Re: Who is responsible for NB plugin portal?

2023-12-14 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
We're all working on this project together, sometimes responses may take
some time. :-)

Indeed, there's no option for paid plugins -- you'd need to make those
available yourself, though there are several ways (blogs, etc) that these
could be promoted, including on this mailing list.

The plugin portal itself is also open source, so you could contribute to it
by somehow providing support in it for paid plugins.

Re: Windows 11 Issues - Copy/Paste Failure

Here's the issue that awaits you when you move on from NetBeans:
https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/JBR-5980/

I.e., it's probably connected to Swing and a race condition with the clipboard.

Proposal: Bi-weekly 30 minute NetBeans clinic

2023-06-06 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

We have a continual stream of releases following our quarterly release
cycle, things are going well, though a lot of the work within the
release cycle falls on a few shoulders.

And those shoulders aren't always well coordinated.

I'd like to propose that we have a standing meeting every second week
for 30 minutes, e.g., every second Friday at 12:00, not just in the
release cycle but always.

I'll be on the call plus anyone else who needs to coordinate
activities or who wants to quickly sync up with someone or break a
very long confusing email discussion with a short conversation that
might simplify things.

How does that sound? I'll make my Zoom available for this if there's
at least a few who'd like this kind of drop-in facility.

Re: [Lazy Consensus] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-12 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Could it be a solution to continue Java 8 on a branch and then, if
that works, i.e., if the work that needs to be done is actually done
there, we bring it back into the main repo -- i.e., we put it on a
sidetrack for one release, to see if this lightens the burden for
those who have felt frustrated and so that those who rightly are
focused on backward compatibility have a place to prove that the
approach they propose works?

Yes, they're loading a ton of org.netbeans.modules.cnd modules, which
may be keeping them on older versions of NetBeans Platform, meaning
that they can't move to later JDKs anyway.

Re: AW: [Lazy Consensus] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-11 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
I'd say those that are arguing for JDK 8 are representing the
traditional NetBeans focus on compatibility and supporting the full
range of Java LTS versions.

However, unless they step in to actively work on that with others,
that is not sustainable given the sheer number and pace of Java
releases versus the number of people willing and able to continue to
support that.

To Karl's question -- the cool new look and feels are not included in
the latest Microchip MPLAB X IDE, so it's quite an old version of the
NetBeans Platform, which they may therefore be completely happy with
and not need to upgrade anyway and so not have any issues with us
dropping JDK 8 -- and by the time they upgrade their NetBeans Platform
version, they'd probably do the same with their JDK version (which
I'll find out when I meet with them).

Re: AW: [Lazy Consensus] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-11 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
I download and installed MPLAB X IDE by Microchip today, probably one
of the most widely used NetBeans Platform applications, where I see
this:

Product Version: MPLAB X IDE v6.05
Updates: Updates available
Java: 1.8.0_345; OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM 25.345-b01
Runtime: OpenJDK Runtime Environment 1.8.0_345-b01
System: Mac OS X version 10.15.7 running on x86_64; UTF-8; en_EN (mplab)

I have a meeting this evening with Vincent Sheard, Associate Director,
Development Tools at Microchip.

Of course, as far as we can tell, they have not contributed anything
to Apache NetBeans and are essentially profiting from the work we're
doing for free.

Still, will be good to hear from them what their perspective is
(possibly they're going to move away from JDK 8 anyway or even from
NetBeans itself to something in a browser, etc).

Also, if the vote succeeds, and we announce our intentions in the
blog, etc, be aware that organizations may pop up and indicate their
concerns etc -- in which case, they'll need to start contributing here
actively, whether on the JDK 8 branch or in the main line.

Those who do not contribute cannot complain.

Well, what we're trying to do here is keep the whole project together
and not branch, which comes down to forking.

Re: AW: [Lazy Consensus] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-11 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

Could a consensus solution be that for all JDK 8 - compatibility
related items, any/all work related to that, we assign those issues to
Svata -- and we try this for one release and see how that goes? If it
fails, then in the release after that, we should all then have
consensus to move away from JDK 8.

This does not solve the question of when we'll stop supporting a
particular JDK release -- except that it sounds like "forever, as long
as someone turns up to continue to support that release and in fact
does so".

Re: [Lazy Consensus] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-10 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
If Jaroslav, Svata, and Toni will take ownership of and be responsible
for ALL items that relate to handling JDK 8 related incompatibilities
and any other issues connected to this, then we may be able to solve
this problem.

I perceive little faith in that this will be done, since this has thus
far not been done -- and various other core contributors have picked
up these tasks so far.

Could we assign any tasks of this kinds to Svata, for example, i.e.,
Svata, would you be the owner of these tasks?

Re: [Lazy Consensus] Minimum JDK build and run policy (dropping JDK 8)

2023-04-10 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
One strand that comes through in this discussion is that those that want to
continue JDK 8 should also be the owners of it.

It is clear that a level of exhaustion is being reached by the majority of
the core contributors of this project.

A bigger risk than us losing the ability to run projects dependent on JDK 8
is losing the majority of the community of collaborators who together have
been keeping us alive in Apache.

2023-04-10 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
My feeling on this discussion is that, yes, it’s unfortunate that we’re
getting to fruitful discussion only at this late stage — but better late
than never and without this useful thread we wouldn’t have been getting
where we’re getting at all.

Could one way forward be to do a Zoom call with all those invested in this
(and then bring everything decided back to this mailing list) during the
coming week, unless we can already predict that that will not bring us
further.

NetBeans at FOSDEM

2022-12-07 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

We've historically had a pretty good time at FOSDEM over the past
years, with sessions and beers and catching up with people in hotel
lobbies.

https://foojay.io/today/friends-of-openjdk-at-fosdem-2023/

The chance exists again to have that experience, the day for our
content is Sunday 5 February, feel free to put lots of content in, we
have until the 10th to do so, i.e., the coming weekend, so next much
time, but would be great to see several NetBeans people and sessions
again. :-)

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache NetBeans 16

2022-11-23 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
+1 (binding)

openjdk 11.0.13 2021-10-19 LTS
OpenJDK Runtime Environment Zulu11.52+13-CA (build 11.0.13+8-LTS)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM Zulu11.52+13-CA (build 11.0.13+8-LTS, mixed mode)

Built basic and then full, both work, and everything runs smoothly.

The main problem that I have is that since my laptop hasn't overheated
after NetBeans 16 started up, I don't know anymore when I have it up
and running in the background. :-)

Re: nb-javac for building NetBeans itself

2022-10-27 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Indeed, as always, of course, you can run NetBeans on a JDK and run
your projects on any other JDK.

However, the place where nb-javac is used is within the Java editor
right now and, potentially, also when NetBeans is built (which is what
the discussion is about), which would mean that JDK would be a JRE
only, with all its tools, e.g., javac, not being used.

There are advantages and disadvantages to this, as to anything else
that is meaningful in life. :-)

2022-10-26 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Just been looking into open source work done in the context of the
European Union and one of the key applications there requires JDK 8:

https://github.com/l-e-x/leos

I.e., we need to stop thinking that Java 8 is somehow dead or
ethically or otherwise problematic -- it's simply what a great deal of
applications use and any strategy we come up with needs to cater to
Java 8.

Re: nb-javac for building NetBeans itself

The direction is clear — we all work together on NetBeans and, since we’re
all different people with different perspectives, we share our different
ideas and perspectives, discuss them, and provide pull requests based on
our ideas and perspectives. Some are accepted and some not, depending on
how clear and persuasive we are.

2022-10-24 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
I take the above back -- nb-javac is developed by Jaroslav Tulach, and
whoever contributes, e.g., Dusan Balek.

https://github.com/JaroslavTulach/nb-javac/

Where should it be, Neil? It can't be here at Apache because of its
licensing. Isn't it fine where it is and under active development via
Jaroslav and others?

Where should it be on Maven Central where it is not versus where it is now?

nb-javac for building NetBeans itself

2022-10-24 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

Right now, when we build NetBeans, we’re using the javac from the JDK that
we’re using to do the build — so that we’re dependent on the JDK team,
which can decide to drop features.

If, instead, we were to set the compiler in NetBeans the build script, to
nb-javac, which is available on Maven Central and is compatible with javac,
and is used as part of NetBeans already at runtime, and runs on JDK 8 or
later — unlike javac which is tied to the JDK against which we’re doing the
build — we would be even more independent and we’d be able to build for
future JDKs, we would not have a need for a minimum JDK.

The module definition in project.properties of each module could define its
javac target version. We could have a module using virtual threads, set to
target 19, where it would be disable if not run on JDK 19.

The Disco module, right now, cannot be compiled on JDK 8 because it sets
its target to 11, though if nb-javac were used during the build, because
nb-javac right now supports everything up to 19.

So, switching to nb-javac sounds like a sensible thing — are there any
objections, Jaroslav has a pull request.

Foojay Slack (https://join.slack.com/t/foojay/signup), maybe you could
speak at an upcoming Manchester JUG meeting.

Re: Plugin/Code donation

2022-09-12 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
The key question is if/who will maintain/further develop this code --
unless you feel it's completely stable, no issues expected, nor
further development needed?

If you're going to donate something and not maintain it and no one
will maintain it, and you expect there to be things that need to be
maintained, then it's better to not donate it.

Subject: A license check tool offered by Apache SkyWalking Community
To: Incubator
Cc: dev

Hi podlings

Apache SkyWalking graduated from the incubator years ago, but we still
remember we were struggling to keep licenses of dependencies well
organized and listed correctly.
So, SkyWalking PMC/Committer worked with the community starting to
build a tool to help with the license header and dependencies checker.

I am honored to share that, this tool is well built and widely used in
and out of the ASF projects.

https://github.com/apache/skywalking-eyes

Apache SkyWalking eyes is a full-featured license tool to check and
fix license headers and resolve dependencies' licenses, with various
languages support.
No matter whether your source codes are in hybrid license headers, or
a monorepo requires a consistent tool to check dependencies from
different dependency management tools. It works.

Also, as GitHub Action is widely used in the ASF projects, SkyWalking
eyes provide integration with GHA, as well as binary tar and docker
image[1] for other CI platforms.

We hope this project could help incubating projects, especially new
podlings, to analyze dependencies easier.

Quite some more context is needed here.

And, for the free open source Apache NetBeans project, people like you are
needed to join in and collaborate with us, in at least testing, but better
than that, contributing code and fixes, will you and others working with
you on that project be able to spend some time on that?

[ANNOUNCE] Apache NetBeans 14 released

2022-06-17 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

The Apache NetBeans team is pleased to announce that Apache NetBeans
13 was released on June 9, 2022 (though there's been a delay in
announcing the release).

What's in the Apache NetBeans 14 release:

https://github.com/apache/netbeans/releases/tag/14

Note it's the first time we're doing a generated changelog like the
above, next time it will be even better, we'll work on generating
different sections and highlights, to make it easier to read through.

Downloads:

https://netbeans.apache.org/download/nb14/nb14.html

See our release schedule:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Release+Schedule

Feel free to share the good news!

Thanks everyone, and best wishes,

Neil, Eric, Geertjan
on behalf of Apache NetBeans PMC

In the announcement of the Apache NetBeans 14 release, can we refer to
this release changelog in GitHub, what is the best link for that
purpose?

This is brilliant progress, automated release notes, plus the idea of
tagging issues as features or highlights, etc, for automation into
sections in the generated release notes.

Maybe you need to refresh the home page.

Yes, we’re updating things now and announcements will be going out as well.

2022-06-12 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Yes, I’m surprised too. And obviously NetBeans is not supposed to run only
on GraalVM, you know the answer to that question, and that this is a bug.

List of fixes for Apache NetBeans 14

2022-06-07 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

With the next release almost ready, do we have a quick link to the list of
fixes that have made it in?

I’m in favor of not creating release notes, unless someone volunteers, but
to just highlight some of the most useful fixes and then point to the
entire list.

Thanks,

Gj

And please note this text in the vote thread, and can we try to really
follow this in the Apache NetBeans 14 vote thread, please:

“Only respond if you are going to vote, i.e., this is NOT a discussion
thread.”

Re: OpenJDK 17 with NB 13 and global quality?

2022-05-27 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
There’s been issues identified and it’s being looked at. What will you do
to prevent this continuing to happen to you? Maybe join in with early
testing prior to release to flag these issues you encounter and block the
next release until these kinds of issues are fixed?

Global quality is in your own hands.

Pick one of these that you (or someone else) are personally going to be
working on, what your schedule is, your timeline, and deliverables.

No, Oracle owes you nothing at all. No, we will not ask Oracle to donate
one more line of code that is not going to be owned by a very specific
person with an actual plan.
