually find a rom that is compatible with the device in question. Re: just got an Android phone Hi Wanderer. I think I can provide some help here. Though I havent used a tmobile lg whatever I can tell it does have some accessibility issues. However, I wouldve recommended you buy the google nexus 5 phone, it being vanilla android without any custom overlay. For example, my samsung galaxy tab, although android, has the rediculously stupid touchwhiz garbage that destroys a lot of te accessibility. For one, the touchwhiz home has an unlabeled button or two and most of the top of the screen is covered by an annoyg weather wigit. Plus the keyboard is just plain inaccessible. If you hold the keyboard for even a second and dont release in time, it will display a popup forcing you to type in a bunch of simbols ruining the whole thing. Sure, theres fleksy, but it requires you to turn off talkback so kind of defeats the purpose a bit. So you want something that is stock android as you can get. I only recommend the google nexus devices. As for roms, I dont know about anything about roms for that device. Youd first need to find a rom for your device, find out how to root it, unlock the bootloader, and finally successfully flash the rom in question. I was trying to install the kitkat launcher and google services under a 4.1.2 galaxy tablet because someone said it worked. The launcher worked fine but all google services crash. Fortunately I still have xp in my vm and Ill have to just rely on that to stay up on eurpod for the longest time possible. I think Microsoft mighy actually stop people from using xp. Dont know if this is true or not, but on January 5th, xp will expire. The OS will still be functional, if you will, but every time you try to access the internet or any internet related thing itll say fatal error 609, we will now restart your computer to make sure there is nothing wrong with system files. And it will do that every time and foce you to keep rebooting. The situation can be compared to trying to run a windows 3.1 machine on the internet, today. If someone is already satisfied with their cu rrent os, then why should be forced to upgrade, when they just as well may not be able to upgrade due to financial barriers. And if they have a newer os or a completely different one altogether and have xp in a vm, then why should they be forced to trash their vm and go to win7 if they need it to run old programs or develop dos or command line based applications? Honestly, thats like Apple telling you if you dont buy a mac, well bust your windows machine and eventually blow it to smithereens. If my info is true, then Microsoft is doing a wrong thing, especially if all their future versions of win8 and up will be screwed up in their interfaces? Ill be keeping windows7 and my xp vm for as long as I possibly can. It seems like Microsoft are trying to reinvent themselves. However, they are making a big mess in the process. The only way to get softvoice or willow pond tts as its also called, is to get the sapi4 synth called chatterbox, which is an English and Rusian version of the softvoice male voice. I know either Ghorthalon or Robjoy has softvoice as I recognize one of the voices as the same voice that was used in the speaker test for operation black square. Only thing I can suggest is that you get backblaze or any similar backup service get a trial of it and back up your hard drive if you can select not to back up certain files do that then back up the stuff and reformat your hard drive then download a back up again. Or if you cant be selective get bitcasa and Im afraid you have to purchase infinate space for 9 bucks for one month to do a real backup then back up the stuff you know arent system files then do a reformat then get your files back through bitcasa. It seems like those files might be password protected or something if you seriously are not allowed to do it and Im afraid reformatting is the only option if all the suggestions people have posted dont work. Re: DECtalk for NVDA without GWDEC32.exe is here! Not yet. However infovox230 standard can be found in another topic on this forum. But you have to do a bit of menagling with the license a bit. There isnt a direct crack for it even though it is abandonware. However, you have to activate a 30 days trial license. Then use the keygen provided in the zip paste in your site code in the keygen then you have to check the limit on days and enter 3000 then hit the generate button. You will be then given your site key. Enter that into the reg dialogue. As a total side note, still synths though, Ive found the realspeak solo standard voices. However posting is unsafe because nuance unfortunately still decided to retain the copyrights on the standard voices even if they are not selling them they still wont declare realspeak solo abandonware like they did with infovox I think. However, thanks to Toms patched installer, it is now installed and introduced to the world of win7 lol. They can be used with nvda with sapi5, he he nice workaround to the vocalizer thing for nvda. I honestly think these tiflotechnia guys are making a bit too much money on us. Dspeech supports sapi5 and sapi4 voices, even though you cant use sapi5 and 4 in conjunction in one tts you can use any voice s and have conversations with them. About hal being able to minipulate voices that only works on s s i l synths, so in plain English that means strictly for hardware synths. He was using pc card version of the synth. The only difference on the hardware synths is that it uses dectalk v4.2 which people say was the best vesion of dectalk. I have a dell so yeah and, there is a way to record in stereo. After you check show disabled devices, if you down arrow from microphone array you will hear nothing in using jaws. If using nvda, you will hear idt high def or something like that. Enable it. Now, when recording, your recordings will be in stereo. But it only lets you use the soundcard, you cannot use stereomix and the microphone at the same time. At least with this method you cant.
