[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA
Hello all: I have a DNA question I hope someone with more knowledge can answer. Myself and a few other family members tested with 23andMe. My oldest sister (who is actually my half sister (different fathers)) and I recently discovered we have a half brother. You guessed it, we all have different fathers. While looking at mine and Dean’s (half brothers given name) shared segments, how can we have completely identical match on the X chromosome when we have different fathers? My paternal haplogroup is R-P311 while Dean’s is R-CTS6. All three of us share the same maternal haplogroup U5b... Cross-posted with Island routes group Hello All: I am dealing with a (hopefully) minor brick wall. My grandmother's family the Silva's immigrated to Hawaii in 1906 from Sao Miguel. The family consisted of: Manuel Bernardo Silva b: 1870 Mae de Deus Maria (nee Medeiros) Silva b: 1873 Mae de Deus 5 children Maria b: 1892 Ermelinda :b: 1895 Maria Anjos b: 1898 Manuel b: 1903 Francisco b: 1904 While in Hawaii they had 3 more children Joseph B. b: 1907 Lihue Laura b: 1910 Lihue Gloria b: 1912 (grandmother) The family moved to California in 1913 arriving in San Francisco 22 Apr. This is where my "problem" begins. I have found the Alien passenger manifest for the S.S. Mongolia (have copies) that lists Manuel, Maria, Maria A, Manuel, and Francisco. Hi Nelia, I'll try my best to keep my story, which is similar to yours as small as possible. When I started the only information I had besides my grandparents names and birthdates, was their parents names. So I entered the info I had, tried to to find more. After a year or so I stopped. Then after a 2-3 year hiatus I took up the search again with the help of some family I was able to find my great grandparents passenger manifest which showed they emigrated to Hawaii in 1906. My grandmothers family came from the Azores (obviously), while my grandfathers came from Ilha Madeira. Both on the same ship. With the help and suggestions of many people in this group I have been able to go back quite a few generations. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Some Thoughts on Ethnicity Estimates
Hello everyone: The following is a reply I received from FTDNA about the Ethnicity Estimates: Family Tree DNA <https://www.facebook.com/FamilyTreeDNA/?rc=p> Hi Paul. The myOrigins results are your personal genetic ancestry that reflects the last 100 to 2,000 years (about four to 80 generations). They may also reflect one population that mixed with another in ancient times and became fixed in one of your populations. Autosomal DNA, which is what is tested in the Family Finder, is able to give us this information because it's inherited from both parents. On a larger scale, when comparing the autosomal DNA of hundreds or thousands of people from a specific location to the autosomal DNA of hundreds or thousands of people from a different specific location, you can see genetic variance in populations. The collections of hundreds or thousands of people from a specific location are called reference populations. Autosomal DNA testing can compare your Autosomal DNA to that of each reference population to calculate your ethnic percentages. Whenever new reference populations are added into the mix that your DNA is being compared to, or whenever the the reference populations themselves are changed, you might see some changes in your reported ethnic percentages. This does not mean that the previously reported percentages were incorrect-- they were correct based on the information available at the time. The new ones are also correct based on the information that is now available at this time. FTDNA recently updated many of our existing reference populations and added several new ones, and because of this, your results may have changed. Some of these changes may be minor differences and some may not. We have replaced the old reference populations with new ones. The names given for the regions these populations represent in most cases remain the same, but the academic reference population used to determine the percentage match to that region is based on new information available. Again, this does not mean the previous results were wrong. Both sets of results are correct based on the best information available at the time it was given. Autosomal DNA testing for ethnic percentages is a young science that is less than a decade old. With any scientific procedure, you will see technological advancements with age. You can see a tutorial for how to navigate the new layout of myOrigins here: https://www.familytreedna.com/.../myorigins/walkthrough/ <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.familytreedna.com%2Flearn%2Fautosomal-ancestry%2Fmyorigins%2Fwalkthrough%2F&h=ATMUX3l2EibiBfBSFaWaOSq6lzVsz5gcx8gcHi7CV-O-AzDJ-qzH6Jnp5O7JRyjnpyowMrWUUeApx2MVSbXPg-6ipcdiIIZ6TajHpyJN_bDcFrB_ChAnuAbFC84rydY4kao> You can read the descriptions of all 24 population clusters here: https://www.familytreedna.com/.../myorigins-population.../ <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.familytreedna.com%2Flearn%2Fftdna%2Fmyorigins-population-clusters%2F&h=ATP7N8jtNRqlh_aSKRlrudxg38bnZ484vFuOdzAjLEQ35gy_AchdZkuKK_QqxEJ5v2QWMg6Mxsd8rkdS71muP_TTQ4tZsmrDeaI2UQca3ZjAlDNk0s4_wRaSZ_E_pecpq98> For more information about this topic, we recommend the following articles: https://dna-explained.com/.../family-tree-dna-myorigins.../ <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdna-explained.com%2F2017%2F04%2F04%2Ffamily-tree-dna-myorigins-ethnicity-update-no-april-foolin%2F&h=ATMv1UtdgJrDkEnFQ13BS_nIkOZYVSiGOw4jN_UYaUOsqaczclpkW7v22ko3mZhW4mSEyVfxtwvjp0JT-p-fQyfTK52flsdFmY0Xr3e-NzjKjZjHJIC3zCdVidu0N9bsoD8> https://dna-explained.com/.../concepts-calculating.../ <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdna-explained.com%2F2017%2F01%2F11%2Fconcepts-calculating-ethnicity-percentages%2F&h=ATM784YdpQxMMXbe7bkDBqXJqOTaRlkInD7ory8hygN2vICSDN2dhru7QMKXTyWZBDAYRTXqVrzfsXuXT4HuglfKDjR8WOBgoytV8sTnJrnrwkvqnYAwqPnV1GuOw_WuoN4> <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.familytreedna.com%2Flearn%2Fautosomal-ancestry%2Fmyorigins%2Fwalkthrough%2F&h=ATNLqmv8UfENFCQw7Qdh3H8gf6yMdKiA_ldRxVCJr29ABaHKgykBqDKXtylpU8ds__BL3F7gxbvcJVRfx19rQx56fVGkAGNh25TV-VlCsoHYx-S5QyPNFS4_q1t2MBuVKjk&enc=AZOD4Qnm_Sl7VhLFDTfuktr-66aoPixx1KrAwuv2BrQsVH6JDQ_9_7r2TKc-Vj37V2V51WhhQXEdFYa3ruyoQvkbIRauEEgbUDkm7UypF5fBMQk8ET95_JCGsCrCv8mV9mryvlp8xdVokwlLliurbvb4Brb-Iatq9Swhg1-QgOQUOQ&s=1> FTDNA Learning Center – myOrigins Walk-through <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.familytreedna.com%2Flearn%2Fautosomal-ancestry%2Fmyorigins%2Fwalkthrough%2F&h=ATP5yYWNXakU1RwKforLRo5sFjIwfb7iKDk3P9N3_BKSsfK8zGyPM_-Jf6l3DVlz6xRgCIdRhTKNEK-mlaeIqMbN-Y3ogU8A0NaovjaZGBggBxyNo4MLvW7oEbWVo-KYKgE&enc=AZNjYx8QzUAeEep773a8dBWkI7DXgD8NDNCycOuxz-nT2BwDnyX1iJoBJwTcMQlz_pVx7WR-qymYnX4WAZOIsQpZ4TzA3Ipx1CnvBa71kt9V9uxfSF5WUiTQAeVaGyCr0Z2rCS-NFjL4-bGIp3oTRLlquyDBWPUEXzgT7uE1S5pkfA&s=1> FAMILYTREEDNA.COM Hope it helps. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Jose de Medeiros of Ilha Sao Miguel
Thanks Rick for your suggestion and Cheri for your info. I had stopped looking at the baptism records at the end of December 1827, then looked from 1826 to the mid-teens. Took your suggestion started from December 1830 and eventually found Jose's parents marriage in late 1828. So I have been searching the baptism records from the marriage date forward. Since the early 1829 Mae de Deus baptism records have water damage at the top of the page the beginning of those records are missing the child's name, the father's name and at times even the mother's name. I'll have to go back to those records and try to find either a grandparents name or an Aunt or Uncle that happens to be a padrinho (hopefully I spell it correctly). Louie, you are correct. that is where I am looking. Paul G. [AZORES-Genealogy] Jose de Medeiros of Ilha Sao Miguel
Hello All: I have been trying to find the baptism record of my 5th great uncle Jose de Medeiros. So far the only item I have been able to find if the marriage record to my 5th great aunt Anna de Jesus. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1841-1854/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1841-1854_item1/P111.html (right side) This record is a bit light and hard to read. I have tried everything I could to be able to read the record. Jose's parents are Antonio de Medeiros & Bernardina de Resendes. This information came from the above marriage record and his son's baptism record. The marriage record states that both families are from Mae de Deus, but I have yet to find Jose's baptism record (back to 1815). Nor have I been able to locate his parents marriage record. Does the marriage record list another village Jose is from, or his age at the time he was married? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder's new matching tool (on FTDNA)
I found that when you have a relative with a broken link (what looks like a broken paper clip) if you click the the "paper clip" to re-establish the link this will take care of the drag and drop. This may not remove your relative(s) immediately from the DNA match list. To update, all I did was to go out of my tree and back in. Those relatives that were on the match list the first time were off. Paul G. Thanks for the replies. Here is another baptismo record: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1880-1882/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1880-1882_item1/P16.html (lower right & continues on next page) I am having problems reading some words on the last two lines. [AZORES-Genealogy] 3rd great aunt Maria Quiteria de Jesus of Mae de Deus, Sao Miguel
While looking for baptism records for another relative I stumbled upon this record for Manuel, filho adulterino do Maria Quiteria [my 3rd great aunt]. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1880-1882/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1880-1882_item1/P174.html (lower right) according to Google translate, after her name it says married, (a word I am unable to figure out) absent husband. What do the mean? Did he just up and leave, if so WHEN? Possibly did not return after his mandatory military service? I have not found an obito for the absent husband (Marianno de Mello). Maria is the daughter of my 3rd great grandparents Manuel Jacintho Duarte & Maria Quiteria de Jesus. In Mae de Deus Maria married Marianno de Mello in 1867. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1860-1869/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1860-1869_item1/P125.html (lower left/top right) Marianno and Maria had a daughter, Maria born in 1868 but died six days later. Another daughter was born in 1869 also named Maria. I am still searching for other children from this marriage, so far nothing through 1874. [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese-African ancestry
According to both FTDNA and 23andMe I have some African DNA in my family. FTDNA has my total at 2% African, while the 23andMe total is 1.5% Sub Saharan African. I have no idea if this is from my paternal or maternal side of my family. My paternal great grandparents were from the Azores (Silva-de Medeiros) and Madeira (Gomes-de Sousa). Maternal great grandparents were from Sweden (Berglund-Jonsson) and England (Matthews-Harvey). [AZORES-Genealogy] Confusing Lomba do Loucao abp
How common was it for the priest to switch the name of the child with the father? The link below I believe is for a son (Manuel) of my third great uncle Jose Bernardo de Andrade, but the priest placed Jose's name as the child and Manuel as the father. The mother is correct Maria de Conceicao as well as the both sets of grandparents. I have checked for an obito for Jose in Lomba do Loucao and found nothing, besides No.3 in the column lists someone died in 1986 (Jose?). Nor is there a marriage listed for Manuel and Maria. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-LOMBADOLOUCAO-B-1900-1904/SMG-PV-LOMBADOLOUCAO-B-1900-1904_item1/P108.html (lower left to upper right) Thanks, Paul G. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Great-uncle Francisco Silva
Hi Theresa, I'll take any help you can provide. My email address is pagome...@comcast.net. As for the strange way I have the surname listed, my 3 great grandfather Bernardino Jose de Andrade b: 1819 moved to Sao Miguel from Santa Maria sometime prior to his first marriage in 1841 to Escolatica Maria do Espirito Santo (it is along her line that the Silva surname appears). This marriage produced 3 children. Their first child Francisco Bernardo (2 great grandfather) used the surname of de Andrade until his children were born when he adopted the Silva surname. Hence the da Silva/de Andrade surname. It just so happens that his wife Anna de Mello adopted the surname de Medeiros (her paternal great grandmother's surname) when she married Francisco. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Great-uncle Francisco Silva
Hi Cheri, As I stated in my original post I have checked ALL the baptism records of ALL the parishes of Povoacao and found nothing. The closest record had the father as Manuel Pacheco, the mother as Anna de Medeiros, but the grandparents (paternal & maternal) are wrong. Also, I have checked the passports starting with the one closest to when the Suveric left and going back to 1902 stopping at every person named Manuel. No Manuel Bernardo Silva and family listed. I believe there was a separate list kept for those whose passage was paid for by Hawaiian Sugar Plantation conglomerates (aka the Hawaiian Immigration Board). I even e-mailed the CCA asking if there was such a list. Their reply.the cost of doing the research, and how to pay. After the Suveric left Sao Miguel it went to Ilha Madeira to pick up more people. The Suveric left Funchal on 10 Oct 1906 for Hawaii. Sometime after leaving they discovered (from what I have read) 500 stow-a-ways. Kind of hard to hide a family of seven on a boat. Is there a record of individuals or family's moving from one island to another? If so, where would I find it? Lately I've been researching my 4th great grandparents, Jose Ignacio de Andrade & Barbara Jacintha and their 7 sons. All were born in Assuncao, Vila do Porto, Santa Maria. I found baptismo records for everyone and Jose & Barbara casamentos, but no marriage records for the children nor obitos for anyone. Until 1841 when my 3rd great grandfather Bernadino Jose de Andrade (Jose & Barbara's first born) married Escolastica Maria do Espirito Santo in Estralla, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel. So either Bernardino or the whole de Andrade/Jacintha family moved between 1836-1841. *de Andrade/Jacintha Family* Jose Ignacio de Andrade b: 1796, filho Jose Francisco de Andrade & Francisca Roza, married Barbara Jacintha b: 1797, filha Boaventura Jose de Braga & Francisca Roza Bernardino Jose de Andrade b: 1819 Francisco de Andrade b: 1821 Manoel de Andrade b: 1823 Ignacio de Andrade b: 1826 Antonio de Andrade b: 1829 Jacinto de Andrade b: 1833 Mariano de Andrade b: 1836 The mother's of Jose and Barbara have different birth years, 1754 & 1766. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: CCA 500 Error
Hi Cheri, I've tried using both Internet Explorer (PC running Win 8 or above) and Google Chrome (on the same PC) and get the 500 Internet Server error on both. At times I can view 4-5 pages before I get the error. I also get the message on my IPad. I get this error whether I am viewing the records via Tombo.pt or CCA. So I agree with Laura, that the error is coming from the CCA site. Paul G. [AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco Gomes from Madeira to Masachusetts
I know this is not the right group for this post, but I believe I will get more responses here than the post I have on the Madeira site. My great uncle Francisco Gomes was born in 1876 Santa Maria Maior to Jacinto Gomes and Jacinta (née de Jesus) Gomes. In April 1912 he received his passport and left Madeira. The destination on the passport says USA. There is an entry at Ellis Island (web site) of his arrival with the destination of Boston. I have his passenger manifest on the S.S. Konig Albert; a WWI draft registration card, dated 12 Sep 1918 listing his mother as his closest living relative (Francisco living at house #2 Sunnyside Park, Taunton, MA); and a 1923 phone directory with the same address. He had a brother, my great grandfather, Victorino Gomes, his wife and son that immigrated to Hawaii in 1906. I am hoping someone can help with information on Francisco after he arrived in the U.S., or there maybe a long lost relative in the group or someone that may know his family. Julio Thanks for the assistance. I have one correction for you. 9F v.Maria Baptista FURTADO you have her year of birth as 1746 when it should be 1741. For the last couple of weeks I have been researching my 6th ggrandparents Bento Furtado & Maria Teixeira. Their daughter, Maria Bautista is my 5th g grandmother. [AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco Silva/da Silva
I am in need of the vast knowledge of the group. I have a great uncle, Francisco Silva/da Silva b: 1904/1905. Other than Sao Miguel I have no idea where he was born/baptized. All of his siblings were born in Lomba do Loução, Povoacao (those born before they immigrated) with a sister's death in February, 1906 (age 6). The U.S. 1910 Census lists Francisco's age as 7 and his immediate sibling, Manuel at 8. I found Manuel's baptismo record with the date of January 1903. Prior to that a sister Maria 1900-1906. The passenger manifest for the Suveric lists their ages as 3 for Manuel, Francisco-2. Hopefully someone may have him and his family in their tree, or could suggest where to look. [AZORES-Genealogy] Manoel Alveres Figueira of Sao Miguel
Hello All: For the past few weeks I have been trying to find all the marriages of my 6X grandfather Manoel Alveres Figueira (Bagango), I know he has been married at least three times. His last marriage (that I know of) was to Josefa Alfonsa in June 1752 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1712-1766/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1712-1766_item1/P273.html (left page). This record lists him a the widower of Luzia Cabral. Manoel and Luzia were married on 13 Mar 1726 http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1712-1766/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-C-1712-1766_item1/P81.html (left page). Here is the widower of Izabel da Costa. Manoel & Izabel's marriage is the one that I cannot find. I have searched the casamentos records for all of Povoacao, Nordeste, Vila Franca do Campo, and most of Ribeira Grande for the years of 1700 - 1708. I believe that I found Izabel's obito http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-O-1687-1745/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-O-1687-1745_item1/P98.html (bottom right & top left of next page). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maneol Alvres viúvo Izabel da Costa?
Hey JR, I emailed you the info I have on Manoel & Izabel's children. Shortly there after I believe I found their marriage record in Sao Jorge, Nordeste. Thanks for the help. [AZORES-Genealogy] Assistance with Achada marriage record for Izabel da Costa
I hope someone on this list has better software to clear up the record below. The top record I am hoping is my 6-7 g grandparents marriage record. It is dark and there are quite a few ink splotches. I see the date of 15 Jun 1698. I cannot see the grooms name, nor his mother's name. His fathers name looks to be Antonio de Aruda. I can see Izabel da Costa and her mother Anna da Costa but only her father's surname Oliveira http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1690-1728/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1690-1728_item1/P25.html Thanks, Paul G. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maneol Alvres viúvo Izabel da Costa?
I have found the baptism record for Joaquim http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1705-1719/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-B-1705-1719_item1/P165.html (lower left), and the obito for Izabel da Costa http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-O-1687-1745/SMG-PV-MAEDEDEUS-O-1687-1745_item1/P98.html (bottom right, then top of next page). But I have not been able to locate a baptismo record for Barbara (I'll keep looking), nor a marriage record in Mae de Deus or Faial for Manoel Alvres & Izabel da Costa. Paul G. [AZORES-Genealogy] Maneol Alvres viúvo Izabel da Costa?
Trying to find the parents of my 5-6 X g-grandfather Manoel Alvres. Below is the link to his 2nd(?) marriage to Luzia Cabral (record on the left). Where it lists his name I see Maneol Alvres viúvo Izabel da Costa, and before Luzia's name appears to be 25 (vinte sinco). Would this mean Izabel died in 1725?
