the season.” I was watching from one of the green Stewart Pk. bridges for an 
hour yesterday, and there was a bird presumed female at this nest the entire 
time. She called a lot, and twice the male came in with the remains of a fish, 
first time he landed, second time he hovered over the nest but didn’t land.

Yesterday I visited Lighthouse Point Natural Area, aka Jetty Woods. As I walked 
past Newman Golf Course I noticed one possible reason I had not any Osprey at 
the nest platform at the NW corner of the golf course as I viewed it from 
across Cayuga Inlet near the boat ramp at Allan H Treman State Marine Park. An 
Osprey was standing on the east side of the platform, and the tall pile of 
sticks forming the nest might have blocked the view!

The maximum number of Ospreys I saw at once, looking across Cayuga Inlet toward 
the marina was 3 in the air.

Looking from the golf course I didn’t see anyone at the nest along Fall Creek 
near the green suspension bridges. But that was just a brief observation. Maybe 
that’s not enough this early in the season.

Awhile ago I said how the nest at Union Field in Cass Park was occupied by a 
pair of Ospreys. Then, every time I’ve gone past since, no one has been on the 
nest, including this afternoon as I walked past going north along the Cayuga 
Waterfront Trail in Cass Park. But just north of Linderman Creek I saw an 
Osprey to the north hovering above Cayuga Inlet. This Osprey turned and began 
flying toward Union Field as another Osprey flew south over the Inlet to join 
the first. They circled close over the Union Field nest and alit there, one on 
the nest and the other on the perch. It was a quiet statement. We are still 
here, in this together.

I turned around and could see the NW golf course nest in the distance. 
Binoculars did not reveal any Osprey on that nest or platform, but then an 
Osprey flew into view and alit higher in an adjacent tree. Again that’s 3 at 
the same time, in places where I expected them, and it suggests to me that 
those Ospreys are claiming those nests, not simply flying around and trying out 
different nests.

A pair of Fish Crows also seems to have taken up residence on the Osprey nest 
pole at the west side of Stewart Park, next to Fall Creek. It will be 
interesting to see what happens once the Osprey pair arrives! I did see one 
Osprey along the creek this morning, but none at the nest sites yet.

[cayugabirds-l] Woozy Waxwings, anyone?

Hi birders,
Has anyone noticed any spots locally where waxwings have been showing effects 
of feeding on fermented berries recently? I have a photo client who has 
requested footage of this behavior, which would likely be the waxwings on the 
ground acting disoriented from ingesting alcohol.
Would appreciate any leads. The most likely spots would be crabapple tree s 
that still have fruit on them.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins!

A flock of about 20 Pine Siskins arrived in my Ringwood Rd backyard just now. 
Currently all over the feeders and on the ground underneath. I'd been hearing 
them in the neighborhood but this is the first I've seen them too.

I also had a pair in my yard yesterday. At first both were foraging on dead 
trees, but then one found a patch of poison ivy and was meticulously was 
picking individual berries off the vine. Very much surprised me, as I wouldn’t 
have guessed berries as a food source for woodpeckers. However they are a 
native source of late-winter food for birds!

[cayugabirds-l] Swamp Sparrow

A Swamp Sparrow has joined the chorus of birds (and frogs) in the beaver 
pond/meadow next to my property.
And the local Carolina Wrens have ignored all the other reasonable nesting 
sites around the property, choosing instead to build inside the (closed) lid of 
our propane tank!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Not your typical Canada Goose nest

Starting a decade or so ago, Canada Geese have often usurped Osprey nests atop 
tufa towers at Mono Lake in California. Usually the goslings have fledged by 
the time the Osprey are really serious about nesting, so it’s not a long term 
problem and does not (I think) lead to a decline in Osprey reproductive success.

One sign of Canada Geese overpopulationg an area is that they start nesting off 
the ground... that's when they start nesting on cliffs, Osprey platforms,

A few days ago, Carol and I took a walk on the south rim trail at Taughannock 
S.P.   Not too far from the parking lot off Jacksonville Road, she spotted a 
Canada Goose, nesting in an unexpected location (to put it mildly).   Here,

So I'm wondering if this bird might have been raised by peregrines.  (Hey, if 
humans can be raised by wolves...)But seriously: Have any of you observed

[cayugabirds-l] Mt.Pleasant bird sightings

Hi everyone,
I check out the fields at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd twice today.
Once by car: I stopped to look and listen for Horned Larks. Nothing. Usually by 
now, if they're there, I would have noticed their display flights high in the 
sky over the fields.
But I DID notice an Eastern Meadowlark singing from, the ground.
Three American Kestrels on the wires and perched on poles over the fields.
Back near home around 11:30 am a Red-shouldered a hawk was calling loudly as it 
circled high above. Last I saw it was headed toward Laura's place  A 
first-year male Purple Finch at my feeder.

Then this afternoon, Mt Pleasant Road on foot. Still no Horned Larks. But an 
Eastern Meadowlark singing from high in a tree by the observatory. A female 
kestrel suddenly flying from (out of...I think) a nest box, either already 
nesting in there or checking it out.
As others have noted there's been a sudden influx of Dark-eyed Juncos...now 
many trilling away in concert with the spring peepers. Delightful!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Snow Buntings

10:30 this morning, a flock of a couple of hundred Snow Buntings was flying 
around the fields at the east end of Mt Pleasant Road. They were also seen by 
Steve Fast and me on Sunday morning.
There's not much food up there since the fields were mowed so closely and there 
are very few weeds, so I can't imagine the buntings will stick around.

[cayugabirds-l] Sounds of spring

On this gloomy, foggy day, I've been delighted to hear various sounds of spring 
around my Ringwood Road property: the soft cooing of a Mourning Dove, a singing 
Carolina Wren, trilling from a Dark-eyed Junco, and some distant drumming from 
either Downy or Hairy Woodpecker. Tufted Titmice and Black-capped Chickadees 
have been singing a while now.
Haven't heard a cardinal yet but I bet that will happen soon.

[cayugabirds-l] American Tree Sparrow flock: Mt Pleasant Rd

Hi everyone,

A flock of a couple of dozen or so American Tree Sparrows was foraging near the 
roadside in the mixed switchgrass/weeds field on the northeast side of the road 
and just downhill from the observatory, around 3pm today. I tried hard to turn 
them into Common Redpolls but they would not cooperate! Tree sparrows are 
pretty cool anyway!

at 9:20 but flock has flown back toward the beaver swamp behind my property.

[cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake Bald Eagle

With local trails becoming snow-free on this warm day, my new knee and I 
checked out the Dryden Lake linear trail this afternoon. The trail was quite 
muddy and the birds scanty, but the highlight was a very handsome adult Bald 
Eagle circling over the south end of the lake, near a stand of conifers where I 
believe they have nested for several years. The magnificent bird then landed at 
the top of a tall, leafless tree allowing a great view.

And like others I heard my first Killdeer of the year.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk - and Mt Pleasant!

Interesting. I had one on Mt Pleasant Road around 10 am today, directly 
opposite the observatory. Could be the same one wandering the area, I suppose.

First I've seen one this year, and indeed first one on Mt Pleasant for several 
years although they used to be winter regulars up here.

For anyone driving up the east side of the lake today, be sure to check the 
south end of lake road - downhill from the winery. I had two, possible three, 
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS fly over the car. Two of them landed alongside the road, 
foraging in the roadside grass. They were not shy and continued to move uphill 
as I watched for a few minutes, about twenty feet away.

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern Bluebirds!

Hi all,
Such a gift this morning: 3 Eastern Bluebirds feeding in my berry-laden 
winterberry shrubs in the yard! I rarely get them up here on Mt Pleasant in the 
winter, last time was more than a decade ago. Two males and a female. Hope they 
return tomorrow when I'll be sitting in the photo blind I've just set up by the 
winterberry.

Thanks for sending this. As a big fan of all things jay, I found it interesting 
until I realized it is an example of the effects of climate change on bird 
populations. Then suddenly the article became sobering...and even more so when 
I followed another link on the same page "Goodbye California..."

With all our rain, we are somewhat removed from what's happening out west. But 
read the article and you'll learn that, even after the rain that is following 
CA's devastating fires, the oak woodlands and savannahs that have been burned 
will likely NOT grow back. They're gone. That habitat is GONE! A totally 
depressing view of the world that's rapidly approaching us. Sorry to be a 
downer, but it's realityAnd of course we all know this...

AllAboutBirds site, and I remember working on that favorite birding spots

their management policies and practices. I have visited Bosque numerous times 
between 1994 and 2018 and the difference is striking. And a number of the staff

from the Lab. It would be interesting to see which favorite spots the current 
staff members would come up with!

This conversation about New Mexico birding reminded me about a list of favorite 
U.S. birding destinations compiled by Lab of O folks that used to link off one 
of the Lab websites (it was either All About Birds or the main Lab website; I 
can’t remember which).  The link was labeled “Where to go birding” or something 
along those lines.  Maybe it still exists, but I can’t seem to find it.  The 
list was broken down by state and included Bosque del Apache NWR.  I recall 
that Marie Read contributed that destination and mentioned photographing 
Sandhill Cranes there.  This resource is also where I discovered another 
birding gem, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida.  I recall that Wesley 
Hochachka contributed that one.



Anyway, this was a wonderful resource for learning about birding hotspots 
throughout the country.  Do any Lab of O folks know if this list is still 
available?

On my walk up Mt Pleasant Rd just now, I greatly enjoyed a sizable movement of 
Monarch butterflies. I counted 20 in about an hour, which might not seem a lot 
but it’s more than I have seen on Mt Pleasant for years. Often they seemed to 
appear in small groups, as if they had just taken flight from the numerous 
clumps of goldenrod and aster in the fields and along the road. Others, though, 
I noted flying up high, helped on their way south by the NW breeze.
During the same walk I witnessed a behavior I hadn’t seen before: a small flock

[cayugabirds-l] American Kestrel lineup!

Hi Cayugabirders,
The annual build-up of American Kestrels on Mt Pleasant is happening! Location 
is the dirt road (recently graded and improved) tht heads north from Mt 
Pleasant Rd to the tall communication towers. I counted 11 kestrels, 9 of which 
were lined up along one span of wire! They're mostly feasting on the crickets 
and grasshoppers that emerge from the fields.

Re catching a heron, I’d add do protect your OWN eyes too. Wear safety glasses 
or something. A stab from a heron can take out your eye. Advice from zoo 
keepers.

Cornell Vet School wildlife clinic.
IF you can safely catch GBH (safe for you & the  bird)- i suggest it wrap 
carefully in light blanket to keep wings folded. Cover/wrap face & eyes with 
lightweight cloth. This helps calm the bird.
I don’t know if catching a still-flying GBH is possible for an amateur!
I don’t think i would try!

Call # in this link, bring bird to them, someone will meet you there; usually 
small animal clinic opposite Cornell B-parking lot.

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak!

A male Evening Grosbeak is currently sharing my backyard sunflower seed feeder 
with a Purple Finch. It’s lime green bill is stunning. A surprise in any year, 
but especially so in Spring.

[cayugabirds-l] American Crow "snow-bathing"!

Hi everyone,

Earlier today, while it was still cloudy and drizzly, I was watching an 
American Crow in the snow-covered field opposite my house do something I'd 
never seen before. While it was walking along, several times it squatted down 
into the snow and shuffled its wings just like birds do when they're bathing in 
water. Sometimes it also dug into the snow with its bill as if to loosen the 
snow around it. Then it preened a bit then repeated the process, maybe 7 or 8 
times in the space of a few minutes, before finally flying off with another 
individual.

Very cool behavior! Has anyone seen them do this before?

Yes it’s a young Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, molting into adult plumage. An adult 
male would have a red throat, so I’d guess this was a young female.

Hello, This bird has been coming to our feeders in Syracuse, alone, for the 
last week or so. Is it a juvenile male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker? Otherwise, we 
are stuck for identification.

We've never seen one here before. We live in a residential neighborhood in the 
city.

Wish we weren't dealing with the pandemic or we would invite you all over for a

Redpolls (about 20) feeding in the tall line of (Speckled) Alder trees along Rt 
366 just adjacent to the Cornell Orchards. I was actually scouting for 
waxwings, checking the various crabapple trees around the area and I was 
sitting in Cornell's A-Lot parking lot, when I noticed these little birds 
flitting around in the alders across the road.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Redpolls flock on alders

This morning between about 9:15-10:00, I watched and video'd a flock of Common 
Redpolls (about 20) feeding in the tall line of (Speckled) Alder trees along Rt 
366 just adjacent to the Cornell Orchards. I was actually scouting for 
waxwings, checking the various crabapple trees around the area and I was 
sitting in Cornell's A-Lot parking lot, when I noticed these little birds 
flitting around in the alders across the road.

They have since flown and I could not relocate them, but it's worth a heads-up 
to birders to check these trees and other redpoll natural foods, such as other 
alder species, birches, plus weedy areas of fields. There are still a few 
redpolls being seen occasionally in the fields along Mt Pleasant Rd but they 
are nowhere near as consistent as they were there 2 years ago.

I will post some video when I get the chance to process it.

Dam

Whereas there has been a dam at Dryden Lake Dryden, NY since circa 1801; and

Whereas the body of water known as Dryden Lake, created by the building of the 
dam, has provided numerous benefits to the citizens of the Town of Dryden and 
surrounding areas for over two hundred years, with its benefits changing and 
expanding over two plus centuries; and

Whereas the lake originally provided power for a sawmill and ice harvesting, it 
created additional waterfowl and wildlife habitat that has made the lake today 
a birding “hot spot” with 228 species observed, providing migratory bird rest 
areas and nesting and foraging habitat (Canada geese, ducks, loons, herons, 
Bald Eagles) as well as habitat for numerous mammals, amphibians, turtles, etc; 
and

Whereas Dryden Lake and its surrounding areas provides many forms of year round 
recreation for town and surrounding area residents, such as fishing, ice 
fishing, hiking, jogging, dog walking, biking, cross country skiing, snow 
shoeing (on the Jim Schug trail), kayaking, canoeing, ice skating, hunting, 
trapping, bird watching, picnicking, etc; and

Whereas Dryden Lake and its surrounding natural areas are an important 
educational resource, being used both for formal classes in ecology and natural 
resources (Cornell University) and informal education of everyone from young 
children to lifelong education participants; and

Whereas the Town of Dryden currently provides a community park at the Lake 
under an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental 
Conservation; and

Whereas the Dryden Lake park is a popular location for many community events 
with the lake being the center piece for those events; and

Whereas the lake has a rich historical and cultural value to the citizens of 
the town; and

Whereas the NYS DEC is considering the removal of the dam and the elimination 
of Dryden Lake in the form it has existed for over two hundred years; and

Whereas the Dryden Town Board has requested a recommendation from the 
Conservation Board on the future of the Dryden Lake dam and ultimately Dryden 
Lake itself.

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Town of Dryden Conservation Board 
recommends to the Dryden Town Board that the latter take all necessary action 
to ensure the preservation of a dam and the body of water known as Dryden Lake, 
maintaining its current contribution to the recreational and ecological 
benefits provided to the Dryden community.

fishing, hiking, jogging, dog walking, biking, cross country skiing, snow 
shoeing (on the Jim Schug trail), kayaking, canoeing, ice skating, hunting, 
trapping, bird watching, picnicking, etc; and

Whereas Dryden Lake and its surrounding natural areas are an important 
educational resource, being used both for formal classes in ecology and natural 
resources (Cornell University) and informal education of everyone from young 
children to lifelong education participants; and

Whereas the Town of Dryden currently provides a community park at the Lake 
under an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental 
Conservation; and

Whereas the Dryden Lake park is a popular location for many community events 
with the lake being the center piece for those events; and

Whereas the lake has a rich historical and cultural value to the citizens of 
the town; and

Whereas the NYS DEC is considering the removal of the dam and the elimination 
of Dryden Lake in the form it has existed for over two hundred years; and

Whereas the Dryden Town Board has requested a recommendation from the 
Conservation Board on the future of the Dryden Lake dam and ultimately Dryden 
Lake itself.

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Town of Dryden Conservation Board 
recommends to the Dryden Town Board that the latter take all necessary action 
to ensure the preservation of a dam and the body of water known as Dryden Lake, 
maintaining its current contribution to the recreational and ecological 
benefits provided to the Dryden community.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk

Around 11 this morning, I watched a Rough-legged Hawk circling over the fields 
along Mt Pleasant Road, before making its way slowly westward toward the 
observatory. Hope it sticks around...it's been a number of years since this 
species spent the winter on Mt Pleasant.

Also, yesterday around the same time, I glimpsed what I presume was the Common 
Redpoll flock foraging far on the south side of the Mt Pleasant weedy field 
(south side of the road)

Around 11:30 this morning (Sunday) Gladys Birdsall and I watched a large of 
flock of (Common) Redpolls flying around the fields just east of the towers on 
Mt Pleasant Road. She estimated 200 birds and I agree. More than there have

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Common Redpolls

Around 11 this morning, I caught sight of a largish flock of Common Redpolls 
swirling over the clover field along the dirt road to the communication towers 
on Mt Pleasant Rd. This is essentially where Gladys Birdsall first found them a 
couple of weeks ago. I go up there most days, and while the redpolls are not 
consistently visible, I bet they're around.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls...

Around 3pm I and several others saw a/the redpoll flock flying overhead a 
couple of times, at one point landing to feed on weeds in the very field where 
they spent several weeks two years ago. This is the overgrown field just before 
the crest of the first hill as you travel west up Mt Pleasant Rd,on the south 
side of the road. So cool to see them back again and hear those chittery calls!

Every time I take my daily walk up Mt Pleasant Rd I wonder whether this will be 
the day when finally the late summer kestrels will have left for the year...but 
no! There were twelve American Kestrels arrayed along the wires on the dirt 
road to the radio tower a couple of hours ago!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant American Kestrels

Hi Cayugabirders,

The annual late-summer build-up of (presumably pre-migration) American Kestrels 
has begun on Mount Pleasant. I counted 11 kestrels yesterday afternoon, and saw 
at least 9 this afternoon. You can see them perched on the wires and utility 
poles along the dirt road to the large communication towers on the north side 
of Mt Pleasant Road. On breezy days they often hover over the fields before 
plunging down after prey. Wonderful to watch.

No mention of larvae. I can't quite tell what kind of larvae they are from the

notice anything like this obvious new hatch of larvae on the 3 boxes I observed

Hi All,
I was able to watch the Prothonotary Warbler on Armitage Rd. For.  an extended 
period of time. In the morning it was mostly foraging and singing as well as 
displaying periodically. Then in mid day, it started bringing moss into the 
nest box. I was wondering if this is the male making moss offerings. I never 
saw more than one bird together that day.  Occasionally it would leave with a 
pale green larvae in it’s peak. After looking at photos when I got home, I 
noticed that there was a whole area of larvae around the nest box hole. Someone 
else who was observing at a different angle thought it was adhering insects to 
the box. I only could see the bird bringing back moss, but can anyone explain 
the larvae at the nest hole? There are a few photos

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt loons, Caspian tern...

I took a walk at Salt Pt this morning. Highlights were 2 Common Loons foraging 
not too far from shore and a Caspian Tern on one of the sand banks...which duly 
pulled up a "rare bird, please describe ID" message on eBird! I guess we don't 
usually see them there in spring, mostly in late summer post-breeding.

Yes, I am actually atlasing using the eBird app on my phone! Proof that old 
fossils can learn new tricks!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rd. Red-tailed Hawks with nest material!

On my walk up Mt Pleasant Rd this afternoon I watched a Red-tailed Hawk pair 
circling over Gladys Birdsall's woods, a couple of minutes later one of them 
came cruising low over the woods with a trailing clump of grasses in its 
talons...nesting material. It headed slowly west and disappeared behind the 
trees which makes me think the possible nest might be a bit beyond Gladys' 
property. First I've seen evidence of nesting in this spot although I have 
often seen RTHA there, usually in winter. I HAVE seen evidence of RTHA nesting 
at the junction of Mt Pleasant Rd and Baker Hill Rd, but maybe this is a 
different pair.

This afternoon, Thursday 19 March 2020, traveling along Snyder Rd. at Ithaca 
Tompkins Airport to listen for meadowlarks singing.

We did hear two different singing birds, and saw one singing from the airport 
fence.

Then, the airport police caught up with us and wanted to know what we were 
doing! I told them we were out to listen for the beautiful song of the 
meadowlark. In the end, 6 police cars showed up (airport and county sheriff), 
writing down all my details and asking the same questions.

What a story.

In the end, the airport police said, if you give them a call beforehand and 
tell them you are coming, you are allowed to birdwatch.

But NO cameras!

I suggested to them to add that, to the NO TRESPASSING signs.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Goose island, FOY Sandhill Cranes

Took the afternoon off hoping to find the snow geese at Mucklands, but en route 
I found a/the massive snow goose island between Dean's Cove and Aurora, so I 
parked at Dean's Cove hoping to see and video a full eruption which never came 
to pass, just a couple of "minor tremors". Starting around 4pm skeins started 
departing towards the NW or WNW, which is to say, not towards the Mucklands. At 
this point, the island was stretched pretty long and thin, but still contained 
an impressive number of birds, echoing a distant cacophony.

Also had six Sandhill Cranes fly over, and a few Common Loons fishing and 
wailing in the beautiful gentle sun.

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker drumming

Hi all,

On my walk on Mt Pleasant Road this morning, around 11 I heard the drumming of 
a Pileated Woodpecker echoing from deep in the woods on the south side of the 
road. With the lengthening days, it won't be long before some of our other 
winter residents start adding to the chorus. Maybe they already are elsewhere 
in the region?
Also a lone Snow Bunting along the roadside. 'Bout time they showed up!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Golden Eagle

Hi Cayuugabirders,
This morning 10:30 ish I was walking on Mt Pleasant Rd when I noticed two 
raptors slowly approaching from the north, both soaring with a slight dyhedral 
wing shape . One was confirmed as a Turkey Vulture after it was close enough 
for me to see its red head, but the other gave me pause: very large size, no 
obviously unfeathered head, very dark overall including underneath, no white or 
light underwing pattern, not a flat enough wing position for a Bald Eagle. I 
kept it in my binocular view as it approached and finally flew directly above 
me, when I got a brief of its golden brown head/nape. So I'm calling it an 
adult Golden Eagle.

[cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush photos

The Hermit Thrush I first saw (and initially mid-identified) in my backyard a 
couple of days ago has been coming to feed on the blue "berries" on my 
scavenged eastern red-cedar branches throughout the day so I set up a blind and 
spent the afternoon photographing it.

Hi Cayugabirders,

On a walk along Long Point Road a couple of weeks ago, I came across numerous 
Eastern Red Cedar branches chopped down by, presumably, the Aurora roads dept 
to clear the roadside and left in place. The branches were loaded with berries 
so I filled the back of my car with as many as I could, and then set them up 
among the now-depleted winterberry shrubs in my backyard.

This afternoon, a Swainson's Thrush, several  House Finches and a couple of

[cayugabirds-l] Swainson's Thrush

Hi Cayugabirders,

On a walk along Long Point Road a couple of weeks ago, I came across numerous 
Eastern Red Cedar branches chopped down by, presumably, the Aurora roads dept 
to clear the roadside and left in place. The branches were loaded with berries 
so I filled the back of my car with as many as I could, and then set them up 
among the now-depleted winterberry shrubs in my backyard.

This afternoon, a Swainson's Thrush, several  House Finches and a couple of 
American Robins are eating them. Hope the thrush sticks around so I can 
photograph it tomorrow.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock and waterthrush...interesting yard birds!

Hi  everyone,

I found a couple of interesting "yard" birds as I made my way through the woods 
edge on my property to see what was around in the beaver pond next door.
First, up from the ground flew a chunky medium-sized bird which fluttered off 
twittering into the woods and landed on the ground again. Too small for a 
Ruffed Grouse (which ARE there occasionally) and wrong habitat for a snipe, so 
I'm going to call it an American Woodcock.

Second, on my way back I was brought up short by a loud ticking call and on a 
branch over the stream was a Northern Waterthrush. I do seem to have them come 
through this time of year some years, but they don't nest on the property.

Finally, another somewhat unusual bird for my yard is the Carolina Wren that's 
been around for most of this week, in fact there may be two. What an 
interesting variety of songs and calls they make! Never used to see them up 
here at this elevation, but with climate change who knows what may show up next!

And as a follow-up to my search for Caspian Terns at Myers Pt, I did find five 
of them there a couple of days ago and was able to get some photos. All adults, 
but I'm sure the fledglings will show up soon with their parents and that will 
make for some good photo ops.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt Baltimore and Orchard Orioles

Hi all,

I took a short walk around Salt Pt this morning (9-10 am) with the goal of 
checking out Myers Pt spit for Caspian Terns. None of those yet but I did see 
some cool birds, the best of which was multiple Baltimore Orioles (adult male 
and female, plus at least 4 juveniles all foraging in the same tree). Later a 
male Orchard Oriole that flew with a more olive/brown companion possibly a 
female or juvenile.
And 
Yellow Warbler
(Willow) Flycatcher
Group of drab vireos that I presume were Warbling (some checking out 
honeysuckle fruits)
2 Eastern Kingbirds
And the usual cast of geese, Mallards, gulls.

[cayugabirds-l] Mount Pleasant Bobolinks!

Around 10:30 this morning I hear my first Bobolinks of the season in the field 
overlooked by the communications tower on Mt Pleasant Rd. (Although because of 
the socked-in fog I couldn't see them).

Also, some of you will have noticed that the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd has 
sprouted 8 new utility poles where there were none before. While that has 
forever changed Mount Pleasant's "Big Sky" feel, I'm trying to stay positive in 
the hopes that now more raptors will perch there (think Rough-legs in winter 
and, who knows, maybe a SEOwl!!).

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls...singing!

Around 2:45 this afternoon, I found a flock of Common Redpolls in the trees 
above Gladys B’s house, opposite the communications tower on Mt Pleasand Rd. 
Hard to get an accurate count but I’d say 40-ish...and many were singing their 
high trilling song. Delightful! They took off further into the woods and 
disappeared.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Common Redpolls - still...

Hi everyone,

Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon there was a flock of 100 or so Common Redpolls 
over the weedy field between the radio tower on Mt Pleasant Rd and the farm in 
the dip between the hills. Later (around 3pm) I saw presumably the same flock 
in the weedy field on the easternmost hill of MT Pleasant Rd where they spent 
many weeks previously. Despite many weed stems, there are very few seeds left 
in these fields, but I am still only getting a couple of redpolls at my feeders 
each day. So the large flock must be finding plenty of wild food.

And on another topic, anyone seeing Wild Turkeys displaying yet?

Hi Marie-
Just a note of update. You can repost to Cayugabirds.
No worries. The final product will be better than what was there.

That section of Salmon Creek has not been dredged since 1997. The section above 
the railroad bridge was accomplished several years ago and Lansing Highway 
Department has not been able to get into the creek to complete the job till 
this winter due to heavy snow melts, rain events, and higher than average lake 
winter levels. This dredging project was critical because of the heavier than 
usual rain events of the last several years combined with a reduction in 
carrying capacity due to sedimentation. The water displacement caused by gravel 
bar build-up at Myers Park put Salmon Creek at high risk of stream bank breach. 
The structural damage to Myers Park from an overflow would have been truly 
astronomical.

The dredge product is required to be de-watered on site by the DEC. The piles 
should be fully removed by May, the meadow regraded, and surface soil textured 
so that replanting will be fully effective. The center of that meadow rarely 
has much milkweed and as of last dredging was never replanted thus allowing a 
great deal of weed growth, primarily Artemesia and Goldenrod.
The meadow will be reseeded promptly with a native grass and herbaceous mix.

[cayugabirds-l] Salt Point update?

Hi everyone, 
I was just at Myers and Salt Point. Salmon Creek is being dredged (from the 
Salt Point side) and there is currently a huge heap of dredged soil filling 
much of Salt Point's "bluebird meadow". The milkweed area ("Monarch 
Waystation") has been protected. Does anyone know what the ultimate fate of 
that dredged soil will be? It's currently rather shocking to see, but maybe the 
town/village of Lansing has plans to landscape and reseed?

I was going to suggest something similar to Linda: any type of conifer can 
provide shelter for birds, particularly in the cold, windy weather we've had 
over the past couple of days. I have watched birds actually going to roost (at 
dusk) in certain spruces on my property in the past.

food for thought.  I looked out this afternoon at the Cedar and it was covered 
in birds!  It looked like a birdy Christmas tree.  I counted 25 House Finches 
on the side that I could see.  There were many more birds in the trees all 
around the Cedar.  I’ve seen all my yard birds on it except for the 
woodpeckers.  I’ve yet to see a bird try to eat anything from the seed cones 
though which hang at the bottom of the ferny sprays.  Maybe they don’t know how 
to get to them.  It’s very interesting behavior for birds that never go to that 
tree.  Thanks again.

[cayugabirds-l] Aurora Redhead raft etc

Hi all,

I took a photo/birding trip to the north end of the lake this morning. The lake 
was frozen north of Union Springs, but there was open water at Mud Lock where 
around 7:45 am I found numerous Tundra Swans sleeping along the ice edge but 
uncooperative for my camera. Also several Bald Eagles, including one adult, 
cruised by. After an hour or so I decided to head back south, and just outside 
Aurora (ie north of) I screeched to a halt at the sight of a large raft of 
Redheads (with a few Ring-necks and at least 1 Canvasback) close to shore. 
Spent an hour or so capturing stills and video as they all slowly swirled 
around feeding, and at one point yet another enormous raft swam in to join 
them. A couple of thousand birds I'd guess in total. (If you go, be aware that 
the road is very narrow there...be careful of traffic)

750 images later, and no longer able to feel my fingers, I headed into Aurora 
and pulled in to the Village Park parking lot to try to rescue one of my thumbs 
from possible frostbite (!). That was quickly forgotten at the sight of several 
hundred Red-breasted and Common Mergansers spread out in long strings on the 
lake! Several other large flocks of ducks (possible Gadwall) flew past too.

Finally at Salt Point there were quite a few Common Goldeneye, another goal 
bird for me. 

(The thumb is still alive, BTW!)

There was a small (20 or so) flock of Common Redpolls near the roadside on Mt 
Pleasant Rd about 1 hour ago.
And just now in my yard, a male House Finch was softly and tentatively warbling 
his song from hidden in a shrub as the rain turns to snow!

Re. redpolls: 

The Mt Pleasant Rd redpolls were eating the seeds of various weeds in the 
field, many of which actually are introduced species. Over the past few weeks I 
have tried to identify them from the dead plant stems and seed heads...it's not 
easy. Some of them (I think) are chicory, goldenrod (native), dock (not 
burdock), plantain, hyssop, bedstraw and I'm sure there are others. 

BTW, the redpolls are now frequenting the even-weedier field immediately west 
of the white observatory building on Mt Pleasant Rd.

Are there any reports of redpolls at feeders?

Yesterday, Friday, 4 January, around 11:30am, Stewart Park was also strangely 
devoid of birds and wondered if someone came through with dogs? There were 
absolutely no Canada Geese on the lawns, but ample fresh green poop everywhere 
(as usual). I found several dozen hugging the lake shoreline from west to east 
with a few mallards, and I think I saw four sandpiper-size/shape birds flush 
and peep as they flew (not sure, did not have my binoculars with me).

Well a walk this afternoon up to the redpoll hotspot forces me to revise my 
flock size count...there were about 150 Common Redpolls up there around 2:15.

In preparation for the Christmas Bird Count next week I’ve been keeping an eye 
out for the Common Redpolls on Mt Pleasant Rd. This morning I saw them twice:

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant redpolls still there (but fewer)

In preparation for the Christmas Bird Count next week I’ve been keeping an eye 
out for the Common Redpolls on Mt Pleasant Rd. This morning I saw them twice: 
about 10:15 and just now about 12:10. They are more difficult to see with no 
snow. Two days ago I estimated 50, but today only about 25, down from 150 or so 
in recent weeks Why aren’t the others showing up at our feeders?!!

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count Jan 1st 2019 - Counters urgently needed for Area III

Hello Cayugabirders,

The local Christmas Bird Count is coming up: January 1st 2019. I am Area 
Coordinator for Area III which includes much of Dryden including Hammond Hill 
and Yellow Barn Forests and I need a few more counters to have complete 
coverage of the area. I currently have no-one covering the Village of Dryden 
and environs, so I'd be delighted to have some help. 

There are two main areas to cover:
1. The southern side of Dryden, including the village south of Rt 13, Kimberley 
Drive, Keith Lane, plus lower Beam Hill Road and other roads on the west of Rt 
38. Note that the area includes only the very western tip of Dryden Lake but 
does NOT include the section of the Dryden Lake Trail ("Jim Schug trail") 
southward along the lake. However it DOES include the section of the Jim Schug 
Trail that starts at Keith Lane and goes northward toward the village. This 
trail is likely to be snow-free and is a great spot for American Tree Sparrows 
and other species.

2. The northern side of Dryden, including the village north of Rt 13, George 
Rd, Schoolhouse Road, and roads northward to Fall Creek Rd in Freeville. A bit 
more driving than walking in this route but good for open country birds, 
waterfowl, raptors.

roster and give you more details.
