Yesterday night I hibernated the laptop, and this morning, on thaw, I forgot
(again) to select from grub the standard kernel I was working in yesterday
(3.8.0-31) so I lost my

IMHO, it's much more productive to open a new bug like Please enable hibernate
in Ubuntu, Hibernate doesn't work in Ubuntu etc.
than posting complaints to this one;
the current bug report is a suggestion to DISABLE the hibernation in
Ubuntu;

In the time elapsed since last post I found I can blindly enter my
password into to black tty7 and this triggers the display of the unity
desktop.
