Re: [CGUYS] Highlighting PDFs

Micheal,

This might not help you with given you're on XP. I use an OSX app
called Skim to manage and annotate sources for my papers. Its a
fantastic tool. Might even make it worth going to a Mac.

Charles

http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/

Skim is a PDF reader and note-taker for OS X. It is designed to
help you read and annotate scientific papers in PDF, but is also
great for viewing any PDF file.

Stop printing and start skimming.

Explore the links to the right to investigate Skim and consider
helping out with the project.

Features:

* Viewing PDFs
* Adding and editing notes
* Highlighting important text
* Making "snapshots" for easy reference
* Navigation using table of contents or thumbnails
* View all your notes and highlights
* Convenient reading in full screen
* Giving powerful presentations
* Handy preview of internal links
* Focus using a reading bar
* Magnification tool
* Extensive AppleScript support
* Bookmarks
* Support for Apple Remote Control
* Interaction with LaTeX and PDFSync
* Spotlight support
* Highly customizable
* And much more...

Michael, if the creator of a PDF file locks it you have to respect that lock.
That is the law. Any speech about breaking the lock violates the DMCA. You
either respect the lock, find a more open supplier, or apply to the LOC for a
waver (I think they accept petitions every 2 years).

I apologize for bringing up the issue and for drawing in others to provide
workarounds.

Are the files locked? If not, then you can follow suggestions from the
list.

Even if they are locked, you can request unlocked copies. That's often
possible if you sign an agreement not to sell or distribute them
commercially. It can be done that way for research purposes.

Thank you. I wish we lived in a freer country, but we don't.

So that our shackles don't get screwed even tighter everyone needs to pay
attention to the Network Neutrality law introduced in Congress this week.
Rep. Markey (D-Mass) has introduced the "Internet Freedom Act of 2008"
with Rep. Pickering (R-Mo.).

I found what I thought I had remembered. A few weeks ago, I received a
referral to a product sold by Avanquest. I can not speak for its quality but
it is advertised as having the ablility to creat and edit PDF files. It is
priced at about $80.

It can be found at -

I use a free product called PDF Creator for "printing" web documents, etc.
that I want to save but I am not yet in need of a more powerful product for
my XP box.

YMMV

Andy Gallant and Daniel Else

STOP!

Criminal acts are not allowed on this discussion list. You are committing
speech crimes that violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
Providing directions for circumvention is a criminal act.

If you want to put yourselves in danger of prosecution that is your
business, but do it off list. Criminal speech on the list puts the entire
list in peril of being shut down. I don't want this to happen.

If you continue with criminal speech I will have to protect the list by
restricting your ability to post. So please STOP!

Dan, I am particularly surprised that someone posting from LOC would so
brazenly break the law. Working for one of the primary DMCA arbiters you
should know better than the rest of us what the DMCA requires.

Michael, if the creator of a PDF file locks it you have to respect that
lock. That is the law. Any speech about breaking the lock violates the
DMCA. You either respect the lock, find a more open supplier, or apply to
the LOC for a waver (I think they accept petitions every 2 years). If you
take the long view, not voting for corrupt politicians might help too.

Re: [CGUYS] Highlighting PDFs

2008-02-14 Thread Andy Gallant
I've had some PDF files that couldn't be printed directly to the "Adobe
PDF" printer (WinXP Pro) - couldn't copy/paste, couldn't save as another
file type, couldn't do anything except look at it or print hard copy.
Security won.

So, a work-around that worked was to print hard copy and then scan the
physical printout back into a PDF file. Then I had a file I could work
on. The setup was Adobe Acrobat 7.0, which has been OK for what I need,
and a Brother 8840DN multifunction printer/scanner/copier/fax, which
came with a non-updatable version of ScanSoft PaperPort. If I had had
the time, I might have tried to OCR the file, but it was a form with
boxes and multiple fonts, and quick and dirty was good enough then.

So, maybe some combination of printing and/or OCR could work for you.
