My Great Grandfather is Anthony Faria Emma and Manuals son. My mom Lisa Faria
said that Emma did alot on her own because Manual walked out or left them. I
never heard of him dying but the family grew up very poor.
My mom said that Emma was very kind and had a sign she would hang outside that
All of the experienced researchers here can find a few Manuel Farias, about
16-17 years old, coming to America around 1893 or 1894. I can take a
jigsaw puzzle piece and jam it together to make it fit. Doesn't make it
right.
Sam, you've GOT TO start with your ancestor's death and work backwards.
We have his birth date from the draft card.
It's 18 Jan 1877
I doubt military service took him out of the household as he was 53 years
old in 1930.

Nice Manny! Looks like whoever was filling those records out abbreviated
the name Manoel and it appears there were lots on that ship! I found a
record too from 1893 showing a Mansel (Manoel) Faria on the ship Peninsular
from Fayal to port NY, NY arriving 9 May 1893. The age is about right. My
Cheri I cannot find a definitive death for Manuel. I've found several but
unsure if I have the right one. Plus now there's a possibility he changed
his name to John before his death too. Would it help if I get my
grandfather Lawrence's death certificate first? Maybe that will have clues.
Haha Dano! Yes, I've tried the Ellis Island ones. And yep, there are some
very creative ways of spelling the same name! In my case, I found a Manoel
spelled Mansel because someone couldn't read the record and thought the
o was an s.

Sam F,
Again, get Emma's death. If you are pretty certain she was widowed and not
separated at the time of death of her spouse, she may be buried next to her
husband. Or at least the same cemetery. You get his name and death date
off his tombstone. So go chase Emma.

Hi Cheri,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I just assumed that since my subject heading
said California, people would know that's where I was talking about. Port
Costa is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, CA. Manuel was
living there in 1900 apparently. After that, most of my records
Sam F,
When dealing with census records, people only drill down to the county
level. The rest is meaningless for the audience. Besides, some of those
census tract names change!
You're going to have to do as many things as you can in the link that I
provided to my how to. You need your island
Sam F,
You have Emma's death info?
Name: Emma Faria
DOB: 12 July 1880

Mother's maiden: Vargas
You really need to order Emma's death from Santa Clara County or the State
of California. I think the fee is about $15 now.
Sammie,
Do you know from which island your great-grandfater was? That will help

Apparently, you haven't tried to research the Elllis Island records - you
can get some really interesting spellings on Portuguese names there also.
That's why its called
re-search - you never get it right the first time...

Here are a few links from Faial that fall within Manuel's birth date of
1976/7, the marriage certificate would help to clarify the parents name.

I can explain some of that. Lawrence's wife Ruth deserted the family
sometime after my mother and her twin (Doris and Deloris) were born in
1933, and 1940 when they were all living with Emma, Lawrence's mother.
Lawrence enlisted in the military in 1942, so the girls stayed with their
Yes, if this is the right Emma, I do have that information. I'm thinking I
should write off for her death info, and for Lawrence's birth certificate,
because it will list who his father was: Manuel or John.

Yes, I have that draft notice in my records. I was thinking maybe Manuel

Yes, that is a record I have and the address I have also. I've been able to
document them living at that address from sometime around 1922 through at
most 1947, although a couple times the address changed to 2534 Pine Ave.

Nice! Are you getting records from Ancestry or Familyfinder or some other

Sammie,
Since you are writing to a worldwide audience, you're going to have to put
more clarification on some places.
No clue where Port Costa is.
At the time your ancestor was born, the spelling was Manoel. He probably
learned to modernize after his immigration.
Feria would be a
