Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

Hello I'm noticing that their have been a few tactical battle maps that were added to the archive They sound really good, however I can't download them because the links seem to be broken, My email is acting up so I figured I'd report them on here. The first is the command and concor red alert map, the second is rampage map, and the third is command and concord abbie I think?

@John, most of my recordings are podcasts I've made for one or other organization over time. I'll send you them and let you know their various histories. As to 7zip, I actually switched from winzip to 7zip myself when I found I preferd the latter, though admitedly that was the free version of 7zip, and was many years ago back in 2004 or so, though I've never had issues with 7zip so haven't investigated what winzip or any other zipping program is doing now.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

If you have a license for winzip, you can use it to open 7zip files, either one does the job. Personally I recommend 7zip because of the fast file operation rate, but hey, if you paid for something you might as well use it as long as it does the job well. As an alternative there is Ultimate Zip, but make sure to get a really old version, because ultimate zip is now a paid product and it used to be free. Plus, I personally find the free version more accessible.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

Dark is exactly correct.Winzip may be able to work with 7z files - they are fairly common - but you're probably better off getting 7zip itself (I'll spare you my "7zip is free, don't buy something when you can get equal or better without paying" soapbox). There is a link to the 7zip homepage on agarchive.net, though the installers themselves are not hosted. One other reason I've taken to using 7z files is that it allows differentiation between files that have been modified in some way.An example of this being the archives for the open source version of tdv.Since I packaged the compiled archive myself, the 7z format was used to make it clear both to myself and users that this wasn't "original packaging" from the developer.@Dark:I'll look forward to your recordings .If there's any parti
cular information you want me to include in your section, just send it along with the files themselves.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

7zip, is an extremely good freeware unziping utility. The reason it's needed for the audiogames archive, is that the files there are compressed using the 7z format which is unique to 7zip, and compresses to a much smaller size than your standard zip or ra files, hence why it's been used on the audiogames archive to save space.I know the free version of winzip won't handle 7z format stuff, I'm not sure about the fully licensed one, but you can easily get 7zip from http://www.7-zip.org/ To unzip, just find the file in windows explorer and use the context menu to find 7zip and it's various extraction options.Hth.

@Superb:Nathan tends to rely relatively strongly on his license agreements to discuss things like distribution (see the star wars mod topic for examples), and (after rereading a few) does tend to demand that nobody distribute his products. The modern map readme states, in part, "Also please note that the maker of this map will not take kindly if you adapt, copy or change the code used for this map unless given express permission by Nathantech. This is just a quick update to note that, per a rather scatheing request by the developer, all of Nathan Tech's products have been removed from the archive. This does include Sound RTS content, due to the lack of an explicit license requirement for user content (i.e: something like GPL requires that anything created using software be free and open source, whereas Sound RTS doesn't specify).

[[wow]] Jack, that is amazing! Could you please privately let me know Dan's contact address so that I can send him a vote of thanks on behalf of  of Audiogames.net? I also didn't really think there was a problem  running the games on windows 10 so long as you installed the right dependencies, hell Aprone is still developing in vb6 and you can still run Jim Kitchin's games and games from gma etc.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

First of all, Kautilya, please send that over. We can upload that to the archive. And now, for some breaking new, sn the form of an email from Dan!Regarding bsc games.Sadly I don't have time to open-source the games. It's unlikely to happen, unfortunately. My plan once upon a time was to clean up the code, release the code (not the assets), and then leave it to the community to put in new assets and recompile the game for new platforms. But I don't have time to clean up the code, or go through it, and I won't post something that I haven't personally checked. If someone that I trust comes along and is willing to do that work one of these years, then maybe... but, again, unlikely. The assets can never be legally released by me because of copyright clauses on some of the music etc. Too much nonsense to track down. So the code is a remote possibility but the assets unfortunately are impossible.Feel free to host the games and a key generator
on the archive, though. That's fine. I think the community deserves at least that much.So folks, you know what to do. Immortalize the games all over the net, and we'll do the same as far as the  archive is concerned. And to any programmers out there *I'm pretty sure he may be looking for longtime developers, considering vb6/direct x and all* express interest in looking over the code, you should probably contact Dan about it. But for now, the games we've all been waiting for, you know it you love it, for new gamers these are a piece of audiogaming history, will be coming to the archive.

John,Thanks for all your work posting my PCS DOS and Windows games.Four of the DOS games wee4 sold on CD as they were too large to fit on floppy disks. They were designed for playing in Windows XP or DOS and were self-voicing, with all the text in the games recorded by a human. The games, Duck Hunt,  Snipe Hunt, Space Invaders,  and Red Dragon Kick Boxing Challenge,  were about 9 or 10 mb in size, but when trying them out on my Vista computer, I found the sounds skipped a bit.I don't have the time and energy right now to make these games work better in Windows.

Ishan:I've just checked my inbox, and it looks like your message never made it through. After a bit of digging, I was also able to determine its absent from the old server. If you sent the game as an attachment, you may want to check to see if you got a bounce back failure, as many email providers don't like you sending large files or those that contain executables. If you can send another message to submissi...@agarchive.net, we'll figure out a way to get the game included.Superb:I got another message about x-site this morning, and fixed a second typo that was breaking links.Everything should be green now.In other news:I've had very little time to work on the archive recently, so that's why everybody who submitted titles probably wants to break down my door over missed estimates.Sadly, this cycle is going to continue for a while. I'll be writing up as much as I can, but in the meantime, pleas
e be patient. On the plus side and thanks to Phil, all of the PCS DOS games now have descriptions. This took a solid rewrite of the page, so each individual game now has a heading instead of just being in a big list. We also now have several more full versions available for download.

I attempted to post most of this a couple days ago, but apparently it didn't go through. Apologies to everybody who has been stuck waiting. To answer a few things that have been left alone:@sljOur recent issues only strengthen my intention for the archive not to host legally questionable titles. If your game states to not distribute it, then we'd rather not.@ghorthalonI did send you an email several days ago, and certainly meant no offense by using Shane's server.Because of the popularity of the archive my goal was to get it functional as soon as possible, so that meant taking whichever offer could guarantee me no repeat events in the fastest time period. To answer recent posts:I just saw an email about l-works links, and the issue should be resolved. There was a naming inconsistency between my local copy and the files on the old server, so when I re-uploaded the archive, links that worked on the old setup
were no longer accurate.I'd also like to note that email and ftp accounts should be back online, so if you need to do work on the server, you should be clear to do so.Anyone who has made submissions should be aware that your directory is now empty, so if you want files to be present in your folder for whatever reason, you'll need to re-upload them (all submissions were downloaded before the server switch).

Agarchive.net is now on the new server. All files have been uploaded, and should work as per usual. There is a period of downtime when switching servers for the internet to catch up, so if you see a page claiming technical difficulties instead of the main archive, try again in a few hours. Please note that email may or may not function for a short while while I continue migrating accounts. If its urgent (and the site not coming up isn't urgent for a few days yet), you can contact me directly atjpcarnemolla([ a-t ])gmail(.)comFor those of you who had ftp access, please make sure you can access the full archive via your browser before uploading files. That's right, Jollyleaf, the very same one we're using Using that on another server will only run us into the same problem we ran into before. So for our purposes, I'd go with Ghorthalon's server because then we can run on a server that's completely independent, and free from constraints from any commercial hosting provider.

His server's 2 terabytes, there's a few people already hosting their space up there, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

John, normally when you run on Ghorthalon's server, your address is yourdomain.tdrealms.com, so in our case it would be agarchive.tdrealms.com. All our html pages point to agarchive.net, so that would have to be changed manually. Unless Ghorthalon can set us up with agarchive.net on his server. As for the reason the games directory was deleted, that unfortunately does not surprise me. A part of me thought we'd have it coming, but I figured we should give it time as we had enough explanation on the site, the faq, the game's pages for the Average Joe to understand that we are only hosting the demos of commercial titles, the games and patches for abandoned ones, and free titles, all that allow distribution of the setup files, and that if a dev didn't want their game hosted we can be reasonable with that. But nearly every hosting provider will get suspicious if a huge amount of exe's are uploaded at any given time, the size of the archive alone was probably en
ough to get us scrutinized by the host. Now that this has happened to us, I feel it's better we run off of someone who we know we can rely on, a friend and one of this community's own developers, running on his own server, rather than a commercial webhost that may or may not agree with what we're doing.

Hi Jack,Fortunately, since I own the agarchive.net domain, we should presumably just be able to update the IP that it points to a new server, instead of updating links. If I could get a little more info on Gorthalon's server that would be great - storage, bandwidth capacity (mb/sec, not limits), etc.Jolly leaf has also mentioned running a VPS - I'm going to continue looking into that as well, and will run an analysis once I've got a few options to choose from.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

John, unfortunately I see this as a very common thing in the terms of service of most web hosting providers. That vague statement that a site cannot be a file storage, or a series of pages of download links, and has to have functional pages within. Granted, this site does, so if that was all there was to it this site would fit that criteria. However, I have a feeling there's some sort of behind the scenes discretion on the host's end, i e, maybe they don't look too kindly on a huge bulk of applications being uploaded to a server at a given time, and they could've gotten suspicious. At the same time, antivirus programs sometimes don't know what they're doing and flag a lot of games, particularly bsc's for some reason, and take them down. Personally I think a dedicated server with no antivirus, something to hold us back, no bandwidth constraints that I'm aware of, would be a good idea for a huge page like this. However, here's one huge, h
uge problem. Since we included the full-length url's in every link, we'd have to go through the huge pain-in-the-ass process of directing every download/information link to agarchive.tdrealms.com, which will take a good few hours to do in one sitting. Unless, Ghorthalon could provide us with a domain on his server rather than a subdomain. If this could be done, would you be fine moving servers? I just think, that while Jollyleaf could definitely fix this for us, this is still a constraint we'd have to deal with, and who's to know if it'll happen again or not. I think a good idea to move things over to a server with no constraints, nothing beyond the control of Ghorthalon and us, and a faster running server in general.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

Second update:It appears that in order to distribute the games, cPanel is going to ask for documentation for each file that we do in fact have rights to distribute them (since the directory is quarantined, there's no way for either I or Jolly Leaf to see which files are causing issues).Since providing this documentation essentially requires installing and reviewing the licenses for over 450 different titles, it would seem vastly more expedient to search for somewhere else to host the games. Therefore, I'm actively looking for feedback: does anybody have ideas for where to store the files that would make them easily accessible and keep them available on a constant basis?I'll be posting this message to both audiogames.net and the audyssey mailing list, so hopefully we'll be able to come up with something that works.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

Update:Yes, the games are still down. No, don't send hatemail to Jolly Leaf - they're doing everything they can to help out with this.Reason: cPanel's system has flagged currently unknown files for copyright reasons, i.e: it doesn't think we should be distributing games because we didn't write them. The current plan is to wait and see what we can do to get the issue resolved.I would advise against something as complicated as a torent setup, because of the software and knowhow requirements. Using something like that inherently limits your user base to only those who are willing to install and learn a new piece of software, whereas a website or ftp based system allows access by everybody with a browser.

Hi John,If you are interested, you can host the archive on Ghorthalon's server. It's hosting a lot of things including the PG13, dragonapps and a few other sites so it's very well maintained, has 2TB of space so the archive can expand passed 25GB if needed, and because it's a dedicated  linux server there is no anti-virus checking the files or anyone else deciding what gets flagged. We actually tried to make a games archive for PG13, but it didn't get very far, so this way we could link people to a working download page if we stream a game which is no longer officially available. I would also be more than happy to help out writing out links and descriptions if you need more help with it.If you're interested, send an Email via forum to either Ghorthalon or myself.

Re: Announcing the audiogames archive

Erick, as a contributor to the archive and as just a forum member in general, I must say that post was pretty unnecessary. It is very easy to see that the links have gone down most likely due to a flag from an Antivirus, not because of anything we did. Having ftp access to the server I can confirm, for your benefit and for everyone else wondering, that the last time I logged into the server, the games directory was gone. Complaining to us is not only unnecessary, but it does nothing to solve the problem. If anything, JollyLeaf, our webhost, would be the one to complain to, but you still shouldn't do that, because they're doing all they can too. Shit goes down all the time, and this is just one of those incidents. Antivirus can be a real pain in the ass at times, which is why I personally just steer clear from it in general, and just use my own logic to be mindful of what I'm downloading, without any "help." As for the Bt Sync folder, I could see about maki
ng a bt sync folder. Perhaps one can be made, but we'll definitely be passing out read only keys this time round. For those who may remember, I did once set up an abandoned games bt sync folder of all the stuff I had, and I made the mistake of giving an open-access key out publicly. Turned into a mass trainwreck. We had movies placed in the folder, brand new games that were still around on their websites, some people uploaded cracked games, it was an epic fail. I think I may remember the infinite v file duplicating virus hitting the folder , thought not sure on that one. Eventually the whole thing resulted in a lot of shit getting deleted, and I was hosting on a cloud at the time which you can't trust anymore after my experience with two! platform shutdowns, Wuala and Bitcasa. So, if I'm gonna do an alternate bt sync folder, it will,1. be hosted on my 2tb external hd, so will definitely have backups. I still have my older external as well so I can have a seconda
ry backup in case someone hacks the folder.2. will definitely be giving out read only keys to everyone.3. May or may not be as up to date as the website. It looks like with bt sync you have to choose whether to give out read only or public keys, you can't give public ones to a few people then read only ones to the rest, sadly. This is why Bt Sync is not a very reliable option, so a fair warning that if one is set up, it will most likely be for alternate backup purposes only. If you really wanted the whole archive in one download, you could probably do a save complete webpage in your browser.
