Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Holiday Sale (through Dec. 26th)

2019-12-25 Thread Nancy Couto
Dear Bill Ricardo,

Thanks for including your Y-DNA haplogroup. I checked my brother’s matches and
it appears you match him at 67 markers with a distance of 6. According to
FTDNA’s estimate, there is a good chance we could have a common ancestor within
12 generations. My brother’s name is Edward Couto Jr., and I manage his
account.

You don’t appear to be a match for either my brother or me on Family Finder.

I will email you privately.

Nancy Couto

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Holiday Sale (through Dec. 26th)

2019-12-25 Thread Gordon soares
Hi Bill:

I know what you mean about Ancestry.com . I have the same
problem getting info off their site since I cancelled them. I use Family tree
maker (I have a Mac and can’t use MyHeritage without a lot of goofing around on
the Mac). Nonetheless,I have found by looking at both MyHeritage as well as FTM
(and a couple of others) that they seem to have the same data construction as
Ancestry. However, every time you go to get information such as a “suggestion
leaf” from Ancestry you get their page to sign up. You have to be a bit cagey
but I have found ways to get around most of that. I do stay synched with
Ancestry but don’t know fi that can be done with MyHeritage. I stay synched
because sometimes it is easier to maneuver in my tree there so UI input my data
then synch to FTM. Works fine. Hope my experiences help you to decide to leave
Ancestry.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Holiday Sale (through Dec. 26th)

2019-12-25 Thread Bill Ricardo
Merry Christmas!

I know this may be a bit outside of the parameters of your regular purview,
but I am hoping y'all can provide some valuable guidance.

I have thus far submitted DNA tests to both ancestry.com and
FamilyTreeDNA.com and I have obtained further YDNA and MtDNA results
(haplogroups G-M201 and K1a4a, respectively) from the latter. I have
further shared data with MyHeritage.com and GEDMatch. Up until now I have
used ancestry.com as my primary tree building platform but I discovered a
few months ago that the 1,000 or so photos I had uploaded there last year
at this time had disappeared from the various family member profiles and
they, ancestry.com, were initially unable to explain why. Since that
first revelation, they have responded to me via email for additional data
from me about my tree, such as sending them screen shots and the like.
Frankly, I don't wish to commit to that much time to reconstruct the info I
had loaded to the site over what easily took me dozens of hours to
generate. My thought now is that I should cancel my subscription with
ancestry.com and rebuild my extended tree with My Heritage.

My question is can My Heritage.com provide the same or comparable level of
info that I was getting from ancestry.com if I subscribe to their
"Complete" service level?

Any assistance/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Obrigado/Mahalo/Thanks,
Bill Ricardo

Sorry to hijack this thread.

Rob, do you have an ancestor from the Azores that came to South Australia?

I have not been able to find much information about arrivals into South
Australia from the Azores. My ancestor arrived about 1873, and we do not
know what area of the Azores he was from.

Thanks,
Sonya.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's (American) Thanksgiving Sale (through Nov. 28)

2019-11-01 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists)

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has announced a sale for the month of November, in
honor of American Thanksgiving. NOTE: The sale ends on American
Thanksgiving, on Thursday, November 28th at 11:59 pm Pacific Time (or maybe
Central Time. Just order before then and we won't have any problems)!

The sale prices are in USD. Add $12.95 S anywhere in the world (includes
return postage for U.S. residents).

Family Finder $59 (regularly $79).
Y-DNA 37 $99 (regularly $169)
Y-DNA 111 $199 (regularly $359)
Big Y-700 $399 (regularly $649)
Full Mitochondrial Sequence (mtDNA) $139 (regularly $199)

Buying 2 or more products? It's $9 off when you bundle!

Upgrades are available for most Y-DNA levels and for mtDNA to Full
Mitochondrial Sequence. The list is long and if you want to know, you can
either email me or put the item in your Shopping Cart to see the discount.

Just getting into DNA and don't know where to start? Purchase Family Finder
for $59 USD. It covers ALL your lines back about 200 years from the birth
of the testee. Have a specific problem? Y-DNA or mtDNA may be able to help
if you test the right person. Just ask one of us administrators before
ordering.

For one marriage it is my GGG grandmother that had had 14 children from
1820 to 1846 with no twins.

If "one wife" means one woman, it would be my wife's great grandmother who
had 18 kids. Nine from 1891 to 1904 with her first husband. Then another
9 with her second husband from 1906 to 1918. No twins. I do not have all
of these in my program so I guess I can't count them.

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) is having a sale in honor of Mother's Day in
America. This sale ends Monday, May 13 at 11:59 pm PDT.

Family Finder was $79 and is on sale for $59.

There's a savings too if you are ordering both for the same person.

the bottom of the pedigree chart.

If you are an existing customer and wish to add on a test of a different
type, log into your DNA page with your kit number and order from there.

If you are a new customer or are ordering for someone else who has never
tested with FTDNA, order through one of the group projects below:

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2019-03-28 Thread leonor . bertoni
I seem to remember someone asking about last names on FTM and some
instructions being given. I have, accidentally, found some other usual
information that I do not think was included at the time. If this is all
stuff that is already well know, I apologize.

It was mentioned before that you need to put backslashes around the last
name on names that have da, do, de so that it uses only the name after the
da, do, de as the last name Joao da Costa, I would enter Joao da /Costa/.
You can also put it at the end of the name to show that there isn't a last
name, for example; Maria de Jesus, I enter Maria de Jesus // this keeps the
whole thing as a first name. This saves me from going back and editing all
the "de something" names.
It does not matter where the name is, if you put the backslashes around it,
it automatically becomes a last name, this is useful if there is a known
"apelido". For example; Joao Soares Manteiga, I know that Manteiga was an
apelido but sometimes it is used as a last name by some of his relatives. I
enter it as Joao /Soares/ Manteiga. This will sort the name by Soares not
by Manteiga, but Manteiga will still show.
I have had a situation where I uploaded my FTM tree to Ancestry and all my
ancestors come up as "living" because there isn't a "deceased" option on
FTM. I now just enter "unknown" in the death field. This marks them all
deceased on Ancestry.

(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes lists)

I went to Family Tree DNA's Administrator conference in Houston, Texas,
this past weekend. I will posting a few summaries throughout this week
about what took place.

Typically, this conference is held in November, and typically, they start
the Holiday sale then or a couple of weeks after. The conference had to be
moved to March and the holidays are definitely NOT around the corner, but
they did a mini sale anyways. It is good for the following products only,
though March 31, 2019 at 11:59 pm PDT.

All prices in United States Dollars (USD)

Family Finder: Regularly $79 with $30 off. Use code: GGC19FF
Y-DNA 37: Regularly $149 with $50 off. Use code: GGC19Y37
Y-DNA 67: Regularly $248 with $70 off. Use code; GGC19Y67
Y-DNA 111: Regularly $339 with $70 off. Use code: GGCY111
Big-Y 700: Regularly $649 with $200 off. Use code: GGC19BIGY
(Note: If you did BigY-500, the upgrade price is $179).
MtDNA Full Sequence: Regularly $199 with $50 off. Use code: GGC19MTFULL

If you are an existing customer, log into your account, look towards the
upper right corner where your name is, and click on Add-ons and Upgrades to
select a different type of DNA testing.

If you are ordering for a relative who has never tested before, or yourself
(if you have never tested before), order through the Group Project here:
Azores: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=AzoresIslands
Madeira: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=MadeiraPortugal
Cape Verde: https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=CapeVerde

Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's St. Patrick's Day sale ending March 17 (no need to be Irish)

2019-03-17 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists)

Today is the last day to get $20 USD off of Family Finder at Family Tree
DNA (regularly $79 USD and on sale for $59 USD. Add $12.95 S to each kit).

For a NEW customer (you have never tested or you are testing someone who
has never tested with FTDNA) order here:

Azores: https://t2m.io/wLGukUji
Madeira: https://t2m.io/X2qQzwPS

If you are an EXISTING FTDNA customer, log into your page with your kit
number and code, and order that way.

The past 4 or so years, FTDNA has also had a DNA sale in honor of DNA Day -
the discovery of DNA. This year, DNA Day is April 25th, so they *could*
have a small sale around that weekend. Just because they have in the past
does not mean that they will this year. Also, I have no advance knowledge
of what types of DNA tests they will put on sale.

VFSM, page 91, bottom record

This marriage does not mention that Bartolomeu Barbosa is viuvo de Maria de
Sousa, however the only Bartolomeu Barbosa that died in Vila Franca in that
time period says he left his wife Maria Rodrigues, which proves he married
twice.

Yes, Bartolomeu Barbosa & Maria de Sousa married 30 Mar 1678, but I have a
Francisco b. 18 Feb 1663 (Bartholomeu would be 5 which is impossible). I've
merged the wrong people together or I have made a really big typo on the
year. On Maria de Sousa, I have her as both Maria de Sousa and Maria de
Sousa Lima with a note saying Canto has her as Maria de Lima.

This is the screwed up work that I have, but it's gotta be wrong. I think
part of this came from Rodrigo Rodrigues' work as well.

I have Iria & Francisco from SM-VFDC.
I will now look for kids for Francisco X Iria, in SM-VFDC.

I’m searching for information on Francisco da Souza and Iria de Mello and
their daughter Marianna do Corpo Santo de Mello. Marianna married Joao da
Costa on May 18, 1755 in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel (Matriz). On her marriage
records it says she is from (or baptized in?) Matriz, but I can’t find her
birth record. Her husband Joao was born in 1735, so I was loooking around
that date. I also searched for the marriage record of Francisco and Iria but
no luck (in Matriz, but without Marianna’s birth record I can’t assume the
parents were married there). If anyone has any information I would
appreciate it.

Thanks Fernando

I just checked my files and rechecked the original records and found there
are two Francisco de Sousa's, both recorded with same parental names; that

exists somewhere.

Francisco de Sousa Vieira cc Iria de Melo, June 17- 1708

This marriage makes no reference to 'pedreiros'; and I can't find a trace
of Vieira in the lineage of Bartolomeu Barbosa (pedreiro) and Maria de Sousa

Francisco Barbosa cc Maria Ferreira de Lima, April 27- 1704.
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1670-1705/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1670-1705_item1/P143.html

It is interesting that this marriage references, the fathers on both sides
as being pedreiros, and that makes sense because they come from a line of
pedreiros.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family of Francisco da Souza and Iria de Mello

2019-02-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Fernando,

I think you are looking for Marianna under the wrong name. Francisco
marries under the name of Francisco de Souza Vieira (top right):
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1705-1743/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1705-1743_item1/P34.html

I descend from Francisco's brother (I think. I've got a merging problem).
And Iria was a typo in my computer (which I fixed). Try looking again for
your Marianna with a father of Francisco Vieira or Francisco Vieira Sousa
or Francisco Sousa Vieira. Or better yet, a Marianna born to a Francisco
Anybody with an Iria (those "I"s can look weird). Maybe he used Francisco
Barboza at Marianna's baptism. I would think the key would be Iria.

I'm going to call my cousin Shirley Allegre and tell her to log in and read
your post. Who knows if she has more on your family. Cheri

2019-02-23 Thread fpimentel4953
I’m searching for information on Francisco da Souza and Iria de Mello and their
daughter Marianna do Corpo Santo de Mello. Marianna married Joao da Costa on
May 18, 1755 in Vila Franca, Sao Miguel (Matriz). On her marriage records it
says she is from (or baptized in?) Matriz, but I can’t find her birth record.
Her husband Joao was born in 1735, so I was loooking around that date. I also
searched for the marriage record of Francisco and Iria but no luck (in Matriz,
but without Marianna’s birth record I can’t assume the parents were married
there). If anyone has any information I would appreciate it.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Census Document - Pico island - What does "Fogo" mean?

2019-01-11 Thread Mary Pimentel Wheeler
I was able to access a census document that listed one of my ancestor's and
his family - nice to have and contains good info. I can translate almost
everything, but there are places where they say a family lived at "Fogo
321, Rua do Bagacos". I think FOGO translated literally means fire, but
this appears to be a house number. Can it also mean something like house

lives?

Thanks translators!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA sale extended through THURSDAY, Jan. 3, 11:59 pm PST

2019-01-02 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists).

I shouldn't make posts when I'm tired.

Correction: The sale ends THURSDAY. So the announcement should read:

Family Tree DNA extended the holiday sale through THURSDAY, January 3rd, at
11:59 p.m. PST.

If you are ordering a different type of DNA test, log into that kit and
order an upgrade.

If you are new to DNA testing, order through one of the links below.
Azores: https://goo.gl/dtAs4j
Madeira: https://goo.gl/JVBLJV
Cape Verde: https://goo.gl/eYWXXw

If you don't have a specific genealogy problem to solve and are just
getting into DNA, order the Family Finder test (on sale for $49 USD +
$12.95 S).

Any questions, please ask away!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Holiday Sale through Dec. 31st

2018-11-27 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes)

Family Tree DNA has started their Holiday Sale which will run from now
until Dec. 31, at 11:59 PST.

Prices below are in USD. Add $12.95 shipping and handling. Includes return
postage back to the lab if you are a U.S. resident.

Family Finder, regularly $79, is $49. This tests ALL lines, back about 200
years from the birth of the testee. If the test taker was born in 1950,
their DNA goes back to about 1750. So if you have someone older, (born in
the 1930s or 1920s), test them first!

Y-DNA is also on sale. Y-DNA 37 (regularly $169 on sale for $99) or Y-DNA
67 (regularly $268 on sale for $179) is a good place to start. Y-DNA traces
a man's strict paternal line: His father's father's father's line ONLY or
the top of the pedigree chart. (Men are the ones with the Y chromosome). If
you are not a man, recruit a brother, uncle, nephew, or male cousin of the
line you want to test.

MtDNA traces everyone's strict maternal line. That's the mother's mother's
mother's line ONLY, or the bottom of the pedigree chart. It's best to get
the Full Sequence test, regularly $199 on sale for $139.

If you are an existing FTDNA customer, log into your DNA page with your kit
number and password. They will pull your sample and get to work. No
additional S charges.

If you are new to DNA testing, or ordering a DNA kit for someone who has
never tested at FTDNA, order here:

Azores: https://goo.gl/dtAs4j
Madeira: https://goo.gl/JVBLJV
Cape Verde: https://goo.gl/eYWXXw

Feel free to email with any questions you may have.

Family Finder is now $39!!! That's the lowest price EVER! They have
knocked $3 off of shipping and handling, so it's $9.95 (all this is USD).
It appears that the other sales prices have remained the same:

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's Summer Sale

2018-08-01 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes lists)

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has begun their summer sale that will run for one
month, through August 31st at 11:59 pm CDT (or maybe PDT - I'm not sure
which time zone they are using now).

If you have never taken a DNA test before and are overwhelmed, take the
Family Finder (FF) test. Test someone from the older generation (if your
parents are alive, test them first. If they are not alive, test one of
their siblings. Same for grandparents. If they are not alive, test their
siblings. If no one is alive, then you are the best candidate). It's also
good to test siblings and cousins. It "stacks the deck" in your favor and
we start to form a picture of a freguesia. It starts to cluster and when it
starts to cluster, more matches are made and the real fun begins!

If you have a specific problem and are wondering if a particular DNA test
can help you solve that problem, then Y-DNA or mtDNA may be an answer.
Email one of the admins, include a graphic of your tree with the problem
ancestor, and we'll make a recommendation for you.

I've copied the graphic below from Roberta Estes' blog, "DNA Explained."
Some abbreviations used:

Y## - Y-DNA with the number of markers tested. Right now, either Y-37 or
Y67 is fine. If Y111 is in your budget, go right ahead. You can always
start with less markers and upgrade at a future sale.

FF - Family Finder

FMS - Full Mitochondrial Sequence test. Tests all 16,000 base pairs of the
mtDNA molecule

MT - Mitochondrial - one of their lower level mtDNA tests where only
800-1500 base pairs were tested (if you are a previous customer, your page
may say "mtDNA" or "mtDNA Plus" as your previous mtDNA test).

Big Y500 - Includes deep SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) testing and
500 markers. It's more anthropology oriented at this time. The theory is
that by finding unique markers (SNP)s on the tree of mankind (haplotree)
and utilizing 500 markers, we may be able to bridge gaps where the paper
trail doesn't reach. If you are interested in this test (it's expensive),
ask one of the admins.

HOW TO ORDER:

If you are an existing customer, log into your DNA page and click the words
"Add Ons and Upgrades" towards the upper right corner:

If you are a new customer or are ordering for a relative who has never,
ever DNA tested with FTDNA before (it's a giant foam Q-tip - much easier
than saliva), order through one of the group projects here:

Azores: https://goo.gl/vTndP3

Madeira: https://goo.gl/bdPp9a

Cape Verde: https://goo.gl/xnatZn

If you have more than one ancestry, pick a project to order through and let
one of the admins know and we'll send you the instructions on how to join
the other project(s).

Sincerely, Cheri Mello (gfscherim at gmail.com), Rick Pimentel
(richard.francis.pimentel at gmail.com), Luis Beal (genealogialb at
gmail.com), Family Tree DNA Admins, volunteers (with Nancy Jean Baptiste on
vacation)

*Prices from DNA Explained blog, by Roberta Estes:*

*The Summer Sale*

Everything is on sale – literally everything. New purchases and upgrades
too.

Product bundles, already discounted, are now discounted even further during
the sale.

The sale ends on August 31st. Now is a great time to buy those kits for
your relatives and take them along to family reunions.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Search data base

2018-07-21 Thread Maria Lima
Doreen, it’s true that some people do not document and that there are errors.
I found this to be true for both Ancestry and Family search. It’s frustrating
when you research and document and someone enters incorrect info in your line
even when the documentation is right there as a “Source”.

Yes if names are duplicates, you merge them after careful review. Names can
also be unnerved if you find it’s not the same person or family. At times I
call family search library and talk to missionaries who are there to help
answer questions when you are stuck with a situation like you mentioned.
Number is upper right area.

But Sometimes I have to remind myself that these names do not belong only to
me but that these people might have descendants scattered in parts of the world
beyond what I thought.

On Ancestry i had entered names and photos and some people picked up the “leaf
hints” and adopted the photos and ancestors. But they were incorrect. I
contacted the person and told them how their ancestor was a different person
from a different island, etc. to my disappointment, the corrections were not
made. From that time forth, I did not enter more info on ancestry. Actually,
now my tree in Ancestry is private.

I do, however, enter all my info on family search.

There was a person who inserted a child who was born before the parents in one
instance and I contacted them and together we tried to find his ancestor. It
took time and a call to Salt Lake but it was corrected. At least there’s some
place to get help.

I have also connected with distant cousins who entered other parts of the
family. Pretty cool!

I have found duplicates and merged them and therefore added to a family line.
I document every name that I enter with the link to the source. Yes, it is not
required, I just feel it is the right thing to do after doing all the research.

There is a section for disagreement or questioning towards the bottom of every
name.

Yes, I would contact the person who entered incorrect info and I would ask if
they can provide document action as well. Most people want to do it right but
there will be errors. Like someone said in another email earlier, verify
everything. If it’s wrong, write in the section why it’s wrong and provide
correct source.

I don’t know if this gives you another perspective.

Best wishes,

Maria Elena Lima

People just put stuff in and if there is a 'clue' about another name to add,
they just do it without verifying. Just be careful what you add to your tree,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Search data base

2018-07-21 Thread Mary Bordi
I have seen that all the time on Ancestry. Ive looked on Family Search
because someone claimed the info was well documented but in the little
investigating I’ve done there I don’t see where it’s any better than
Ancestry. (I may be wrong!)

I hate it on Ancestry when I get a new “hint” that looks promising and then
when I look into the source it’s only someone else’s unsourced tree.

It’s great that we have the ability to look up the baptisms, weddings and
obits in the original documents from the Azores and like Doreen I have
found dates in other’s trees to be wrong. I have seen this mostly when I’m
investigating what may be a DNA link. Some of those trees are not well
sourced.

Thank you for the insight. This is how misinformation continues to get spread.
I need new leads to trace so I will use what I can for a new direction in my

These entries are put in by many people and if they are not really
genealogists, they just copy and paste what they find on other databases like
Ancestry.com. You have to do what you always should do and that's verify
everything!  Unless it is your ancestor and you know for sure the correct dates
and have documentation, I wouldn't do anything. Most of these people could care
less if the info is correct they just collect names and won't respond to you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA Father's Day sale through June 18th

2018-06-04 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and IslandRoutes lists)

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) is having a sale in honor of Father's Day in
America. Anyone, anywhere can take advantage of these prices.

Don't know where to start or just getting into DNA for genealogy?
Order Family Finder for $59 USD (+$12.95 S).

Have a specific male relative in mind and need his father's father's
father's line?
Order one of the Y-DNA tests: Y-DNA 37 for $129, Y-DNA 67 for $219, or
Y-DNA 111 for $299.

Big Y or Big 500 Y (or whatever they are renaming it) is on sale for $499.

Some bundles are on sale as well (Y-DNA with Family Finder). I also have
the code for mtDNA that was from the genealogy conference this past
weekend. I won't publicly post that since it was for conference attendees,
but will share with you in a private email.

If you are an EXISTING FTDNA customer, go to www.ftdna.com and log into
your account (or the account that you manage) and click the blue Upgrade
button in the upper right corner to add on a different type of test.

If you are NEW to FTDNA or are testing a NEW person who has not DNA tested
before, order through one of the links below.
Azores: https://goo.gl/r7TnP8
Madeira: https://goo.gl/QMJwuL
Cape Verde: https://goo.gl/7sHPVQ

Sale ends Monday, June 18th, 11:59 pm PDT.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2018-05-17 Thread luiznoia
I've been using the FTM 2005 version since it's release. I recently bought
the 2017 .

Not a Fan. A waste of $79. Very difficult to navigate and I feel poorly
designed.

The only improvement was the ability to create a PDF that was lacking in
the 2005.

I don't want to link every tree I have to Ancestry, so they can throw a
thousand useless "hints" at me.

I'm back to using 2005 for my daily work.

As for a recommendation, you will have to get what you like and what

You didn't say what FTM version you had. Kathy Cardoza evaluated one of the

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) Valentine Sales extended through February 18th

2018-02-15 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes)

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) extended their Valentine Day sale through Sunday,
February 18th, at 11:59pm CST. Family Finder is on sale for $59 USD. Some
bundles are on sale as well (Y-DNA with Family Finder or mtDNA with Family
Finder).

For those who missed the original email and how to order, here it is again:

With the Family Finder test, you get your matches within the FTDNA
database, your ethnicity ESTIMATES, your ancient origins, a chromosome
browser, and parental matching!

FTDNA also has projects. So we have Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde. You
also have access to project admins who are volunteers. Many times we can
answer your question quicker than Customer Service. Also, as we pull
together the results of the project members, we are starting to patterns or
clusters form. We may be able to tell you which family clusters you are
related to.

If you have ordered a Y-DNA test or an mtDNA test, log into your FTDNA page
with your kit number and password and click the blue Upgrade button in the
upper right corner.

If you would like to test and have never ordered before (you are a
brand-new customer), use the corresponding link below to order. If you have
ancestry in multiple regions, we'll get you into the other projects as
well. Just order through one of them to start (Yes, FTDNA ships worldwide.
It's $12.95 USD for S).

New Customers order here:

It's all a random shuffle. Some siblings inherit more than one sibling.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder Matches Question

2018-01-02 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
The brother and sister inherited their DNA from the same parents but because of
the way DNA works they did not receive the same DNA from each parent. The
Brother may have received 55% from his father and 45% from his mother while his
sister may have received 45% from her father and 55% from her mother. They are
still brother and sister. Now they both take a Family Finder DNA test and the
both get a match with Mr. Y. The brother matches him with 257 cm and the sister
matches him with 117 cm. This is because the brother inherited more of the DNA
that matches Mr. Y and the sister less. This is because siblings do not receive
the same DNA and the same snips from their parents unless they are identical
twins.

Until you can identify a common ancestor you will not know whether Mr. Y
matches the father or the mother unless you have tested enough of the family to
have the Parental matching feature at FTDNA identify which parental line of the
brother and sister he is related to. Just because he matches the brother with
257 cm does not mean it is the fathers line he could have inherited that from
the mother.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA Reduced Shipping ends Friday (but don't wait that late)!!

2017-12-13 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes)

Family Tree DNA has their Holiday Sale going full steam ahead!

Through this Friday, December 15th, at 11:59 pm, they have reduced their
shipping. So if you want to take advantage of that pricing you will need to
order before the deadline.

And if you need a coupon, please ask me on Thursday or Friday morning. I'm
gone from 12 noon Pacific Time and won't be home for about 9 hours. I will
have some down time in between, but the FTDNA web site is not mobile
friendly, so you may not get the coupon you need. So ask me now or on
Thursday and no later than Friday morning.

(All the people who are sending in the coupons...THANKS!!)

Thanks, Cheri Mello, Family Tree DNA Admin (volunteer)
