To my knowledge default is a catch all kind of thing when done non namedhosting. vhost _default_:80 vhost localhost:80 vhost apache.org:80 if the server gets a host header of example.com it goes to _default_... alteast that is how I understood it... not sure if thats documented somewhere though.
