Rscholl

Nope.
On the Itunes tab I've got the Itunes Music Library.xml location
pointing to the My Music folder on my wifes PC which has been remapped
to my NAS by using TweakUI. see above.
On the Basic settings tab I have both Music Folder and Playlists
Folder pointing to the folder containing all my media on my NAS.

Once setup reboot the Squeezecenter so it reloads these values and it
shoudl work. Did for me anyway.
Hope that helps

My question: How do I get the generated playlist into SlimServer?

If you save them as m3u files you can just put them in a directory
somewhere on your system and then point squeezecenter at that location
via the Settings page - it's on the Basic Settings tab as Playlists
Folder.

You do have to ensure that the address of the music files in the
playlists will make sense from the point of view of squeezecenter and
then once you rescan they should all be there and available.

Re: [slim] Will my setup reflect the quality of a transporter?

2008-08-02 Thread Nonreality

 - First, you can already make the test: compare the SB versus the
rx-v2700 internal DAC. Notice that you may have to put some attenuation
(via the squeezecenter menu) otherwise you might find a lot of
distortion and conclude that SB is junk (I've marked 6, which stands
 for -6dB).
 - You could also try it with an external DAC that you borrow
 somewhere.
 - Transporter is a very fine machine and works well with hi-end
 systems.
I am not sure it would do something better for your actual setup.
(I have both, SB3 in the kitchen, and TP on the main system).
Listen and make your opinion, as always.Actually you can do that in the
Yamaha's menu which works better. It's
not much and there is no distortion to begin with or I probably would
have told him. He can compare and all it takes is investing in a
connect. As far as borrowing a dac, I've found it's not like borrowing
sugar from a neighbor as most people not only don't have one, they don't
have any idea what one is. Maybe in a big city but then again... knock
knock... may I borrow your DAC for a test. :) Lets be realistic here,
most people seem to notice an improvement with mostly pretty expensive
equipment. Sometimes even then it's not a huge gap. Same with DAC's,
you see pro's and cons even in the upper end equipment. Spend 2 grand
on the transporter or 2 grand on speakers and I'll say every time let's
go listen to some new speakers. Sell the ones he has and maybe 3 grand
in speakers is going to be a much better investment that the
transporter will be. Now if he already had the speakers then it might
be a different story. Then again maybe a different amp. These are
great receivers but not up with quality that it takes to spend 2 grand
to gain something that the receiver can't take advantage of. Spending
more on a DAC than any of his other equipment, I believe, would be
ridiculous which is basically what he would be doing. The same applies
to me.

I have the RX-V1800 and I can report that the SB3 is completely
destroyed by the Transporter SQ-wise using the analog inputs (which I
suspect is converted to digital internally in the Yamaha for
sub-filtration, volume etc)

The rest of my setup is more high-end, the RX-V1800 is the worst

[slim] What output level on the SB3 is best?

2008-08-02 Thread Aguida

I guess as most people I don't use the SB3 volume control but the one on
my stereo amp.

So the question is what is the best setting for the output volume of
the SB3 with regard to distortion and S/N ratio? I usually have it on
95% but I got the doubt wheter I am too close to potential clipping
distortion of the output.

One important detail is that i use the analog output.

And one follow up question is: Is it possible to lock the volume si
that no one accidentally changes it again?

Thanks a lot.

[slim] SC 7.0-7.1 upgrade - strange problems

2008-08-02 Thread itm

I've just upgraded from SC 7.0.1 to 7.1.0 on a Windows XP SP system,
with about 70,000 tracks. Since upgrading I've done a clear and
rescan of my library twice, but still have these problems:
- Web interface: no album artwork displayed on the album list or
artist/album lists, but album artwork is displayed on the album track
listing page. If I select an album and see the track listing then the
artwork for that album will thereafter appear in the album listing
page.
- Duet controller - Wrong albums listed for artists - e.g if I select
Eric Clapton I see a list of Alison Moyet albums
- Duet controller: no artwork displayed anywhere except the Now Playing
screen
- Duet controller: a software update seems to be available, but always
fails. It says Copying Update, then a few seconds later There was a
problem upgrading this remote. Please try again, or contact support.

Do these problems sound familiar to anyone?

Setting the volume at 100 will give you the best signal-to-noise ratio,
so that's the general recommendation. Just don't turn your amp's volume
too loud! With Sqeezceenter 7.1 and the new firmware it includes, you
can use the fixed output level option in Squeezecenter to lock both
digital and analog output at volume 100. I think you don't actually
lose detail until volume 70, but 70 on the SB3 is about -15 dB, so at
70 you've decreased the S/N by 15 dB. Use the Advanced Search feature
on these forums to find posts by user seanadams (company founder
Squeezebox designer) for the best info on the subject.

If you're not using Squeezecenter 7.1 or if you want to lock the output
at a lower volume level, see my VolumeLock plugin. Basically, once you
get the volume where you want it, you can use the IR remote or Web
interface to ask VolumeLock to lock the output.

If your amp has an infrared remote control, you should also look at
Felix Mueller's IR Blaster plugin. I use this on one SB3 that's hooked
up to a mini stereo. IR Blaster fixes the Squeezebox output at a
certain level and passes volume up / volume down commands to your amp
once you acquire set up an IR blaster infrared dongle.

What more choice do you want ?

All Reciva offers is a directory of radio stations. The same stations
are playable on SB - just there is no centralised directory run by
Slimdevices - RadioTime is the nearest.

SC has more variety in some areas such as Live Music Archive.

AlienBBC is mainly for BBC, BBC Listen Again and RealAudio stations.
However AlienBBC is also used for WikiRadio where user's have uploaded
their favorites stations etc.

I had a non-connecting Controller, it wouldn't connect to my Linksys

firmware, I installed Tomato on a second unused WRT54GS and swapped it
in place of the Sveasoft unit. The Controller connection problems went
away, unfortunately Tomato is unstable and has bugs (port forwarding
isn't working) so it's not a solution. I'd be happy to work with Slim
Devices to get to the bottom of the problem, but I'm not going to wait
forever. My Controller has had to go back for RMA due to a
non-functioning rewind button, but if anyone from Slim Devices wants to
ask me questions which will determine what the problem is with the
Sveasoft/Controller combination maybe it will fix the problem for
others too.

Maybe it's possible for you to use the old SqueezeScrobbler plugin and

Basically it looks like Onkyo amps are picky about the level being used

Is there any way to change the output level on the SB3 headphone port

Shoutcast, won't play anything but gives the error message; No items
 found in playlist URL.

Make sure DNS on the FreeNAS box is configured correctly.

I am able to browse RSS feeds and LastFM so internet connectivity is
 OK.

That's interesting. What does the server.log file say?

1.2.1 on WRT54GS v2. I tried everything to get it to port forward TCP

it open up the ports in the GUI but no data was ever forwarded). I've
disconnected the Tomato box and replaced it with the Sveasoft box,
ports are being forwarded correctly and my internet connectivity is now
stable once again.

I don't know if it's a problem with the Controller, Slim Discovery or
Sveasoft or all three - I'd like to help Slim Devices get to the bottom
of it if they're interested.

Nothing. Support desk unmanned over weekend leaves me with a silent

get the blinking for a longer period of time and then the connection
to my computer is lost (then I can play songs on the SB by using
 Squeezecenter in my Browser).
If it doesn't lose connection inmediately it takes ages to select
songs. Getting a list with artists takes like 2 minutes (3800 songs on
 a network disk).
Even SqueezeCenter in the browser is slow. I play songs via OTSJUke via
the same Network and everything works instantly (also with Windows Media

Switching of AVAST Virus scanner and my Firewall doesn't help
 anything.
All my other equipment (6PC's, 3 Network drives, 2 Network Printers, 5
Network Cameras work great on the network. I switched of the
cameras during working with the Duet to ensure maximun Network
 Bandwith.
Everything including the SB is wired. The Controller is connected via
the Squeezebox. I have tried it via my wireless router however this
 didn't give any improvements either.

Same experience for me when I brought a trial Duet unit home for
testing. All of the dropped connections, input response delays, and
inconsistent reliability made its use too frustrating and therefore
back it went. Defintiely not ready for prime time for me - still way
too buggy.

The rest of my setup is more high-end, the RX-V1800 is the worst
component in my setup, but still its clearly the best receiver in it's
price-range that I have heard. You don't want the receiver to move it back to
 digital. Then you are
using the Yamaha's dac and not really using the transporter. If you are
using pure mode then it would pass through the 1800. Also the straight
stereo mode can but it depends on what else you run in the receiver.
As far as destroyed? I'll have to think about that, broad term. Are
you sure your inputs are the same level. I've seen too many times level
inputs being set different fooling people. I agree that it could make
a difference but not unless your speakers are very good and again I
would have to wonder if it would be a $2000 difference. I do agree that
the 1800 is the best AVreceiver under $1500 maybe $2000. The HDMI 1.3
make it very nice for connectivity. I have my dvd, cable box and
Playstation 3 all switched in that way and love it.

When connecting the SB to SN it plays shoutcast just fine. The SB

Problem must be unrelated to DNS. Any ideas ?

[slim] Controller software update

2008-08-02 Thread Brum

Sorry for posting these questions, but I'm a novice in this area...
I have a Duet, with Squeezecenter running on a Qnap TS-209 Pro.

1. When upgrading SC to 7.1 a few days ago from
http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html (Perl code; version reads
7.1-22170 after updating), I was under the impression that the
Controller should also be updated to get some new functionality?

2. I have tried to update the Controller via the Settings - Advanced
menu. The Controller indicates new software version ? is available.
When trying to update, the display reads copying update for a few
seconds, then I get an error message, and am told to try again or
contact support. FW still reads 7.0.1 r2448; is this the latest
official release of software for the Controller?

3. I have found indications on this forum, that the main release
number should be the same for Controller and SC. I have also found some
software updates (jive_7.x_r.bin) which I believe are for the
Controller on http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/
In case an update should be done; which one is the correct for me? The
latest one under 7.1?

4. I guess that the Controller searches for updates in a directory in
the SC installation, and updates when new files are posted there. Can I
download the correct *.bin file, put it in the correct directory, and
try the manual update again, or do I have to use the SD-card method
described in other posts on the forum?

I hope someone is able to help with these questions...

[slim] Ran out of decoder PRAM at internet radio

2008-08-02 Thread TimFranke

Hi,

I just bought a Squeezebox Classic and I like it a lot.
Unfortunately playing the favorite radio station (OGG stream) of my
wife
the display shows after a minute or so
Ran out of decoder PRAM and the music stops. The I have to reboot.
I'm using firmware 101 and SqueezeCenter 7.1
I have read in some older threads that I should:
If it is an OGG stream then the workaround is to disable under Server
Settings/Filetypes OGG (built-in)
But I can't find that menue item, where to do that.

Can someone point me to right direction?

Regards,Tim

[slim] Squeezebox classic Logitech Harmony

2008-08-02 Thread Arie

Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to program more functions on my
Logitech Harmony 885, beside the standard ones? It would be great to,
for instance, program a new button on the remote to start browsing new
albums, or any other function, for that matter.

[slim] What's wrong witht the user interface?

2008-08-02 Thread Taylormade

Since upgrading to 7.1, the user interface has become jumbled. If I
clicked on settings, the settings screen would come up with everything
bunched up.

I thought I could uninstall the software and do a fresh install and now
the explorer windows that open where you type email and password etc are
screwed up as well. Scroll bars on the side are missing. I'm so happy
I tried the upgrade.

Where can I download the previous version?

Re: [slim] Announcement: SqueezeCenter 7.1.0 Now Available

2008-08-02 Thread Chippy

I've been having problems streaming any internet radio on my original
Squeezebox since upgrading to v7.1 (installed over 7.0.1 which had no
problems). My Squeezebox 3 works fine.

Example radio stations (avoiding Alien issues):

1050 ESPN New York
Capital Radio (London)

Trying to stream on the original Squeezebox fails to start at all...
the screen displays Connecting... but gets no further. Sometimes this
makes the SqueezeCenter software crashes on my Mac.

Any ideas welcome...

cheers

My mistake - original Squeezebox streaming fine now after installing the

Interesting that the SB3 can play ESPN and Capital without AlienBBC,

Anyway. All good.

SB3 can player WMA streams whereas SB1 cannot.

AlienBBC has the necessary conf settings to enable WMA transcoding
using mplayer on non-Windows systems.

It looks like I found my own solution. I edited the registry and

It really shouldn't require this level of knowledge for an upgrade to

Re: [slim] Will my setup reflect the quality of a transporter?

2008-08-02 Thread marsboer

Of course I don't want the receiver to move it back to digital, but
since the volume control is everything but an analog unit I'm pretty
sure all modern receivers do a ADA process to do volume, even in pure
mode. I'm using straight mode by the way, as pure mode doesn't allow
sub-filtering.

The differences I hear may as well be that the frequence response of
either input device is a bit different, something that would get
reflected through the ADA process too, as well as that the DACs in the
Yamaha is good enough to show some difference even though I probably
can't see all of it. But with the Transporter it is easy to test as it
has a built in rudimentary volume control, so I have compared the
Transporter with and without the Yamaha in the signalpath. The
difference is incredibly small, almost non-detectable, much, much
smaller than the difference between the Transporter and SB3. This is of
course because my room and my other equipment probably is a much bigger
problem than the tiny manipulation done by the Yamaha in my current
setup.

I did test the differences in my previous setup also, which was a
dedicated stereo setup, with a dual-mono balanced analog signal path
all the way through. My current opinion my be influenced by this test,
which of course were done on somewhat more resolving equipment.

This were my setup back then, so you can make up your own opinion about
if the equipment were good enough for your tastes

[slim] Evaluating Both Sonos Squeezebox Before Buying - Your Thoughts

2008-08-02 Thread GlenL

Just been on another forum (not Sonos) and a claim was made that
Squeezebox owners/supporters are reluctant/dismissive of potential
buyers trying both Sonos and Squeezebox systems before deciding on
which one to purchase.

When questioned on this, it came to pass that nobody had ever seen a
post where a Squeezebox owner/supporter had actually stated there was
no reason to try both systems.
However it was stated that when a Sonos owner/supporter suggests people
try both systems, Squeezebox owners/supporters don't actually fall over
themselves replying to the post in agreement.

As a result, can I ask the following questions ?

Q: As a Squeezebox owner/supporter do you support the idea of potential
buyers trying both Sonos and Squeezebox systems before deciding on which
one suits their needs best ?

If you are against such a suggestion, could you state your reasons why
?

Thanks

What forum is this then? I dont think you would find any around here
that would be against you trying both, it's a good idea to try anything
if you can first. Trying both Sono's as well a an SB product would be
very sensible.

The Squeezebox is a better all around product, that does more yet costs
less, It's a no-brainer for -most- people. That said, there are people i
know who i would recommended the Sono's too over the Squeezebox. Try
both if you can.

All Reciva offers is a directory of radio stations.
While the 10,000+ radio stations are the most obvious part of the

(about 20,000 of them according to its web site).

Re: [slim] Evaluating Both Sonos Squeezebox Before Buying - Your Thoughts

2008-08-02 Thread kdf
A classic false claim. The comparisons come up often even on these
forums, and I've never noticed any shyness to suggest an open comparison
by trying both. In the specific case you point out, the claim is made
that owners/staff/developers...

well, staff make it perfectly clear that support IS there to try it out
for your self just by having the 30-day policy at all.

owners, well, I've never seen anyone come out AGAINST it, but to somehow
suggest that by not jumping in and wildly supporting the act of
comparing is somehow tantamount to not supporting the idea is ludicrous.

developers, are pretty much too busy working and testing to be spending
time on these forums, let alone other ones. They are more active in
forum land than I've seen for most cases, but it is much the same lame
thing to make a claim based on a lack of action. Speaking for myself,
if something is obvious, I feel no need to jump in and say yes, do
that just to make sure no one can claim I'm against it.

Basically, take any claim on a forum with a grain of salt and always
consider the source.

Both products have different features and suit different needs in
different ways. If you are able, try them both out and see which fits
you the best. In fact, given that you HAVE that option, looking for
advice from others is far less useful

Of course, yes. Anything else doesn't make sense to me, but I'm sure
its possible, for any product like this, to dig up some reference to
someone whose opinion is a little bit more biased than facts can
support. But a hard fact is that Slimdevices offer a 30 day money back
guarantee. AFAIK this is in the US, I'm not sure how it works
internationally. How easy it is to get a loaner might vary. When I
bought my TP (in Denmark) I made a phone-call to a dealer I found on
Google. He immediately offered to send me a TP on loan and the only
expense I had was to pay for return postage. Btw its his policy so he'd
done it with an SB3 or Duet also.

Indeed, and this also holds in the real world. It seems that many who
has hands on experience of one product and only superficial knowledge
of the other falls into the trap of promoting the former by discussing
the weaknesses of the latter. I've experience this from a local Sonos
dealer (their way of promoting is not exclusive for Sonos, they have a
lots of other products. The dealer is very popular but I never liked
them, still once or twice a year I pop by to see if there has been any
improvement)

[slim] Podcast crashing my sc

2008-08-02 Thread brdbointx

I have the latest nightly of 7.1 running on my infrant NAS.

On Squeezenetwork I have a set of podcasts that I listen to often. The
first on the list is called Synthetic and the rss feed is:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/Rsaudio

Now - when I go to Other_podcasts on SN I see SYNTHETIC and then I have
a list with all the latest podcasts. Cool!

Now - on Squeezecenter I went to the PODCASTS tab of the settings menu
and added my squeezenetwork opml list.

When I go to OTHER_PODSCATS on SqueezeCenter I see the same list from
SN. Then I click SYNTHETIC and SqueezeCenter goes nuts:

- On the Duet controller I immediatly gfet a darkened screen and it
says it is trying to connect to Squeezecenter (even though it was just
on it)
- On the SB3 it disconnects and goes back to the list where I choose a
server.

It is totally odd.

I have tried removing the feed and then adding it again - same
problem.

I tried putting the stream in directly to the SC PODCASTS tab and that
just crashes SC when APPLY is hit.

Anyone else have this issue?

[slim] Here is an interesting problem.

2008-08-02 Thread Nonreality

I have an all time best collection of classic rock. It's 500 songs
broken down into 5 folders. All are named the same with CD1, CD2 etc
on the ends of the name. The songs are tagged with artist as the
actual artist, then album artist and band are named Various Artists. I
had to add the itunescompilation tag to get SC to put them in the
Various Artists under artist browsing. Now for some unknown reason the
first song in every folder is listed as a separate album. Before I
added the itunescompilation tag the were alright under album viewing
but they didn't show at all in the artist browser. Only ID3v2.3 tags
and all have the same tag setup. Any ideas out there. I have gone
through the tags with mp3tag to make sure they are right.

[slim] xPL Not Sending IR Codes?

2008-08-02 Thread AndyMc

Hi All,

SqueezeCenter appears to have a bug that stops it sending IR (keys
or raw) via xPL.

I have just installed SqueezeCenter 7.1 after running the old 6.x
series. I have enabled the xPL plugin and also set the IR codes to
both. This was working before I moved from 6.x.

Currently (on 7.1), I am seeing xPL broadcasts showing track info and
heartbeats. I am also able to send xPL commands that are obeyed by
SqueezeCentre. The problem is solely the error below when SqueezeCentre
attempts to broadcast the IR key presses.

The server.log is showing the error:
Slim::Plugin::xPL::Plugin::xplExecuteCallback (575) Warning: Called
without a client:

Looking in the code, the xPL Plugin has been called without a client
set by the notify() code when a IR remote key is pressed.

Does anybody know how to fix this? I have had a brief look, but being
new to the codebase I am on a steep learning curve!

Thanks in advance,
Andy.

[slim] adding laptop

2008-08-02 Thread Tombolino

Hi

Have had slim on Imac for a while.

Have new Mac laptop, used downstairs. I want to use it in a different
the normal way I have my Imac setup with my slim.

Basically, for the laptop, I want to use my slim only as a wifi router.
Itunes allows music sharing between 2 computers. So I want to experiment
with making the selection of music from the laptop, and have it be
wireless to the stereo, thru my slim device (it is the wireless one).
So I would DJ out of the laptop not the slim display.

is this confusing?

I dont know how to set up the laptop to connect to the slim to connect
to the stereo.

Re: [slim] Evaluating Both Sonos Squeezebox Before Buying - Your Thoughts

2008-08-02 Thread Nonreality

Don't worry about what forums say about comparing and just do it if you
feel the need. Logitech is very cool about comparing and it will just
cost you freight. I don't know the Sonos but it was out of my league
price wise at the time so after reading a lot about the SB I just dove
in. I now think the sonos is probably very good for people that want
the simplest way to do this without worries about sound and expansion.
Kind of like Itunes and the ilk. Keep it simple and not a worry about
customizing and adding cool features. I like the open source not
because I can add to the talent but I can use the cool addons that
talented people create. It's all in what you really want to have I
believe.

Re: [slim] Does SB play nice with Apple Airport Express?

2008-08-02 Thread Eric Seaberg

How are you planning on using it to connect between your server and SB3?
Are you saying you'd have your server be wireless AND the SB3 be
wireless? Not a good move, IMHO. Too much traffic to stream anything
other than MP3s.

You'd be better of getting a router that is WIRED to you server Mac and
only run wireless to the SB3. Then you could stream lossless.

The jive.bin is 9.2mb so i could not uppload to this tread, i could
