what kind of paramters? and what kind of cdrom ? if its a standard IDE
drive hooked to an IDE controller you shouldn't need any parameters it
ought to detect it automagically. if its a non standard one using one of
those old soundcard interfaces, you may need the I/O address(s) of it and
the IRQ
i've had that prob too on an aha 2940UW. it appears to be fixed in the
newer versions of bootdisks(if there are newer?) since i havent seen that
problem on my machine in a while.. i also heard rumors that the aic78xx
driver doesnt like to co exist with other scsi drivers and there was a
boot disk

you have to use redhat to use 2.2 ? i've been using slink since around
kernel 2.1.90 (used slackware before that). i heard redhat was crap, the
closest i've ever gotten to a 'redhat' system was linuxppc (which i
couldnt get installed). nothin stoppin you from running 2.2 on
slink. although i
fetchmail resends the mail through the local MTA. if your local SMTP
server is broken(try mailing yourself) then the mail won't get delievered.

check your ulimits (ulimit -a) i get that error because my ulimits are
quite strict and when i exceed the limits it prevents me from doing so and
pukes with that error. currently i have ulimit's for memory set at

to use rz to recieve a file(on the rmote shell) and then upload the file,
and use sz file to send a file from the shell to my modem.

port/protocol. a properly firewalled port will time out when a connection
is attampted. as for IGMP i dont think that is even enabled in the kernel

system(non firewalled). those flaws were fixed but there are many more
potential problems as the base code has some severe security

you may not be able to get sound because there is not enough free memory
below 16MB for the dma buffer.
in more recent 2.2.x kernels you gotta enable the persistant DMA buffers
in sound config and it will reserve the memory at boot. it may not solve
this problem, but its an idea :)

oh, in that case ...
it may be easier to make a dos boot disk, and download ntfsdos
(www.ntinternals.com i believe) to recover the data. i havent seen a
(simple) boot disk rescue thing for linux to rescue NT. ntfsdos(read
only) is free, a read write version is commercial. i dont remember the
check to see if there is anything in /etc/hosts.deny i think debian
defaults to denying everyone access (could be wrong)
then either add your ips to /etc/hosts.allow, comment out the
lines(reccomended) in hosts.deny (tweak it later) or rm hosts.deny
hosts.allow/deny easiest way to add your
(re)install libstdc++ ??
run ldconfig -v | grep libcstc++ to make sure its loaded if its installed,
if not add the path to it to /etc/ld.so.conf or to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH

DAC speed is related to the VIDEO card only. it just defines how fas the
video card can draw to the analog output at the specific refresh
rates(somewhere along those lines) it is different from the refresh rate
on the monitor. even if a videocard has a 350Mhz DAC it should still run

sounds like a DNS issue, run a reverse lookup on the IP and see what comes
out. you can also add this line to your /etc/resolv.conf
domain yourdomain.com
that will cause the system to search the local domain when you ping a
hostname. for me if i pinged the host galactica, resolv.conf would
i have no complaints about netscape either. Sure it can crash..lockup.
But it has never..once.. brought down the system. never brought down X
either.
i don't care if an app crashes, as long as it doesn't take anything else
down with it. NT does it to me all thje time..doing normal things then
try this:
dpkg -S /usr/bin
it spitsout a screenfull of packages for that dir.

i may be wrong but i think the esound daemon does this, not though in the

i believe, apps send the output of the audio to the daemon and the daemon
opens /dev/dsp and outputs it there. any number of apps can talk to the

can someone explain what the XF86 option 'doublescan' is ? I'm trying to

slap the script in /etc/init.d
put a link to it in /etc/rc?.d
where ? = runlevel (runlevel 2 is defailt for debian so /etc/rc2.d )

compile kde apps by hand and they all go into /usr/local/kde/bin and no
matter what i do i can't get that into my $PATH for X. its in my
/etc/enviornment and /etc/profile and i added it to /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup
but still it
broadcast.com has mostly windows stuff? ironic ..i heard that
broadcast.com uses a few hundred linux boxes to host their content ! lol
