I found a large flock (40 or so) Evening Grosbeaks that landed atop a tall
spruce on the Hammond Hill side of Irish Settlement Rd about 10:15 this
morning. This was between Hammond Hill Rd and the Park Preserve.

A flock of about 30 Common Redpolls continues to associate with the growing
Snow Bunting flock on Mt Pleasant Rd this morning. They all were in the weedy
field opposite the communications tower, both around 10:30 when I first saw
them and around 11:30 when I returned. Basically the same spot as

I saw a flock of 7 Eastern Meadowlarks flying and landing in one of the fields
on the north side of Mt Pleasant Rd (east end) on my walk earlier this morning.
Later, a flock of 30-ish of what I'm going to call Horned Larks based on their
calls.
And one female Evening Grosbeak was around the

I headed up to Aurora this morning early hoping to find photographable
Red-breasted Mergansers near the boathouse.
En route, just south of the ex-Triangle Diner (about 7:30 am), I passed a
pake-breasted raptor in a tree, too big for a kestrel, too small for a buteo,
so I back up and identified
Jeff's Northern Shrike was still in at Landon Road around 4:00pm when I watched
it for 20 minutes or so. Far off the road in a shrubby field just SE of the
Landon/Slaterville Road junction. Too far for photos, but a cool bird to watch
nonetheless! And the lone Snow Bunting was foraging along

About half an hour ago, a Pine Siskin sat up high in a tree over my yard,
calling for several minutes, then flew up circling around a couple of times,
before heading off SE (toward Yellow Barn forest maybe?).

I'd say it is a Virginia Rail chick. Gallinule/coot chicks have red bills, this
one looks to have a whitish bill with maybe a black band on it which would make
it a Virginia Rail.

The Red-tailed Hawks that have nested on the cliff face in the gorge on the NW
side of Cornell Campus are still on eggs. I was lucky enough to witness an
incubation exchange this morning during which the two eggs were visible. Can't
remember when they were first reported on the nest
I drove the backroads around the Tompkins Co. Airport this morning, to see what
birds were around in the snow. Many birds were foraging along the roadsides.

Recovering from the flu, I tottered up Mt Pleasant Rd this afternoon around
2:30. The south wind was intense and few birds were in evidence. But a familiar
chittering call caught my ear from on high...Mt Pleasant's first Tree Swallow
of the season!

While I was driving over Mt Pleasant this am around 8:00-ish, I was excited to
see an Eastern Meadowlark flying over the road. It landed on the north side of
the road just a short way up from the Mineah Rd junction.

Salt Point has become a popular spot for birds, birders, and
Driving home an hour or so ago, I was nearing the junction of Baker Hill and Mt
Pleasant roads when I saw a Red-tailed Hawk circling over some tall conifers
carrying a stick in its talons. Suddenly it swooped down and disappeared
presumably into one of the trees, but I couldn't relocate it.
At least one Red-winged Blackbird male singing in the mini-wetland around the
parking lot at the Lab of Ornithology an hour ago.

I took a scouting trip to Stewart Park this morning, 8:30-9:15-ish.
Although I was mostly after mergansers, I was thrilled to get a great view of a
Peregrine Falcon perched in a large willow on the eastern edge of the swan pen.
Other delights included a pair of Eastern Bluebirds checking out

Hi all,
The corn stubble field just west of the radio tower on Mt Pleasant Rd had a
flock of 30-ish Horned Larks foraging among numerous pigeons, crows, and Canada
Geese this morning, around 10:15. And closer to the observatory, six Snow
Buntings were foraging along the roadside.
