For the record, I made further tests. I changed the admin email to
another mail provider (gmx.com) and no luck either. I tested that same
gmx.com address with a forum of mine, running almost the same phpBB
version (same main branch) and it worked fine.
So I guess that the issue may be bigger than a mere gmail configuration
update.

Outgoing mail from the forum has the From field set as

Perhaps this triggers Gmail's quarantine policy?

I can provide full headers for some examples of outgoing mails from

The phpBB admin form only requests contact and from addresses.
IMHO the issue is with the requirements for SPF, DKIM... as described in

Re: Forums: BBcode for [rel] links broken

Indeed, I think that the trick was in the Server settings of the ACP.
I had to change the setting for Force server URL settings to Yes (was No).
I guess there is still something wrong in the server files (a
declaration that still uses user.services). But I understand it is now
overridden by this ACP setting.

Seems OK so far.
Thanks!

Thanks Bidouille. That's the way I took.
I changed the settings in the ACP.

Before:
BBCode usage = [rel={LOCAL_URL}]{TEXT1}[/rel]
HTML replacement = {TEXT1}

Now:
BBCode usage = [rel={TEXT1}]{TEXT2}[/rel]
HTML replacement = https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/{TEXT1}";>{TEXT2}

Not very elegant since it defeats the point of the LOCAL_URL. But at
least it works.

Hi,

Maybe it is "just" a corrupt AOO profile?

Unfortunately I don't know how (where) to rename it on macOS...

with the help of this file (sorry, only in german) you can determine the
appropriate directory:

- Dean

Could you please explain???
I understand you're saying that forum users are emotional and they
spread false information like MS would drop 32bit support.
I don't remember any power user saying such things. We are hardly
emotional in the forum, we have taken great care to avoid all the
trolling and the FUD in all the AOO/LO topics (not that many BTW).
The forum has been a long time champion of AOO (over LO). I think that
the old subscribers on this list know me (as Hagar on forums and AOO
mailing lists). Some other forum power users also participate to this
list from time to time and I don't think "it is difficult to argue with"
us. Your patronizing is rather ill placed.

Personally, I despise what happened with the forking. I continued to
support AOO a very long time. However, late last year, the level of this
very mailing list reached a low that was the trigger for me. More energy
was wasted on semantics or futile topics, some of the messages in this
very discussion still show delicate interactions. Thus, I tried LO,
something I would never have though of before. Just to see. And
actually, it's good. After several weeks of testing for my production
work, I can tell that it's better than AOO, it made me save times, ease
my daily work and is stable.

When it forked, I thought that it would be a great experience for the
opensource community. Just look at the result years afterward: LO has
embarked most of the developers! They started from nothing, compared to
the Apache branding and they managed a marketing plan that got it where
it is: included in most GNU/Linux distros, corporate support...

I'm still stunned by how many users still don't know about LO and come
to AOO first. This is the only thing that makes AOO still alive IMHO.
The AOO project benefits from the huge OOo and Apache
reputation/history. But I fear that's all.

Can' wait for your gentle education BTW!

Re: Open Office Writer

Hi,

AOO can open .docx but cannot save in that format. LibreOffice can however.
Basically, if you need to exchange documents in .docx, then stick to MS
Office, that's the vendor lock-in policy.

Re: Writer and .docx

2020-10-17 Thread Hagar Delest

Top posting.
I fully agree with Pedro.
The MS Office OOXML support is a core question for the project IMHO.
I think that the success of LO is heavily based on OOXML support. It
provides users something they believe is a clone of MS Office (or at
least good enough to meet their needs and exchange docx/xlsx/pptx with
other users).

But it is very detrimental to ODF because if it works so well for users
using OOXML, then why bother with another format (ODF)???

By the way, our company just upgraded from MS Office 2010 to 2016 and it
is quite a nightmare with many documents needing readjustments due to
changes in the OOXML version it seems (it provides again a
"compatibility mode").
Meaning that their own format is very likely to change again and again,
making it always difficult for the other applications to catch up with
the changes.

The best method to work with OOXML is to buy MS Office. Why not focusing
on improving AOO first?
If people do need the OOXML export, then they will all switch to LO. If
a AOO user base remains, then better improve AOO for them.

Even if AOO had a very good import/export filter, since it has less
features anyway, what would be the point exactly?

I am pretty good at knowing what things will export properly to DOCX format and
which will not (just because I have done it often enough). Only once have I had
a client (it was government DoD) that would accept (and even required) and ODT
file.

Then you are a very valuable person for helping in fixing these Import/Export
issues
I always send documents in Open Document (to EU, ICCAT, etc) and they will not
refuse it ;)

(2) Frequently exchange documents with clients that will use/require DOCX.

I usually save them in DOC and I haven't had complaints. In the cases where
formatting is lost, then I have to switch to Windows 7 and an old copy of MS
Office 2010 and even so there are issues sometimes (but I refuse to continually
buy the new version that MS is pushing). I don't use LibreOffice for that
because there is also format loss (sometimes even content loss)

(3) I frequently work with people who are better off not having to deal with
the extra steps of converting between formats.

That is indeed an obstacle. But using DOC, XLS and PPT usually solves the
problem. In fact I think that MS old formats have become the lingua franca of
the office documents ;)

All else being equal, if you fall into the categories above, I usually tell
them to use LibreOffice because it will natively support reading and writing
DOCX format. When I ask people why they chose LibreOffice over Apache
OpenOffice, DOCX support is the reason usually listed.

Yes, that is indeed one advantage. But as I mentioned before, there are serious
glitches when using MS XML formats in LibreOffice and in addition this will
help Microsoft make their format the standard. And I believe that is the wrong
option.

Many governments and organizations have accepted Open Document as a solution to
be free from proprietary formats. The reason they can't switch to it is because
all PCs are loaded with Windows and Office... And MS Office will only accept
without warnings ODF documents created and edited in MS Office...

I do not have a solution for this profit based bullying but accepting to use MS
XML formats is becoming part of the problem and not part of the solution...

Pedro

Same for me with your files.
I tried with some of my own files, same issue (.ods and .odt). It seems

When I try to save as, I get an Error saving the document... But seems
to save anyway. If I open that new file, I still get the general error
message but loads fine. Then it saves OK but still gives the error
message when loaded.

On my xubuntu 20.04 64bit system.

See the above URL for details.

After I added https toi the URL all worked fine.

Wave did also do a curl request which also worked fine.

We have agreed now that I play the ball back to google, with the
feedback that this looks like a Google internal issue.

The Robot.txt has not been changed for 11 years. Yandex can crawl the

I very much appreciated the quick session. Thanks.

One of the Google Search admins for forum.openoffice.org could check
the current Google search apis that are in use on that site. Changes
are occasionally made to the calls, and maybe that is the issue, or a
robots.txt for that site is causing this. I don't think it requires a
response, but maybe some investigation.

Just some ideas...

Dear webmaster of forum.openoffice.org

I'm an analyst at Google in Switzerland. We wanted to bring your
attention to a critical issue with your website, and how it's
available for Google's web search.

In particular, Googlebot has been unable to crawl URLs from
https://forum.openoffice.org/ . This will cause those pages to drop
out of Google's search results, and will prevent new pages from being
picked up for Search. If you're not aware of this issue, you may be
accidentally blocking these pages from Google Search due to a server
issue. If you need to block Googlebot from crawling pages on your
website, we'd recommend using the robots.txt file instead.

Should you need to recognize IP addresses of Googlebot requests, you
can use a reverse IP lookup to do so:
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/80553

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly. For
verification purposes, we are sending a copy of this message to your
site's Search Console account.

Thank you,
John Mueller (joh...@google.com )

I see the difference more or less in every context where an icon is associated
with the window in GNOME (so Xubuntu may be different).

So for example:
- in the bottom bar listing open windows (if you have it)
- in the top bar next to the title of the active window
- in the Alt-Tab dialog to switch windows see https://imgur.com/a/EM3yTpU where
both 4.1.6 and 4.1.5 were open on an empty Writer document.

This is not a bug, even though one might want to mention it in the Release
Notes as a minor UI change.

In XFCE (Xubuntu), I see:
- Each application icon in the Alt+Tab dialog (no orb and Writer and Calc icons
if I have such documents open)
- Each application icon in the desktop panel, side by side, with no orb.
So there was no change with XFCE.

This is not necessarily a bug, but I'd like to check on this: on Linux-64 (I
haven't tried on other systems), if you are editing a file in Writer you'll get
two different toolbar icons in 4.1.5 and 4.1.6.

Comparison screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/wtNhT9k

In short:
- 4.1.5 (left): the Writer icon is shown
- 4.1.6 (right): the generic ("orb") icon is shown

Was this done on purpose? I believe the old ones are more informative, as it
usually happens to have, say, a Writer and a Calc document open at the same
time.

If your system does not come with a bottom toolbar, you will still notice the
difference in the top toolbar by switching between the two instances.

On the other hand, the new high-resolution icons look really nice, as I already
noted.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Are you talking about the desktop panel? I use Xubuntu (18.10 on 64bit) and I
do see the Writer/Calc/... icons, not the orb.

With the 4.1.6 build, I can't get the AOO icons in 128 size either. The other

Could someone either remove the link or change the page to something saying the

I did an mysqldump and then ran the sql on the new sql server. I’ll need to

Hi Dave,

First, the responsiveness is back with this configuration, that's great!

I've tried several admin and moderator tasks and it seems OK on the English
forum (post moderation approval, post edition, user profile edit, topic move).

However I saw is that some posts are shown empty. If I edit the post I see the
text in the message area but when I try to submit, it becomes blank and empty
(but I managed to edit one as stated above).
For example, compare these 2 identical threads:
- https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=61238

Just to be clear, we had two different issues here:

1. Some advanced search options broke due to incompatibility with the new SQL
server (and this is fixed, which is great). This is indeed just a bug.

2. Forum being offline (no DB connection, error on all pages). This is
equivalent to the service being down.

I wasn't able to see issue 2 either, so it probably lasted just for a very
short period. But I think we all agree that monitoring should catch this, at
least when it extends for several minutes (not necessarily this case).

I'm not sure it's the same problem. The problem being discussed here is not
about the site being responsive, but about something like: I open
http://it.openoffice.org and nothing happens for a few minutes (since the first
DNS times out), but then it loads (since it switches to the second DNS entry)
and from then on I can continue browsing at ordinary speed until I close my
browser.

If what you see on the forum is more like every page load being a little slower
than usual, then it must be a different problem. Yes, Infra recently changed
the SQL server. But this shouldn't have an impact on performance, unless the
new server is really too small. If you believe this could be the case, we can
Infra to monitor the system load on the new server to be sure.

  Andrea.

Hager,

My thoughts on a backup were that the file opened at start of an editing
session should be backed up, so that in the event that the edited file
corrupted (the ### problem) the previous version remained available. It is bad
enough to lose a session of edits, but how much worse to lose the entire file
as often occurs with the ### problem Having regard to the large size of
current hard disks, I feel that this backup procedure (might it need to be a
backup of a backup?) should be enabled by default

I thought the backup proposed by Peter was for the registrymodification file.
After second reading, it was about any file at all. Understood. Of course, that
should be the standard process.
I think that the new file should be written as a temporary file next to the
original one and the original deleted and the new one renamed after the system
has confirmation from the OS that the save is complete.
I think that when saving a file in MS Office, we can see such temporary files
appear and disappear when saving.

As for the spellcheck corruption, I noticed quite recently that it could be in
fact a temporary glitch. It happened on a big file (25MB), sometimes all the
text is underlined and sometimes there is no underline at all (even where there
should be). This behavior disappear after some time (haven't yet investigated
what is needed, reboot or Windows session...)

Perhaps such a file is at the limit of what OO can comfortably handle. I know
from my own experience that large files can be slow to format correctly,
depending where in the file the cursor was last positioned. The formatting
seems to start at the cursor position and seems to take several passes through
the file until it stabilises. The ### problem you report may be an instance of
this and might have cleared with the stabilisation of the formatting.

As far as I remember, even waiting for a long time doesn't change anything.
No real time to investigate when that file is open but will try to record if
there is something special.

The only one I would see is Canonical. But i still don't understand why they
chose LibO.
What other company would invest money in a MS Office competitor???
In addition to the investment in the development (meaning manpower cost but
also the time needed to get the equivalent features they already have in MS
Office), there would also be the training of the users, the migration of the
existing tools and files (especially macros) and the problem of the format
interoperability with the people this company deals with.
That's too much for companies to think about it IMHO. Or perhaps Google but
what for?

Is there any company that invests substantially in LibO BTW (just a question, I
really don't know)?
When I see all the migrations (mostly to LibO because it's much more dynamic
and they are good at marketing their project), I just see bodies (often
administrations) who want to cut costs but without major investment, they just
take it because it serves their cause but I doubt there is any will to go
further for them (I mean dedicate manpower to help the project).

I thought when OOo was given to Apache that the licensing would give interest
to the project for companies but it did not happen at all. Less restrictive
licensing attracts most of the devs. This is part of the world evolution today
I guess: people want more free sharing, or at least want to avoid that their
code can be used for commercial when they give it for free.

So I'm not very optimistic.
Hopefully someone has brighter clues.

Our best recruitment base is our user base. The more we use them the tighter
the link between user and developer gets, the more probable it is we get people.
Community feeling is a strong motivator for doing the right thing.

Well, remember that the user base of applications like AOO is not the same as
for other more geek-oriented application in OpenSource field. We face mostly
basic users who wants things done at no cost and with equivalent features to MS
Office ones for example. They don't have any knowledge nor will to engage very
far.
According to what we see in the forum, it's rather difficult to even make them
file a bug report.

And people we have, we lack imho skill. And this we need to build. We need to
open ways into open office development. Set starting points with view little
knowledge and need to slowly guide the volunteers to the deeper end of our
projects.

Currently we don't have roads like I described above, we only have a fast and
frightening jungle.

Personally, I've very little knowledge of Basic macros (I sometimes
help/improve macros in the forum) and I'm a fan of AOO but doing code (I mean
for development) is not in my intention at all, that's too huge a step.
So, yes, quite a frightening jungle.
Let's face it: LibO seems to be doing better to get devs (that's how I see it
from the outside, I don't know how true it is in reality). So what is the AOO
plan exactly? I guess that committers want to invest their time in a project
that has a future so that their own work can last in that project.
Should AOO be focused on stability and robustness (and less on new features)?
Or should it try to keep up with LibO (at least by implementing features not
that hard to code and are considered must have in LibO)?...

Getting users to evaluate what is a bug and what is not would be in my eyes a
huge step forward.

This is something we do in the forum. We help them investigate and we urge them
to file a report when we can confirm there is indeed a bug (some forum
volunteers even file the bug themselves when the user is not willing).

Of course the next step would be solving them. But for that we can vote,
measure or find other ways to promote them

As said in my other message, votes are cast in bugzilla. However, in the forum
we did see a clear trend: in the past, users bothered to subscribe bugzilla to
vote. They don't anymore. They clearly switch to something else (be it LibO or
MS Office).

Maybe slicing them up in micro jobs would work for some.
Setting up a bazaar another.

I would like to take one step after another.
And only do things we think that they work with people we have.
Because I do believe in that we need to do things in order that people join.

For sure.
What people do see is that there is quite few development and little bug
solving. It does not help to restore trust in the project.
But again, look at this list:
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17677#p81363
I raised this issue several times on this list and still nothing. Think of how
users talk about AOO after having lost files that way.
I do know that it is not an easy one but it is the kind of bug that
definitively damages AOO reputation. Finding the root cause and fixing it (or
changing the save process to avoid it) would be enough to release a new major
version. That would send a clear message that the community listen to the users.
For the record, I don't have any skills to help devs. However, we spent some
time with forum volunteers trying to find a hint, but nothing interesting so
far.

All the best
Peter

Well, that's the key point I guess.

(b)
The existing developers work voluntarily and do what they want - how do we get
them to fix _specific_ bugs?
Please understand what I mean: there are issues (respectively bug reports) that
are important for the users, but not interesting for the developers. How do we
motivate developers to work on _these_ issues?

[...]

We could put 50 issues to vote for each release of OO separately and fix the 10
which get the most votes from users.
By this I do not mean to fix only 10 bugs per release, but the developer's
willingness to fix 10 specific bugs, which interest the users, in addition to
fixed, no matter whether the developers keep these bugs important.

Who would cast a vote? Users? I doubt they would engage again in such process. They
already can vote for bugs. Some have hundreds of votes and nothing is done. What
"trust" they could have in a new list to vote on? Or it should at least be a
list of bugs acknowledged to be solvable with the limited resources still at hand.

For the record, in the forum, we tag all the topics that deals with a reported issue, it's easy to spot them, they have the
[Issue] tag in the topic title and the red flame as icon, see this query:
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/search.php?keywords=Issue&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

They key point is IMHO the motivation from free resources (not very
coordinated). We cannot force people to work on specific bugs. What is at stake
for devs? Fame? Pair recognition? Drilling by improving something big (AOO) in
the meantime?
Users point of view, I see 2 key bugs that are too frequent in the users forum:
- Files reduced to ### (may require core code change linked to the save process)
- Dictionary lost (resetting the profile is a mere workaround). The bug was
closed but I doubt the fix was really one since we still see this very often.

Perhaps the UI could be simplified but on the other hand, it helps to precisely

Old AOO referencing in Google

2017-05-10 Thread Hagar Delest

A user raised this strange result: when performing a Google search with "openoffice
download", the 3.4.1 version is the 3rd choice, this tends to present the 3.4.1
version as a not that old one. Is there a way to change that from the AOO site?
See: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=88693

By curiosity, I tried with Bing. The first result is... Office 365! then non
official sites and the official one in 5th position only.

Yahoo does not show 3.4.1 (even if the results are rather similar to those from
Bing).

I have checked using the same multimedia files on AOO 4,1.3 running on Windows

My workaround is to insert a hyperlink to the .avi/.mpg files, which calls the

It should offer the peace of mind with no license issue, no need of a
package full of features not really needed but sold efficiently by MS. No
need of permanent internet access, just install it locally.
It should say: here is a rock solid application that can prepare
pupils/student to office software. It is not MS Office but there are enough
similarities to make it a good tool to learn. Like your driving license:
you learn on a car but you can buy something (very) different. You just
have to adapt.
If there is something to make clear, it is the effort needed to adapt from
AOO to MS Office. I'm not saying it should be a clone but just make the
transition as smooth as possible, user point of view.

If you think little of AOO - it will be little...

Sorry, don't understand. If I thought little of AOO (meaning it's not very

PS: can't bear teachers asking my kids to provide homeworks in .docx/.xlsx.

Instead of complaining, why not change that?

For my kids, I try, providing them some rationale to be discussed. I'll raise
the question also during the meetings between parents and teachers.
For all the students who report that in the forum however, there is no way.
Just laziness from the teachers.

But reading again some post of this discussion, I'm wondering if we are not off
topic. I understood 'contribute' not as a money question only. Donating to AOO
directly is not possible so isn't it a dead end?

The only thing I can think of is to use crowfunding to reward devs fixing major
issues or implementing new features. Like give $5,000 to the contributor who
provide the piece of code that fixes the ### issue...
The problem is what happens to the money if no one want to work on it.

their userbase and even increase the earned money by monthly/yearly
subscription fees. ("mobile first, cloud first" is their main model now!)

+1.
I think that the situation was different at the beginning (2001-2010). OOo
moved the lines by supporting ODF. It offered users an alternative to vendor
lock-in policy. MS Office was also more expansive in those days I think.

Now it's rather different. MS Office (not 365) is not that expansive. The price
of a low cost smartphone. And let's face it, the MS Office features are way
ahead of AOO. I use both at work but AOO for a limited part of my work. Calc is
definitively not viable for work in my case, charting in Excel is really good.
Even the Calc user interface is not... user friendly.

So basically, what is the user base? Who should AOO focus on? For a company I
doubt the price of MS Office is really a problem (they negotiate fees for
sure). Since documents are mostly shared in .docx/.xlsx formats, why bother
with applications like AOO/LO that are not fully compatible? Is there any big
player willing to invest in something to compete with MS Office to avoid buying
it? Doesn't seem very likely.

So AOO is left with households, perhaps very very small companies and education
sector. I think that AOO should be the simple choice for schools. It should
offer the peace of mind with no license issue, no need of a package full of
features not really needed but sold efficiently by MS. No need of permanent
internet access, just install it locally.
It should say: here is a rock solid application that can prepare pupils/student
to office software. It is not MS Office but there are enough similarities to
make it a good tool to learn. Like your driving license: you learn on a car but
you can buy something (very) different. You just have to adapt.
If there is something to make clear, it is the effort needed to adapt from AOO
to MS Office. I'm not saying it should be a clone but just make the transition
as smooth as possible, user point of view.

As long as there is no consensus on the user base or on the purpose of AOO, it
will be difficult to set priorities.
I think that LO success is due to the new features because it's a developer
oriented project: it's fun, like a big sandbox. But for users, it may be
different (for example, we see in the forum a high number of topics about the
SAXParse error due to bad .docx export in LO).
Note: even if it takes time to get the direction, any effort to eliminate the
major bugs will improve AOO reputation (for example: spell check problem with
the user profile and the file content replaced with ). It should remain the
default target of developers.

Another idea: since users like to customize the appearance of their
applications, providing a way to easily edit/change the user interface
(buttons) could bring back some interest. Like themes in FF/TB.

Hi,

My name is Suhail and I have some suggestions for OpenOffice community.

OpenOffice is very popular and it attracts large number of downloads. My
suggestion is that Apache software foundation should talk to the document
foundation and ask them to merge their foundation with Apache software
foundation because Apache is world's biggest open source software foundation
and if the document foundation joins Apache then we can have one product
(OpenOffice). The ASF has many popular open source software products like
hadoop, tomcat, OpenOffice etc. It will be good for both ASF and the document
foundation to work together.

Spam removal can be performed by power users from another area (this is what

You seem to like the way ODFormat is defined.

To be precise, I like the the intent of ODF. Several parties decided to work
together so that a fully documented file format could be used with advanced
application features (I mean that could store data needed by complex
applications like word processors, spreadsheets, ...). Perhaps there was other
file formats at that time. Perhaps the momentum created by OOo helped ODF at
the same time despite other file formats availability.
I've a scientific background. Thus I'm more in favor of standardization than
closed blackboxes (or badly documented features).

But what is with Bill Pate, who has done a lot of work, and is looking atm for
a different tool.
He has fear that all his work is lost or unsuable of sorts when he imports to
Open Office. Or maybe his work is lost after a while he finds out he misses MSO
so much he wants to return.
We should also try to answer towards his fear.

Then I think my answer was clear: AOO can do what he wants but it will require
a change in the file format he's using right now (assuming he saves in .docx).

See I want to stay open. That means I work into the direction that supports
your requirement and to Bill Pate requirement. Giving both of you the maximum
of choice that is possible to provide with the available ressources.
This is a huge maybe impossible challenge. But I have some Ideas.

Thanks!

Still looking what Open Office already implements of them and what has to be
improved. And I will not manage to deliver on time atm. But I hope I find
support. In you and others that are interested in OO.

Of course. The main issue IMHO is that similar features may be handled differently. So
any bridge for "conversion" may introduce some glitches. There may also be
issues if some parts refer to undisclosed documentation. Let's hope there are very few of
them.

Openess incorporates for me /*Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité*/. Not fully supporting OOXML means giving up on Égalité. Not accepting the Users requirements is against my whish for Fraternité.

I'm OK with that as long as everybody has the means to implement OOXML (.docx,
...). But it has been discussed at length in this discussion already.
Note that by Égalité, you mean that everyone should be allowed to use the
format he wants. My opinion is that the Égalité is to use the same format
(hence the importance of the interoperability). However, they are free in their
choice of what format or application they want to use. The free choice falls in
the Liberté for me.

For me there is a political dimension in joining Open Office. And also imortant
one in this times.

I am sorry for drifting into idological point of view, but it explains my
feelings pretty well.

Same for me.

This is the key point for AOO now IMHO.
I think there is a point having import filters to give users a way to open the
files. Then the natural thing would be to save in ODF.

That's what was done with OOXML: AOO can import but the code to export in OOXML
is not activated. it does exist somewhere but it has never been implemented by
design.
My fear is: if AOO exports in OOXML (as LibO does), what will happen to ODF?
Most users would just use OOXML since it would be compatible with AOO and MS
Office. It may lead to frustration because of the glitches from the
conversions. OTOH, it may attract new users.
Note: it may say that bugs like 1900 leap year bug in OOXML are accepted
(except if it has been fixed since).

If there was at least the possibility to store the information linked to the AOO features
in OOXML without triggering any "conversion" operation, it may be a 3rd way.
Does OOXML allow that? I doubt it but perhaps there is room in parts of the format that
allow some kind of customization. It would be sad however to lose the human readable
structure of ODF (quite useful in case a file is corrupted or when you need to inspect a
file in detail).

Even if it came from a previous format, the goal was to make a documented

Re: In regards to Open Office

2016-10-02 Thread Hagar Delest

Top posting.

In fact, I came to OOo in 2006 because I used to use MS Word to compile data
and one day a file got corrupted for an unknown reason. I discovered that there
was no way to recover the file because it was proprietary. I think that at that
time the .doc format was not disclosed yet (but I may be wrong). What is sure
is that I could not get my file back. So I searched the net and found OOo and
ODF. And I adopted OOo because of the file format (I had already tried OOo 1
but did not like it).

If OOo had not gained popularity, I'm not sure MS would have created something
similar with their OOXML. And if the vendor lock-in policy is less an issue
now, OOo and ODF may be for something. What it would be if they hadn't been
there?

Just to precise something: I'm not complaining, and I don't say Linux people
are the best or whatever. I just say that file format is an issue. I admit that
I think MS do not play fair (but that's logical, else, they would certainly
lose users).
Up to the user to decide what is more important for him.

But if the focus is the application and not the file format, then what? Make a
free clone of MS Office? Just a lost cause then.
That's perhaps the problem today. Not that obvious when OOo was the leading
software. But now that there is LibO, if there is no discussion about what
should the ODF become, it will be a question of what poison to chose (to use
Dennis' words).
In this case, there is a point supporting OOXML. But it would slightly become a
de facto standard (what was .doc, ...). But would never be fully implemented in
all the applications due to the references to the proprietary functions.

alternative to the proprietary formats like .doc, .xls, ...
The problem was that legacy file formats (.doc, .xls, ...) could not
allow intercompatibility between software. Hence the need of an open
standard.

Well Jörg stated this:

ODF 1.0 corresponded to 99% of the original OpenOffice-XML Formal (sxw, sxc,
etc.)
written only for OOo.

So maybe I should have been more specific. The reality is that ODF was not designed; it
already existed and apparently, was only slightly adjusted and then turned into an
"open standard".

But please, I want you to also look at the reality and not just the shoulds and
wants.

No one outside of the open source community really uses ODF. Probably, some new
application will see reasons to create its own format if only to provide extra
features or whatever that the old standard doesn't. Also, even if you are not
commercial and trying to limit what another can do with your files, you can
have a reason to e.g. not use a zip file format, or whatever else you might say.

So, since ODF was not really designed, and since you can turn any standard into an open
standard, you could say e.g. Microsoft "should" implement and support that open
standard, but that's not really related to it being open; being open merely guarantees
that it would be easier.

But the question was incompatibilities.

By design, there should not be any compatibility aspect in an open
format : if the file format is fully documented, then each software
should respect that format and then the compatibility with other
applications will be achieved.

Tell that to the person who tried to open a Calligra document in LibreOffice:
all of the bulleting marks were replaced by something else and the document
didn't look the same at all.

But moreover I think many "open standards" must or apparently always do accept
a reduced level of functionality, think of the specification for DLNA/UPNP in which some
really useful functionality is barely possible. Causing smaller companies that do want to
provide a good user experience to use their own format or protocol, or to extend the
thing although hardly possible.

So the reason Microsoft is so hard to make compatible (and many others perhaps)
is that they do introduce stuff for their own that hardly anyone else can use.

But that's also how you create a better user experience and be honest, most of
the Linux software world... If I must not speak of AOO here then I will mention
GIMP, which has the full top menu under the context popup (right mouse button)
which is such a glaring deficiency (no actually context menu, then) that no
serious party or company that would want to earn money would ever design such a

Re: In regards to Open Office

2016-10-02 Thread Hagar Delest

Top posting.

I was of course talking about Office Open XML, also known as OpenXML or OOXML
developed by Microsoft and adopted by ECMA International as ECMA-376
<http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-376.htm> in 2006.
I've mostly seen ODF for the OpenOffice.org XML file format.

By reading again OP message, I see that he said "Can Apache open their Open Office XLM".
In the context of his message I thought that it was meant for the file format used by MS Office
since OP had a "writings saved at this point after using their set up".

And what is ODF?

ODF 1.0 corresponded to 99% of the original OpenOffice-XML Formal (sxw, sxc,
etc.)
written only for OOo.

And the truth is this there are two ISO standards, and neither of the two is an
ISO standard second class.

ODF:

363

OOXML:

463

And let me say it absolutely clear:
I've heard how MS has denigrated many years Linux, but I have also noticed that
MS
reality of ODF recognized.
Only with better software, we can beat MS, not with stupid sayings.

I believe in the competition for the better software, not I believe in the power
of ideological talk.

Re: In regards to Open Office

2016-10-02 Thread Hagar Delest

Yes it can.
Beware that OOXML was not designed to be compatible with anything else than MS
Office. So once you switch to Apache OpenOffice, save in native format (.odt
for text). MS Office can read that (even if it does not always to a very good
job at it).
AOO can't save in OOXML but AOO can save in .doc format quite well. Even if
small glitches can occur due to the MS Office file format (again).

I don't want to download the product if it can't.

Re: Testing 4.1.3

2016-09-28 Thread Hagar Delest

Thanks, up and running.

BTW, I noticed that it installed over my 4.1.2.
I don't remember if the RCs used to install in lieu of the production version
in the past but it may be surprising for some users.
Shouldn't it be installed in parallel (with no desktop-integration)? More
hassle but if it's for testing purpose, we can imagine that the user knows what
to do.
Just my 2 cents, it is not meant to add delays to change that.

thanks for the pointer, I'll wait for the Linux 64-bit and Windows

grrr, I was to fast with my offer as I'm not available until Thursday.
I'll test the builds then if it's still early enough.

Sorry

Hagar;

Development builds are being made available at the following location:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.3/binaries/
Click on your language and all currently available installers and
language packs are available. ariaelch is still updating so if you do
not see what you need yet it may well be coming soon. Note these are
development builds only at this point, not Release Candidates.

Keith

One of the great things about FOSS is the tight connection

on them, or, at least, the pool of potential developers

But open source, and open source projects, should not be
run in a normal, corporate s/w development mode, where some

be in touch with what our users, and our potential users, want.

No need to go very far. There is a bug tracker with Requests For Enhancements

I was rather surprised but there has been almost no question from users about
that.
We opened a discussion (as already linked) in the EN forum and mainly power
users posted. Too early to conclude if forum users are not aware yet or just
don't care.
Very few messages on the users ML also for an alternative.

The wiki page is a great idea so that this discussion can slowly die and the
energies can be focused on more efficient matters.

Anyway, even if the topic raised fears, if the outcome is a quick new release
as it seems the case, it will prove that all those who propagated FUD were
wrong. It may give AOO some visibility again (and new contributors). So in the
end, not that bad.

OpenOffice is unusable on Linux, you can't easily install it and once installed

Not at all. I use xubuntu since several years and it's rather easy to get rid
of the remnants of LibO automatically installed and then install from the deb
packages.
The desktop integration works very fine.

Mark Shuttleworth once said on an interview how to his opinion the LibreOffice
devs (that would then split off) made the Oracle employees' lives hell. Even
though Ubuntu has taken on LibreOffice after a while, he was no fan at all of
what happened.

I still don't unnderstand what happened there and why he did not support AOO
instead. I may have missed some political argument at the time of the split.

The "other thread" is actually liberating. Let's go public with the risk that
AOO will be shut down, despite the wishes and best efforts of its remaining developers.

I would like to see every possible medium used to present one message: "AOO is at
serious risk of dying, unless we get more volunteer developers, especially C++
programmers."

I know we need other skills as well, but I don't want to dilute or complicate
that message.

I would like a special mailing list recruitm...@openoffice.apache.org, just for
signing up and organizing new developers. No need for them to start with dev@,
especially the less experienced developers. Just send an e-mail to recruitment@

The message should go out every way it can:

us...@openoffice.apache.org
OpenOffice forums
Press release
memb...@apache.org
d...@community.apache.org

We should also strengthen the current download page appeal for developers to
state the risk of shut down.

Index out of bounds

2016-08-02 Thread Hagar Delest

Hi,

There has been recently some topics in the forum about the error message Fatal Error
"index out of bounds" with a crash. Occurs when a file is opened.
Sometimes resetting the profile works (temporarily) and sometimes not at all.
See: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=84353 (and a
query to other similar topics).

Before submitting a bug report, does anyone have an idea of what the index out
of bounds means and if there are some actions to try to narrow the problem?
It seems rather related to Mac and more generally to *nix systems.

Thanks,
Hagar
