Hi everyone,
I wanted to give a quick update on where we're going with this.
I hope to finish my wireframe tonight, which I will post to the group for
feedback. Next we'll move on to usability testing. Lastly, I'd like to turn
out the client side code. Once coded, I'll send it (along with our
Text messages may be a wonderful donation method for those in the US,
but it leaves donors outside the US out of the loop.
I tried to make a donation to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief
fund via the web site on Thursday morning. The form repeatedly threw
an error saying my card was declined.
Hi Kafi,
Same impression I got, but thought should pass on IXDA's comments.
Best of luck,

I used to work at headquarters at the Red Cross and it's usually all

local and willing to help out with any efforts if ARC's folks do have
time to work on the form.
After recently talking with my wife about making a donation to the Red Cross
(to support the Haiti recovery effort), I went and had a look at their
donation form. All in all it's pretty weak. Which is unfortunate given how
important their organization is. I don't think it's so bad that people

I'd be happy to help as well, perhaps with a little quick and dirty
usability testing. Shoot me an email - we haven't spoken in a while!

Which particular form are you referring to? They seem to have several
online forms at different countries. Is it one of these?

I think it's a great idea. However, aren't they moving away from
forms to make donations? I just read an article that said people
could send a text message to a specific number and automagically
donate 10 bucks to them.
To me, no interface is better than a form just my 2 cents...

Really cool.

It's a good thought - many charity sites need help in this regard.
Last Christmas, the various branches of my family all suggested
favorite charities to donate to, and I had the opportunity to make
use of three different ones - all were clunky, awkward, and
needlessly discouraging to someone
Hi Hugh, et al., I'm the IxDA Vice President and I'd be glad to help
with any Red Cross communications if an official voice is
considered important for this urgent initiative. You can reach me via
email most easily at ixd(at)elizabethbacon.com and I'll do what I
can.
Bravo for the great
You people do know that the IxD's at the Red Cross (who are on this
list mind you) might not take kindly to be told what to do.
Just saying.

Of course. They could very well tell us to take a long walk off a short
pier. Never hurts to offer though.

My understanding is that
David Meltzer is the
Sr. VP International Services at American Red Cross .
If you decide to offer them your services, perhaps he
can be reached at:

He is also on Linkedin.

It certainly doesn't hurt to offer. And it doesn't hurt to consider
where they're at or where they're coming from either.
Many times a kludgy interface is due to it being dictated by the
back end where an apparently easy tweak can wreak havoc on other
layers (talking to the DB, e-commerce, etc.)
Are there any standard to have labels about the input necessarily. Shouldn't
placement of labels and input fields depend on length, type and other
parameters of a form?
If you are talking of Haiti...
Hi guys,
I passed on your comments earlier to contacts at the Red Cross, who
advised that they're really grateful of the advice/help. But right
now they're v busy with the crisis [as am sure you can imagine].
Their lated tweet:

Count me in for pro-bono usability engineering/testing if this effort gets
off the ground. And if a committee is formed to plan or execute the
initiative, I'd be happy to help out in that capacity as well :^).
