No 400 small blocks were put into any 68-72 Chevelles...there may have been a SB 400 in a 73-75, but I'm not sure of that either. I know the 454 was available til late 1974.
Kelly Jana Hanna

The 400 small block is not listed for 70 Chevelle. In the Chevy literature
the 400 small block was called Turbo Fire and the 400 big block was called
the Turbo Jet. The Chevy engine line up was a confusing situation in 1970.
They had a non-SS 400 330hp Chevelle engine that was really a 402.

Although the urge to cruise in a big block is great, you should resist for several reasons...the first is money. If you had the money to build or buy one and then got it out on the street, chances are you'd not have the

Generally 10.0-10.5 compression will run on 92 no porblem. I ran 11.3 to 1 with iron heads and a zero deck and it loved 92, even on 95 degree days. CC designs such as the vortecs allow about an extra .8 of a point of compression on the same octane. A 38-45 quench will also help detination. Alum
Yeah it amazing what you lose on the way to the wheels. It is also amazing how funny it is when people say they figure they have 500 rear wheel hp and then pull a 300. I'd say your numbers are pretty respectable if your car is as streetable as it sounds. It sounds like it was a fun weekend...

The secondaries on Quads are very large and are known to make the howl you are referring to by design. The 850 cfm quads (found on many 400,403, 455 olds/buick/pontiac's,and 472 500 Caddys)seem to make the most noise, but it is hard to say for sure. Holleys are designed differently and most have

Chad,
I must admit, 454's are a blast to drive. My 66 has one, with a 4spd. Wouldnt make for a very good daily driver right? Har Har Har, it is my daily driver. Yes, it gets horrible gas mileage. But how horrible depends on if you have a lead foot. Average, it gets about 7 MPG in the city. On the
Chad,
Most crate motors are already assembled. Its basically you put it in the car, and start it. Some dont come with carb's, but for the most part, a crate motor is a complete motor.

Can anyone else hear when the secondaries are opened up and the engine is

Almost all four barrels do that when the secondaries open, in fact I've never heard one that didn't (with an open element air cleaner)...I'll ask my buddy in Michigan who has the same carb and see what
Well basically... do your research. I'd really suggest finding some old school books and articles by some of the greats like Grumpy Jinkens (sp?) and Smokey Yunick. You also can ask local dyno/race motor shops. Most of those guys have seen everything and will tell you what is good and what is a

Crate motors are about the same as long blocks...some are more complete than others.

Wow, that's kinda disappointing. I've grown to love the howl of the Edelbrock. I wonder if the Demon does it.

I thought a crate motor just referred to the factor
that the motor block / head were complete and sold in a wooden crate. A crate
motor is a motor which has all the major machining completed. A motor which
usually includes the block, crank, cam, heads, but can come in more completed
stages.
NO, a crate motor is a complete almost
ready to run engine, usually minus the carb headers.

The engines actually displaced 402 cubic inches but the "SS396"
was such a recognizable name, GM kept it. The 402 came in to being in late
'69 I think replacing the ~real~ 396 cubic inch engine.

What I do to test the secondaries of the Holley is take a small paper clip
and bend it so it clips lightly on the rod that connects the vacuum diaphragm
to the secondary butterfly shaft. Clip it on the rod in a way so after a test
