Yesterday morning, I decided to take a detour from my regular route to
work, and I turned down Halseyville Road hoping to spot the Enfield SNOWY
OWL that was recently reported. Just as I approached Iradell Road, I found
a snowy owl lying in the
Cortland County Rt 90, Tamarack Estates. 8:00 am Snowy Owl standing in
development lots. Coming from Homer on Rt 90, Tamarack Estates is a few
miles from 281, and on the right. Drive up into the development and the

was being mobbed by crows as it sat on a power pole. The bird

On NYS-31 west of the hamlet/village of Montezuma, there is a long straightaway across the mucklands (dark-soiled, low, seasonally wet farmland) from the bridge over the Seneca River to the fork where NYS-89 comes in. About halfway across on the north side of the road is an abandoned building

mentioned that in earlier years there was an actual expert there who did trap
and relocate. So what happened?

After about 15-20 minutes the owl flew off the roof of the Lansing Fire Dept.
towards the woods behind BJ's Whole Sale. About 10 people got to see it. Lifers

Authority's responsibility is safety for planes and passengers. I doubt anyone

This sounds like it may be a Short-eared Owl. Snowy Owls do not have beige or
brown on the wings. The markings are black. This seems to be a great year for
Short-eared Owl and the habitat around King Road looks good for Short-eared.

I agree with Chris T-H in welcoming reports from beyond the Cayuga Lake Basin, especially big, rare, easy-to-ID-from-a-respectful-distance birds like Snowy Owls, but also anything wild-bird-related which is unusual or interesting to you the writer/observer.I just want to set the record straight
I spoke with Steven Robinson the person who found
the Snowy Owl at the Greater Binghamton Airport
on December 23rd. He took a photo of it with his
cell phone and it is legit. See attached.
Unfortunately, he is out there often and has not seen the
bird since. I asked the airport operations
A snowy owl swooped down to ground level near the food court at the Waterloo
outlet while I was shopping. Looked mostly white. No one else even looked as I
yelled Snowy owl. Could it be the same one seen around Montezuma? It flew over
the building and I couldn't relocate it. How cool!

for a reported Snowy Owl.

morning and then in the Mucklands and the Main Pool, all without
success. The Montezuma CBC is happening today, so maybe someone will

This afternoon I took a relaxed trip up the west side of Cayuga Lake to the mucklands along NYS-31 west of the Village of Montezuma. I did not fortify myself with scrapple per Steve Fast's recommendation, but perhaps my overly-spicy Italian sausages from yesterday had some lingering effects,
Attached is a photo of the SNOWY OWL that has been seen at Charlotte Beach in
Rochester. (Charlotte is pronounced sha LOT in Rochester!)
My sister, Lynn Scott, who took the photo, walked out on the main pier to see
the Snowy Owl on the adjacent pier by the Coast Guard station.
