Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction Designers: What is your elevator pitch?
Strictly speaking, I think of myself as an Information Designer, which means I allow myself the luxury of being a little more vague and abstract: My job is to convert data into knowledge Of course you can see that it's probably more effective at stopping awkward elevator conversations than starting business ones. And it's unlikely it would ever get me a date; fortunately when I met my partner I was doing a different job... [IxDA Discuss] Calendars integration online
Hello Folks, have a question for you... I am actually developing an on line working platform, and a few of the potential users I surveyed has asked for an on line calendar that could interact and integrate local calendars such as that from Outlook, Thunderbird and so on. I'm pretty sure something that works like this already exists, but we seem like we cannot find any similar application around the web... Anyone has any suggestion?? Re: [IxDA Discuss] stop trying
@ Chris and Pietro, I think your posts exactly got my point, and my reflections. I totally agree that users must be at the core of design, but when you need to adapt something to it, it's not always easy. I often puzzle myself about the existance of universal design. In the classic example of a fork as something designed for all, I say, well, what about those little villages in somewhere asia, where everyone is used to eat with sticks, rather than a fork. Or to flip it over, would you have ever imagined eating with the combination of movement of two sticks before the great expansion of asian food. This could go much farer, involving cultural effects and bla bla. So Pietro, I totally agree with you whe you say universal design is design for all but not for every interaction/activity/context. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction Designers: What is your elevator pitch?
I used to get a lot of blank stares when I would give my job title. For years many of my friends and family weren't quite sure. Then this past summer I went to the zoo with my fam. They had arrows that were supposed to give you the best complete path through the zoo but instead we got lost. I took that opportunity to explain. I told them I make sure things like that don't happen to users. It worked! Now I try to use everyday examples since interaction design is more than computers. I think I am done hearing so you are good at computers. *sigh* On Thu, 18 Dec 2008 04:38:59, Andy Polaine a...@polaine.com wrote: I don't get invited to parties. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ya i agree with Jared. Telephonic conversation will be the best option to go ahead with this research. Before few weeks four of my friends on a community site stopped visiting the site and i was surprised why they did so, as they were earlier addicted to this. The only reason they told me that more of business ads and networking on the social community site. It also depends on user to user as some user like advanced features on the community site for better networking environment. Surely this subject needs a research.. Re: [IxDA Discuss] determining reasons for user dropout
There are lots of good reasons users stop coming, so context matters: - Were they ever regular users, or were they just checking you out (Second Life, which has a huge fall off after registration)? - Have they forgotten their password and would log on if you reset it for them? - Do they just need a gentle reminder/invite and coupon or tour of what's new on your site? Or do they have a reason for not wanting to log on--for example, despite weekly e-mails from my brokerage firm, I simply do not want to face how much money my retirement account has lost since my last log on. The other reason of course is they don't need what's offered by your company. Reminders and incentives are unlikely to affect those people, so good to separate them out if possible, and perhaps follow up with them separately. If you were charging a monthly fee, they would cancel their accounts rather than drop out. I'd recommend testing responses to various approaches rather than sending a survey, which is unlikely to engage anyone except the small demographic of people who like to fill out surveys (most of whom are members of this list :) A friendly we haven't heard from you in a while e-mail accompanied by an incentive can revitalize lost visitors/customers, at least the ones who saw value in your service in the first place. Finally if you do follow up (and you should), please offer an easy unsubscribe. There's nothing I hate more than being spammed by some site I logged onto once three years ago that wants me to remember a user name and password in order to stop getting mail from them. [IxDA Discuss] Agile User Experience: What are the common denominators?
Hello! First - apologies to subscribers of SIGIA and IxD for cross-posting... My name is Dave Robertson, and although you can't see him, this is my partner, John (JJ) Johnston. We've been asked to deliver a presentation for friends of ThoughtWorks Canada in January (to which all of you are welcome to come, but more later). JJ is an agile guy who's interested in user experience and I'm the user experience guy who's interested in Agile. We've decided to make an argument that Agile and UX share a number of common values and that these values should form a foundation for better integration (rather than simply trying to mash together our respective techniques or chucking rocks at opposing sides). Since we were approached in October, there's been a lot of fresh discussion about agilux here and on other lists. Nielsen/Norman Group delivered their opinion on the topic and Cennydd Bowles made his call for a common future for the Agile and UX communities. But, as always, we still see emails on mailing lists asking questions like How do we mash these things together?, Should we mash these things together? and, most importantly - How do we make this work better!?. It struck us that you might have an opinion about common values, so as part of our presentation, we'd like to hear and summarize this community's feelings about our theory, good or bad. To (hopefully) start the discussion, here are three questions: 1. What role do you play in your projects? Is it as an analyst, a project manager, a developer, a designer, a researcher or something else? 2. What things - goals, objectives, values, attitudes, philosophies - are most important to you when you do your job? 3. If you've been engaged in projects that have been heavily influenced by agile and /or user experience, how has it influenced what you value in your work? Sincerest thanks! [IxDA Discuss] Articles etc on interface structures
Hi guys I'm writing some workshop material on high-level structures for interfaces - explaining different high-level patterns that an interface may use (e.g. linear, two/three panels, canvas plus tools, dashboards etc) I always like to provide additional reading, but can't find any good references for this material, except for the Tidwell book. Most pattern libraries focus on much more granular combinations of components, not the high-level structure. Any ideas for articles or references? Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction Designers: What is your elevator pitch?
I have a number of elevator pitches. I don't prefer one over the other - I kind of flip through them like a rolodex. These, however, are some of my most successful ones: I help clients make their products/sites more user-friendly When it comes to web or application design, I advocate on the user's behalf, rather than the client's Once I mention that I'm an interaction designer, I usually have all ears at the table because most people have never heard of that before. So, post-elevator pitch, I elaborate with something along the lines of: I help clients figure out what kinds of information needs to be on the site, how it should be organized, and how people will navigate through it in order to have the best experience possible. I interview real people (or target users) and find out what they want and need from a site like the one I'm supposed to build, and then I translate those needs into design/business goals for the client Then I finish off with something like: I find it very rewarding because I get to help improve people's experiences with websites/products/life And then we all invariably start to talk about websites that we hate. -Jen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Apologies for possible cross-posting. The development team we are working with is recommending Google Web Tools to architect a site to be released within the next 6 months or so. The site includes a LOT of visitor tools and forms as well as content and advertising. Any thoughts/experiences you can share in terms of Google Web Tools will be much appreciated. If you are aware of any sites that use this technology successfully, we'd love to see them. One pressing concern is search engine optimization when using Google Web Tools. Overall, I think the interface and interactions of this concept present interesting design functions combining social features and Flash techniques. It is however not all that unique and higher capacity, more dynamic interfaces, such as Ben fry%u2019s Organic Interfaces at the media lab years ago pose more interesting questions about interaction and form. However, Will, I feel that to suggest that UX peeps working in the marketing/advertising agencies%u201D are less trained or should approach there projects without adhering to UX principles and heuristics is flat wrong. I have been waiting for a thread to discuss the problems or marketing, selling and advertising in relation to UX in general. I have worked in application and product design, but have found the unique challenges such as the balance, visual design, engagement, storytelling and branding in relation to usefulness and necessity to be more interesting and ultimately more rewarding. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Calendars integration online
Hi Maria, You should look into the vCal and iCal formats. They are universal calendar invitation formats that work with most any calendar application. Essentially, your application would generate a vCal/iCal file and prompt the user to save/open the file on their computer. When they do, it would open with their calendar app (Outlook, etc.), which would take adding it to their calendar from there. The file formats for vCal and iCal is pretty easy to generate using a server-side scripting language like PHP or Perl. As far as I know the formats are pretty interchangeable too; any app that works with one is likely to work with the other (such is the case w/ Outlook). Hi Timothy, Sorry for the confusing messaging. It's definitely an issue as to how we have communicated the flow of the conference, and as chair I'll take the fall there. We have to charge extra for the workshops because well the workshop leaders have to make their way for all their hard work. It's a pretty common model for conferences. But we have not done a good job communicating this. There are 3 free workshops this year. 2 from Adobe and 1 local leaders summit. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction '09: Pay for workshops?
Tim, Workshops at conferences are typically an additional fee. Having both taught workshops and attended them, I can tell you they take a lot of work from the presenters, which is one reason they're not free with the conference. Every conference I've been to that offered pre-conference workshops charged extra for them. It's pretty standard practice. Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interaction '09: Pay for workshops?
So the disconnect is that the Crowdvine part of our site does not state that the workshops have an associated cost to them. I'll change that today. Sorry for the confusion there. The registration page has clearly stated that the there is a fee for the workshops from the start and most people have understood that. I will give a status as to the workshops in a separate thread. :) Greg . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] determining reasons for user dropout
If your site is configured for it, look at their activity before they dropped off. You can also compare their actions to other active users. You should be able to determine quite a bit about why a user might have stopped visiting your site from their action history. To understand the why, you need to already know the what, when, and where. This means configuring your application to track clicks, and other actions that will help determine a whole plethora of why's. I also agree with Jared and Diana. You should use this method especially if you have no action history configured in your application. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Dashboard for non-trending data?
Adem, Stephen Few defines a dashboard as: a visual display of the most important information needed to achieve one or more objectives; consolidated and arranged on a single screen so the information can be monitored at a glance. (Information Dashboard Design, O'Reilly: 2006.) The key idea here is objectives. If you can identify what your users would like to do with dashboard data, then you'll know how to design it. Is there snapshot or overview that users will find helpful? Key performance indicators that need to be monitored? What I find sexy in an application is when it behaves the way I expect it to and surprises me by anticipating my needs. Hmm. Actually, I find that attractive in people, too. :-) On Dec 16, 2008, at 10:09 AM, Adem Hamidovic wrote: I've been tasked with designing an interface for an application that reports on SQL and Sharepoint data. However, dashboards tend to lend themselves to trend-type data, or reports that generate simple numerical results such as 'number of databases: 24'. The main focus of our reports is on permissions, and so doesn't quite lend itself to these types of results. I'm wondering if any of you can suggest relevant home page content for these types of reports? I thought about listing some of the most recently used reports, but I'm trying to present this information in an engaging and even 'sexy' way :) -- Kim + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + www.kbgd.com twitter: @feadog + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Welcome to the Interaction Design Association (IxDA)! Google (search), Facebook, and the iPhone (smartphones) are overwhelmingly dominating their spaces right now, making you wonder if anything will ever eclipse them. Re: [IxDA Discuss] determining reasons for user dropout
I agree that the best information will come from an interview of some users. To help you identify trends and potentially specific groups of people to interview you should consider creating a timeline of specific events a user might encounter. For example registration, first post, number of friends, number of replies etc. Trend this timeline along with drop off data. You should be able to see around what events a user is more or less engaged. For example, are they more or less likley to drop off depending on the number of friends or length of time from registration to a specific amount of contributions etc. There will be a lot you will learn from your users with this information and you could also use to to determine different groups of people to talk to. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: [IxDA Discuss] Dominating the space
Mike, Although Google well and truly dominates the search space, Facebook and iPhone are not in the same class. Facebook's dominance is market and demographic-specific, being out-performed in some age brackets by MySpace and Bebo (pre-teens teens); and countries, by a wide range of competing social networks. The iPhone is definitely dominating the media, but Nokia is still the largest seller of mobile devices globally; and Blackberry is a very strong competitor in the smartphone market specifically. There are also cultural and geographic differences: iPhone has had a fairly luke-warm reception in Japan (if memory serves) for example. It's also worth pointing out that Google does not just dominate the search engine market. It is also, as a direct result, dominating the online advertising space, where five years ago the dominant market player would have been someone like DoubleClick. Which is not to argue the point, but reinforces your underlying point that market leaders change. Since we're talking about online/digital type markets, you might as well throw in Netscape capitulating to Internet Explorer, and the current rise of Firefox as another example of the changing landscape. In each of these cases the forces at work are very different. Google's success was tied to a very different approach to the problem of finding things on the Web. Where others were developing more and more complex models of directory-style indices and keyword search, Google came out with an offering that was stunning in its simplicity. And delivered results on a scale not matched by any of the competing services. Where Yahoo and MSN, altavista et al were curating collections in the tens of millions; Google's early offering delivered results drawn from a collection numbering in the billions of pages. It was faster; less complicated; easier to understand; and more likely to return a meaningful result. It was also easy for advertisers to understand and buy into. Competition for Google as a search engine could come from an unlikely source. It is possible that a social network like Twitter could erode Google's dominance as our primary source of 'finding things on the Web'. I already receive a large amount of my resources via Twitter; with a substantial collection being delivered via RSS feeds. More importantly: I trust those sources much more than I do results in a search engine. So as these services grow and extend their reach, the value of those networks as a source of information will also grow, with the value of each successive connection being much greater than simply +1. Facebook's success - and I'm not arguing it's success (let's not turn this into a discussion of whether or not it's making a profit, revenue, or is likely to survive) - as a social network came from several factors: it was targeted at college students (initially) rather than attempting to compete head-to-head with MySpace in the teenage market; it provided a platform for other businesses to develop applications to enhance the overall value of the service (arguable, but still a factor); and opened itself up to non-college participants in time for their early adapters to be graduating and moving out into the world. MySpace, on the other hand, hasn't really 'aged' with it's members, thereby providing the opportunity for Facebook to capitalise on that end of the market. The 'next Facebook' may already exist; or it might be just around the corner. Or it might be that Facebook evolves and strengthens it's market position. The first hurdle it needs to clear is to introduce a strong revenue model that allows it to survive and enhance itself. Time will tell whether or not they can do that successfully. The iPhone, for me at least, represents an interim step between the mobile phone as a purely communications device, and the truly personal connect me to the world and keep me entertained device that we'll see in 5-10 years time. The iPhone's days are numbered, although it represents a great leap forward towards that future device. It has some unique characteristics that make it appealing: the touch interface, with the gestural elements that make it much richer experientially than other offerings; the integration with iTunes, and the iPod capabilities of music, movies, TV photos; and, perhaps most significantly, the introduction of the App Store - and all of the third-party applications - that open up a wealth of opportunities for both iPhone users and third-party developers to use the iPhone as a platform more so than a stand-alone device. The iPhone has helped to redefine what we expect from a 'mobile phone', but it's importance for me is the direction that it gives to other device manufacturers as to how they'll need to compete in the future. It may be that the iPhone killer won't come from Nokia, Motorola, HTC or Siemens, but from Apple themselves. And that's just fine by me. Regards Steve 2008/12/19 Mike Scarpiello mscarpie...@gmail.com Google (search),
