Does all of that mean that a professional turntable is not suitable for

Well... yes and no.
Because money is a deciding factor here. My whole system so far is
about $ 2500. So a system may very well sound too much of this or too
little of that, because of the balance act. I have to compromise,
especially since I have a very broad taste in music.

What motivated me to upgrade my CD front end was the digital edge and

WRT to the reclocking, I replaced the crystal with an XO3 clock from
tentlabs. This clock is connected to another clock (XO-DAC)on the DAC.
The tentlink connection keeps both clocks in sync.
The crackling appears after one tracks ends and before the next begins.
Usually, it will happen also on
My best guess would be that your clocks still aren't in sync... have you
compared the two clocks on a scope? It will be really obvious - if
they're not in sync, then one channel will show a steady waveform and
then other will be blurred or dancing all over the place.
That would certainly be
I don't have a scope but plan to get one fairly soon so can try then.
I doubt that the music is masking unsynched clocks. The auido quality
is the best I have ever heard. And it is only with particular CDs (and
very much a minority) that I hear the problem.
I do have an unmodified Squeezebox,
