I work in the medical software space. The biggest problem is not how
to display the information (UI, etc.; socially or cloud etc.) but how
to convert all the static data out there into one format.
I don't think governments can mandate it. I don't think it's going
to ever happen because there are
I have a family friend who does patent applications and drawings for a
group of lawyers. There are very specific guidelines you must follow
and I found most of them here:

I recommend you search uspto.gov thoroughly and even consult with a
It's not Wave but the protocol it uses, XMPP, that Google is trying

Google controls yet another platform for communication.
I have only seen the demo video for Wave but even with that small
view I get the impression it's just a

I have to say I get a lot of inspiration from motorcycle design.
Ducati is a big example, however it's the relationship between user
and machine that seems so refined and perfectly researched that
intrigues me.
The motorcycle and rider are useless without each other - it's a
symbiotic
Not much out there, it's true, probalby because Interaction Design as
a discipline is relatively new. However, all is not lost - two ideas:
1. This site has a good explanation and a basis for a vision:

2. Go to

Why reinvent the wheel when there are so many tools out there that do
this? Atlassian's Jira and Replicon work well together to manage
developer workflow.
Besides that, I like your design. It's clean, with good contrast and
actually uses color. Replicon doesn't use color all that well, with

The one gripe I have with Replicon that I hope your system addresses
is being able to carry work from previous weeks forward to the
current week.
Right now I have to start from scratch every week and it's a big
pain. I charge .5 hour just to fill in my timesheet because of this.
. . . . . . . .
I say whatever you do, do it consistently and the user will get it.
Even interfaces and navigational elements that break the mold do so
with a purpose; no matter how much grunge or web 2.0 is applied
to the situation.

My opinion is that Interaction Design doesn't influence or manipulate
behavior it facilitates it; simplifies it.

I'm a graphic designer turned web designer turned IxDer and I can say
the pencil paper thing definitely is core to graphic design.
Basically, Get away from the computer if you really want to be
creative.
As Bill Buxton says in Sketching User Experiences: Designers
can sketch, non designers
I'll just quote Bill Buxton here from Sketching User Experiences:
Those who saw multiple designs gave us more critical comments. A
few even rejected one of the designs (something extremely rare in
studies that only evaluate one design, and therefore very
significant). But constructive
Over here Marketing Team and the software look and feel are entirely
separate. Marketing strictly handles how the overall product is
presented to customers and potential customers.
The connecting force really is the brand standards. We actually have
a hired team whose sole focus is to redesign
I love this post! It's very pertinent to what the design team I'm on

developers.

As an American in New Zealand and former member of AIGA I have my own
perspective on this.
There are a lot of parallels between the two orgs, but I think IxD
tries to separate itself from graphic design/look and feel
per se. Our aim is the interaction, not the exact look of that
interaction.
We discussed this very issue in my department recently.
We decided that it's a balance between security and usability. What
typical user wants to have a password 10chars long with a capital
and a special character? A short list:
1. Someone going to their banking site
2. Someone accessing tax

*Development style. * More and more engineering-driven places are
using Agile and Agile-esque approaches such as Scrum for development.
This can make it challenging to meet big-picture needs such as UX

Ah yes, strategy. :)
At my company there are no Project Managers (insane, right?!) so we
IxDers are tasked with inital Project Management (ie. strategy).
Ignoring that whole can of worms, I think IxD can serve as the
initial strategists for a project and probably shoud, by definition.

I'd follow Alan Cooper's advice on this one: Make the interface give
the user data instantly, like the view screen fighter pilots use.
Make a toolbar that gives the user these messages. The user rolls
over a tool and the message toolbar lets him/her know what the button
is for.
