Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection
Just a quick question as I have been lurking and on the fence about buying a Duet for the kitchen and a couple receivers for the kids' rooms. I've had a couple SB3s for some time and like the product and familiar with its abilities. Here's my question. Seeing as the issues appear to be related to the controller, are you able to assign it a static IP? If so has anyone noted an improvement? In my case, all wireless devices on the LAN are statically assigned and filtered by MAC anyway. The kids would just control their receivers with laptops, but my wife would require the use of the controller. If I have to spend a lot of time fixing her controller issues, she would be frustrated and just not use it. mb -- mbodner mbodner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16884 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Think of Signal Strength as Loudness... that isn't the sole measure of audio: there is also Signal Quality, which is hellish since no one computes it the same way. Ie, you may have a strength of 44, but your neighbor has supercharged his router and whenever he clicks a link on his web browser the channel you are using is congested and your router keeps getting interrupted on packets and his strength is just enough to drown out the reception. You may want to use NetStumbler or some such to find nearby networks.. and try to move as far away as you can. (Channels actually overlap, so if your neighbor is using channel 6, which is often the default on routers, moving to 4 will be less signal from him, but it will still see some.) -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46318 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter slow?
I used the SqueezeCenter webapp, but I'd like to use iTunes if possible. I know iTunes clients can see daap and Firefly. I'm on the exactly same boat. I love squeezecenter, I have installed it on my media center, it works perfectly with my Roku Soundbridge (I had connection problems using Firefly). I can play music on my MCE/Stereo using the webui (and softsqueeze also running on my MCE). BUT sometimes I just want to listen to music on my laptop and I miss some kind of rich client where I can easily search and play songs. I find it a hassle to startup a local softsqueeze/iTunes stream everytime, select it and send songs to it. One thing I really loved about Firefly is that is able to serve an iTunes shared library which I could browse easily. Also I could live with just using the squeezecenter webui if it had the possibilty to play songs directly from the webui (like .mp3 attachements in gmail). -- antonw antonw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16886 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45048 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags
I'm not losing my mind over this but I'm telling you it's not a problem with my tags but with the way the Squeeze server deals with it. Oh no, not another one... I bet you it is your tags, and you haven't read the numerous posts in this thread about the differences of album artist and band. I think the presence of an album artist tag should override the compilation setup they now have. It does. Oh and I'm really not sure how you can tell someone it's automatically their fault when you haven't seen their tags. Because its obvious that they are using band, not album artist. Also many other programs allow you to have multiple artists as in an artist and album artist. Some understand delimiters in artist tags, such as Robert Fripp;Brian Eno, so that they read that as being two artists. I believe Media Monkey does that. They don't generally allow multiple artist tags to be set. Although many tagging applications report album artist, this is usually storing in the band tag. A quick google suggests that this is the case with Media Monkey, so suprise suprise you haven't got album artist tags at all, and SqueezeCenter reads your songs as having a band. You can confirm this by browsing to a song, and seeing if it reports an album artist or a band contributor in the song information panel. Mediamonkey automatically move and keep all my music by album artist. Db poweramp rips to my collection by album artist Actually they are ripping into the band tag... A quick google for dbPowerAmp album artist band found a hit: I can confirm that dBpoweramp uses the BAND tag for album artist information when ripping to mp3 (and uses ALBUM ARTIST for Ogg as stated previously). It just makes sense to organize this way, it keeps your albums in the right folder and shows the current performer on playback. Yes, it makes perfect sense to organise music to have album artist tags, and SqueezeCenter is working exactly as it was intended. There's just confusion over album artist for mp3 tracks due to a lack of a standard tag for storing it in id3v2.3 tags. Quite a lot of applications use Band, and report it as album artist, which just makes things very confusing for novices that want to use their music across different applications. I'm not losing my mind over this, but it would be nice to have it all laid out so a person can try to adapt if possible. I think as a minimum, the content of this thread should be summised and fed back into some official documentation. There should also be a new option to allow SqueezeCenter to interpret ID3 TPE2 (Band) as Album Artist, for compatibility with other non-standard apps. This has been said many times now... [slim] Unusual uses for your Controller
At the risk of sounding like a dodgy bugger.. Here's a rather unusual use I found for my Controller. I have three kids.. and to ease the number of chores (and to improve general household sanity), my wife and I agreed to get a cleaner once a week for three hours to .. well .. clean. Recently I've noticed that the house has been less clean.. (probably because I'm on paternity leave with too much time on my hands).. So I called to make sure the cleaner was .. well .. cleaning and found that the cleaner wasn't really at our house for the full three hours.. closer to one hour the time I rang.. I mentioned to the cleaner that I think it might be appropriate to .. well.. clean for the three hours instead of one. who cares I hear you say.. well.. now comes the interesting bit. Being a little peeved, I attached my Controller to the inside of the front door, knowing that the handy inbuilt accelerometer will notice any door movements during the day. When I get home I check the log to discover that the cleaner has only .. well.. cleaned .. for about an hour and a half. Hello everyone, Reporting back on my status. I performed about 3 updates on my remote (currently running 2223) since writing here last. I have also ditched running Squeezecenter on my Mac Pro and now run it on a dedicated WinXP box. Everything has been working wonderfully for the last 3 days or so. I'm not sure if this was Mac related or remote related (I have strong suspicions is was the remote firmware). But I am happy to report that everything is working as I originally had hoped it would - no need to RMA this product. As I have said before, I think the Slim team needs to focus on what happens when the PC or Mac running SqueezeCenter gets turned off. When this would happen, the remote would get confused and would not allow me to change to SqueezeNetwork to listed to Internet radio (since my MP3 library was no longer accessible). Re: [slim] SQueezecenter won't open on port 9000
Hang on, what exactly is the problem here? I thought the issue was that the ReadyNAS already had something listening on 9000 which was preventing SC coming up? If so, the PC you're connecting from has nothing to do with it (likewise sysinternals as they only do Windows stuff last time I checked!). If you can get a shell on the NAS you should be able to use netstat -a to see what's using what. If the problem is on the PC side, then 9000 has nothing to do with it. if you mean the dianostic on the blank ie page is 192.168.1.107 is not setup to establish a conection to port 9000 with this computer. Is that IP the address of the PC or the NAS? Re: [slim] best stand-alone seakers to connect a SB3 to?
In my kitchen I run a SB3 with a set of Genelec - http://www.genelec.com/products/2-way-monitors/8030a/. These are actually meant as studio monitors, but I think they sound very nice (maybe because I have been using JBL passive speakers for many years now) especially compared to price and size. In the more expensive end I would suggest listening to Dynaudios active speakers; I currently run a couple of their passive speakers (the SE25) off my SB2 with digital preamp and class-A poweramp, but my wife would not let me spend the money on a set of active Dynaudios for the kitchen, hence the Genelec solution. Btw - the Dynaudio link is here for their active speakers: http://www.dynaudioacoustics.com/ and IMHO is the BM 6A Mk II the best, with the 5 as the closest competitor (the original 6A should have been better than the 5 but disapointed some people, including me). -- getprogs getprogs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=753 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46115 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection
Perhaps usage has something to do with it, although from day one my setup has been: 1) Static IP for both the Duet Receiver and Duet Remote (x.x.x.120 and x.x.x.121 respectively). 2) Mac ID filtering for my network, with both MAC IDs put on the allowed list. 3) Using D-Link Router with Belkin Wireless Extender, so not a simple wireless setup. 4) Computer on 24/7, but periodic re-boots I found with SC 7.0 and the last remote firmware allowed with SC 7.0, the common issues found: 1) Spinning Arrow 2) Red icon after a long playing session 3) Blue icon after leaving the remote in the cradle overnight 4) Random power-ons of the receiver 5) No caching of album covers, so looks like covers are being downloaded each time with a delay 6) Random loss of connectivity to SC, where all the menu options disappear 7) Disconnect between remote and receiver (remote shows not playing, receiver is playing) After upgrading to 7.01 and remote firmware v2223, all the above problems are gone. And I haven't touched any of the usage mentioned above (i.e. no network changes, etc.) Graeme -- gboz13 gboz13's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16057 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45031 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

They are very good and reasonably priced for the sound quality you get at each price point. http://www.abluesky.com/asp/default.asp If you do buy a vented speaker may I suggest that unwashed, very holey, woolen socks worned only by Norwegian bachelor farmers from Minnesota work best. Best listening, George George, I would be cautious in blocking the ports of of an active speaker. The ventilation might also be used for the amp. I heard the F80 at a show and was very surprised that something that size could manage a sound of the scale that it did. My favourite Meridian actives are the M2. About £300-£400 second hand over here in the UK. I've got a pair of Audioengine 2 on order for the office. Setup with these speakers is pretty important and the lighter they are, the more affected they are by support. I'll probably start by putting cones underneath them to stop resonance with the shelf and then work from there. What about the BW Zeppelin? Also the Harman Go+Play. Most of these docks can be used for this purpose. If anyone from Audioengine is reading, Please accept my thanks for your UK pricing policy. UK and US pricing seems very close where with some other products from other companies, 60-100% markups are not uncommon. -- HectorHughMunro HectorHughMunro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46115 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Album Artist vs. Band (TPE2) tags
bullgod;291720 Wrote: Because your solution is already in place (viz. all tracks in the the album in question have Compilation = 0) and this does not have the desired effect. If this isn't your solution, or I have misunderstood it in some way then I apologise unreservedly. It doesn't have an effect because it is only half of the solution. The other half, which you might missed, is that you have to have tag ALBUMARTIST explicitly set. You think you do, but you don't. What you do have is tag BAND that you see in iTunes or Winamp as 'Album Artist'. We have already established that SC scanner doesn't convert more universally accepted BAND to ALBUMARTIST internaly. We also established that it would make sense and it would be nice to make it do it, since 99.9 % of the world rightfuly expects to see their iTunes/Winamp 'Album Artist' behave the same in SC. :) Now, as said earlier, I'm not holding my breath waiting for SD to do something about it (contrary to the fact you believe I'm an optimist), so I'm working on my solution (just like you). I also don't use iTunes and I always review tags in newly ripped tracks. So, my solution is to use mp3tag and add ALBUMARTIST where I think it makes sense. That approach actually has some benefits, since it frees tag BAND to be used for other purposes, like Band or Orchestra, and that helps very much for complex tagging. If you think you problem is complex - think for example Opera Gala. There is an orchestra, conductor, composers, let's say four singers who might sing solo, duets, tercets, or quartet on some tracks. Not all tracks have composers, one might not care for all composers or performers (don't want to see them in artist listings, but still want to be able to search for them and to be able to drill down on their names) ... you get the idea. Took me a year to figure out how to go about stuff like that, and there are still ways to go. My grudge with SD is that most of those things are not documented, or even worse, the existing docs are poor and missleading. For example, I only learned about ALBUMARTIST internal tag and its importance in prior discussion with Snarly. Now, I'm even afraid they will change things to meet BAND with ALBUMARTIST and break what I already have (pesimist, you see):) regards, K -- slimkid The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will improve. [slim] Sychronization with SqueezeCenter 7.0?
Sychronization worked very well for me with the previous version of SlimServer. I recently upgraded to SqueezeCenter 7.0. Seemed to work OK until today when wanted to listen to music throughout the house while working in several rooms. Setup is: softsqueeze (also, updated) on my computer/server and 2 SqeezeBox-3's in different rooms. The only change was the upgarde of the slimserver and the softsqeeze software. Hardware is unchanged. I have rebooted every device - computer, squeezecenter, wireless router, and both squeezeboxes. And although, I tell it to sychronize, the music is no longer synched. Any guesses as to correct this short of restoring the old software? That is the correct solution - tag things properly. It doesn't take long to open your whole music collection in mp3tag, and make it copy the content of TPE2 (BAND) into TXXX ALBUMARTIST. Rescan SqueezeCenter. Problem solved. No frigs, no hacking around in the source code. It won't break other rubbish applications that misuse BAND as ALBUMARTIST, so you can continue to use iTunes and WinAmp, but as a bonus SqueezeCenter will work as you expect, and FooBar will too. Will Logitech bring out a fix in one of it's beta releases?? It's not a Logitech or SC problem - it's a QuickTime/Nvidia/Vista problem. If you try to play some file with Quicktime you may experience delays or stutters. If I install another beta SC release do I need to again replace the convert.conf file? Create a file called custom-convert.conf same format as comvert.conf but just with the new faad lines. Put the custom-convert.conf file in the same directory as convert.conf. Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 + Apple Time Capsule + Wireless = no love?
I think I spoke too soon. The stuttering is back. Not as bad as before but it is still there. Hmmm. This isn't goinn to be easy. I will have to try the MP3 file again to ssee if that stutters now. -- milesbeverley milesbeverley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16662 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44165 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

well it seems the songs are playing again without skipping. Maybe it was a glitch. I need to do some more testing over the next days. -- milesbeverley milesbeverley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16662 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44165 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 + Apple Time Capsule + Wireless = no love?
Stuttering is a common symptom with a variety of causes. You may have had two issues. Does the stuttering affect all AAC files or just a few ?. When it occurs in a specific file - does it occur in the same place ? You could do a bulk convert AAC to MP3 using a command line something like in a bat file faad -w inputfile.aac | lame - outputfile.mp3 However there will be a loss in quality - it would be better to solve the underlying problem - otherwise it may reappear in another context. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44165 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How do you use your Squeezbox/Receiver/Transporter
Brian Ritchie;289644 Wrote: ... Tonight, even though the heating is on and the washing-machine is spinning, both units are showing a much better signal (66-70). I'll probably try sync again in a little while. I was still finding sync to be unreliable. So last night I moved the kitchen SBR to beside the living-room SB3, and confirmed (NOT via Controller - see separate thread) that the signal strength was about the same for both, though the SBR tended to give a slightly lower figure. Then I put the SB3 into the kitchen, and tried sync. It's worked perfectly ever since, even surviving the washing machine (though I've yet to try the microwave). This isn't ideal - I'd prefer to have the SB3 in the living-room (we do miss the display) - and I don't really understand the asymmetry (could the SBR really be less tolerant than the SB3?) I'll swap them over again at some point and see if the problem resurfaces. -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45679 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
