Actually, as Diane pointed out, I counted wrong.
If it was a second-year bird in 2006 then it hatched in 2005, so it would be
nine years old in 2014.
But still it's still the record if accepted by the Bird Banding Lab

We banded 32 new birds of 11 different species.
We had 11 recaptures from earlier this Fall and We had good recaptures: 2

Saturday 9/29/12 was bright clear calm morning for banding at Clear Springs
Ranch (CSR).*
The weather was too nice :-)
We banded 21 new birds of 7 different species.
We had 5 recaptures: 4 from this Fall, local plus one GWCS originally
banded 9/25/11 as a HY U was a AHY male on
While banding at Clear Springs Ranch on Wed AM, we noticed a flock of seven
Steller's Jays. This is about twenty miles east of Cheyenne Mtn State Park, the
place nearest where I see them regularly.
How common are Steller's Jays on the high plains?

Up here in Woodland Park, on the opposite side of the WC Fire, we had our
first Rufous Hummer on July 1.
Last year they appeared on July 7.

Birders:
We had an enjoyable morning of banding Wed at Clear Springs Ranch (CSR)*.
It warmed up quickly and there was little wind!
Chokecherries (Prunus virginiana) were in full bloom

During an overnight camping trip to Phantom Canyon Sunday night, 4/28-29, we
found several singing Virginia's Warblers, at least two singing Warbling
Vireos, a Plumbeous Vireo singing and acting like he was on territory,
Bushtits, and after dark we heard a Common Poorwill. Specifically, we were
Diane Luck found a Northern Parula at Lake Hasty Sunday about 2p, and was
able to get me on it. It was singing occaisionally.

I agree with the possibility that the bees eating some powdered grain or
pollen on the sunflower chips.
I have solved the problem for now by putting the chips back in the bag and
putting out millet instead.

had a swarm of bee-like flies (or bees) in my sunflower chip tube feeders. So
many in fact that the birds cannot use them. The bees do not carry away or eat

The Tree Swallow females I recaptured in birdboxes this week (in SOS 17 and
SOS 19A) were already wearing bands :)
In SOS 17, bird #2311-50823 was initally banded 6/ 4/2010 as an After Second

Lewis' Woodpeckers were previous common, easily and reliably found and nesting
at Turkey Creek Ranch Kit carson picnic ground until the large dead cottonwood
trees that they usually need to nest were all cut down :(
Perhaps there are new large dead trees for them to nest?

The fog and drizzle helped the banding pick up today!
We had so many birds to process we had to close the nets twice to catch up!
Highlights of today were two Clay-colored Sparrows and four Lark Sparrows.
Our list - 74 birds processed!

It is not necessary to wait until hunting season because EC doves are not
protected by the migratory bird act,
and they are not game birds.

When doing my BBS Edison School Route this year I was impressed with higher
number of Cassin's Sparrows.
Compared to last year when there were almost no Lark Buntings, there were more,
but not up to usual census.
I found Mountain Plover in three new places :)
But no Burrowing Owls :(

I saw seven Common Nighthawks at different stops when doing my Breeding Bird
Survey route in extreme SE El Paso County, south of Rush and west through
Edison School and Meyers Rd west to Hanover.

of the gate to Seven Falls in South Cheyenne Canyon Park. There have been
Ovenbirds in this area for many years
